This was a lovely small-group tour to Paty, and the wine was amazing! I loved seeing the tiny old wine cellars and hearing about the history of them.

Itinerary
We will visit an extraordinary and magical wine cellar village where you can see 250 wine cellars. These cellars were built 180-220 years ago. The location is only 20 minutes drive from Budapest. These wine cellars are really magical indeed. They look like the hobbit's burrows from the Shire from the Lord of the Rings movie.

This was truly a different type of wine tasting experience. You cannot visit these cellars on your own so if you are a wine lover, you definitely need to book this tour. My husband and I were one of two couples on the tour with Miki, a very knowledgeable wine judge and journalist. Hungarian wines are not commonly found outside of Hungary so you most likely have not tasted the wines presented on this tour. The scenery is beautiful and just an absolute must for those that like to indulge in exceptional wines. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!
Miki (Mickey) picked us up in the city and drove us out to the countryside where the famous wine cellars are. It’s a beautiful setting. We got a tour of a couple of the cellars. There are over 250 of them. Miki writes articles for a wine publication and owns a wine bar so he is very passionate about wine. We tasted 7 wines and talked about about each one. He had a nice meat and cheese tray for a snack that was good. The tour was worth the price just to go see the wine cellars. There’s nothing like them.
Unique experience, great host (Micky), amazing location and the wine and food was lovely. Highly recommend. You don't have to know wine to enjoy.
This wine tour/tasting was a highlight of our Central European vacation. Our tour was a mix of 3 couples. Meet up location was easy to find. The half hour ride to the "Hobbit Houses" was very comfortable in Miki's mini van. We got lots of information about Hungarian wines and Hungarian wine making on the ride. It was a beautiful day and after touring one of the wine caves we sat outside at a picnic table and tasted some wonderful wines. A little further down the road was our next stop. This time meat, cheeses, and bread (GF if you let him know when reserving) to go with more great wine. You do have a chance to purchase all the wines you taste. I would not hesitate to take this trip; book direct!
This countryside wine tour is a must for anyone visiting Budapest! Mickey was great and so knowledgeable! The places he takes you are amazing! Pictures don’t tell the whole story! And oh…the wines are pretty darn good also! This is a must do!
Great wine tour. Unique experience visiting individual wine cellars built into the hillside and dating back to the 1800’s. Tasted many Hungarian wines - white, rose and reds - fresh from the cellar and even one from the barrel. Miki is passionate about wine and shares his vast knowledge on this tour. Don’t miss it!
A truly memorable experience! Mikki was very knowledgeable and extremely personable. The cellars in Paty are truly unique, resembling hobbit houses, and the tastings were very good. Only 25-30 mins from Budapest and yet a world apart.
Wine tour and experience was amazing. Miki was very knowledgeable and informative. Experience would have been even better if he used a microphone in the transit van as it was difficult to hear commentary in the back seats.
My time with Micki was amazing! I was the only person on this experience but he was so accommodating and answered all my questions and I learned so many wonderful things about Hungarian wine. The short ride to the "hobbit wine cellars" was quick and I really enjoyed this entire experience. Micki is really knowledgable and friendly. I highly recommend this tour!
A wonderful adventure for tasting wines in the country side. Miki, was a very knowledgeable and personable guide. We were brought to a community of wine cellars that truly looked like hobbit houses set into the hillsides. We tasted from two cellars, learned much about Hungarian wine making, and enjoyed some exquisite wines. I highly recommend this tour!
A really enjoyable glimpse into Hungarian wines. Miki was passionate and knowledgeable about wines but also fun to keep the experience relaxed. We sat amongst the cellars of Páty, under the shade of the trees and Miki showcased a variety of Hungarian wines with cheese, breads and salamis. Can thoroughly recommend.
Mickey was a great guide. He is very knowledgeable about wine. The wine cellars were very cool. There were only 3 of us on the tour and our tour was the only group there. It was interesting to learn about the cellars and Hungarian wine making. We really enjoyed it. We ended at Mickey’s wine bar which was also nice but it was far from the pickup spot so we had to use a Bolt to get back.
This was an amazing adventure. Miki, our guide was outstanding. His knowledge and passion for wine was contagious. He shared was us a very special place that felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The history of this winemakers community and the wines were fascinating. I high recommend (5+ stars) spending some time with Miki as he takes you on this unique experience.
Miklos was amazing and highlight of our holiday. After 5 hours together I consider him to be a friend. I learnt so much today and enjoyed every moment.
Very nice presentation and knowledge of Hungarian wine. Very enjoyable. Nice ride into the country side.
A very pleasant trip, our guide Miki was very friendly & knowledgeable. We went to two wine cellars in a very unique setting that looked like hobbit houses. It wasn’t like any wine trip I’d done before I would definitely recommend it.
This wine tasting was the most unique wine tastings I’ve ever experienced, and in a very good way. Mickey was amazing. He was so informative and extremely knowledgeable. I’ve already recommended this tour to a friend who will be visiting Budapest in August.
Miklós (Miki) Csizmadia transforms your experience to a marvelous adventure. Transported in a new luxurious van in minutes to the hidden unknown historic gem, Páty'. Literally hundreds of charming unique hobbit house cellars. This tranquil paradise is devoid of commercial tourism. Mere minutes from downtown you couumune with nature unlikely to encounter another vehicle or person. Unlocking these bespoke cellar skeleton key doors you discover wine perfected in time honored traditions. Limited production equate to most offerings only available here. Under the shade of majestic oaks and chirpping birds, we sample Bridget Bernard's distinctive approachable offerings including a not to miss rose along with local varietal whites and reds. Yet this was only the start. Miki not only educated, but patiently addressed questions mentoring our journey through Hungary's 21 +1 wine regions. We then migrated to another friend's cellar just a short stroll away. Here we are introduced to yet another renowned female winemaker, Éva Dignisz Gál's exceptional offerings that compete with the best of the best. Cserszegi Fűszeres evokes crisp bright cheer and this winemaker of the year anoited Queen of Rosé, Szigetcsép Rosé did not disappoint. Our tastings were accompanied with a curated selection of indigenous Mangalica sausages and an addictive spread, fromage and fresh bread. Onwards to Pastor Garage's bold premium balanced structured reds, then Narancsbor Orange (amber colored) sensory delights and finally the pièce de résistance, rare aged Tokaji whose magical medicinal qualities may be credited with royal centenarian's longevity. Bring family, friends and make more friends and best yet you can continue your exploration at local district IX Wine the Gap. All expectations exceeded.
Wonderful, more than expected. Very informative, relaxed and learned so much. Hungarian wine is superb, a best kept secret though Im sure the secret should be exposed.
Very informative. Great wines. Absolutely recommend! Progression of wines with explanations about wine growing in the area.
This is a fantastic wine tour. Miki has been working in the wine industry for 25 years. He taught us a lot about Hungarian wine. All of the pours were enjoyable and some were exquisite The setting in the land of tiny wine cellars could not have been more delightful This tour has my highest recommendation
If you are at all interested in wine or the stories and history around it then you will thoroughly enjoy this. Miki was brilliant and entertaining, the wine delightful.
This experience is not to be missed if you enjoy wine and are looking for a break from the city. Mickey is a wine enthusiast and has close connections with the winemakers in Hungary. His knowledge and passion for Hungarian wines was evident in each of the tastings he guided us through. The village is reminiscent of the Shire in Lord of the Rings and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The wines were excellent and Mickey provided some tasty Tapas to enjoy with our wine. Overall a great experience and one of the highlights of our trip!
An absolutely unique winery experience! Miki, or guide was so engaging. Sharing his love for wine and for this magical wine village that can only be described like a hobbit village😍 Loved every minute. Thankyou ❤️
A personal look into wine making in Hungary. Tour guide had access to couple of cellars with wine tasting in each. Wine selections were varied and came with history. Very enjoyable tour and only a short ride from Budapest.
Miki our wine enthusiast guide was simply Amazing! We have done many wine tours and this tour in Paty by far was the best! Miki is so knowledgeable and made the tour fun. It was an intimate 6 people with a young couple from Finland getting engaged at the end of our tour!! Take this wine tour-you won’t regret it!
Great wine and equally great food (especially the mangalicia). Excellent hosting and information about Hungarian wine from Miki. An excellent way to spend half a day close to Budapest.
this was an amazing experience! to believe that there is such a cool little town so close to budapest is crazy! miky was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide, providing great detail about the wine and some history of budapest and hungary! plus - definitely give his shop a try in the city
Mickey, the host was great! Learned much! My wife (xx) and I (xy) learned much that we will never forget. This trip is a must!
Miki was an extremely knowledgeable guide regarding the wine regions of Hungary. He took us to an other worldly place in the Hungarian countryside to have us experience the wines of Hungary and where they are created. This is a MUST see for any wine enthusiast as I have never experienced such a wine production area in any of the dozens of wine regions I have experienced around the world. Miki is the person to show you this given his knowledge and connections in the wine industry of Hungary. Don’t miss this tour!
Really individual. Our guide Miki was knowledgeable and informative with interesting anecdotes which made a fun and relaxing trip.
A very unique experience. We’ve done quite a few wine tastings over the years but. Ever anything as quaint as this. Quite a beautiful place.
We had such a wonderful time at this countryside wine tasting experience! Miki was an incredible host—super knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about wine. He made everything approachable and fun while still teaching us so much along the way. And honestly… we couldn’t help ourselves: “Oh Miki, you’re so fine, you’re so fine, you know your wine—hey Miki!” 🍷 Highly recommend
This experience was the best. Definitely unlike any other wine tour we have done before. This area with its 200+ wine cellars is magical. Miki is a great host. To say is very knowledgeable about wine is an understatement. He also keeps the groups small which allows for a much more intimate experience. For our trip it was just my group of 4. It was the best!
Enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable giude , Miki made the tour most memorable for us . Even if you are not that into wine ( I am) he shared his passion for Hungarian wines and and engaged the other guests to share his joy for these special wines .Bravo!
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Hungarian wine and see the countryside. I'm so glad I booked this! Miki is so passionate about wine and shares his knowledge. The area of Paty is charming. It's close enough to Budapest that it doesn't take a lot of time to get there, but yet feels worlds a way. It was a true joy to be able to sample wines in the little wine cellars and talk to Mike about wine. Highly recommend this!
We have been in Budapest five times over last 10 years and had 2-3 wine tours each time. Miki is the most knowledgable wine guide we have ever had. He took our group to two unbelievable wineries definitely off the beaten path. Over 200 family owned wineries built into 1830 hillsides. Award winning rose’s and other Hungarian reds and shites
Unique and charming wine tasting made even more magical by a light dusting of snow the day prior to our tour. Felt like stepping back in time. The tour guide was very knowledgeable with a good sense of humour and the wine was amazing! Definitely recommend.
We were a group of 8 friends who had a couple days in Budapest before the start of our Viking Danube cruise. This fit our schedule and sounded fun. Boy, did we hit the jackpot. First, the wine cellars. OMG, who knew? We had no idea this place or anything like it existed. These very historic, family owned burrows hidden in the countryside. Amazing! Second, our guide Micki. He was so knowledgeable, interesting and passionate about it. We learned so much about wine making in Hungary and in general. Third, the wines. A lovely selection that really highlighted their differences. Fourth, the snack. We had already fallen in love with Hungarian bread and this was no exception. With the specialty lard spread that made it extra special. Of all the tours we took this trip both through Viking and others, this was the best!!
That it was fabulous, Miki was great and very accommodating. He changed our pick up place for us and dropped us off at the pier after the tour since we were going onto a Viking cruise. I would totally recommend this wine tour
Had a very good wine trip with Miki. Miki was such a nice guy and full of information on Hungarian wines. It was great to get into the Hungarian countryside to try local wines and learn the history. The tasting came with bread, cheeses and charcuterie. This complimented the tasting well. If you like wine I would recommend this experience.
Mickey is extremely knowledgeable about wines. He is very personable and had lots of stories. It was a super fun experience and would recommend it to anyone interested in wine.
What a fabulous excursion! Miki was very informative, friendly and entertaining. We learned so much about Hungarian wine and culture- we would throughly recommend a trip out to Paty 🤩
This was a wonderful experience and day! Micki is a delight and knows everything there is to know about Hungarian wine! Getting out of the hustle and bustle of Budapest and finding myself in a truly remote and mystical part of the world trying wines and authentic Hungarian snacks was purely magical!! Would highly recommend this 🍷
Miki is a very special guy, wine journalist and entrepreneur. He communicated with us weeks prior to our tour; provided gluten free bread and took us on an unforgettable wine journey to the wine village of Páty. We learned and tasted the incredible wines of Hungary, that are much more than tokaji. He introduced us to Bridget Bernard a local winemaker continuing her family’s tradition of growing and making wine. We were also lucky enough to visit his wine bar, “Wine the Gap”. While in Budapest if you don’t have time for a tour definitely stop by and see Miki. He started as a guide and ended up being a friend!
Overall a fantastic experience, Miki our very experienced wine educator drove us out to small wine cellars about 40 mins from the center of Budapest. We dropped down into a lower level and drive along small country roads to our stop, a beautiful area lined with small family wine cellars, we stopped at two enjoying a selection of Whites, Rose and Reds, the second coming with some cheeses, bread and meats. The group size was small eight people from around the world and Miki, had us very focused as he went through the wines and the regions plus the history of Hungarian wine.
What an awesome tour! It's so worth the money. Miki was fabulous. He has a vast knowledge of wine and was very interesting to talk to. The fact that we were the only ones on the tour made it feel extra special and unique. The ambiance was so peaceful and welcoming. The number of snacks and wine was bountiful; everything was fresh and tasty. The pours were generous. This tour was the highlight of our Budapest experience. Take advantage of this exclusive tour. Wonderful drive out to the country side village of Paty. Miki was very informative about Hungary, wine and lot more. At the winery that was first established in 1856 we tasted quite a few different wines and even some from the barrel. The cheese, breads, olives and even an amazing home made dessert that the winery owners mother prepared for us. The weather was great, we sat out on a picknick bench. We got an amazing education from Miki and highly recommend his tour. His englsh was prefect
Meeting the winemaker and her mother was fabulous. Also, tasting homemade foods, including dessert, was amazing. Wine was good too, and Mickie clearly knows wine and imparts his enthusiasm along with his knowledge. Learned a lit.
