Great experience! A little challenging at times, I.e., climbing a steep ladder, but a very unique cave experience. Our guide, Peter, was very informative.

Itinerary
Cave Walk is a relaxed way of cave-exploring even for those who suffer from claustrophobia. Budapest is the capital of caves: more than two hundred caves are known under the Buda side of the town, created by the same springs that supply the famous spas. Szemlo-hegyi Cave is the ”underground flower garden” of Budapest because of its floriform mineral concretions: cave corals, calcite plates and gypsum crystals. Spectacular chambers, vast vertical dimensions and fancy „petrified ornaments” characterize this cave. After the first part of our tour, from the top of this cave we can have a break to admire the panorama of the capital.
Palvolgyi Cave system is the longest cave system of Hungary. This is a labyrinth of narrow passages and hollow spaces. You will need to be ready to climb some stairs: we will climb more than 400 stairs and a 7 meter long ladder. Besides stalactites and stalagmites, the cave has calcite and barite crystals and calcite plate deposits originating from former hot-water lakes.

The caves were a nice respite from the hot air in Budapest. Make sure to bring a light jacket! The tour guide was knowledgeable and answered all questions, and it was an easy stroll. There was one small section of steep stairs (there was the option to go back the other way or climb the stairs though).
The cave tour was a wonderful experience! It started with a 3-D short film about the caves in Budapest which was a perfect way to set the stage for the tour. Our guide, Peter, was laid back, friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. He spoke very good English. He is a cave enthusaist himself and I believe this enhanced our experience. We toured two caves, Semlő-hegyi & Pál-völgyi. The only down side is that the description of the experience doesn't mention that to get to the second cave, there is about aa 20 minute walk through the neighborhoods. It was a pretty hot day for us and we didn't expect this. Of note: There are a lot of stairs and dark, narrow spaces. I am a slow walker and have two replaced knees, one of which doesn't bend as much as the other. I can do stairs, though I am slow. So be ready for that! The second cave, also has a steep ladder to climb. But it was very exciting and worth it. Our guide was quite helpful and patient with me being the slow-poke. He was also funny! The maintenence of the caves is fabulous and most places where there are stairs, a handrail is available. I think this is a unique and worthwhile experience to add to your visit to Budapest!
An awesome experience! The guide was very knowledgeable, with great passion about caves, and knew how to build a nice atmosphere among the group.
Budapest is an incredible city with so many amazing sights, food, and museums above ground. We were surprised how much we loved our tour of the Pál-völgyi and Szemlő-hegyi caves. The introductory movie was great, our tour guide was amazing, and the walk between the caves was a good break between the cave tours. We appreciated having an English tour with a friendly and knowledgeable guide, who we could ask questions instead of having a headset with a prerecorded tour. We were in a small group of about a dozen people so it was easy to stay with the group and hear our guide. Next time we are in Budapest I expect we will go on this tour again. There are steps of different sizes, some almost like a ladder, and some walking in the caves and between the caves, so if that is a concern for you perhaps just tour the Szemlő-hegyi Cave which is a much easier tour.
Dark and cool, i recommend a mobile/flashlight and a light jacket. The tour includes a cave right at the entrance and after a sho walk (10min) a second cave tour. The experience was great and the guide was friendly and helpful.
An excellent experience with a brilliant guide who was so knowledgeable about the cave systems. We visited 2 separate caves which were a good 20 minutes walk apart. When they say dress for the cold believe them. Luckily we had taken the advice. There is a lot of walking and climbing up and down steps plus a 7m ladder climb. You will need to have a reasonable fitness level for this particular event. If you are able to do this, it is well worth it but don't go if tired. Brilliant experience.
Great experience, would definitely recommend! The path wasn’t difficult and the pace was good. The temperature in both cave systems was fine and didn’t need a jacket.
Fantastic guide—knowledgeable, funny and thorough. Caves were so interesting. Different formations were easy to discern.
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, Peter was funny and knowledgeable about the cave system, and Budapest in general. Highly recommended.
Super cool experience and I mean that in two ways! Cool as in awesome, but cool as in chilly inside the caves as well. But it was great learning about why these caves exist and our guide had a fun sense of humor as well. You get to explore two caves on this journey and after the first one, you have a great view of Budapest and then get to enjoy your inner child by going down a brief playground slide. The walk to the second cave is half a mile (our group did it in 12 minutes) and it has a mild incline at some points but it's really a pretty leisurely hike. Bring a sweatshirt to wear inside the cave. The temperature inside is about 11 celsius or 50 fahrenheit. It's also damp and you may have water drip on you (though nothing significant. You won't get drenched or anything)
The first cave is very stunning and has some features you cannot see often. The second one is a more standard cave, mais great to visit too. A short walk of 10-15min. is between the two caves. Pretty easy to walk in the cave. The guide is really good and interesting
This was an excellent, fun trip, and our leader, Peter, was very entertaining and knowledgeable about the caves that we visited. There are a lot of stairs to climb inside the cave but there are handrails and the stairs are very substantial.
We took the tour of Szemlő-hegyi-cave and Palvolgyi cave. There was a 15 minute 3D movie about all of the caves under Budapest. Victor was our guide and he provided great information about the history and geology of the caves with a good bit of humor too! There are concrete paths through a lot of the tour with some steep and uneven steps and a ladder in the mix, so consider your physical condition for this tour. There aren't a lot of spectacular cave formations due to the way the caves were formed but enough diversity of deposits and geology to keep things interesting. If you Google Map to Pusztaszeri ut 37 it will place you in front of a driveway........just go a few meters north and you will find the cave. Well worth your time while in Budapest. Recommended!!
The guide Victor was very humourous and explained the formation in detail. He also imparted many information on caves. Must go tour
By far the best tour we did!!! Great tour guide with Peter, very knowledgeable and great pace. Moderate level of fitness needed
Our guide was super helpful and knowledgeable. Definitely worth it! And to think that it’s all under the city!
The tour was informative, our guide Peter had some good stories to share. The location was easy to get to walking or on a bus. There are 2 caves, exiting the first cave there was a great view of the city. We walked about 10 minutes to the next caves which is near a little restaurant.
The guide was very nice. The caves are beautiful and amazing. The air and feeling underground surprised us, very good see this one day in life.
Excellent tour and tour guide! Very interesting and good value for money. Guide was knowledgeable and entertaining as well.
It was an absolute mind blowing experience to see the amazing caves under the city. We enjoy the sense of humor of the best guide Peter and also all the fun facts about caving. This tour is 100% recommended to add an unforgettable memory during your tour to Budapest!
A friend from England recommended that we take this tour. It was fascinating and I recommend it to anyone that does not have any mobility issues.
What an experience! I really enjoyed this trip. It started with 3D movie about the caves and some geological facts and data. Peter ( I believe this was the name)the host was very knowledgable and interacting with a group of 7 people. The experience was fascinating: to walk through the caves, hear the history of it and climb the ladder up through narrow cave passage which lead you out of the cave.
Caves are amazing to see and our tour guide was very good. There is a lot of walking and climbing stairs so anyone looking at doing this wear appropriate food wear plus bring water/snacks
Fantastic experience made even better by the guide Attilla. He was very informative and knowledgable whilst also keeping things light and fun. A must do experience whilst in Budapest
Very good. Wear non slip shoes as the floors are wet and if you dont like ladders maybe think twice
The guide was super nice and even gave us a great recommendation on where to go to after the tour had ended. The caves were very beautiful. Would definitely recommend! Tip: bring something warm like a vest with you cause it’s cold.
Guide was interesting but not so responsive to keep group together. It would have made the tour more interesting to show consideration for all involved.
We had a great experience - our guide (sorry missed his name!) was really fun and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to do something unique.
Me and my boyfriend went on our second day in Budapest and it was such a good decision! We had an amazing time the tours were well organised and was absolutely worth going with the private group for English speakers, our tour guide was Peter and was very friendly and happy to answer all questions, amazing views of the city when we exited the caves and the caves themselves were breathtaking!
The guide was very informative and funny, I can’t remember his name but he made us feel safe and reassured throughout the walk. There were some steep steps and a lot of walking between the 2 different caves so make sure to wear walking shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little bit of mud on
Had an amazing tour of the caves with a wonderful guide, Peter. A lot of walking involved so wear comfortable shoes! Beautiful rock formations and our guide gave a good commentary about the caves and was also friendly and humorous! A pleasant temperature underground. Would thoroughly recommend a visit here.
1st time cave walking and really enjoyed it, made all the better by Peter who is hilarious without even trying. Two very good caves to get you started with, both easily accessible with a little stamina required for some of the steps, would definitely recommend 👍
Lovely tour taking in not 1 but 2 caves. Keep looking for the little bats. A lot of steps but very worth it.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and knew to point out the characteristics of the various formations, how the caves were discovered, and by whom in interesting stories which made it entertaining for everyone. He shared a few fun surprises on the way and showed us where the team trains techniques to be prepared for the physical rigors caving requires. This was an easy cave walk for me and my children (10 and under) but there are small footed steps to climb (172 to be exact) and many more in the second cave including metal step ladders with handrails that are cold to the touch. So please know that going in and don't give the guide a difficult time that you had to exert yourself a bit. It is caving after all but just an intro at that. If you don't have any physical or health limitations I highly recommend this tour. It is a truly fascinating look at what lies under the streets of Budapest and who is walking beneath you as you are above! You'll never see the city the same again!
Amazing experience took so many beautiful photos and we had a great tour guide who was very entertaining
We opted for the English tour and was guided around both caves by Adam who is very polite, funny and knowlegeable. The caves are very pretty and can be easily walked through on mostly concrete walkways. There are some steps and one steep ladder, but the whole place is well lit with handrails so is perfectly safe. I would suggest this for anyone with no previous cave experience, or who wants an easy, casual look through a well lit, well presented cave. Anyone looking for a proper adventure should seek the adventure caving experience which looks like it would represent a proper challenge (head torches, hands and knees-type stuff!) Chatting with Adam at the bus stop after our tour, we learned he is a volunteer guide. The fact we didn't realise this during the tour just shows how genuinely interested and enthusiastic Adam is in both tour guiding, and the cave geology itself. He made the visit very enjoyable indeed. If I return to Budapest I will without doubt be booking the adventure caving experience with the same organisation!
We took the English speaking tour and the guide was an expert caver so had a good deal of knowledge about caves and spoke good English. The caves were user-friendly with good pavement and handrails almost everywhere. Going from one cave to the next involved a one mile uphill walk. A shuttle bus would be a good idea as it was very hot outside. The first cave had lockers for personal items but the second cave did not. The easiest way to get there and back is by taxi which is about 11 euros each way.
We decided to go caving underground and weren’t sure what to expect. We loved it! Our tour guide was knowledgeable, experienced and helpful throughout. He shared his personal & professional experiences, gave clear directions and answered any questions that we had. We appreciated this experience, and recommend it! Read up on what to expect before you go so that you are fully prepared. Don’t go if you don’t like dark and small spaces.
We did the adventure caving program in January and had a lot of fun. The guide was very knowledgeable about caving in Hungary and around the world, and taught us a lot about the country, culture and caving as a hobby. He told us a lot about the fossils and minerals that we saw in the cave as well. His English was very good and he had a great sense of humour that made the experience even more enjoyable. He took the effort into talking with each person in our tour group and to learn their names which was very kind. He also seemed very flexible to tailor the experience to the desires of the group, e.g. if you showed interest in experiencing as much as possible and weren't apprehensive he would encourage the group to try more challenging parts of the trail. He was very fast going through the spaces in the cave, which the rest of the group thought was quite funny as he manoeuvred through them like a worm. The air quality in the caves is very good so you don't have to worry about getting sick or feeling faint. There are about 10 particularly tightish spots on the walk, with 2 or 3 being more narrow. For the more narrow parts, there was an option to go via an easier route if you felt too claustrophobic. Our guide told us that a 6 foot 5 tall, 300 pound (2m, 130kg) american football player was able to finish the adventure caving experience so most people shouldn't feel as if they won't fit! On the more difficult parts of the walk, the guide watched each individual go through those areas and gave them assistance if they didn't know where to place their arm/hand/whether to watch their heads on the ceiling, etc, so at not point did it feel unsafe. If you have particularly soft/fragile skin, it may be a good idea to ask for knee pads as there is a fair bit of walking on your knees. If you want to be extra careful you can even bring gloves. I wore neither, and whilst my knees were a bit sore and bruised the next day, I would still go without knee pads if I did it again as it was part of the experience. The lockers are locked by the guide before you leave, and he holds the key to all of them to prevent anyone losing their key in the cave. It is unlocked when you get back in the changing room. The changing room also has 2 toilets that you can use, which I recommend using before the walk. I wore leggings and a tank top under my overalls, and I was still quite sweaty as it is very humid in the cave all year. If you are a girl with long hair, definitely bring a hair tie and tuck your hair into your overalls to prevent it from getting dirty/in your face, especially when crawling through tight spaces. The overalls have a pocket where you can fit your phone or something, however you may not want to risk getting it scratched or something so you can leave it in the locker. Overalls and hamlet are provided, but you bring and wear your own shoe. Your shoes will get dirty, however it is not difficult to clean them afterwards. Most enclosed footwear such as sneakers will be adequate. The guide mentioned that they tend to keep groups under 11 people or so, so they can pay attention to everyone on the tour. Our guide mentioned they are working on an adventure caving program for disabled people which allows them to experience the caves, even if they are in a wheelchair, blind, etc. We thought this was a really cool idea and for a small part of the route he asked us if we wanted to experience what the tour is like for blind people. As our group was willing, we were instructed to turn all of our helmet lights off and manoeuvre through a small part of the cave only relying on the touch of other people in the group, and their instructions. We thought this was a really interesting experience, especially since the cave is pure black without your lights on. The guide informed us that if anyone was uncomfortable with doing this that that was fine and they didn't have to so you will never have to be forced into doing something that makes you too scared, however I do highly recommend trying that experience as its very special. The building is quite easy to find as there is a bus stop right outside. If you are coming by bus from the city, once you get off you will have to cross the road. Once the road is crossed, if you look down you will see a cabin style house with some outdoor seating. There are stairs opposite the bus stop that will take you down there. Downstairs there is a bar area where you can get a drink before you start, as well as a friendly cat that walks around. The locker rooms and check in area of the caving adventure are upstairs. Additionally, when we had booked the session it stated that the price was 10,000 HUF per person. When we got there to the pay, the guide informed us the price had been lowered to about 7,700 HUF per person. Instead of taking the full price we thought we had to pay, he made sure we paid the new, reduced price which we thought was very nice. They do not take card, however one individual said they didn't bring cash and they offered him the option to pay via PayPal. One tip, since some parts are a bit slippery, leave a bit of space, about 1.5 feet or 40-50cm between the person in front of you's shoes and your face, as they may slip a bit or kick their feet around a little to pull themselves up through some spaces. This way you can prevent your face getting hit by someone's foot when you're crawling through small spaces/upwards. No one got hit in the face on my tour, but its something to keep in mind.
The cave trip just blew my mind. Came alone on a Monday, and was the only person on the Adventure tour (they also have non-intense walking tours, but this review is of the physical tour). Guide was Edith, who has 15 years of caving experience, in addition to being an environmental scientist (I think), and she led me through an epic adventure where we walked, crawled, and climbed through an intricate cave system, which is an absolute natural marvel to behold and navigate through! Edith speaks absolutely perfect English with an awesome Hungarian accent, and went in detail explaining about rock formations, soil composition, etc. Really an in-depth experience, if I ever had one. If you're worried about it being a 'touristy' trip, with electric lights, safety railings, etc., rest assured - this is 100% natural, and you will be challenged (if you're not a seasoned cave explorer already)! It's just you, your guide (and maybe some other tour members) and your helmet (with an attached headlamp). Be aware that it's absolutely a physical trip. They're not exaggerating when they say that on their website. There are some rather small gaps where you need to fit through, as well as a fair deal of physical exercise where you bend, crawl and climb. You don't need to be an athlete though - If you're in moderate shape and don't have any disabilities or hampering injuries, you should be fine. Getting there is easy - I just followed Google Maps with no problems at all. All in all, I would give 10/5 stars if I could! Probably the best experience of this kind I've ever had!
We booked through the website caving.hu - we emailed them to book in advance. My husband and I did the cave walk instead of the intense caving tour, because we are a little claustrophobic and didn't want to crawl through tight spots. :) It was still a LOT of fun and there was climbing up a ladder at one point, so we did feel it got a bit adventurous which we liked. Our guide was great, really passionate about caving and my husband, who is a scientist, was impressed by his level of knowledge. We loved this experience and felt it added a lot to our trip.
This was such an amazing tour and well worth the money! I was worried it would be a boring walking tour but you are actually pulling yourself through small holes, crawling, and sliding through the caves. If you do not like small spaces or are not active this is probably not the activity for you because they are not exaggerating about how tight some spaces are to fit through. We learned a lot and the guide was hilarious. 10/10 recommend.
We chose the Active Climbing Adventure thinking it would be slightly more challenging than the easier walking tour. Be prepared! This is an intense caving adventure where you are climbing through tiny holes, pushing yourself through using your toes! You will climb over, under, and through rocks. You will climb over steeply angled wet, slippery rocks and will likely think, "oh I could easily get hurt/ die in this situation." Now, this is an amazing experience and we are extremely satisfied with the guides and the adventure. Bring extra shoes and advil; you will be muddy and bruised, but it's worth it!
I didn't book this through trip advisor but with the company direct by googling it (saved myself £10pp). I am claustrophobic and I have to admit I nearly cried a few times! However such an AMAZING experience I cannot explain enough! The gaps are very small and tight but I managed it with some guts. Small groups - around 10 people- our tour guide was brilliant! knew so much about the caves and history, was good at giving pointers about how to get through narrow gaps and also had a sense of humour too. I wouldn't advise going if you are hugely overweight as it will be tight for you however depends how daring you are. Not for the weak or non adventurous, also wear decent shoes- preferably walking boots!
We booked through gotohungary.com, and had the choice between a walking tour of the caves and a "more active" tour. We chose the more active tour. Age limit was 55...we are 52, so figured it would be an easy tourist-like experience. Nope - full-on caving. Our guide, Laszlo, was really awesome - took his time explaining about the caves, taking breaks to help us catch our breath and helping when we were having trouble getting through a tight spot. First descending by ladder 15 meters, then several minutes down-sloping meters of pretty easy rock navigation in wide tunnels/caves. I am not claustrophobic per se, but it is a bit unnerving to think about being closed in so far beneath the surface. Then we had some serious squeezing and tight places. At one point my boyfriend felt stuck and had some anxiety but Laszlo was quick to help. When it was all done we felt like we had really accomplished something. One note - they give you a coverall, but if it is muddy (it was) your cuffs and sleeves will get dirty. They didn't have shoes or Wellies, so our shoes were very dirty but cleaned up ok at home. Overall awesome experience, but as I said not for the feint of heart.
After a short but invigorating uphill walk of about 3km from Novotel Danube we reached the hilly suburb in which the caves lie. There are a number of caves and a few options you can choose as to how many and what degree of excitement and difficulty you can choose. We opted for the main tour of about one hour as my 5-year-old son was with us and we all enjoyed it a lot. The year-round temperature in the caves is 11 Celsius so be sure to take a warm jacket with you. The humidity is also very high and all the surfaces, including all the guide rails for the stairs are wet so make sure to hold tight. The cave itself is nice, with some great formations and the tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and gave us a nice tour.
I cant believe the value here. It was a great tour through real caves. Dont be misled, this wasn't like walking around in caves, this was legitimate caving. Climbing, crawling through very narrow holes, pitch black, dead silent. This was a great adventure for those looking for one, and well worth the money. Frodo was our tour guide and turned out to be an amazing host. Highly recommend.
We decided to do the adventure caving tour largely based on the excellent reviews and are so glad we did. We made a reservation easily online via the company website and the company sent us all the information needed including bus routes. You can also get the H5 train to Szepvolgyi Ut and walk up the hill, which is what we chose to do. The caving tour is great fun and I loved crawling, climbing and exploring the cave branch. Our guide was great fun, knowledgeable and very helpful to my partner, who found it a little tougher. Just make sure to wear appropriate shoes and comfortable clothes for under the overalls. Also, just to provide a disclaimer: the tour is quite physically demanding and if you are not keen on tight spaces or getting a bit dusty, then a walking tour may be more suited to you. If, however, you enjoy a bit of adventure then this is an unmissable experience! I absolutely loved it and my partner admitted she had a great time too despite it not being something she would have chosen herself. Thanks for a great experience!
We came here with a large group of all ages. Some of us decided to do the caving adventure, where you have to crawl and slide. It was an amazing experience, very informative, little bit strenuous. But the good thing is that they offer a chill walking tour for those who don't want to do the extreme caving :) Loved it! Go visit!
