Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church is traditionally believed to have been built on the spot where the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus Christ, rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. They may have lived here while Joseph worked at the fortress. The church is of significant historical importance, and in fact, it is where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected
The Hanging Church is named for its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo); its nave is suspended over a passage. The church is approached by twenty-nine steps; early travelers to Cairo dubbed it "the Staircase Church". The land surface has risen by some six meters since the Roman period, so the Roman tower is mostly buried below ground, reducing the visual impact of the church's elevated position
The synagogues have included a geniza, or repository for abandoned or outdated documents containing the name of God, since Jewish teaching is that such papers had to be stored with reverence, and then eventually buried in a cemetery. The 11th-century building incorporated an unusually large geniza, "two stories high, more silo than attic – with a rooftop opening accessible from above

Bassant and Kiru were amazing guides. They picked us up directly from our hotel and took us to see some of the most important sites in Egypt (Coptic and Islamic). Bassant is incredibly knowledgeable. She weaves in stories with history to really captivate your attention. She even was so kind to get us cold and waters and juices in the heat. I would highly recommend both for your tour of Egypt. We made it a short day due to jet lag but Bassant invited us to see additional places like the civilization museum and shops as well as pyramids. I loved that she gave us not only history on the incredible buildings we were seeing but also information about living in Egypt and the culture.
We had wonderful day at GEM which is amazing and unforgettable. Also our guide Gina from Twitter Egypt Travel was very professional and helpful.
So glad our guide Hager was with us. She put all the history into context with what we were seeing. Highly recommend having a guide as you would otherwise not understand what you were seeing.
Everything about the tour was great. Starting with timely pickup from our hotel and the visit to the sights. We were comfortable and felt safe and loved the commentary.
Our tour to the Coptic Quarter and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, led by Mario Nagy, was a wonderful experience and a great deal for the money. He was knowledgable, approachable and friendly. We were driven by Kyro, who, when I asked him to stop by a pharmacy for cough drops, did so and even paid for them. He wouldn't let me pay him back. About a half hour after we arrived back at our hotel, we got a call from Kyro stating that he had overpaid them by $50 and brought it back to us! We were very touched at his honesty. We used Twitter Egypt Travel for our VIP Meet and Greet and this tour. Highly recommend them, Mario and Kyro!
Spent the day with Mario visiting Coptic Cairo and new Grand Egyptian Museum. A fun and engaging guide with a deep knowledge of Egyptian history.
Day trip with Mario exploring Coptic Cairo and Grand Egyptian Museum. Our guide had an intimate knowledge of Egyptian history and was able to enrich the experience. A very fund day with a wonderful guide.
Our guide, Dina, made everything possible for us and responded quickly to our requests so that we could fully enjoy ourvisit to the old churches and the Museum. Her professional manner, knowledge, and flexibility made our trip extremely comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and time in Cairo. Many thanks.
Mario is a great Egyptologist! He took us to old Cairo and taught us all about the Orthodox churches there. He was great with both our kids, ages 2 and 8. Very responsible, kind knowledgeable, and fun. He picked a great local place for lunch too!
Our Tour Guide Dina is exceptional with her knowledge of Ancient Egypt. She has a kind nature and is passionate about her country’s ancient civilization. The tour was both educational and inspiring. Our Tour Leader Kyrillos, led the way through the streets of Cairo like a champ! A very patient man with a great sense of humor. Very kind and knowledgeable. We were very impressed and would recommend you contact Isaac at Viator to book your tour or tours with Dina and Kyrillos.
We had an extra day in Cairo before the start of our cruise, so we decided to do a half day tour to Coptic Cairo. Mario was our guide and he did an excellent job. Both him and our driver were prompt and polite. Mario’s enthusiasm for the history of Egypt was evident during the tour. We had a little time at the end of the tour and we asked to also stop at the Old Cairo Papyrus Museum, which was a ton of fun. We wouldn’t hesitate to book with you again, or to have Mario as our guide!
The trip was well organized, safe and fun! Mario was a truly great guide and fantastic photographer, so my boyfriend and I have many wonderful photos of us.
Excellent service from Isaac. He was on time and very friendly. He helped us to navigate passport control and customs. After that, he drove us all the way to Giza to our AirBnB. He established communication with the host to know the exact location and arranged a private car for the 8 of us. I totally recommend this service and will make use of it when we come back to Cairo. P.S. Isaac also offers tours at very competitive prices. He also helped us to arrange them.
This was my favorite part of the trip. The tour guide showed us this old coptic cairo in a very good way.
Enjoyed my tour immensely. Mario, my guide, was very good. He communicated with me prior to the tour and was on time for the start. He was very personable and made sure my personal desires were fulfilled. My experiences with Twitter Egypt Travel have been very positive.
Michael was outstanding, genuinely when he talks it was so easy to follow and keep engaged. That is what differentiates between a good and a great guide and experience. The driver was amazing and the lunch was so good that we started googling recipes as soon as it was finished to try replicate when home.
WOW.. simply.. WOW None of this was even on our itinerary and I can't believe the sights and information we were able to see. This ended up being in our top 3 favorite parts of our trip to Egypt. You'll see amazing sights such as where baby Jesus and Mary hid for 3 months in Cairo and some other incredible sights. Amazing service and very informational but fun. Definitely recommend.
Excellent day trip with Michael, we visited the Coptic sites and Islamic site and Michael explained in great detail both the historical aspects and today's status.
Twitter Egypt Travel and our guide Michael gave us an excellent round tour all around both Islamic and Coptic Cairo. The architecture, admirable handworked details and the historical backgrounds to it all, shared by our widely knowledgeable guide was very rewarding. The Coptic churches where simply mind-blowing. So big thanks to Mr Isaac for setting it all up, with his always just as kind and friendly character!
Nour Nagy was our english tour guide and Mohamed Musola, our driver, were fantastic and honestly genuine. They cared for our safety and explained what we saw on our quick day tour to Coptic Cairo and Khan El Khalil via a private car in the streets of Cairo. They answered any questions for us and made sure we were happy. We enjoyed seeing the culture of the people and understanding the life of the people in Cairo. Thank you Isaak for setting up this tour with wonderful people.
Loved the experience Trip was very well organized Tour guide was explanation was very interesting. An outstanding service
Not a lot to see but still very interesting that after all these times, it retained its original structure
Was very interesting day, I couldn’t ask for more ! Our guide was very friendly ,knowledgeable and knew his way around ,we were glad to have him, not only he knew the history of that area but also had great recommendations for Egyptian food restaurants and gift shops that saved us money!,
Again another perfect tour with Twitter Egypt. Everything was well taken care of by our amazing tourguide Ayam. She is the best. When you are in Egypt I recommend Twitter Egypt for anything you need in Egypt! They can arrange airport dropoff, pickup and make life at the aiport soo much more simple! They can and will make it happen for you easily. They even helped us out with arranging a PCR test which we needed to fly back to Amsterdam. About the tour, the views were STUNNING! The M. Ali mosque is GRAND and the history behind it in Egypt time is relatively small and short but it is still VERY impressive!
Seeing such magnificent monuments with a great guide and (to be honest) nearly a private visit was a totally unique experience!
Hany was our guide for this day. He picked us up and we were off to the Citadel and the Mosque of Mohammad Ali the Great. We had the place to ourselves, Hany, went through the history, the architecture and then became our cameraman. This part alone would be worth it, but we were off to see other parts of the city. We saw the Hanging Church, a must see, once there you will know why. The cave church and we tried to get into a Synagogue but it was closed. To make up for it Hany provide us with a real treat in the form of authentic communion bread. The tour continued to a great lunch and a few side stops to an Oil shop, a jewelry store, and a papyrus factory.
Twitter Egypt was accommodating in arranging our last day in Cairo. We visited the churches of Coptic Cairo and the Alabaster Mosque/Citadel, followed by a very enjoyable lunch. We then spent the afternoon in the Egyptian Museum. Once again, our expert guide greatly enhanced our understanding of the culture and history of the Egypt. The pick up and drop off were exactly as promised, a hallmark of Twitter Egypt.
