The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (English: Library of Alexandria; Egyptian Arabic: مكتبة الإسكندرية Maktabat El-Iskandarīyah, Egyptian Arabic: [mækˈtæb(e)t eskendeˈɾejjæ]) is a major library and cultural center located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. Note: Alexandria Library is Closed on Friday so you will be able to take Photos from outside
Sultan Abu Al-Nasr Sayf ad-Din Al-Ashraf Qaitbay (Arabic: السلطان أبو النصر سيف الدين الأشرف قايتباي) (c. 1416/1418 – 7 August 1496) was the eighteenth Burji Mamluk Sultan of Egypt from 872-901 A.H. (1468-1496 C.E.). (Other transliterations of his name include Qaytbay and Kait Bey.) He was Circassian by birth, and was purchased by the ninth sultan Barsbay (1422 to 1438 C.E.) before being freed by the eleventh Sultan Jaqmaq (1438 to 1453 C.E.). During his reign, he stabilized the Mamluk state and economy, consolidated the northern boundaries of the Sultanate with the Ottoman Empire, engaged in trade with other contemporaneous polities, and emerged as a great patron of art and architecture. In fact, although Qaitbay fought sixteen military campaigns, he is best remembered for the spectacular building projects that he sponsored, leaving his mark as an architectural patron on Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Alexandria, and every quarter of Cairo. To some historians
The Roman Amphitheatre is one of Alexandria's most popular monuments. This is Egypt's second most important city, after the capital, Cairo. While the amphitheaters were spread throught different countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey during the reign of the Romans with many examples of these structures still present in many regions around Europe and the Middle East, the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria is the only one of its type in Egypt.
The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (meaning "Mound of Shards") is a historical archaeological site located in Alexandria, Egypt, and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.[1]

This was a great way to see Egypts second largest city, Alexandria, from Cairo. We visited the Library, Roman theatre, catacombs, citadel, and had a delicious lunch at a local enchanting restaurant, Giovanna’s. Kudos to our heroic driver, Mohammed, and our fantastic guide Mahmoud, and our caring waiter at restaurant, Gasser Amr.
This is a great way to see highlights of Alexandria, from Cairo, within just one day. We visited the famous Library, catacombs, citadel, Roman theatre, and had a delicious lunch at local enchanting restaurant.
The drivers English wasn't that well but very courteous and friendly. He waited for us during the pick and was understanding because the hotel was so large to find him it had several entrances. The tour guide was very good in showing us around I would recommend.
Great experience to visit Alexandria, the driver Gamar show professionalism and patience to show the more important places.
Great driver and guide. Knowledgeable and thoughtful.
Amazing experience and Amir was a wonderful tour guide!
A very informative tour! Lots of history and breaking taking views, along the Mediterranean Sea. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, and was also quite accommodating! Recommended a very wonderful seafood restaurant, and the food was delicious!!!
It was just fantastic they are professional and i do recommend them
Our driver Mohammed was fabulous navigating the 200km journey each way (400km and 5 hr journey time) at break neck speed but we felt very safe. Sadly the car wasn’t comfortable with 1 from our group of 4 travelling in the child parcel shelf seats at the rear of the car and when the guide joined us in Alexandria, 2 of the 4 had to fit in the child seats. As for the guide Ola, we all felt that she wanted to be somewhere else- we had a brief 5 minute overview at each site and were then left to explore on our own- we often listened into other tour group guides as we went through the sites. All sites were basic and had not been enhanced to provide a richer experience. I’m sure a more engaged guide could have provided us with a better experience.
It was a great trip, our tour guide Mohamed was exceptionally and took us out for a great Egyptian meal, would highly recommend this tour to anyone. Five star. Beware of the boat guys lol at the citadel
Our tour was supposed to start at 7 am. The driver did not show up until 8:50 am. I phoned the tour operator few times but there was no answer. I asked the hotel concierge for assistance and he was able to reach the tour operator and she informed him that the driver went to the wrong Marriott. However, when I spoke with her she told me that the driver had an accident. The driver drove us in a Nissan Sunny and the seats were very uncomfortable for a 2.5 hrs drive each way. His driving was very aggressive and my wife was very scarred. He continuously drove between 130 to 140 kph. I did ask him to slow down. The guide was very difficult to understand at start, she talked fast. She would walk 20 to 30 feet ahead of us. I did tell her that we both had surgery recently and she needs to slow down. This tour cost us over $210 US and not to mention the stress, and I would not do it for free. We are both very disappointed and Viator needs to evaluate operators more carefully!
A long day with minimal wow factor. The guide had poor English and did the minimal only. Did not engage in conversation much with us. The lunch was average, was not offered water, charged extra for chicken, given a drink, non alcoholic, which we thought was included in the meal then charged extra at the end. I have done many Viator tours previously and this was easily the worst. The driver though was fantastic. Loved his job and loved Egypt.
Our experience was not too great. We traveled from Cairo to Alexandria. Vehicle and driver arrived on time. The tour guide joined us at the first spot. We found the tour guide in a sort of hurry. She provided a 5-7 minute brief at the entrance of each tourist spot and did not accompany with us inside the monument (except Catacomb). Information was basic and nothing beyond the books/internet. Lunch was included in the package but we had to pay extra for making it Non-Veg. No such thing was mentioned at the time of booking. We also paid for all non alcoholic drinks. Trip was for a 10-12 hour duration but we were back in 9.5 hours. And finally, I think the driver mentioned that the ‘Tip’ was less than his expectations - although I thought it was in line with other similar trips. Perhaps, based on my earlier experience with such package deals at locations in Egypt, I was expecting a better deal Personally, I would not recommend this package
Very bad and poor start . Tour was scheduled for 7 am ..till 7:15 no updates from EMO tours about the driver. After chasing them , they today driver is on the way and when asked how much time ..it’s mentioned 45 more mins. Very poor coordination and start of the tour.. I will not recommend Emo tours travel
We had a grand time! We were picked up in a nice and air conditioned car with an extremely friendly and helpful driver. We then took a 2.5 hour drive to Alexandria and our driver was pointing out all the sights to us. When we arrived at our first point, we met our guide, Shari. She was also very nice and gave us some history on each stop. She kept a nice pace too … not rushed, but not lingering either. She also was very nice with the picture taking at each sight. Finally, we had a nice fish lunch in a restaurant overlooking the Citadel before heading back to the hotel. We’d highly recommend this tour!
Imagine booking a private detour to Alexandria from Cairo only for your driver to tell you he has to pick up someone else along the way. The driver wasn’t great at speaking and there was a random woman sat asleep on my two hour journey into Alexandria. You can imagine how annoyed I was in the awkward silence. My itinerary then changed to accommodate the random passenger and started in the library not a stipulated in the tour I was then pushed into doinga guided tour which I had not planned on doing just to delay my stay there so we could take this passenger back with us of course I refused. I carried on about my day and asked the driver to leave early because I was on a short time Window to get back to Cairo the random passenger kept messaging and calling the driver which was equally frustrating and then there were issues with the car on return. Apparently there was oil in the brakes and there was a number of very quick stop and starts which made the whole experience uncomfortable. The driver was trying to be lovely accommodating which he was, but I did find him to be quite aggressive and I wanted the whole experience to be over as quickly as possibleso I could get back definitely wouldn’t recommend. I used a number of guided tours and this by far was the worst I experienced.
It was a long drive 2.5 hrs each way to go to the city thanks driver for the great job n lady guide Reem speaks very good english brought me to important sites and explain rich history behind it was a super nice experience thank you
"My tour of Alexandria with Emo Tours was fantastic. My driver, Essa, was an absolute gem. He made me feel incredibly comfortable from the very first hour, and by the end of the trip, we felt like friends. He provided excellent descriptions of every place we visited and was very accommodating, allowing me to explore each attraction at my own pace. He even went above and beyond by finding a barber shop on our way back so I could get a beard trim. With Emo Tours, there are no scams, no pressure to tip, and no forced shopping stops—you get exactly what you pay for. An awesome day, and a well-deserved 5 stars to Essa!"
Our driver was amazing, so nice and so knowledgeable. He’s the only reason this wasn’t 1/5 stars. Our guide was awful. Seriously awful. In the catacombs, she rushed us through it and skipped all levels except the first one (while every other tour went), then at the Roman amphitheater and citadel she didn’t walk with us. She gave a 30 second overview of each and gave us “free time” no explanation of anything throughout each site. Again, every other guide was with their group. The mosque, we walked up to it and had to take off our shoes (expected) but the locals all carried theirs and she made us give them to a man there to hold them who of course expected us go pay to get them back!! He wasn’t happy with the tip my husband left and was trying to get more while she just ignored the entire situation. We aren’t Muslim and have never been in a mosque so we only know the very basic etiquette, but again she just stood outside. The library was unfortunately closed but the only reason we even walked around it was because our driver got out of the car. The guide just staid inside. We have had other guides throughout our trip that were amazing and taught us so much while also making it a priority to make us feel safe. She left us in several uncomfortable situations, like insisting we use the bathroom at one site bc it was “nicer” for us to then just not be able to leave said bathrooms without tipping (this is with me saying no thank you to the hand dryer bc I figured it would result in a tip). And again she was nowhere do be found. I would not recommend this tour if you actually want to learn something. We learned more from reading the signs at each site.
I had a great time got picked up on time and I was running a bit late but thankfully it was all okay! Got to see all of Alexandria with Mohammed i believe. Im horrible at names! He showed me around with catacombs the old bath houses and of course where the mainline house used to be. Plus the beautiful mosque we made it right before prayer which was a cool site to see! Lunch was great with a great view and slept on the way back bc I was so exhausted after the 4 days in Ciaro. Thank you again for everything!
I had a wonderful day tour to Alexandria from Cairo, and overall it was a very positive experience. The tour guide, a lady, was absolutely amazing. She provided me with so many detailed explanations about the beautiful city, sharing anecdotes, historical background, and valuable local knowledge. She is truly wonderful, extremely knowledgeable, and very caring toward tourists. Thanks to her passion and attention, Alexandria came to life in a very special way. The driver was friendly and polite; however, there are two aspects I did not appreciate. Unfortunately, the driver could not speak English, which made communication difficult at times. In addition, I felt uncomfortable because he was filming me while I was in the car, and I was not informed of the reason for this. Despite these points, the tour itself was excellent and very well organized, and the tour guide made the experience truly memorable. I would still highly recommend this day tour.
This was an excellent tour to Alexandria so professional run, would highly recommend Emo Tours. Our driver, Waleed, was excellent pointing out things along the way, making a huge effort to talk to use using a phone translator. Our female guide, Cherie was also excellent she really knew all the relevant information about the sites. She organised us an upgraded lunch on the waterfront which was excellent. Just a really enjoyable day, although it is a long drive Cairo
It was good but not even close to visiting the pyramids and sphinx etc. our driver was excellent but the guide was ok. The lunch included in the tour the KYC hero which is the national Egyptian didh was ok but perhaps we needed some other choice as well rather than one dish. The highlight was the castle built on the edge of Mediterranean Sea with spectacular views
My wife & I booked this private Alexandria tour expecting a seamless, personalized experience based on the itinerary, but unfortunately it fell short in several key areas. To start, the transportation did not meet expectations for a long 3-hour drive from Cairo. The vehicle seats were covered in dusty plastic wrapping, which ended up dirtying my white shorts. This is definitely not what you’d expect from a “private tour” experience. Things became more frustrating upon arrival in Alexandria. When we met our guide, we were informed, without any prior notice, that another person would be joining our “private” tour. This completely contradicted what was advertised and paid for. Not only did this diminish the private experience, but it also introduced unnecessary delays. The additional guest got lost and was over 15 minutes late to the meeting point at the Citadel of Qaitbay, and then required extra stops which disrupted the flow of the day. The itinerary itself was also impacted. Because the additional person’s tour package did not include lunch and entry fees, our schedule was rearranged to accommodate them. We had to wait upon arrival to some stops for the additional guest to purchase their tickets and Instead of breaking up the day with a meal as expected, lunch was pushed to the very end after all tour stops to accommodate them. After a long day of travel and sightseeing, this made the experience unnecessarily exhausting. While the sites themselves were impressive and worth seeing, the execution of the tour did not align with what was advertised. A private tour should mean just that; private, well-organized, and tailored to the group that booked it. Unfortunately, the lack of communication, added guest, and logistical issues made this a disappointing experience overall.
Amazing tour to an amazing city! Our driver and guide were both great and we saw all the city highlights! Would definitely recommend!
It was a good day tour, unfortunately it was Friday and some attractions were closed like the Alexandria library. Tour guide was ok , it's a long drive from and to Cairo..
This was a beautiful experience. The driver was kind and went the extra mile to show me places. We spent almost the entire day out. Commuting from Cairo to Alexandria. Note: You will need to pay admission fees at most sites. This ranges from £2.5 - £4
Im very disappointed with the service today: 1. You informed us that bottled water is included, however driver insists it’s not. We bought our own as a result. It’s the second time I. Booked with you wherein water is not provided. 2. You did not mention to us that the Library of Alexandria is closed on Fridays, and still proceeded with our booking even though the itinerary says otherwise. 3. We barely spent time on the Mosque. 2 minutes. Because of Ramadan. If everything is short handed today, why even bother booking. 4. We spentONLY 40 minutes each on the citadel, catacomb, andthe ampitheatre despite in the booking it says one hour. Driver insists that it is due to Ramadan, even though our tours beforehand took longer I dont understand why we arepaying full price for a whole day tour if you are givng us a half day experience. 5. We requested to eat. Driver suggested we eat in a fish market. He says only cash is allowed, but it turns out card is also allowed. 6. We were not accomodated during this fish market an we were really hungry, we just asked the driver to take us to Mcdonalds. Suddenly, the driver insisted that we eat the food whil going home because of Ramadan, when he was perfectly okay with waiting for us in the fish market. 7. As a result of eating inside the car, i got very dizzy and got a very wild headache All I am saying is that I respect Ramadan, but please do not advertise a whole day tour if that ks not what we are getting. We only went to 3/5 of the places we visited, and seemingly those three felt very rush. We had more time travelling (4hrs) that going on tour (3hrs).
Different from the published trip agenda. The drive was long from Cairo but worthwhile if you truly have extra time to spare
Was a great experience for my girlfriend and I. Mohammad Nibel (our driver) was great. Stopped on the way both ways for bathroom and food/drink. Felt safe with him as the driving here is Chaotic. Our tour guide (Mohammad Ramadan) was excellent. He explained things well, and when we wanted to ask him something else or to clarify something he did so. Also he was great for taking pictures.
Don't expect to be picked up at your hotel totally ignore any messages I would have second thoughts about touring with this company I have been all over the world this is the worst I have been treated so disappointed
No proactive communication prior to the trip for pick-up arrangements.. We had to find their Whatsapp ID to make connection. The car has a nonfunctional front passenger seat belt. The back seats has to leg room because the both front seats were pushed all the way back. This is for a total of 8 hr ride We didn't bring water because it was supposed to be provided. That's not too bad. The lunch that we paid us$30 for two turned out to be just two bowls of Koshari. Which street priced at us$1 or 2. We were asked to pay additional for anything else.
Felt very much rushed. We didn't get the promised bottle of water so we had to buy. No biggie there. But the luch, which we paid with the booking, US$30, was terrible. All we got were two bowls of koshari (nornally street priced at us$1 or 2). We were asked to pay additional for anything more. The car has a nonfunctional front passenger seat belt. And back seats have no leg room because the both front seats for the driver and guide were pushed all the way back. This is for a ride about 8 hrs long.
Incredible tour to Alexandria! Visited key places such as the citadel Palace, mosques and lunch watching the Mediterranean Sea! Great guide Ahmed and driver Mohammed! Thank you very much for this experience!
Traveling from Cairo to Alexandria for a 1 day trip is just too short to see and take everything in that The great city has to offer!! Even leaving at 7am from Cairo, It takes basically 2.5-3 hrs each way - basically 6 hrs is gone traveling. Only a few hours left to do sightseeing and lunch. I felt very rushed in every place the guide took me to see and experience from Catacombs, Roman Amphitheatre, Fort by the Mediterranean Sea, lunch. I paid for the lunch included tour and was hoping to have a decent fish meal (Alexandria is known for) , instead was taken to a street food restaurant with rice, beans and tomato sauce - total disappointment!!! When asked why this venue, the answer was the budget allowed only this kind of meal. The tour guide Mahmood was very knowledgeable and friendly but I felt he wanted to quickly show something and giving only 10 mins of solo time in each place and then rushed to the next place of interest. The driver didn’t speak any English and I tried to converse with translation - but it was fun and he was very cooperative. In fine, I do NOT recommend this all inclusive tour - if I’d have known before, I would have split transportation, local tour guide and lunch and organize on my own
Our tour guide Reem was absolutely awesome she was informative and very professional. We saw the catacombs and ventured to the library of Alexandria . We also saw other sites along the tour. Reem was super personable as well. I'd highly recommend her in the future if ever taking a trip to Alexandria!!
Viator arranged Tours Emo which is a great company. Omar at Emo kept us updated when the driver would be at hotel to pick up with pictures of the vehicle. It's a good vehicle with 3 rows of seating and 4 of us had plenty of room. It simply made things easier. Walid, the driver handled everything very well and we enjoyed his company. It's a wonderful experience to visit Alexandria and we had wonderful time with good company.
Excellent tour. I loved my day in Alexandria the driver Amah was on time and drove responsible. I felt safe. He even shared some of the best Egyptian music to keep me entertained for the long ride. And Reem the tour lady was amazing, she was knowledgeable, informative and helpful, lovely to be around. I really had a lovely day. Thanks for a fantastic experience.
The guide was too good. So much knowledgeable and waa expalining us everything in detail. He was very generous and welcoming. He got us to very good place for lunch as well.
Reem was a fantastic tour guide who made our time in Alexandria truly special. She was kind, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the city’s history and culture. Exploring Alexandria with her was memorable as well as personal, and we’re so grateful for the experience. Highly recommend her to anyone visiting Egypt. Our driver Sokar was also amazing and very friendly and compassionate.
Very affable guide , comfortable journey and great place . We enjoyed the trip and had a great time..
DO NOT USE EMO TOURS. Would give zero stars if I could. Zero communication and driver never showed up. We had one last day to spend in Egypt and were told the day of that the reservation was confirmed and they’d be picking us up. Viator support and tour operator both never answered. Do not use them.
I had a private tour from Cairo to Alexandria on November 3, 2025. My guide was Salma and Mohamed was our driver. Overall, I am extremely happy with the private tour and would definitely recommend it to somebody who is looking for an exciting private tour in Alexandria. After being picked-up on-time by Mohamed in Cairo at my hotel, we had a very smooth drive to Alexandria where we arrived at 10am at the first location. Salam, my guide, was already waiting for as there. During all the stops, Salma was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The highlight was the Library of Alexandria, where Salma also works as a guide. Her knowledge and capability to connect all the different artefacts of the library into a coherent story made the experience very informative and easy to digest. After the last stop on the tour, Mohamed brought me back to my hotel – despite all the traffic and road conditions – safe and on-time.
A great day trip to an interesting city, only a couple hours drive from Cairo. We had a great guide in Nesrin who was very knowledgeable and engaging.
An expected happy tour became a disaster. An one day tour from Cairo to Alexandria on 11/30/2025. Expected a mini bus with a tour guide. Actually it was completely different. The pick up car didn’t show up until we contacted them through help of hotel staff (almost 2 hours late). The drive doesn’t speak any English. He drove an about 15 year old car. Originally we didn’t want to go. But through the help of hotel staff, telling us that the drive is a good guy and no safety issue. . It felt very uncomfortable to sit at the back seat. About on the road to Alexandria for 45 minutes, I used Google Translation to tell the driver we don’t feel comfortable because the back seat, no air condition and smell gas. He called his contact and I told him this is not the tour we ordered and expected, very unprofessional. We gave the driver 400 Egyptian pound plus 5 us $ for his service after returning to hotel. After return home, I contacted Viator for refund. They reply by email rejecting my request without any explanation. Another unprofessional and unresponsible. I contacted my credit card company and explained to them what happened.p in detail A few days later (12/17/2025) they replied telling me that my dispute is accept .
We had an amazing time. Walid was great he gave us all the information we needed and smoothly drove us all through Alexandria telling us about each location and helping us with whatever we needed. If you are wondering who to book with definitely book will Walid you won’t be disappointed. My fiance and I had the best day! From Giza to Alexandria
This was our last day in Egypt and we made a huge mistake putting in the hands of Emo Tours. We started at our hotel in Cairo finding that our driver spoke zero English on this English tour. We found ourselves not trying to translate via phone so we didn’t distract him from driving in the crazy traffic of Cairo. Less than 20 minutes in, we were waiting at a gas station which took 20 minutes followed by our driver going to the vape shop. We did get him to buy us two waters after telling him that it was supposed to be provided. Took just under 4 hours to get to Alexandria where we met our guide that spoke English but was impersonal and didn’t understand the questions we ask. She took us to an ally restaurant that was horrible and the dish was a few dollars a person. The bowl was Un eatable. We paid $30 extra for that and pretty sure she pocketed the rest. We didn’t have enough time to see the mosque for some reason. After getting another 9 liters of fuel, the worst and most dangerous part of our trip happened. Our driver kept falling asleep on the way back. I finally told him to pull over and drink coffee which he did but no coffee. After assuring me he was fine, we continued. If you value your life, don’t take this tour. It scared the hell out of us on our last day!
Excellent time with Mahmoud! He’s very knowledgable and introduces you to his hometown with passion. I loved every stop and every explanation. After lunch we had tea at a local coffee shop. I felt like a true local.
The tour guide was nice, but the guide and information provided kind of felt brief and rushed, and I had to keep asking for more time at each place (the actual total “tour time” excluding lunch and the car ride was just around 3 hours), as if the tour guide really wanted to go home. Besides, even though I booked a private tour, the car for the transfer was not in a good condition, not even remotely close to “vehicles of the newest models” as they advertised. But at least the driver was punctual and quite friendly. Another minor things is that bottled water was not provided as mentioned. But overall, I think it’s still worth the 6-hour car ride to get see Alexandria.
