It was an absolutely great, beautiful stunning town just keep in mind right in front of 1000 restaurant. You can take a bus and that takes you aroundthe whole island for free. The people were extremely helpful.

We enjoyed the city. I wish we would have booked an overnight stay. There’s lots to see
Colonia is a wonderful day trip from Buenos Aires - immigration is relatively quick on both sides and the ferry is a wonderful outing. Walking tour guide was informative and even funny at moments. And what a beautiful quaint town with so many food and souvenir joints. Highly recommended.
A very well organised trip that fit our needs perfectly. Hotel pick up and drop off took the stress out of navigating additional transport. The walking tour with Lourdes was very interesting with fantastic insights and tips for our self exploration of Colonia del Sacramento. Thoroughly enjoyed our day trip from Buenos Aires. An extra shoutout for our pickup driver as our ferry was delayed getting back in.
Although Viator did their part well, the ferry departed 2 hours late due to mechanical issues. The passport and immigration check is slow upon arrival in Uruguay. By the time we met up with our tour guide and finished lunch it was 4pm, and we were supposed to board again at 5. To me the process is too long. Luckily, we got an extension for the last ferry back but would have to take a taxi back to our hotel. There is not much to see in Colonia, although the people are lovely.
the tour was not quite what I was expecting. Paid alot of money for very little service. I would not recommend this tour or do it again. When you pay over $200.00 for tour there should be more service.
A perfect way to spend the last day in Buenos Aires. A very nice ferry ride to Uruguay followed by a quick walk along the old town. The ferry ride back was right at sunset which topped off the perfect end of the day.
Colonia del Sacramento is beautiful and well worth a visit - I’d have stayed there in fact but a day trip is great if you are short of time. The tour company were very communicative and drivers were punctual and friendly.
A good way to fill in a day with the ferry to and from Colonia de Sacramento. The walking tour was short, so gave you ample of time to explore on your own, also have lunch at one of the many eateries, and some shopping. With the return ferry leaving at 5pm we got to enjoy a magnificent sunset. .
This is a well-organized trip that allows a Buenos Aires traveler to add a day trip to another country. The service and communication was perfect. Our driver was on-time for both pick ups. The ferry is comfortable and the walking tour in Colonia is fine. Here is where I will add “but”…. Customs and Security take hours from your day. It is remarkably congested. This trip is only for die-hard travelers like me who want to say they’ve been to Uruguay. It is not an in-depth experience.
Lovely day trip. Needed another 6 hours to visit the nooks and crannies. Immigration and baggage scanners take up most valuable time. Otherwise enjoyed the day
I paid almost 400$for 2 person for this tour but tour guid was just one hour with us and they chenge my retern at last minutes and said back to the port at 3 pm .It,s mean just 2 hours for visit city and get lunch and back to port.So I cheged my retern ticket to 8,30 with tour guid help. But when I cald tour oprator for let him know and get ride,he yeling and screamed on me and said why you chenged your retern. But driver was nice and I caled her directly and she came picked us on time.
From pick up to drop off, everything went just as smoothly as it could be. Had a fantastic day thank you.
Colonia is a pretty town to visit, with lots of history and great restaurants & boutique shops. It did take us about 3hrs to get there from the hotel as you have to arrive an hr before ferry check in and go through customs, so total of 6hrs travelling for 4hrs sightseeing, but it was worth it.
Awesome experience, well guided, but allowed time on own. Restaurant meal and service was amazing. Quaint town that we enjoyed. We with the time to get there!
Very poor. Pick up & drop off were fine, but Colonia Express 1 hour tour was not great. We felt that for $195 each, we grossly overpaid.
It was a nice trip to Uruguay, my driver picked me up from my hotel she was early and very pushy, I tried to tell her how I felt about it and she just said she doesn't know English. It took a while to board, arrived about 2 hours later. The directions weren't very clear on where wr meet out guide but we found Lourdes, she gave us an hour and a half tour. We we're given like 4 hours to shop and eat. The food was delicious, I walked around and grabbed som Gelato and bought souvenirs for my friemds and family. You can pay in US dollars, and after you arrive theres an Atm. I'm glad I wemt. My vacation was over 3 weeks and I got to see 6 countries, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. It was an amazing trip I got to see all of the capitals.
Lovely day trip from Buenos Aires. Expect a hectic, chaotic experience at the Buenos Aires terminal (leaving Argentina and then entering Uruguay at a slightly different station), but all seemed to work it's self out. The walking tour was very gentle. Colonia del Sacremento was beautiful, and so quiet after BA. Return trip to BA not quite as chaotic. The ferry was full in both directions, so if you are thinking of doing this...pre book.
A highly recommended activity when in Buenos Aires- take this tour of Uruguay’s Colonia de Sacramento. Enjoy the breeze from the Rio de Plata, the food and wine in Colonia!
The one-hour walking tour was short but informative. It was a hot day, but I still had about 2.5 hours afterward to explore the town on my own. A very charming heritage spot and well worth the visit. Tip: go early, bring hat/ water and wear comfortable shoes.
Great tour. From start to finish this was great. We were picked up at our hotel. Dropped at train station. The station and ferry are clean and accommodating. The tour was only about an hour and we had plenty of free time to explore the city. Try some empanadas and steak.
It was a good experience. Although you have to be prepared to expend at least 2 hours per via to clear migration. That was only the bad note. The tour guide was really a plus for our short visit.
Very informative tour in English introducing us to both Uruguay and Colonia del Sacramento. Great way to get oriented to the old town before wandering on my own. Fernando was an excellent guide.
We were unable to go to a previous injury that was exacerbated by a fall the day before. We contacted the company who suddenly said there was no refunds. I’m OK with no refunds, but you need to tell a customer if there are any restrictions on the tickets before you sell them those tickets. So now I am having to dispute it with the very unhelpful owner. Had we known there were restrictions we would not have purchased because we have been dealing with a sprained ankle. We didn’t know it would be hurt again. Either way there is nothing on the ticket or receipt and nothing we were told about no refunds. Shame on this company. He told he no refunds were possible and then offered one and told me to go without my wife. If you can refund one you can refund two.
Great way to learn about the history and traditions of Colonia del Sacramento and stroll around the town especially if you have only 1 day to visit the town . Lourdes is knowledge at answered our questions with confidence due to her sufficient experience.
Only about 3 hours from Buenos Aires by ferry, quaint Colonia is marked by cobbled stone streets with Spanish and Portugese structures side by side, lined by beautiful Ceibo, bougainvellea and subtropical climbers. Lots of great restaurants, one with a live band setting the celebratory mood of being in a new country, curio shops, the Lighthouse, portugese fortification wall, .....a truly charming place, hype and modern but still retaining the Unesco heritage feel to it. Bring a raincoat....it poured in November.
It is over priced and the tour was pretty short. The journey was uneventful as I sat in the ferry for 90 minutes each way to Colonia and back only to look at an old Portuguese wall and light tower.
We spent more times in lines and traveling back and forth than the time we had in Colonia. It was a Saturday, maybe it was busier then. We were told we needed to be back at the boat 2 hours before our departure to make sure we got on!
Had an amazing day wandering around Colonia. Our guide had a great amount of knowledge and was very passionate about her home town. Was a great way to spend an extra day on my vacation. The communication on this trip was amazing. Very detailed and kept us informed throughout the entire process. We had a great driver as well, very helpful and was punctual which was greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend this tour.
Really pretty and interesting city. You can see how the city switched between the Portuguese and the Spanish styles over and over, sometimes in one building or one road. Great photo ops. What was hard was going through immigration, customs, and security twice. It was Extremely slow, crowded, and exhausting..
The tour was well organized and the pickup and dropoff driver on the Buenos Aires side was punctual and reliable. Boat ride was smooth. The Colonia side was quite beautiful but the guided tour was only an hour long and it wasn't clear what to do after. Ended up having lunch and wandering around but it wasn't super interesting. Still recommend it if you want to check a country off your list.
The route was good. The dialog was not synced with the stops. The headset did not work all the time.
Definitely recommend visiting this beautiful town. Our tour operator was excellent! We got regular communication and very clear instructions on how to get through customs at the ferry. Transport was arranged and timely. Lovely experience and delicious local food. Totally worthwhile!
We had an amazing time, our guide was extremely knowledgeable not only about the city but also about how Uruguay compares to other countries. She gave an amazing tour and we were able to wander and try local cuisine and see some sights on our own before returning to the ferry. Our driver in Buenos Aires was also joy to ride with, he was very personable and extremely friendly and helpful with every step getting to and on the ferry and promptly returning us to our hotel at the end of the day.
Other reviewers say you can do this trip on your own and they are correct but Viator was very efficient in delivering us and picking us up at the port. Providing us with a valid ticket as well as a guide at Colonia. Unless you are serious about this trip take note that you spend a lot of time clearing customs on both sides because you are leaving and entering two countries. Personally I really like the atmosphere of Colonia and like anyplace the more time spent exploring the more you discover. For example we spent some time finding a restaurant the guide recommended called Charco and got to see the river side as a result.
A lot of time on the ferry or in the ferry line for a short guided walk. Guide was good, but we had more time to hanf out with little to explore.
Such a lovely tour and great city. Good organisation from tour company. You are only part of a tour for the walking trip in Uruguay, the rest of the trip is separate
You are picked up at your hotel, dropped at the ferry (don’t forget your passport). The ride is 1 1/2 hours each way. You are met at the other side by a tour guide, who takes you thru the city for about an hour. You then have free time to explore Colonia del Sacramento. Make sure you return to the terminal 1 hour before departure. When you return to Buenos Aires, a driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel. Our tour guide in Uruguay, Lourdes, was very informative and helpful and knew a lot about the history of the city. It was a fun day.
A great town in Uruguay with lots of character. Options to rent a golf cart or car to further explore if wanted. The downtown and historic area are small but lots of shops and restaurants. Recommend climbing the lighthouse for the views. Excellent way to escape the hustle of the big city for a day.
This tour cost $45usd more than had I booked independently through the ferry websites. It was worth every penny! My driver picked me up 5 minutes early, and was waiting for me in the freezing cold when the return boat was 15 minutes late! Yes, customs is a process. Be sure to have your passport, tickets, and address of your hotel in Buenos Aires. The English-speaking tour guide was informative in explaining the processes of the day. She also explained the history of Colonia during our 50 minute walk. There were 5 people in our group. She was more informative than any Google search I would perform. The 4 hours of free time was enough to walk around the main area of the old town. I visited the Origami Museum, stood on the beach near the Batista, saw the few major attractions, and visited the church. Yes, another hour or two would have enriched my day, but the ferries make the schedule. Since it was winter, sunset occurred during our return to BA, making a beautiful end to the day!
Breathtakingly overpriced! We got transport to and from the ferry terminal, ferry tickets and a pleasant walking-tour guide in Colonia. By my calculation, all together these would have cost about half of what Viator charged. Apparently, having an experience without any hitches is priceless.
You can do it yourself but was good to have someone explain the history of the area. Walking tour lasts around 30-60 minutes and rest of day is your own. Just make sure you're back in time for ferry to BA.
Good communication and organization. Driver Nina was prompt. The written explanation of steps to follow was helpful. Guide in colonia was friendly and knowledgeable. Free time there was fun. And return voyage was easy and uneventful. Be aware you are traveling between countries so there are lines both going and coming back for customs, immigration (both countries) and boarding process for the ferry. But for me it was an easy and fairly inexpensive way to add another country to my list, and colonia was a delightful town to spend an afternoon in. I traveled solo and felt very safe. Most places accepted usd but change was only in Uruguay pesos, so take smaller us bills or change money in the ferry terminal. There’s an exchange there. There was a fee to use credit cards.
This tour is disappointing. It is nothibg but just a ferry ride and a two hours walking tour of the city centre. This is easily achieveable by just buying a ferry ticket and walk to the city by oneself. A waste of money. Dont consider this a tour at all. I actually say the ticket booth at a shopping centre selling ticket for the same tour for $90. Very DISAPPOINTED !!!!
The overall experience was very good. The ferry (over which you have little, if any control) was less than ideal. The ferry was delayed on both ends of the trip.
It was very convenient to have the pre-arranged transportation to and from the boat to our Buenos Aires hotel. The included walking tour lasted about an hour and was interesting and informative. The remaining three hours weren't quite enough for all we'd have liked to have done, but a pleasant lunch on the square, accompanied by Uruguayan tannat wine was delightful. It would have been helpful to add to the posted information that a drivers license (not just passport) is mandatory to rent a golf cart, which we were disappointed not to be able to do. Shopping at the Made In Uruguay store was fun. This was a very nice day trip.
Everything went very smoothly. The only complaint is the time it takes to get through immigration and getting there which is out of their control. The tour itself was great and well worth the effort!
The driver and guide for the walking tour were excellent, courteous, and in all ways fine. They were not the problem. However, the trip to Colonia involves a lot of waiting in long lines in packed rooms for tedious immigration procedures each way, than a long wait for the ferry each way, then a longish ferry ride. When you finally get to Colonia, there is really not much there. The only tour available is a group tour, which had too many people in it. And there just is very little to see. All in all, it is a lot of waiting for hours in unpleasant circumstances for very little payoff. Our limited time in Buenos Aires could have been much better spent.
A nice trip to the medevial colonial city of Colonia after the ferry transportation to the city, a short but enjoyable city tour. After that we had time for lunch, buy souvenirs at the old city, take an icecream and relax under the shadow of the trees.
Very efficient and the your guide was a great resource. No problems with visas or passport. Drivers were great
