Islamic Cairo Walking Tour: Khan El Khalili, Al-azhar Mosque

I had a fantastic experience on this walking tour and would highly recommend it. The guide, Hosny, was very knowledgeable and gave so much interesting context to the history, architecture and culture of Islamic Cairo. What I particularly appreciated was how accommodating and thoughtful he was throughout the tour. He went beyond the planned itinerary, suggesting some great extra stops along the way, including a lovely café and an affordable souvenir shop where I could actually browse without feeling pressured to spend a lot. It made the tour feel much more personal and relaxed rather than like we were simply ticking off the main sights. I came away feeling like I’d seen and understood a side of Cairo that I wouldn’t have been able to experience nearly as well on my own. A really enjoyable and memorable way to explore the city!

Hazem is courteous, helpful and very knowledgeable about the history and architecture of the mosques, madrasas and mausoleums of Islamic Cairo. He is also knowledgeable about the stores and cafes of the marketplace. I recommend him highly.

Great experience! Came out of this tour learning a lot about the more recent history of Cairo. Our guide, Hazem, was very helpful if navigating Khan el Khalili and gave us some great recommendations for hookah bars and souvenir shops.

Be prepared to walk on uneven stone surfaces and slippery at times. If you already have an idea of what you are looking for it might be easier to shop. Your guide can help you to find bargains.

Great tour of old Cairo with Yasmina. Fun and full of knowledge.

Hazeem was the best tour guide ! He’s knowledgeable and easy to get along with, but our favorite part is that he wants you to really have an authentic experience. We had an amazing time visit the mosque. Hazeem helped me with covering my head properly to observe the custom. He took us to the famous Elfishawy coffee shop in Khan El Khalili , treated us to tea and sweets, had a band play for us. It was an incredible experience. Unfortunately we had to shorten it due to me being sick, but Hazeem made sure we had an amazing time regardless. I highly recommend this tour as well as our friend Hazeem!!

We had an amazing experience touring Khan El Khalili and taking a day trip to Alexandria with Tarek as our guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and he brought both destinations to life with fascinating history and local insight. At Khan El Khalili, he guided us through areas we never would have found on our own and made the experience feel relaxed and authentic, never rushed. The Alexandria day trip was perfectly organized, with a smooth drive, great pacing despite some unforeseen set backs and thoughtful attention to our comfort throughout the day. We would highly recommend Tarek to anyone visiting Egypt.

Zizou was a fantastic guide for us through Khan El Kelili market and Islamic Cairo. We booked this private tour a day in advance just after arriving in Cairo. We jumped on another tour the day before and afterwards realised that there might be a lot of overlap with this tour. Zizou was very accommodating and flexible and helped us dig in deeper into Khan El Kelili market which was the perfect outcome for us. He helped us find great places to buy particularly items we wanted (rugs, lamps etc), enabled us to find some beautiful areas of the market we had seen in our research and combined it all with great knowledge of the development of Islamic history within the area. Zizou is a very smart, intelligent guide, with deep knowledge of Egyptian history including a Masters degree in Egyptology. We enjoyed his company and loved getting to know him more while enjoying the best falafel (ta’ameya) we’d ever eaten at the end of the tour. We would highly recommend him for any kind of tour in the area.

My morning with Hazeem in Old Cairo was very educational and fun. I'm a solo traveler, so we got to share lots of conversations on topics of my choice. He is highly highly educated on history and Islamic culture. The gentleman who served as our driver was also wonderful and navigated the chaos of Cairo in a modern passenger van with ease. I'd book with them again any time.

Visited ElMoez street with many shop and Mosque and building Unesco heritage. The visited mosque are: ElHakim the oldest, AlAkmar the smallest, AlAzhar the more beautiful and biggest.

Hosni was our tour guide. We had an amazing look into the daily life of an Egyptian. We visited the Al-Azhar Mosque and it was an enlightening experience. We were escorted through the entire market place. He took us to the shops with the best prices, as well as an authentic Egyptian cafe.

Really really great tour. Hosni is a friendly and engaging guide and an expert on Cairo history, and enjoys sharing it with others. Covers a lot of the sights and sets the groundwork so that you can carry on exploring on your own. We took a lot of pictures and had a fun and interesting afternoon.

Νιce walking tour through the old town crossing narrow streets surrounded by mosques, shops, old buildings and bazaars. First stop was a big mosque and then we had the walking tour followed by a stop to a cafe for drink a coffee or an Egyptian mint tea. We ended the tour by visiting a cotton shop.

We took this tour to visit Islamic Cairo and Bazaars with Zizou. He was punctual to pick us up from the hotel. The trip will be memorable because Zizou’s vast knowledge on Islamic history of Egypt as well as his respect and his interest on other religions and their values. We took time to explain small details and also included Al-Azhar mosque as part of the tour on our request. He helped us navigate through the bazaar and negotiate during shopping. He speaks perfect English and has a Masters in Ancient Egyptian Language, and he makes the history of Egypt so interesting and accessible. He accommodated our interests and needs and tailored the experience to go to the kind of shops we wanted to visit, and even helped us to bargain with shop owners. Excellent experience as a US woman travelling alone. Zizou was my guide for the Islamic Walking tour. He is a fountain of knowledge on Egyptian history from ancient to modern, literature, music, religion, society and just about any question I could come up with. Zizou adjusted the tour en route according to my interests, providing experiences that would not have been possible on my own or with a group tour. In just 4 hours, we covered historical sites, shopping, traditional music, craftmaking and tea in a tiny cafe. Zizou was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable of Egyptian history and culture. We saw the Al-Azhar Mosque where Zizou shared his knowledge of Egyptian history. Afterwards, we visited the Kan el Khalili bazar, where we had a chance to purchase souvenirs and see jewelry and perfumes. If you want to spend half a day on a tour I would recommend this one. And if you can get Zizou as your tour guide you’ll be in good hands.

An incredible day with Mr Zizou in Old Cairo. Zizou is extremely knowledgeable and gave us a detailed and interesting tour. We visited two mosques and walked around old Cairo.
