This is a great museum. Really gives you a feel of the area. An overlooked jewel. Don’t miss it. The admission price is reasonable
We visited Cairns and found the museum an excellent resource to know and understand ts origins and how it has developed. Great insight into the different industries that were integral to the city's development. Came away with an appreciation of the place and its people.
The exhibition is quite rich. There are a lot of details about prominent people of Cairns since the beginning. The aboriginal part is also valuable to see and think about.
We had a lovely time at the museum. Not only was it very interesting, but we got to escape the heat, and one of the local tour guides Tony gave us lots of extra information about the displays. He was a very knowledgeable man and we appreciated his effort to educate us on the history of Cairns 🤩
Upon arrival I was welcomed in a friendly manner, and was given all the information I needed. I was suggested to start on floor 2 and so I did. On this floor after time has passed by I was greeted by another member of staff (philipa?) she was lovely and shown me the interactive table which I was unsure how to use at first. Toilets were clean as well as the whole building, and the museum itself was very educational for someone from the UK not knowing a great deal about carins. Thank you Museum team!!
An absolutely amazing museum with so much insight into the history of Cairns. We would happily have spent more time there and it would be a great place to take kids too. Lovely views from the balcony too. Definitely worth a visit.
It was a very great activity that I did with my classmates. I enjoyed the creative distribution of the place and designed spaces. We had a pleasant tourguide. And also, the museum is open for people who want to volunteer, a great opportunity to involve more in Cairns culture.
We were given a private tour around the museum, going through each exhibit. I’ve been a local in Cairns for over 10 years and still didn’t half as much as what our tour guide told us. The exhibit around the 1890’s is interesting in regards to the indigenous relations and stories that came out of it.
Took part in a guided tour of the museum, for a compact, small-ish looking space, Cairns Museum packs in alot of fascinating information, visuals and media about Cairns' 20th & 21st century history, I would highly recommend this museum for anyone local or visiting to check out for a comprehensive overview of Cairns' history, put aside at least an hour.
Very focused on the mixed history of Cairns and its diversity of populations. Lots of memorabilia which was well labelled and displayed. Friendly staff who would encourage me to visit again since it needed more time to absorb the facts.
Very interesting. I love history and this museum was really relevant to the history of Cairns and how it came to be. This was my first visit to Cairns and I really enjoyed all the exhibits.
As a Cairns local, it was only a matter of time before I headed to the Cairns Museum to see the local history of our region. The set up and displays were amazing, briefly taking visitors on a journey through the history of Far North Queensland. I must note, this is a small museum, as soon as I was immersed in the story and journey, it was over. I will be returning over the next few months to check out any new exhibits.
The Cairns museum is a really well put together museum that provides a detailed history and Cairns. If you're interested in Cairns history (visitors and locals alike), it's well worth the visit.
I especially enjoyed the aboriginal artifacts. All volunteers were very eager to explain Cairn's interesting history. Thank you to Sasha, Dee and Tony!
Cairns Museum is the place that you shouldn't forget to visit. It is in the middle of the city. There you can find a group of extremely friendly guides who are always ready to make your experience the best. In the museum, you could know more about lifestyle, history, events, animals, indigenous people in Cairns and why lake street called like that, could you imagine why ???? It was an amazing experience, you will never regret going there.
Enjoyed perusing the history of Cairns and it's characters Staff very friendly and knowledgeable Highly recommended
We were flying home the next day and had some time in Cairns to sightsee. Why not have a look at the museum? It's right in the middle of town so no wasting time getting there. The building shows nothing from the street . We were instructed to go up to the 3rd floor and work down. We were asked, do we want a guided tour by one of the volunteers? No , thinking we only wanted to skim the place and leave . As it turned out , we joined onto a tour ( of 4 people) . Gee it was good! One of those places that far exceeds what you expect. Apart from the story it tells about Cairns and it's people ( both old and new) the building and it's sensitive restoration is extreamly refreshing to experience. I think it's the oldest building in Cairns. Soak up some atmosphere in the upstairs verandah. A real slice of Cairns of another time.
An excellent museum presented in a contemporary manner. Give me a good overview of the history of Cairns. Very pleasant and knowledgeable volunteers who are very willing to tell you more about the history. Recommended to start on the top floor and worh your way down to the ground floor. Air-conditioned so it would be an excellent place to visit when its hot and humid. Complementary iced water is available on the first floor veranda. Admission charge is very reasonable at $15.00 for an adult.
After moving from Sydney to Cairns permanently over a year ago it was time to visit Cairns Museum & called in on Friday 23/08/19. The Museum entrance fee cost AUD $15.00 & I'm made very welcome by staff. The Museum is displayed on three levels either using the staircase or the lift. The displays are very informative with lots of interesting details / history on Cairns & a there's a seating area for watching a movie clip of Cairns past. You could easily spend around 2-3 hours inside if your happy to read all the details, staff guide available to explain about the past. Overall the Museum is very well presented with loads of information & feel the Museum is more suitable for adults & teenagers. Highly recommend a visit for locals & tourists. Small gift shop on enetering the Museum & a bathroom inside the Museum.
This was a good experience to understand how Cairns came to Life and to understand why it still exist today. Well wort a visit.
Congratulations Cairns Historical Society - the Museum has fascinating displays with well-told stories, great items on show, and lovely staff. Worth every penny of the admission price, and then some.
We ended up here when we had an afternoon to kill after arriving in Cairns. After first turning down the offer of a tour we ended up chatting with one of the museum guides and he showed us round most of the museum- would DEFINITELY recommend taking a guide. Reading all the signs is good but the guides are incredibly knowledgable and are able to bring the stories to life, helping the experience become much more enjoyable! We learnt so much in the short space of time and had to leave before seeing everything as they were closing which was disappointing. Would recommend a couple of hours here, even though it's small there is so much to learn!
The Cairns Museum is a very keenly priced activity that is worth every dollar. It has interactive speakers and also great guided tours over 3 levels. I learnt a lot and kwpt cool roo for about 3 hrs.. Great!
I've visited my fair share of city museums, and I can truthfully say this is one of the best I've ever seen. It's well curated, sophisticated, and not too much so as to be overwhelming. A great way to gain knowledge and insight into the region and its history.
Make sure you visit the History Museum when you're in Cairns, where the ultra-friendly staff explain how Cairns came to be, and with lots of artwork and photos of ancient civilizations, it's a great place to get to know Cairns in full! My favorite is the little wooden boat from the stairs on the first and second floors!
The Cairns Museum is very centrally located in the city. It offers an insight into the history of the city and the region. The museum was designed with a lot of love. However, it could certainly have been made even more out of it. Certain contributions sometimes seem somewhat superficial. That's why if you're there and you miss the museum, it's not bad.
