Itinerary
Most of Hungarian cuisine has deep roots in Jewish history, telling the resilient story of their people. To better understand the connection between Jewish culture and the food in Budapest, our tour will begin at a synagogue with a brief introduction from an expert guide.
We’ll continue learning about Jewish influence on Hungarian cuisine by strolling through District 7, a former Jewish neighbourhood and home to the biggest synagogue in Europe. Nowadays, it’s known for its vibrant nightlife where you’ll find iconic “ruin bars” and restaurants. They're a trend on social media, but they are still deeply connected to the district’s Jewish roots. You’ll explore the streets with your local guide, who will tell you about the history and how it relates to Hungarian cuisine before experiencing authentic street food. Leave your utensils at home; all you need is an open mind! You’ll be eating on the street like a local before heading to some sit-down spots.
Now it’s time to explore the other side of Budapest, one with a bit more glamour and style. You’ll stroll the city’s most expensive streets, where you’ll head to atmospheric restaurants to try traditional Hungarian dishes. We’ll finish the tour with a sweet treat before you continue the night with your newfound friends!

We had an excellent time with Beni. Great vegetarian equivalents to all of the dishes we had.
Absolutely amazing tour! Loved our guide Beni. He was fun and knowledgeable. The food was delicious as were the drinks. Great way to get oriented to the best of Hungarian food
Laura BEST Guide ever. Learned so much about Budapest and the specialities. We did enjoy it very much. Next time again for sure!
Nika was enthusiastic to share both cultural and food information on our tour. It was a great way to kick off our first day in Budapest!
Great food tour with lots of interesting places and tasty food. Our guide Nika was amazing. She gave us many insights about local food and the city.
It was our first food tour, we really enjoyed it & will be trying it again on other city breaks. Lots of tips given for our holiday, great start to our break.
Agnes was a fantastic tour guide! Sprinkled lots of interesting history and information into the tour. Food was delicious at all stops! Great portion sizes too! My 14 year old also enjoyed the experience!
I want to start this review by saying Kelly, our guide, was absolutely fantastic and I give her five stars. I really liked her presentation and the way she tried to connect with everyone in the group. However, the group was 20 people, which is far too large for a food tour. There was some administrative glitch with my booking - Carpe Diem contacted me and asked me to reschedule for the following night, but then tried to charge me a balance for rescheduling. Kelly handled that quickly, thankfully. My third reason for giving this tour four stars instead of five was the restaurant where they took us for the main course. It was good but not great. I’ve been on a lot of food tours and the food should make you want to go back for seconds. The general consensus at my table is that we would not go back to that restaurant. These are not huge issues and I would consider booking with this company again, but just something to be aware of.
Really enjoyed this tour, we booked it for the first night of our stay which was definitely a good move. Nice to meet other travellers to the city an learn more from our guide Eszti who did a great job, friendly and personable, made everyone feel very welcome, super English and shared lots of recommendations. I wasn't anticipating being full but we were well fed! Well considered food stops, local insights shared and plenty of recommendations and top tips for maximising the rest of our visit to the city. We definitely ate and drank things we would not have discovered without this tour, cherry beer!! Delish! Thank you
Our Budapest Food Tour was one of the highlights of our trip! From the moment we met our guide, Estee, we knew we were in for something special. She was warm, knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about sharing the history, culture, and cuisine of Budapest. We began in the historic Jewish Quarter, where Estee brought the area’s fascinating history to life before introducing us to authentic Hungarian specialties. Every stop was thoughtfully chosen, and each dish had its own story. We sampled a wonderful variety of traditional Hungarian foods, from savory street food and hearty local favorites to a delicious dessert and even a taste of Hungarian pálinka. If you’re visiting Budapest, this tour is a must! Ask for Estee if you can? she made the experience unforgettable. Highly recommend! 🇭🇺🍽️
The food stops were very good and some included beer or wine. the portions were sufficient. It was a nice size group and our guide, Agnes, did a great job. It was difficult to hear her sometimes since the streets can be noisy.
Awesome experience. Highly recommend. Come hungry as the portions are very nice size. Walking from place to place helps as well, so you free up some room
Laura was lovely! In addition to describing the food culture of Budapest and Hungary, she gave us nice tidbits of historical information along the way!
This was a great tour to learn historical facts about Budapest while enjoying various Hungarian food and drinks! Nika did a great job!
Niki our tour guide was wonderful. She was very sweet and knowledgeable. It was fun trying all the different foods and drinks.
Very nice tour. Agnes was very knowledgeable. Even though we had done rain we fought through it to experience authentic Hungarian food! Thanks
this was a great experience! we tasted several varieties of food and our guide did a great job of explaining everything there was plenty of food- by the end we were so full!
Our guide Estee was fun and knowledgeable. She taught us a lot about Hungarian foods. She even gave us recommendations for the rest of our trip.
Agnes was great. It was very informative and the food was really good. Perfect afternoon or evening activity
Fantastic guides Peter and Kiki were warm friendly and very knowledgeable about food wine and Hungary in general
There were 6 of us in the group, from 3 different countries. Peter was our guide, a native who speaks perfect English. We had a great time not only tasting different Hungarian food that we had never tried before, but even better time bonding, learning a few Hungarian words and some Hungarian history from Peter. We also got to share and exchange stories and travel experiences. Peter was a great host, personable, fun, and so easy to talk to. We enjoyed our time walking through different neighborhoods, from the Jewish quarters to the Opera House and back to the cool area with many bars with arcade games. All the food, wine and beer choices were excellent, for those who didn’t want alcohol, we were offered the best tasting lemonade (with orange and lime and strawberries), so good! We thought we were hungry, and I tried real hard to pace myself and not finish what was offered. But by stop #3, I was completely full. Stop #4 was dessert which I could never resist. It was a lot of good food for one afternoon. Highly recommend this food tour!
Laura was a great guide-organized, entertaining and informative. Food and beverages were good. The first and last stops-soup and dessert were delicious! Also, interesting group with participants from around the world!
This tour is excellent and one that I highly recommend you do when in Budapest. Food and drinks were awesome. Kitty our guide was the beat. Her energy and passion was infectious. Her knowledge of the food scene added so much to our experience. We really enjoyed her enthusiasm.
Excellent tour with Kiti! She was fantastic and knowledgeable :) definitely left full!
Excellent tour with lots of good food and drink to try. Our guide Peter was very kind, knowledgeable and helpful too. Thank you Peter!
I've been on a few food tours since I started by Europe trip. This is possibly my favorite one. Kitti was the best tour guide and you're missing out if you don't do this tour!
Kitti was an amazing tour guide. The food was great and she told us a lot about Budapest as we walked around the city. I would recommend it to anyone!
The Budapest tipsy tour was amazing! We learned some interesting facts, had a lovely chat and obviously had some great food! Laura is a real profesional! Highly recommended!
Great tour, fabulous food, very knowledgeable tour guide!! The four courses were perfect and a great example of Hungarian cuisine
Our guide was very sweet and helpful. Good food and insights into Hungarian cuisine. A lovely experience all around.
Really enjoyed the tour and Eszti was a fantastic guide. Wish we had done the tour on our 1st day rather than last to experience the recommendation's she provided. Will do them next time.
Great tour! Kitty the tour guide was fun, knowledgeable and interesting. We went to 4 different restaurants on the tour and everything we tried was delicious.
A fun culinary tour that covered the many varied aspects of Budapest. Peter was an excellent guide. Highly recommend!
Agnes was so sweet and took her time to listen to our stories, even told us some stories and background about the foods we tried. Definitely dont eat before coming because you get nice size meals.
Our group of 3 went on this tour with Kitti as our guide. She is from Budapest and was passionate and knowledgeable about the area. She shared valuable and interesting info and personal stories that kept the group 7 adults entertained and engaged. She was amazing!
Nika was very knowledgeable and attentive during our food tour. We learned a lot about the delicious food we tasted as well as the culture and customs of the area. Her English was excellent so she was very easy to understand. Would highly recommend her.
A great way to experience local foods and see the neighborhoods along the way! Péter is knowledgeable, articulate and an excellent guide! The walking pace was brisk between stops (great for preparing to eat again!) And the time eating was relaxed and pleasurable. As a personal bonus, Péter helped me with my Hungarian!
Kitti was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the local cuisine and the history of Budapest! 10/10 would recommend
Fun tour with Nika. So friendly and so enthusiastic about food. The soup at Bors was so wonderful- I wanted to go back for more!
Tour was awesome and Laura is a great tour guide who brought a lot of energy and character to the whole group! 🙌🏾
Excellent! Our guide Eszti was a delightful guide. Very knowledgeable of food, history and culture of Budapest. We really enjoyed our tour and every food dish!
Great night with Peter and Astee as our guides. Fairly small group. Tried 4 local dishes and a few local wines at 4 different unique local venues.
Thank you, Kitti! What a fun afternoon on your food tour! Stops were all very different, portions were generous and packed full of flavors. Kitti was engaging and knowledgeable, prepared to accommodate any food sensitivities and made sure everyone was looked after. Even though the stops were few, they were all informative! Tip: skip breakfast if you’re doing an early afternoon tour.
This was a great introduction to Hungarian food and drink and a great way to explore the 6th and 7th districts where lots of places to dine are located as well as the ruin bars. Kelly was a great host and was very informative and sent us a follow up with what we had to eat and drink along with other dining recommendations for the remainder of our stay.
Laura was great and took us to fantastic locations for great food. Highly recommend! I would book a tour with her again!!
Absolutely amazing. Exactly what we had hoped for. Agnes was so friendly and knowledgeable. The food was fantastic
We had a wonderful time exploring the area and being introduced to local food and drinks led by Peter. Peter was very pleasant, patient and informative during and after our excursion. He went above and beyond by sending a list, which included the eateries, foods and drinks sampled, after our excursion. The only glitch was we were unaware that the meeting point had changed; however, the group waited for us. Thank you!
Fun time; small group; got to know each other from: Australia, England, Ireland, US CA and FL. Peter and NoNo were great hosts; also gave us history of Hungary and background of food and drinks we had.
