Itinerary
Start your self-guided wildlife encounter at Kuranda Koala Gardens. At the gardens, you’ll get up-close to freshwater crocodiles and have the chance to feed kangaroos and wallabies. Feeding the kangaroos and wallabies is conducted under supervision from the amazing team at the gardens and the animals have the freedom to accept the food you are offering or go and relax ~ being a kangaroo is tough work!. You'll also see the elusive wombats – these sleepy, shy animals are the world's largest burrowing mammals and aren’t often seen in the wild, so don’t miss them! You also have the opportunity to see the rare Greater Bilby, the Northern Bettong, Mahogany Glider and more in the new ‘Nocturnal Wonders’ exhibit.
While at Kuranda Koala Gardens, you’ll receive your ticket for Birdworld, where Australia’s largest flock of free-flying birds awaits! Just a short walking distance from the Koala Gardens, this massive flight aviary is landscaped with water features and rainforest plants, home to more than 80 species of native and rare birds. Spot cassowaries, increasingly rare in the wild, as well as bowerbirds, parrots, lorikeets, cheeky cockatoos and other Australian birds. You’ll also see international visitors such as South American macaws.

So good the animals were very cute. We got to pat a koala and have our photo taken .Loved this place .Bird world was great the birds were very interactive.
Close up and personal with the animali and Birds! Unique and a must if you go to Kuranda by train or Skyrail.
This experience is a must do if you like nature. You get a chance to feed the kangaroo and connect to nature.
What a fab little place to see all the Australian animals and we had our picture taken with a koala !
Small place but worth a visit to take a picture with koala. Bird sanctuary has beautiful birds in vibrant colors. I was happy to see kangaroos and few other animals in this small place.
Too great little family owned parks say a hour each is about right . Just to note the koala pictures are stood by the animal touching it rather than holding it as in past years . $28 for 1 person in a pic price goes up a bit depending on people numbers
All the koalas are in small enclosures hardly anywhere to go made to be held all day and touched by people. Extremely cruel I really regret giving them money.
$21 entry- poor attractions on a very small scale- barely lasted 30 minutes to see everything. Would not recommend and wish hadn’t wasted money on this.
Loved the Koala Park and Bird world. However, I don't agree with having pictures taken with Koalas, they should be left alone. Some of the enclosures appeared too small for some of the other animals. A good place to visit and feeding the birds was a highlight, especially after a Macaw sat on my head!
Very disappointed. Encouraged to book online then unable to book koala experience because already sold out. Very small area.
very enjoyable, seeing and holding a koala, and the other amazing wildlife here. One small criticism would be the macropod area, in my opinion too small for the wallabies to be able to hop around. Otherwise, all good, 3 hours well spent.
This has always been our favorite place. We love the birds but were refused entry because of a rule which has NOT been advertised on the web site. If you have any kind of visible piercings or are wearing a lot of necklaces or bracelets they MUST all be removed before you are allowed in. For us this was difficult whilst standing at the entrance and should be in the rules of sales and entry. You should be told this when buying tickets online and not have to go up to Kauranda and then lose your money because you are NOT allowed entry. I understand the reason was that the birds will pull and tug on the jewelry BUT they should have said BEFORE! No one seemed to care about our efforts either.
Getting to hold a koala while getting my photo taken, and being able to feed some kangaroos and wallabies
I honestly regret going here. All of the animals look so scared and unhappy. I was distressed by the whole experience. There was a wallaby with a joey in her pouch - some people weren't doing anything wrong trying to take a photo but she was clearly scared and had no where to hide so she hopped right into a window at full speed thinking she could escape. Then she just crouched near a tree trying to hide as best she could while people threw food at her. There's snakes and lizards in glass tanks with people tapping and banging on them, all of the animals have no where to hide or get away from people. It was upsetting. I wish I hadn't paid to support this venture.
Avoid booking online: the photography sessions only allow you to pet the koala, not to hold it in your arms like in the sessions you can buy on site. This is not absolutely explained, neither on the website nor when you arrive at their desk: we booked (and arrived) from Italy and the disappointment of my 11yrs old daughter when she discovered she couldn’t embrace the panda was enormous. You can just pet the koala placed on a small eucalyptus plant, smile and in less than a minute you’re done (next one please). You should see the photo they took of us, both the paid one (35 AUD) and the ones taken with our smartphone: without love, without worrying in the least about the fact that for us that would have been the only chance in our life to live that experience and take that memory with us to Italy (which, for those who are not too comfortable with geography, is almost two days away by plane). Back to the whole experience, the koalas and other animals are well-kept but the environment is cramped, mostly delimited by old fences and sheet metal, some of which is rusty. What strikes you most negatively, however, are the people who work there, not very kind and not very attentive to the guests who have difficulty speaking and understanding their language. Having said that, with the right (not high) expectations, if you’ll be there only once in a lifetime, we suggest to have that experience.
This tour was wonderful! Be advised that if you want to hold a koala, you need to schedule early. We were able to get the last spot to have a picture taken with the koala. as the tourist season approaches, I’m sure it will be more difficult to schedule those when you get there. We went into the bird exhibit which was very fun. Bird would come and sit on your shoulder. We did buy for a minimal amount some food for them, when took a little nibble on my finger and the first aid at the desk was great. We ate lunch at the restaurant and had the Barramundi was delicious. My husband and I both got it because they were out of the fish and chips. I was never so excited to find out that they were out of something because this was I’m sure far better. The only problem we had was that we took an Uber from Cairns and we’re not able to find an Uber to take us back. We were able to get a rideshare with the help of some amazing women at the visitor center. I would highly recommend this.
This is a lovely sanctuary which shows the best of Australia’s indigenous species. The Koala bears are just adorable!
We have family travelling from India. The experiences were personal and friendly. We had a great time.
Great place. Not huge but doesn't need to be. Hugged a koala and fed some roos! Lots of different animals to see so I'd recommend a visit. Birds and butterflies also worth a visit. Combine it with the train ride if you have time.
we got to feed some of the animals. also got my picture taken holding a koala. the place is small enough so you can see everything in a short amount of time
Loved being able to cuddle a koala and hold a python. The exhibits were good and lots to see. Would advise to go to Birdworld earlier in the day, by the time we got there they had run out of food and we didn't get the same close up experience that we saw others have there that had been able to get food.
The bird world was kinda sad. The birds have very little space to move around. We thought it would be little more open.
We went to both Birdworld and Koala Gardens. Was a little disappointed in Koala Gardens as you would expect it to be full of Koalas. Unfortunately its not, you do see around 7 Koalas in various exhibits which are very cute. There is a lot of other animals which makes it more than a Koala Garden and probably needs re-naming. They have wallabies, kangaroos, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and a few other animals. There is more emphasis on getting your photo taken with a Koala, which I believe you really need to book as early as you can. Even though I was a bit disappointed, this exhibit is still worth a visit. We also went into Bird world, which was really fun. Having all the birds free to fly and poop on you. The macaws, cassowary, lorikeets, ducks, and so many more to see and let settle on your arm, head. Don't worry if you don't have seed for them, look around in the feeders and grab a handful. Probably much preferred the bird world to Koala garden as it stayed true to its name. Highly recommended while your at Kuranda.
Better price than at the ticket window. Koalas were cute. Birds were very active and quite entertaining.
Loved being able to see the koalas up so close. Had never fed birds and they were intriguing to watch eat. Very clean in both places
We had such a great time! We were a bit weary after reading some reviews but we honestly had such a great time! It was really well taken care of & everything was accessible and set out so well. It’s a small animal sanctuary, don’t go in expecting a city zoo, it’s not… but it is great.
Great day to see the Koalas and the birds. We really enjoyed our day! So glad we got to hold a koala. The gondola was a fun experience as well.
Both parks were great! We truly enjoyed the birds the most. It was cool having the birds eat from your hands and sit on your shoulders!
I loved both these parks. My highlight at the Koala park was seeing the Quokkas. So cute. Very pretty park, lots of animals. You can hand fees the roos. Birdworld is just gorgeous. I loved seeing all the beautiful coloured birds. They are very friendly. Great park to visit. Recommended visiting these lovely parks.🦜🥰💜🥰🐨
This was a cute setup but you definitely get through it quite quickly. It’s fairly decent value for money. Only criticism was I didn’t really see a lot of staff floating around keeping an eye on the tourist and making sure rules were being followed.
Holding the koala and taking a photo with him ,, as well as patting/interacting all the kangaroos etc :)
Nice to see koala and the birds and was excited to feed the kangaroos. It was a superb experience to interact with the birds and we all enjoyed the trip very much.
It was a real bad experience for us as we were not given the right photo with koala....and even though they took 4 photos ....no option was given to us for which one to choose .....where as a family after us were treated better ...it was complete discrimination done .... the staff was pathetic
Good experiance. Worth the money. The wombats were very energetic. Would definitely recommend to visit.
Kids had an awesome experience. Staff were very friendly and helpful will definitely be back to visit
We went when it was pouring down rain, but still a good experience. We got to feed the kangaroos which was daunting but they’re actually really friendly. Kuranda village also has lots of great things to see and do after.
This area is quite new by the looks. Its very well set up and will hopefully come up great in a few years. Very much setup for overseas tourists regarding koala holding and grabbing those memories photo's. Rest of the park has a few australian native animals which was good. We entered through the Birdworld entrance within the Heritage Markets.
This truly was a worthwhile stopover during my time at Kuranda Village. The park is divided in to three sections (Birdworld, butterfly house and the Australian wildlife park) you can pay for admission for individual parks or get a good discount for paying for all three at the same time. Expect a good welcome from the birds when you entering BirdWorld particularly when your carrying a paperbag full of bird treats. They'll sit on your shoulders, start chatting to you and enthuastically rummage through your bag of treats. The collection of birds is huge consisting of macaws, lorikeets, galahs and other birds that are both native and from afar. By the time I the Australian wildlife section, all the animals were having a good snooze (I'm assuming this is due to it being midday and all). There was still plenty to see with plenty of kangaroos, wallabies and koalas. After the wildlife park, I went to check out the butterfly house. The collection of butterflies was absolutely huge and there's even an opportunity to check out their breeding facilities. The staff at the parks were fantastic, friendly and approachable. Definitely well worth checking out as part of your trip to Kuranda vIllage
Really enjoyed both bird world and Koala Gardens! If you are holding a koala, get there at the beginning of the photo times. Otherwise the wait is long. We were first in line and loved having the opportunity. Also getting there early to feed the wallaby’s and kangaroos is a good idea before it gets to hot. The food is free and they fill up quickly. Make it your first stop in Karunda. They go and enjoy bird world. And purchase the food. It is well worth it. The birds flock to the people with the food bags. Such a neat experience to interact with the colorful birds!
An enjoyable half hour or so, spent in close contact with some beautiful and very colourful birds.Children would love it.
The bird Sanctuary was splendid. There were birds of various species flying around in a wonderful free environment and tons of interaction with many of them. The koala area or zoo was limited.
With only 6 hours between Cairns and an international flight we had to choose carefully to see as much as possible. Kuranda was perfect. They offer different parks such as animals, a bird park, and a butterfly farm. All in one village. We caught the local bus for 6 Oz dollars as a taxi was very expensive. It leaves from central station first bus 06:45. The town sleeps till 10 and the Kaola park opens at 09:00 so we wondered around waiting for 09:00. Unfortunately our return bus had to be the 10am one as the next one was too late for us to catch our flight. In that hour we had a chance to see all the precious furry creatures of Australia. The animals are in excellent condition with spotless enclosures and consideration for the nocturnal creatures kept in the perfect environment. They have a lovely shop to walk through and don’t miss the famous old aero plane outside! Sadly the man who sells the tickets is super grumpy and most unobliging, however we met MARK inside who went the extra mile to make sure we saw everything and got our precious photo and cuddle. Him and the photographer went beyond our expectations to create a memory of lifetime. THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS. There are cubes to feed the little wallabies which was also very special. A highlight of our trip
Both Koala Garden and Birdworld were very small wildlife parks. You will only need an hour or so to visit both. We particularly liked the Birdworld. My daughter had a lovely time feeding and interacting with lots of birds.
If you come here to pet wildlife and get a photo shoot with a Koala, then it might be worth going - Otherwise.... just dont. This is a terrible place, where everything is constructed to try and rip you off for every penny and the attractions seems in bad condition and not much care is taken for animals nor for visitors. For us this was one of the worst experiences overall in visiting Australia. It is really not a nice place :( The only nice part is the butterfly area, which actually is kind of cool.
Visit the place with my family recently. As locals We try avoiding tourist places, but it was a nice experience. Organized and fair prices
Lovely little wildlife park. Good mixture of Aussie animals. Decent price for entry and holding a koala. Excellent customer service. Spent approximately an hour there
My husband and I visited Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld on our recent vacation. We were able to cuddle a koala, feed wallabies, and have birds land on our heads at Birdworld. What a great day!
We visited the gardens on a rainy day in May and we’re impressed with the cleanliness and professionalism of a small zoo. We got our koala photo done and we were delighted that each koala was only held a certain number of times and if they seemed upset/ bothered they were immediately removed. We stayed for the 2pm feeding of the nocturnal animals and the wombats, and it was the absolute highlight. The keepers answered lots of questions and gave great narration on the animals as species, their conservation status, what the staff does for enrichment, and fun facts about the individual animals.
We only went in here because we had a little while to spare before our train journey back. It's a small place, however, their koala experience was amazing. We all enjoyed a proper hold (and cuddle) of the koalas whilst our photos were being taken. There was no rushing and the keeper kept hold of the koala after we were all done, so that we could have a chat and see the koala up close. They were really generous with their time and knowledge. If you only do one koala experience in Port Douglas/Cairns, then do this one. It was great fun.
