Itinerary
Szentendre is a historic town with cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and a lively art scene. Settled by various peoples over the centuries, it became an important center for Serbian refugees in the 17th century, who left behind a distinctive Orthodox heritage. Today, its museums, galleries, and Danube River promenade make it a favorite destination for visitors interested in culture and history.
Visegrád Castle in Hungary is a history buff's/nature lover's dream. Combining an impressive 13th-century citadel with stunning Danube views, this stop is a great opportunity to explore Hungary's royal past and take amazing photos of the Danube Bend. You can even see a wax figure exhibit of the famous 1335 meeting of three kings. (Please note that between January 12 - February 28, the castle is only open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays.)
Towering over Esztergom, Hungary, the Esztergom Basilica is a sight to behold. As the largest church in the country, it boasts a grand neoclassical design, a massive dome visible for kilometers, and a rich history. Built on the site of earlier churches dating back to King Stephen I, it's the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary and offers stunning views and a deep connection to Hungarian history. Esztergom Castle, next to the basilica, was the royal residence and the political and religious center of Hungary from the reign of Saint Stephen until the mid-13th century.
From Esztergom, we will briefly cross into Slovakia for postcard-perfect views of the basilica and the city’s old town.
For those interested, Szentendre’s Marzipan Museum showcases the artistry of this sweet craft, with life-size sculptures of Lady Diana, Michael Jackson, and many other figures from history, cartoons, and nature. Watch master confectioners at work as they shape sweets into edible art, making the visit both fun and educational - and of course tasty.
Visegrad has a hidden gem: the Pilis Biosphere Reserve, a national park within the national park. It is a picturesque region characterized by its unique vegetation, meandering creeks, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes teeming with trout. You can enjoy the unique experience of tasting freshly prepared trout, caught straight from these lakes, or game from the surrounding forests, at a cozy forest restaurant nestled among the trees (outside the summer months, the restaurant is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with other great options nearby).

Tamas is a fantastic guide. Extremely knowledgeable and very personable. Our full day tour was worth it to see some of the spectacular sites just outside of Budapest. Snacks and beverages were offered and our lunch was at our own leisure. Highly recommend!
This was our first trip to Hungary and we wanted to make sure we saw sights outside of Budapest itself (which is a beautiful city). Tamas came highly recommended and fully lived up to his accolades. The weather was perfect and Tamas arranged a fabulous day trip for us. Each of the 3 locations provided a different piece of Hungarian history and Tamas was extremely knowledgeable and informative about Hungary's history. He gave us wonderful insight from ancient days right through the present. The Danube Bend area is gorgeous. Between the sweeping views offered from Visegrad castle, to the majesty of the Estergom Basilica, to the artistic vibe of Szentendre, Tamas showed us the best the area has to offer. He even led us to a fabulous lagos stand for a wonderful quick lunch. This day trip was the highlight of our vacation. We can enthusiastically recommend this trip with Tamas. He came completely prepared with all the snacks and drinks we could want to add the final touch to a fantastic day. Thank you Tamas for everything. We not only got to see great beauty and learn much more about Hungary, but also left feeling We had made a friend.
We had a great day with Tomas. He gave us a thorough history of Hungary which was very interesting and informative. He was a great guide and was able to answer all our questions. He gave us time on our own in Szentendre which is a cute little town. He had lots of drinks and snacks in case we got hungry before lunch. It was a wonderful tour 🤗🤗
Our day trip with Tamas was a wonderful experience. He picked us up at our hotel (with snacks & drinks) at 9:00 and dropped us off at 6:00 pm. He made sure to let us know what we were seeing and shared so much information with us. If we return to Budapest, we will definitely book another tour with Tamas!
Tamas was a wonderful tour guide. He seemingly has an endless supply of knowledge regarding Hungary. My wife and I enjoy history, and he was very patient with our unceasing questions. He also ensures that we will not be hungry or thirsty. He has quite a store of snacks and refrigerated drinks (as well as tea and coffee) available in the trunk. We would highly recommend him.
First time in Budapest and my friend and I booked a full day tour with Tamas. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and history. He picked us up at our AirBnB, and we had a jam packed day outside the city limits. He explained sites and building as we passed. Very kind and considerate. We even got treats of old time Hungarian candies! I highly recommend Tamas and his tours.
We booked our Danube bend day trip from Budapest with Tamas during the historical heat wave, with temperatures over 100 degrees F. Despite the heat, tamas picked us up from our hotel and gave us a wonderful day trip, with a slower pace. He was very patient with my 3 yr old toddler (and even bought a new car seat to accommodate her age and size) and grandparents we were traveling with. At the end of the day, my daughter was commenting how nice and kind he was. He provided us with great local snacks and drinks all day (kept ice cold in his fridge cooler). He always made sure to start the car ac ahead of time to keep us comfortable. He explained so much Hungarian history because we were interested and toured us around the sites so we could do the highlights efficiently. We got to see so much in a day and he never made us feel rushed at all. We loved his story telling and his kindness. The price seemed steep but in the end I’m glad we felt we got our money’s worth even during the heat wave.
It was wonderful! The knowledge Tamas had on the history was amazing. We were so lucky to have him to ourselves. I would encourage anyone to do a tour with him. Well worth it!
Nothing short of spectacular. Must not miss this tour. Tamas is so knowledgeable and is a master at tying history to everything on the tour. What a wonderful day! Tamas was amazing, I can’t say it enough. He is a safe driver and incredibly friendly and respectful. He can tailor anything to any audience. His vehicle was clean and the snacks and drinks provided hit the spot! Thanks Tamas. Looking forward to another tour in the future!
This was nothing short of spectacular. Highly recommend. Tamas does an excellent job timing the day and tying his vast knowledge of history to the different spots on the tour. He was very friendly, safe driver. Snacks and drinks great too and definitely a plus!
Tamas, our guide was very kind he brought snacks and beverages we never got hungry. He even allowed us to take photos in a sunflower field which is not part of the tour😅The tour went smoothly and we covered every key point in the tour. Tamas was like my history teacher, important eras in Europe history from Atilla Hun to the Romans, kings and queens, betrayals, buried treasures, Dracula and whatnot were discussed Tamas was talking the whole day!😅 This is a “must do” when in Budapest, seeing the scenic Danube and walking thru it’s beautiful and historic streets and old town squares.
Such a wonderful experience traveling the Danube Bend with Tamás!! He was so hospitable, with lots of beverages and snacks for the road, and the ride was super comfortable. More importantly, Tamás was a WEALTH of knowledge on Hungarian history and we had a great time seeing it come alive in the different locations we went to along the Bend. He had great recommendations for our lunch spot and activities, making sure we maximized our tour time. We HIGHLY recommend doing a tour with Tamás, and wish we had had the opportunity to join him on some of his others!! One of the highlights of our trip for sure!

Tamas was our tour guide. He is very knowledgeable about the country’s history and told us a lot during the tour. He was very friendly and offered us choices during the tour according to our interest and time schedule. The 3 cities visited during the tour had important history in the country and views were great too. Overall, we had great time in the private tour.
Thomas was amazing! Incredibly kind, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, prompt, and his English was great. He made sure we saw different things throughout the tour and not taking the same road back so we got city, towns, and mountains. Would absolutely book this tour and with him again!
We had an amazing day trip with Tamas in Hungary and couldn’t have asked for a better guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about sharing the history, culture, and hidden gems of the country. From the moment the tour started, he made us feel welcome and ensured everyone was comfortable and engaged. Tamas has a great way of bringing places to life with interesting stories and local insights that you wouldn’t get on your own. The itinerary was well organized, the pace was perfect, and he was always happy to answer questions and offer recommendations. What really stood out was his professionalism, enthusiasm, and genuine care for making sure everyone had a memorable experience. Thanks to Tamas, our day in Hungary was one of the highlights of our trip. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for an informative, enjoyable, and unforgettable tour experience.
This was an excellent tour for people wanting to go beyond the walls of Budapest. Tamas is a very knowledgeable historian who made the history of Hungary along the Danube come alive
Tamas was fabulous!! So knowledgeable and informative about the history. He was a fantastic guide! The basilica was beautiful, as was the castle. We highly recommend this tour.
All the three places are very good & worth the visit it is almost a full day tour
The wife and I had such a great experience with Tamas today. He showed up at our hotel early for our pickup time and was waiting outside. He has sent me a message that morning so I let him know we were in the lobby about 10 mins before our scheduled pick up time and he walked right in and greeted us. He was very friendly and came prepared with drinks and snacks for the day. His van was very comfortable to ride in , and he made sure the temperature in the back was to our liking. Along our journey we opted to hear about the history of the areas we were driving through. He was very knowledgeable about historical events from early history to more modern eras. It was very apparent he has a passion for what he does. During our stops he talked about the building and ruins in the area which was great information. For lunch he recommended an excellent restaurant that was well priced and delicious.. Just as an fyi bring your passport with you for this tour as we briefly passed into Slovakia for a great vantage point. I would also recommend comfortable walking shoes. There were a handful of flights of steps but I wouldn’t say the activity level is more than moderate. My Apple Watch recorded around 10k steps, some of which were self inflicted as we spent some time going back and forth through some shops. We were dropped back off safe and sound to our hotel in the afternoon with lots of pictures and great memories. I recommend this tour and would do it all over again!
The guide is very knowledgeable in history. He is very kind person with warmest concern to us. We were treated very friendly.
Informative and entertaining. Tamas was an outstanding guide. Highly recommend.
My Mom and I loved this tour! Tamas has an extremely deep knowledge of Hungarian history, is a wealth of information, and has a great sense of humor. During the drive he told us Hungary's History and even pointed out some of the Roman ruins. At each stop, his historical commentary was much appreciated, informative, enlightening, and definitely added to the overall experience. He was kind and courteous as he offered us bottles of water and snacks. Also, he was really patient and never rushed us, as my Mom and I did some shopping at a market in our free time in Szentendre. If I'm ever in the area again, I would book one of his other tours he offers. We can't recommend this tour enough.
Tamas is Mr. Historian. He added a depth to the journey that is rare. Tamas knew the best places for great pictures. Fantastic trip, we loved the day
My husband and I absolutely loved this tour! All 3 stops were different but excellent. Tamas is very knowledgeable about the history and events in Estergom and Viesgrad castle as well as Hungarian history. Gave us great commentary at all 3 stops and also let us roam a bit on our own. Tamas also gave us entertaining history lessons on the drive to first stop, was very safe and friendly guide for the day. Drinks and snacks were provided and we had options on where and when to have lunch. Overall, a great way to spend a day outside the city!
We had a great time. Tamas was our guide. One of the best guides we have had the pleasure of meeting. He was patient and flexible. Very knowledgeable and had very in-depth explanations of the history and culture of the region. Very comfortable vehicle. We were pleasantly surprised with drinks and snacks he provided. We really enjoyed his tour and the prep he puts into it. Very ffixient use of time. Highly recommend Tamas.
We had a fantastic day tour with Tamas learning and visiting the Danube Bend Area. Tamas was engaging and very knowledgeable about all areas of our tour: historical facts; topography/ecology and ethnographic details. We could not have been more pleased with what we got out of our day and the hospitality Tamas showed us. If you have a chance to tour with him, we would highly recommend it!
Our Danube Bend day tour with Tamás was an exceptional experience from start to finish. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating insights about the history of Hungary and the surrounding region as we drove through the beautiful countryside. One of the highlights was getting to try a variety of local snacks he provided along the way. Everything was absolutely delicious and added a special, authentic touch to the experience. All three stops on the tour were fantastic, each offering something unique and memorable. Tamás made the entire day enjoyable, engaging, and seamless. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore beyond Budapest and gain a deeper appreciation for Hungary!
The Danube Bend tour was truly a highlight of the trip. The experience struck a rare balance between rich historical insight and genuine enjoyment, bringing the region’s past to life in a way that felt both engaging and accessible. The tour guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, personable, and effortlessly attentive—making the day feel seamless and relaxed throughout. There was a natural flexibility to the itinerary that allowed us to explore at a comfortable pace, which only added to the overall ease and enjoyment. It was, in every sense, a memorable and thoughtfully curated experience.
Wow, this was one of the best tours we have ever been on. My family loves to travel and have done probably 6-7 similar style tours in various different countries. What stood out with this day trip was the guide. Tamas is fabulous. He was constantly asking how we were doing, he brought snacks, cold/hot drinks in the van. He is extremely knowledgeable, set a great pace for the day. He paid for our bathrooms, bought my children chocolate. We really couldn't have asked for a better day. Hi highly recommend this trip.
I spent many hours researching things to do in Budapest. I came across the private Danube bend tour with Tamas and read all of the incredible reviews. I was very excited and immediately booked the tour for myself and my husband. We had very high expectations and I’m happy to say that Tamas far exceeded them. From our 1st class van, to the delicious drinks and snacks provided through out the day, to the extensive knowledge and friendly demeanor Tamas provided, this tour absolutely can’t be missed. The Danube bend is stunning and our personalized tour with Tamas was more than we could have hoped for. I can’t recommend this enough. It’s absolutely worth every penny. We also discovered that Tamas has other tours available and are looking forward to booking one of those, as well.
Fantastic day. Tamas our guide and driver for the day was brilliant. His history on Hungary was mesmerising. Visegrad castle has lots of steps but well worth it for the views. Szentendre is a gorgeous place, with a Marzipan museum, colourful umbrellas adorn one of the streets. Esztergom Basilica is amazing Would highly recommend this tour for the history and beauty Thank you Tamas
Our tour guide, Sophia, was absolutely wonderful. She genuinely seemed to enjoy sharing Hungary with us, and her enthusiasm made the day even better. She was cheerful, informative, and gave us plenty of time at each stop without ever making us feel rushed. We loved the itinerary and all the sites we visited. It was a fantastic day overall, and we would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to explore beyond the city. The transportation was also very comfortable.
Excellent Tour Guide. Knowledgeable, great host. Adjusted tour due to weather and/ or guest requests. Highly recommend.
Tamas is amazing, and this tour is worth every penny. Each city we visited had a unique history and current interest. Tamas has so much knowledge of Hungarian history and culture that he brings these cities/experiences to life. He literally drives you to the sites, and then walks and guides you through them giving you as much information as you want, and as much (or as little) time as you would like. This trip gets you out of the big city and shows you unique and beautiful parts of Hungary you shouldn’t miss!
Tamas was a wonderful guide who gave us all interesting stories about the history of Hungary and Budapest, all while keeping the kids entertained.
Tamas is one of the best guides I have ever had. He is the most knowledgeable and well prepared guide and kept his car loaded with goodies and drinks for his guests. From the get-go, he was enthusiastically feeding me with historical information that would provide the context of our destinations. He also timed everything perfectly and will make sure you have enough time to enjoy each attraction fully. His driving was also safe and efficient, which is really important when travelling long distances. Was so impressed with him that I promptly booked another tour with him and will do so again when we are back for another holiday!
Tamas was very professional starting out with his communication with me from the time the booking was done. He arrived punctually at the time arranged, was a fount of knowledge on all the sites we visited and the history of Hungary through the medieval times down to the present He was enthusiastic, witty and patient, answering all our questions. I would love to do another tour with Tamas to a different location some other time. He definitely deserves a five star rating.
Absolutely must do....Tamas was fantastic. He is a wealth of information, makes the tour more personal and ensures you have something to drink and nibble on. He was an excellent host , friendly and mist obliging and kind. Highly recommend any tour He provides.
We highly recommend Tamas for being congenial, prepared, knowledgeable as well as speaking very clearly. We had a delightful time. In addition, he customized the itinerary to suit traffic conditions.
This was an amazing trip with Tamas and is highly recommended! My wife and I loved the trip, in particular the Visegrad Castle was amazing in how well preserved it is. Szentendre was also an artistic treat, and we were able to see the Esztergom basilica from Slovakia! If you take the tour, the restaurant in Visegrad by the river comes highly recommended by us if you like fresh trout! Highly recommended and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Hungary.
I am writing this review after I had completed a 21 day vacation in Europe. I have taken many tours during these 21 days, and the tour with Tamas was the best. Tamas provided us with an interesting day filled with historical information (as much or as little as we wanted). Tamas was also more attentive to his clients than any other tour guide we hired. He had a variety of snacks and drinks for us, which was not the case on any of our other excursions. I highly recommend Tamas as a tour guide for both his vast knowledge of history and his attention to client comfort.
Wish I could rate this a 6 on a 5 point scale because it is difficult to do justice to this wonderful tour and the consumate gentleman who operates it in a few short sentences. He reworked his schedule to accommodate a change in our itinerary AFTER booking, was prompt and courteous throughout, came prepared with snacks and drinks for the journey, and whisked us around to see four amazing sights in his clean new vehicle. During each segment of the journey he covered a portion of Hungarian history, informing us of over 1000 years of heritage without ever overwhelming us. Suffice it to say that the experience with Tamás was the best tour experience of our three week European vacation from Budapest to Amsterdam.
This was such a fantastic day! We started early & we got to see so much! Tamas our tour guide was so pleasant & sweet & extremely knowledgeable. We really enjoyed our time with him. After our first 2 stops he recommended lunch in a biosphere. It was absolutely incredible. The trout was excellent & so fresh. Our third stop was the cutest little village. We had free time to shop & enjoy. There are so many tours of the Danue, but Tamas really made our time so special. I really cant recommend this tour enough.
We had a lovely day with Tamas. He was very knowledgeable and took great care of us, with a cooler filled with cold beverages and great recommendations for where to have lunch and where to shop in Szentendre to purchase unique souvenirs. I highly recommend this tour.
What a fabulous day! Thank you Tomas for showing us such a wonderful and informative day! We all had a great time.
Tamas is an outstanding tour guide! He went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable. His deep knowledge of Hungarian history, paired with his attention to even the smallest details, made the tour both informative and engaging. His recommendation of Forest Restaurant was perfect—delicious food in a great atmosphere. Every stop on the tour was thoughtfully planned and truly memorable. A special touch was the souvenir coins engraved with ravens that he helped us get from the machines. Tamas also generously provided snacks and drinks throughout the day and gave us free time to explore on our own. I highly recommend taking this trip with Tamas—you’ll be glad you did!
Tamas was amazing. He is incredibly knowledgeable and focused on making sure we got the most of our time with him. He went above and beyond telling us the history of important events in Hungary and their relevance to the sites we visited. He was also very accommodating and made adjustments to our tour based on our preferences. We were very comfortable traveling with Tamas - he always offered us drinks and snacks during the trip.
We had a wonderful tour with Tamas, and it was a highlight of our time in Budapest. Before the tour, he responded quickly to our questions, and was very flexible in terms of our pick-up and drop-off needs. On the tour, he was charming and knowledgeable, and we really enjoyed getting to know him as well as learning about Hungarian history and culture. We would recommend this tour to all our friends visiting Budapest.
