We were in Budapest for three days prior to our cruise up the Danube and decided to find a local tour guide to show us the best of the city. We hit the jackpot when Dominik met us the next day. He gave us a tour that combined the history of the city and nation into an interesting and fun day that we will never forget. Dominik gave us many memorable moments as we traversed across the city on foot using public transportation. He took us everywhere we wanted to go that day and gave us the background of the people, monuments and historic moments that provided great context to the beautiful city of Budapest. Touring with Dominik was one of our best decisions and worth every “forint”. If we ever get back to the city, we will be sure to set aside another day with Dominik.

Itinerary
Walk through the impressive Heroes' Square, the largest square in Budapest. In the middle of the square you find the Millennium Monument, while on its two sides you will see the Arts Hall and the Fine Arts Museum.
Visit the Millennium Monument, commemorating 1000 years of Hungarian history. In front of the monument you will find the grave of the unknown heroes, while in the colonnades around you can admire the statues of the greatest kings and leaders of the country.
Explore Budapest City Park, the oldest public park in the world. Walk over a bridge to reach an island on the lake, home to the romantic Vajdahunyad Castle. All around the courtyard there are copies of buildings representing different periods and styles of Hungarian architecture.
In the inner courtyard of the castle you will discover the interesting statue of Anonymus, the first history writer of Hungary who lived in the 12th century.
You will pass by the main building of the famous Szechenyi Baths, the largest thermal bath of Europe. Through the windows you will be able to see the outdoor pools and people swimming in the warm water.
Admire the elegant Andrassy Avenue, the 2 miles long historical thoroughfare of the city. The Millennium Subway (Budapest Metro line 1, built in 1896) runs under the avenue, and preserved its beautiful original stations.
One of the most beautiful opera theatres of the world. You will learn about its interesting history, architecture and rich artworks.
You will visit the impressive Saint Stephen's Basilica built for the memory of the first Hungarian king (died in 1038). It has many statues and frescoes, as well as the mummified right hand of the first king. Open every day, except Sunday morning religious service.
You will see the dramatic monuments of the Nazi and Soviet occupations and dictatorships as well as the miraculous fountain (during the warm season).
You will see the memories of the Hungarian freedom heroes and the 1956 revolution against the Communist dictatorship.
You will admire one of the most impressing parliament buildings of the world with its amazing history.
We will cross the river Danube and get to the Castle of Buda where we will explore the panoramic terrace of the Royal Palace with the most beautiful view of the city.
See a beautiful fountain made in the 19th century.
Then we will move from the castle of Buda to the palace of the president with the guards in historical uniforms.
As a next stop on the tour you will have the chance to admire one of the most beautiful and fascinating places in Budapest, the Fishermen's Bastion with the famous panorama over the river Danube and the Hungarian Parliament building.
We will walk around the beautiful Matthias Church built in the Middle Ages in Gothic style. (On request it is possible to visit it inside with your tour guide. The inside visit takes about 30 minutes, and an entrance ticket needs to be purchased.)
The iconic bridge is under renovation currently (from 2021 to 2022).

It was a wonderful experience to see the sites on foot, up close & personal & hear about the history of Buda/Pest. Our guide, Katalin was superb, friendly, her grasp of the history & facts were amazing. She guided us all over & we experienced the public transportation with ease (thanks to her!). We so enjoyed everything about this tour. Very comprehensive & great intro to the key points of interest which you might just ride by on a bus on another tour.
Outstanding experience, Elisabeth our guide was so knowledgeable and took us to the most important areas of Budapest. We were hesitant to use the public transport but it was really good.
Very thorough Budapest tour. Our guide Elisabeth was perfect for this tour as she showed us most of the important parts and history.
Loved how comprehensive this was and how we were able to focus on what we were interested in. Highly recommend!!
Comprehensive certainly describes this tour. We received a great introduction to all the key points of interest in both Buda and Pest. Our guide, Flora, was amazing—engaging, very knowledgeable and fun to be with!
This tour will provide you a comprehensive tour of Budapest and is a great value. We got to see highlights of the Buda side and the Peat side. You will use public transportation when getting around town. In Buda you’ll use a bus and Pest you’ll use the original subway system. Would highly recommend this tour, just be aware that you will do a good amount of walking.
Best tour! Our guide was attentive, flexible, very knowledgeable and went at our pace! This guide is why we do smaller tours and are Viator customers! Ask for her by name (Dalia) if you use this tour.
Very knowledgeable guide and very understanding that it took us ages to photograph every aspect of the sights. She knew the answers to all our questions and had personal perspectives as she grew up here
Dalia was extremely knowledgeable! We learned so much about Budapest and I recommend to anyone, especially if you want to see the highlights in a day
This was a great tour. The tour guide was personable, knowledgeable, and catered the tour to what was most important to me. It was great to have a local with so much information to help me learn about Budapest.
I only had the weekend to see the city and booked a private all day walking tour. Andrea was a great guide and we covered all the major sites. She has a lot of knowledge about the history of the city. I purchased a 24 hour transit pass and we used trams and trains which was also a fun way to get around the city.
We asked Noemi for a private tour of the Danube Tiver Bend and she did not disappoint us. We didn’t want to be on a large group tour with so many others. We are 4 seniors. She worked up a proposal for us that was great. She communicated with us on the website on what to expect and met us at our hotel as arranged. I had to change our meeting time which we did by email and she promptly replied each time I emailed her. Noemi and Ursula, the mini van driver, met us a planned and took us out to the 3 cities of Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre. Wow, Noemi knows a lot of history about the area! She was a great guide. She gave us all sorts of info about what we were seeing on the drive along the way and about the places we visited. We had a fantastic day. Thanks girls!
