Shir’s class was a great experience. It was so nice to be able to learn from and speak to a true local

Itinerary
Discover the secrets of Argentine cuisine in this hands-on cooking class, hosted in my home in a quiet residential neighborhood of Buenos Aires. You'll be welcomed with alfajores and mate, our traditional infusion, and I'll share the rituals that surround them. Then we’ll start off with the cooking class: I'll teach you how to make empanadas from scratch, both the dough and the filling. While we cook, we'll enjoy a classic picada — an Argentine charcuterie board — to nibble on as we cook . Once the food is ready, we'll sit down together to enjoy the meal we've prepared, paired with a glass of Malbec and good conversation, and finish with a classic Argentine dessert. I'll guide you every step of the way, sharing the techniques, the history behind each dish, and the regional traditions that shape Argentine cooking. This is an excellent opportunity to discover how locals live and pick up insider tips on great places to visit and eat in the city. You'll spend a relaxed day in the comfort of a local's cozy home in a beautiful residential neighborhood, inside Buenos Aires' first certified Passive House. Most ingredients are organic, beef is grass-fed and eggs are pasture-raised.

My daughter and I has such a great time wit Shir! She is a great cook, fun, welcoming and we felt at ease with her the moment we met her. She can teach er class in Spanish or in English. Over the course of the morning we cooked different empanadas in a WONDERFUL kitchen. Unlike other schools where they only teach you how to assemble the empanadas, Shir taught us how to make the dough and the filling and we practiced how to make our own empanadas. We ate together at her table, with Argentinian wine. Shir taught us a lot about Argentinian customs, maté, pancakes. It was as though we were invited for lunch at a friend's house. We highly recommend it. We never felt rushed, everything is super clean, she is efficient and communication with her before the class was very quick and easy. She is very professional in her approach to cooking yet, so warm in making us feel at home. Thank you Shir :)
We really enjoyed our time with Shir! We had wonderful conversation, delicious food, and so much fun! It was such a good way to get to know more about the culture. Highly recommend!
An absolute delight of an experience! Shir opened up her home to me and shared with me the traditions of a nation. From trying mate to empanadas themselves. I ended up having a private class due to the others not being able to make it. I can't wait to take the techniques I learned during our time together and try them out at home!
I had the most wonderful time learning to make empanadas during a personalized cooking class in this charming local home. The neighborhood itself is absolutely beautiful quiet, leafy, and full of character, and the home felt warm and welcoming from the moment I arrived. The host was fantastic! She was patient, encouraging, and clearly passionate about sharing her culture. The class was perfectly personalized, and I loved getting hands on with the dough, fillings, and folding techniques. Everything tasted incredible, and I left with new skills I can’t wait to try at home. What made the experience even richer was how she shared stories about local customs, including the traditions around yerba mate. It turned the cooking class into a genuine cultural immersion that went far beyond just food. If you’re looking for an authentic, heartfelt experience rather than a generic tourist activity, this is it. Highly recommend, and one of the highlights of my entire trip!
The cooking class was geweest! Very friendly host and we did the workshop at her beautiful home! It was a great expertise and recommend it to everyone!
Such a lovely opportunity. Shirley is an excellent hostess and chef. This was such a delightful way to spend a few quiet hours learning about the culture and the food. I’m pretty confident that I can make the empanadas at home or for a party after this hands-on training. Truly a great experience!
Shir was wonderful. She opened up her home for us, made sure we were all comfortable. She had everything prepared and was very patient with all of us. Altogether there were 3 of us in the class. Shir spoke very well english and demonstrated all we needed to do before giving up the aprons and letting us to do all the cooking. She also introduced us to the ways of drinking the classic and popular Mate drink. I thought it was interesting when Shir said that Argentinians can be very relaxed about many things but not about their Mate drinking! She also introduced us to the very delicious Alfajores cookies with Dulce de Leche filling...yum! And at the end of the class she made homemade Flan for us....so delicious. So this class was much more then just an empanada cooking class....Shir introduced us to 1) baked delicious meat and veggie & cheese and onion empanadas 2) mate & alfajores 3) Homade flan 4) some Argentinian culture. I highly recommend this wonderful class.
Litterally have 0 complaints, this experience was exactly what we asked for and allowed us to enjoy some good mate, good food, good wine, and especially good company and laughs. Thanks again!
I was looking for an authentic, local culinary experience and this didn't disappoint! Shir was very welcoming, spoke English well, and gave a lot of informative tips about Argentinian culture and cuisine. My husband and I enjoyed conversing with the others in the group and learning how to make empanadas from scratch.
Shir was so lovely and welcomed myself and my husband in her home. It was much more than a simple cooking class - we learned about Buenos Aires, the tradition of yerba mate and got to know each other in such an intimate setting. We are looking forward to put the newly acquired skills to use and try to make empanadas at home. Very kindly, Shir also provided us with a recipe book so this would be easier. This was hands down one of the highlights of our stay in Buenos Aires!
Shir’s empanada class was an amazing experience that resulted not only in a delicious meal that we learned to make and later enjoyed as our lunch, but also a touch of true cultural immersion. As we learned to cook she shared stories providing a glance into what it’s like to be a local resident of the beautiful city of Buenos Aires. We started the class with a lesson about mate, tasted it for the first time, and sampled two kinds of alfajores. Our class ended with a delicious meal, dessert, and lots of laughs shared together as a group. This class was a highlight of our vacation!!!
Shir is a wonderful teacher and host! I came alone and felt very welcomed into her home. I learned more than I could’ve expected about mate, empanadas, Buenos Aires, and Argentine customs. Shir is so genuine and really took the time to get to know the other guests and me. She was able to create such a warm space for conversation, which not many people can do so naturally. Can’t forget about the food - the empanadas were delicious and now I have a little recipe booklet to take home as well. Great way to end my trip to BA, I highly recommend.
What an amazing way to learn about Argentinian food culture. Shir is an incredibly teacher and has so much knowledge about the food, the ingredients and techniques needed to make an authentic empanada Argentina. You’ll take part on every single step of making empanadas. From tasting herbs to making dough from scratch. The hours flew by as she made us so comfortable at her kitchen. Great experience! Highly recommend it!
My husband and I took this class, and it was a wonderful experience. Shir reached out to us ahead of time to ask about any allergies or dietary restrictions. We both loved that he class was in her home. It made the process seem like it would be easy to replicate in our own kitchen, using normal tools and ingredients that most people have or would be easy to obtain. The experience was very hands on, and it was fun and satisfying to see your efforts result in something tasty that you got to enjoy. We were sent home with recipes, so recreating the experience in our own kitchen should be very possible. This was a lovely way to spend a few hours of our day, and we both highly recommend it.
This was so fun. Shir was a great host and teacher. It felt like I was at a friends house, having a great conversation and cooking. So relaxed and comfortable, just a great environment. We were introduced to mate tea, enjoyed some wine and with Shir’s guidance made some tasty empanadas. Highly recommend a visit. You will not regret. Thank you again Shir
If you have any interest in cooking, learning new skills, or just enjoying some Argentinian hospitality, Shir's empanada making class is perfect for you. Shir caters to all skill-levels and at the end of you have a delicious lunch of homemade empanadas (and recipes to take home). Not only that, Shir introduces you to the cultural practice of drinking mate and eating alfajores. Be sure to leave room for Shir's homemade flan! She's a wonderful hostess, and we're so grateful for her hospitality and her expertise. Her class is a wonderful way to have a unique experience in BA. Also, Shir's neighborhood is lovely, so if you have some extra time to walk around before or after the class, take a stroll on the tree-lined streets of Pedro Goyena Avenue.
We had a brilliant time cooking with Shir. We joined her and another couple back in November and would highly recommend. Shir was a great host, from the communication before in helping us find her place to throughout the session. Shir was really welcoming and friendly and patient with us when teaching us how to make the empanadas. We got to learn a bit more about Argentina and make some delicious empanadas! Would highly recommend this.
We had a great time having mate, alfajores and cooking our own empanadas! Shir was a great host as well as cook/teacher. I went there for a team building event and had nothing but great feedback about the entire experience: cooking, learning, knowledge gained... Anyway, everything was great and everyone very satisfied. Besides, the empanadas were delicious and Shir was a great host, teaching and educating us about not only cultural aspects of the country but also about culinary! I strongly recommend this class!!!
This experience was way more than an empanada class, I highly recommend to anyone. Shir is very welcoming and you get a real argentinian culture experience. The empanada class was amazing, can’t wait to try at home. :) It was a pleasure to meet you and be part of this day with the other participants. Thank’s a lot Shir for your very positive experience!
What an absolutely delightful experience we had with Shari in her home learning about mate tea and how to make empanadas. This experience was a highlight of our time in Buenos Aires. Shari was so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable! She had everything organized when we got there and the flow of different things we did was perfect. It felt like we were at a dinner party of a friend and helping out with the meal preparations. The empanadas we made were incredible and with all of the tips and careful explanations from Shari on how to get them perfectly moist and flavorful on the inside while maintaining the crisp exterior, we will be able to make these like an expert when we get home. Shari is very particular about cleanliness and we all washed our hands multiple times before we started each phase of the food prep experience. So we could relax and not be concerned about food safety at all. She is truly an expert in the kitchen while also connecting with each participant quickly and with exceptional social skills all in perfect english. Her neighborhood is central and safe to walk around as well. Overall, we highly recommend Shari and her cooking experience to anyone who wants to have a fun and unique experience during a visit to Buenos Aires.
Shir made us feel welcome in her home right from the beginning. The introduction to the Mate ceremony and all the information on everything we asked was great. Shirly is a perfect teacher, means she instructs and supports perfectly, so that you succeed. So we could enjoy our empanadas and everything else. We can strongly recommend her cooking class!
Shir was absolutely incredible. She was responsive and communicative in helping us arrive to her home. We learned so much about the ritual of mate and the making of the empanadas! Her home was lovely as well as the neighborhood! This was definitely a highlight of our trip and we cannot wait to try the recipes in our own home!
It really was a very intimate and welcoming setting. It didn’t feel like a class, though it was, but like a friend showing you how to prepare a meal. Shir’s tips of the city and sights were very helpful and in hindsight would have started the trip off with her class to take advantage. Conversation was very easy with the small group. Highly recommend the experience.
Amazing experience. Shir was a great host! I recommend it to anyone looking for a real argentinian experience.😊
This was a lovely part of our time in Buenos Aires. Shir was warm and friendly, and demystified the Mate we had seen all over Argentina. Then we made empanadas together, a great experience we will replicate at home. Dessert was great, chatting was great, we all had a super time including my 12-year-old.
The class was so fun and Shir did a great job taking about the culture and Empanadas. I loved how small and intimate it was.
What a fun class this was! Learning the matè ritual and how to prepare it was great. Learning how and making empañadas was so much fun and I cannot wait to get home and make them for my family. The class was in Shir's beautiful apartment, with matè, picada, vino and of course the empanadas, with delicious flan w/dulce de leche for dessert. Definitely can recommend if you have a half day in Buenos Aires. Go at the beginning of your trip and get all of her tips for the city.
This was a wonderful experience! Shir is extremely knowledgeable and we learned a great deal about mate and empanadas. Her apartment is lovely and I highly recommend this cooking class. We are so glad we booked this- a highlight of our time in BA.
I had so much fun in my class. I always wanted to learn how to make empanadas, I tried several tutorials on youtube, but they didn't help at all. Finally, I got it, thanks to Shir. I made my first empanadas at home using Shir's recipe and they were delicious! Great experience, Shir is a very kind and great teacher.
We have done a lot of cooking classes while traveling and this was by far the best. Wonderful experience with Shirl in her beautiful home. My teen girls loved the experience too. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Buenos Aires
We had an amazing experience in Shirly's class, where she generously hosts in her cozy and welcoming home! Not only do you get a thorough step-by-step walk-through of this South American staple, but she combines a lot of discussion of both cuisine and everyday Argentinean culture through friendly and natural discussion. She is well-travelled and educated, and was it was a pleasure to learn not only about empanadas and the mate culture, but any other subject that came up for discussion (whether it be history, politics, or general information). She was extremely kind and thoughtful, and has a very warm demeanour. If you're looking for a relaxed but productive activity in Buenos Aires, I highly recommend her course!
Shir's empanada cooking class was amazing! Not only did she demonstrate her empanada making skills she also introduced us to the Argentinian rituals of mate making and sharing. We shared Argentinian wine and a charcuterie consisting of salami and smoked cheese and followed by her delicious flan with dulce de leche. Her english language skills are excellent and she even suggested shopping areas for us visit. Would highly recommend.
Shir was well organized, pleasant and friendly. She taught us to make several kinds of empanadas, explained the ritual of mate and taught us a lot about Buenos Aires history and custom. It was a lot of fun.
We had a great stay at Shirly's place and learned the fun way how to make tasty empanadas. Very friendly host and it was great to meet and exchange with other Argentina travellers.
Shir was amazing! This was a highlight of our visit to Buenos Aires and highly recommend. The empanadas were absolutely delicious and we learned so much more than just how to make empanadas.
This is a lovely experience with Shir. Make time for this when in Buenos Aires! It was informative, fun, and all takes place in her family's apartment. Thanks si much Shir!
Our class with Shir was one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Buenos Aires. I had great communication with Shir leading up to the date, and it was very easy to find her place. Unfortunately she was unable to give us a tour of her local market, the historic Mercado del Progreso. However, she offered us a lot of helpful hints and encouraged us to visit on our own, which we did and then walked just a few short blocks to her apartment for the class. After meeting Shir and our classmate, we all snacked on some delicious alfajores and shared a mate (our first!). We made empanadas from scratch next, and then had wine and charcuterie while we waited for them to cook. After devouring our scrumptious creations hot out of the oven, we finished with a flan that Shir had made that morning and a coffee. It was quite a lunch! Shir was a great teacher and wonderful companion for the afternoon, keeping the class moving along while still answering all of our many questions. We had a fantastic time and I would definitely recommend this class to anyone visiting Buenos Aires!
Shir was a fantastic teacher and we had a wonderful time. She was patient, knowledgeable, friendly and her English was perfect. The information about mate, Argentina and empanadas was wonderful.
Best part of our vacation! Shir welcomes you into her beautiful home and really gives you an authentic experience into the Argentinian culture.
We had a fantastic time with Shir. It was great to meet and get to know her, and we learned so much not just about cooking but Argentinean culture and lifestyle as well. I liked that we had a small group and got to meet and have great conversation with interesting folks from around the world. The cooking was fun, accessible and empanadas came out delicious. Shir created a cute recipe booklet and we will definitely try them all at home. Highly recommend this experience!
This experience was SO FUN! Shir was so full of knowledge about the local culture and history. She made making empanadas so easy and fun. She was well prepared, clean, and organized. It was completely worth doing and my three friends and I had an absolute blast. On top of all that… the empanadas were so DELICIOUS! Highly recommend!!
Shirly was an amazing host and taught us many things about the Argentine culture. 😊 The highlight was learning to make empanadas, however the class also came with matte, picada, wine, and flan and dulce de leche. Along with serving each portion, she described the history and how each piece was important to Argentina. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Argentina for the first time to do this class! Shirly is great and made us feel like we were at home! Thank you very much Shirly!
This was a wonderful experience for my wife and me. The hostess [Shir] was warm, engaging and funny. She explained what we were going to do and gave us a good background of the importance of the empanada to Argentinian culture. Shir started us off with some Maté and also gave us some background to the drink and how COVID changed the social nature of the drink. Shir made sure this was a ‘hands on’ experience and made sure we all participated in making the Maté and empanada’s. Our cooking experience with Shir was a high-light of our trip to BA and we would highly recommend this experience to others. Shir helped to make this a very memorable and enjoyable activity. We would repeat this experience again if we come back to BA.
My favourite empanadas are the carne cortada a cuchillo! That’s exactly what we learnt to make. I was so excited. Our host was fantastic and kept no secrets to making great empanadas unshared. I can cook, but still learnt some amazing techniques. Just in general conversation, I really enjoyed our time together. I definitely recommend this activity and might even do it myself again.
Shir shared so much knowledge and information about many different types of Argentinian food including Empanadas, Alfajors & Mate; she was very clear and calm when helping both experienced and inexperienced participants in her kitchen and her English was perfect. The whole group (three of us) shared each part of the chopping, preparation, pastry prep and cooking which felt really homely and she got an extra something special as one of the group was celebrating a birthday. Perfect.
This class was amazing! The host graciously opened her home to take time and teach us about the culture of mate, alfajores and making empanadas. She is very patient and makes the class interesting with easy to follow steps after modeling the correct size of our cuts for the filling. Each piece of the experience was timed to perfection with time to chat and get to know each other. I highly recommend this class!
This was such an awesome experience. We actually were able to go to the home of the teacher. The house was very clean and she was very knowledgeable not only about making empanadas but she taught us a lot about the culture of Argentina as well as she served as mate and other traditional Argentinian snacks. After we made the empanadas she served us a really great dessert that is very traditional to Argentina as well. I would rate this experience a 10 out of 10 I will Definitely recommend this experience to my friends and to anybody who would be visiting Argentina. In addition to her knowledge Shirley was just so nice and inviting.
I visited Shir’s home on Thursday for the empanada class and absolutely loved it! Shir was so welcoming and gave a detailed class on Argentinian food and culture. The food was delicious and I’m excited to go home and make some more. Thank you for having me Shir! I couldn’t recommend this highly enough!
Thank you Shir for an absolutely wonderful class of home made empanadas and Argentinian bread. Thank you for accommodating us last minute and preparing a brilliant, informative and fun lesson! I feel grateful to have met you and would love to do more classes with you!
