Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza then by private car transfer to visit Coptic old Cairo city. First start with Babylon fortress 98 B.C. by Roman Emperor Trajan, then visit the hanging church which dates back to the third century and was built on the 2 tower remain from Babylon fortress. Then we are going to visit the holy crypt church as we believed the holy family stayed their for three month then visit the Jewish community to visit Ben Ezra Synagogue and your guide will explain about Jewish history and their coming to Egypt and prophet Moses.
Then transfer to visit the Monastery of Saint Simon, also known as the Cave Church of Zabbaleen, that dates back to the ten century AD for Saint Simon the tanner. It is located in the Mokattam Mountain, and it is cut in the native rock of the mountain to be the biggest Church in Egypt and the Middle East,. A short drive through the so-called “Garbage City’ – a large population of garbage collectors or Zabbaleen that live there.

We had such an incredible experience touring Old Cairo with our wonderful guide, Marsil, and our driver, Kero! From beginning to end, they made our day feel comfortable, relaxed, and truly special. We explored several of Old Cairo’s beautiful historic churches, including Saint Simon Church and the Cave Church, which was by far my favorite stop. The Cave Church was incredibly beautiful, but more importantly, it was such a meaningful and moving experience for me personally. It is something I will remember long after leaving Egypt. What stood out most about Marsil was how much she genuinely cared about our experience. Our happiness truly felt like her number one priority. She constantly made sure we were comfortable, enjoying ourselves, and getting everything we wanted out of the tour. It never felt rushed or impersonal—it felt like we were spending the day with someone who truly wanted us to fall in love with the history, culture, and beauty of Cairo. Kero was also wonderful! He was friendly, professional, and made traveling between each location easy and comfortable. We felt completely safe and taken care of throughout the entire day. Marsil reached out the day before, and our pick up was easy. Once in the van, she asked if we wanted to learn things about Cairo on the way to the churches and the driver, Ismael, offered us cold waters. She had a lot of information to share, and her English is good. She is very proud of her Egyptian heritage, and it shows. When we arrived at the Holy area, she took pictures for us on her phone and sent them all via WhatsApp after our tour completed. It was nice not having to worry about handing off a phone or asking to stop for pictures. The church tours were amazing! Afterward, we stopped by some stores and had the option to buy spices, papyrus artwork, jewelry, Egyptian cotton items, and perfume oils. Each store had a unique presentation and we enjoyed it very much. There was more she was prepared to show us, but we had early dinner reservations, and we had to cut the tour short. She and Ismael got us back safely to the hotel in time for our reservations. Our time with them was a great memory!
We wanted to see a different side of Cairo beyond the usual attractions, and this tour was perfect. The Cave Church was absolutely incredible and unlike anything we had seen before. The churches of Old Cairo were historic and inspiring. Our guide Ramy explained everything clearly and made the day memorable.
After doing the tour Koptic and Islamic highlights i continued with the guide Mina and driver George from Bishoo Travel to see the excavatrd church. Driving through “ rubbish city” where 90 to 95 % are Christians gave me a good view of the daily life of these citizens and their recycling activities, the church itself and the carvings in the rock were brilliant, together with the stories and history of the church. My guide Mina was passionated which I liked a lot.

My experience was great Jong was so attractive to our needs and wants he was a responsible driver full of energy explaining Cairo geography to us and help us understand it’s culture and people the sense of feeling safe and secure was important to us and he probated that .

This half day tour of Cave Church of St. Simon & Old Cairo Churces was nice. The places we visited were lovely, especially St. Simon (aka Cave Church). Our car ride was very tight. Three guests in the back seat of a small compact car was difficult. The car was air-conditioned, and the driver was fine, but for three guests, squeezing into the back seat was uncomfortable. Also, not being informed in the Viator description of the out of city pick-up fee ($25 us dollars) was surprising. One last item... beware of "garbage city" on the way to the St. Simon Cave Church. It's very disturbing.
