This tour was the ABSOLUTE BEST. Matthieu is beyond knowledgeable. My favorite part was how fun and interactive the tasting was. I learned so much. I LAUGHED so much (and this was before we even had any alcohol!). The wine was also lovely (truly I don’t even like wine, I just felt like we should do a tasting because we’re in Burgundy…but now I actually enjoy wine. Like I said, incredible experience).

Wine Compass was one of the highlights of our time in Dijon. The tasting was fun, highly informative, and exceptionally well done. Matthieu is charming, engaging, and remarkably knowledgeable, not only about Dijon and Burgundy but also about wines from Spain, Italy, and other regions around the world. He also has a great sense of humor, which kept the session lively and approachable even as we covered some fairly complex subjects. We began with an excellent introduction to the geology of Burgundy and why it matters so much to the wines produced here. Mathieu explained Burgundy’s classification system, including village wines, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru, and then helped us understand how to approach a wine through its aromas, structure, and complexity. The tasting itself consisted of six wines, all served blind: two Chardonnays and four Pinot Noirs. Tasting them without seeing the labels made the experience particularly valuable. Rather than being influenced by a producer or appellation, we had to concentrate on what was actually in the glass. I came away with a much better understanding of just how important the nose is when evaluating wine and how aromas can reveal the complexity and character of Burgundy wines. I learned a great deal without ever feeling as though I was sitting through a lecture. If you are visiting Dijon and want to understand Burgundy wine rather than simply drink it, I highly recommend Wine Compass and Matthieu. An excellent experience from beginning to end.
Matthieu was very cool! The wine tasting was in his little wine cellar, the ambiance was super. The event was funny and interesting and we tasted really good wines. I can only recommend!
Had a great time! The guide was very English friendly and was happy to answer any questions we had and wasn’t afraid to delve deeper into those topics. I learned a lot about the smells and taste of wine, along with the history and making of the wines in both France and Italy. Would easily recommend if you are in the area!
This experience was beyond what I expected. Somehow I was the only person who booked that particular day and Matt was absolutely wonderful. The old cellar is a fantastic setting which stays cool even during this heat wave! I didn’t have much tasting experience so he first went through the different aspects of how to taste wines. We tasted 3 whites and 3 reds, all different and all enjoyable in their own right, This is perfect if you’re looking for a guide who makes the tasting more personal and takes the time to really talk about the wines with you.
I loved this tasting! Matt is very knowledgeable and passionate, but is also able to make the experience fun, and the world of wine seems less intimidating with him. I'm way more knowledgeable about wine and about food & wine pairing than I was before the workshop.
Insightful and relaxed Wine tasting. Our host spoke perfect English and we learnt a lot! We totally recommend this wine experience in Dijon
Amazing experience - not to be missed
It was a wonderful experience with a very entertaining Sommelier that has a different and modern approach. He Is not looking for you to taste what he wants you to taste, but instead gives you the right guidance to explore your wine. Very knowledgeable guy. We have done many wine tasting and this was one of the more funnier ones without loosing the focus of explaining the wines of the Bourgogne.
If you really want to enjoy learning a lot about wines, this is your chance. Relaxed, thorough, friendly - Matt is a gem
My friends and I booked this class to learn more about the region and Burgundy wine. This was such a good class and had great wine tastings. Matthieu was very knowledgeable and explained things in an easy way to understand. Would highly recommend!
Matthieu was charming and personable and gave us a wonderful class, taking us through the nuances of wine tasting, He has great knowledge and was able to relate this to us to allow us to maximise our enjoyment of the wines. He even had awareness of our native Australian wines and showed an interest in our local wineries, Highly recommended.
Would definitely recommend this tasting to anyone. In a cozy but impressive cellar, Matthieu gave us a great experience. As beginners, Matthieu was very patient and gave us a detailed lesson on tasting Burgundy wines, as well as the region and its history. We left with good knowledge of Burgundy wines, the main flavour profiles to look out for, and even some food pairings. Thank you Matthieu!
We were lucky enough to have just us for the tasting. Matthew was extremely knowledgeable and very warm and friendly. The well stocked cellar had an amazing atmosphere and was a welcomed relief from the heat! The 6 tastings were of excellent and surprising wines. Highly recommend this and would happily do it again!
I had such a great time with Matt (and wines). The story of the region is fascinating and really adds to the experience. Matt guided me through the tasting process and had a conversation about each bottle. I felt like a welcome guest having a mutually (hopefully :-) ) enjoyable conversation - and not just a client. Thank you and best wishes!
My wife and I had the pleasure of a fabulous wine tasting event in this cozy wine cellar. Our host Matthieu was very knowledgeable and he really showed a great deal of patience with us, or should I say me, because of my olfactory limitations. My wife, however could truly appreciate his explanations of the subtleties for the various wines’ nose. We were able to taste five wines from different areas that covered the spectrum from a light white to a more robust red and we truly enjoyed our time with our host as well as the ambience of the setting. An all around great experience that we highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and learned some things too. Our host Matt was pleasant, entertaining and knowledgeable. Well worth it
The wine tasting was a super experience. Matthieu took a lot of time for us and introduced us to the art of wine with a great deal of knowledge. Highly recommended.
Small, very pleasant vaulted cellar; Mathieu, an enthusiast, knew how to offer us a complete tasting while reminding us that it is about using our 5 senses to be able to appreciate wine. Very good quality of the wine tasted and its local accompaniments. Thank you The Vichyssois
A very pleasant moment and a very interesting tasting. The wines were interesting and diverse, with a special mention for the Monthélie Matthieu's welcome is pleasant and the explanations are clear, especially for beginners. A nice experience, especially for discovering local production.
A wonderful guided tasting by the sympathetic expert Mathieu. He introduces white and red wines from the region and introduces the basics of tasting techniques. 10/10 would do again:)
