The guided tour was absolutely fantastic! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the synagogue, its history, and Judaism. His English was clear and easy to follow, even for me as a native German speaker. The tour even ran longer than scheduled because our guide had so many fascinating insights to share and took the time to answer everyone’s questions thoroughly. It was a truly enjoyable and informative experience. Highly recommended!
Don’t miss this opportunity. Our guide was very knowledgeable and experienced. She gave us true insight into the traditions of the Jewish community. It was an emotional experience for us. Pay a visit to the museum. It’s worth it.
Dave was an amazing guide He is so knowledgable about Hungarian history and the struggles the Jewish people endured. He speaks with empathy and is easy to hear and understand.
Excellent guide. It would have been nice to have been told at the time of booking that men should take a cap. The kippah provided did not work for my bald husband.
The Synagogue has interesting architecture and history. The "free" guided tour is a little rushed. However the entrance fee, the equivalent of £70 for 2 is astronomical! Had I done the conversion prior to paying we would not have visited.
Knowledgeable, friendly guide.
Humbling, a very sad experience. Glad we made the visit. A bit expensive though, not sure why? After all it’s a place of worship not a museum
Guide was excellent, tour was very informative. Unsure why we were told our tickets did not allow us to join museum part of the tour when ticket clearly states we did pay for that.
Milan was an excellent tour guide, explaining how the Jewish people first came to Hungary and their history through the years. He gave an excellent history of the synagogue as well as a personal accounting of how his ancestors survived the Holocaust.
Definitely recommend. Ticket includes access to synagogue, guide, and ghetto museum, very informative, definitely add it to your list if visiting Budapest
There's a lot to learn about this synagogue, from the reason it looks like a cathedral to the history of the people who built it. The tour guide presented the story clearly and answered all our questions. Really beautiful building and the outdoor museum of famous and accomplished Jews from Hungary was well done.
very impressive synagogue, The guide was not good , not organized speech and with heavy accent not easy to understand and jumping between topics
Don’t miss seeing the Dohany synagogue. Very beautiful and an interesting history. Tour guide adds to the experience.
The price was incredibly steep. £71 for two seniors. (29,000 Hungarian forint), it’s supposed to be the largest synagogue in Europe and second largest in the world. Except we couldn’t even get into it. No explanations, just “private, staff only” everywhere. The only thing accessible and interesting was a description of the deportations and subsequent murder of Hungary’s Jews on 1944. The entrance fee was skilfully put in just Hungarian forint, so dividing everything by 400, rather than seeing equivalent in Euros , Dollars or Sterling, was not straightforward. Very disappointing. Avoid.
Disappointing. The guide was not professional enough in my opinion. Spoke very fast. Not knowlegable enough to my opinion for such an importent issue of the Jewish community and genocide in hungary. Spoke too much about himself. Total waste of time.
Miki our guide went in depth, proved patient and was generous with his time. The synaguoge per se is very interesting as it combines several influences from within and from outside Judaism proper. We benefitted from a complete overview of Jewish history in Hungary over the last 200 years or so with many captivating insights. Highly recommended.
Women need to have their knees covered and it would have been helpful to have known this in advance. I had to purchase a ‘wrap’ prior to entering the synagogue as I was wearing shorts. Also the guide Milan was very knowledgeable but a little hard to understand.
Interesting but painful information about history of Jews in Hungary then and now Tragedy of innocent people
Exquisite ornate synagogue unlike any others. Our tour guide Flavia was very knowledgeable and passionate adding a lot of additional historical background to the tour. One can only imagine what attending a service would have been like pre Shoah
Sometimes you get the perfect tour guide and an amazing tour. We had both with Flavia. So knowledgeable, easy to understand, funny, and a total pleasure!!!! This was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you Flavia!!!
A personalized tour with a knowledgeable friendly tour guide Claudia - really stands out as a tour guide
Flavia was enthusiastic, engaging with children and adults; she made sure to provide info relevant to the range of participant knowledge of Judaism and Jewish history in Europe/Hungary; she imparted info humanely and sensitively; we thoroughly enjoyed our tour
Guide , Miki, was outstanding. He was very intense and deeply connected to his subject. We learned so much! We were only 4 people in our tour so it was very private. Learned the Jewish history of Budapest, the history of the synagogue and all its various parts, especially the organ. As stunning as the interior is, we found the hero’s synagogue ‘s simplicity to be very beautiful as well. The garden area with the incredible Tree of Life, memorials to the Righteous and plaques about famous Jewish Hungarians pulled the whole experience together. The Jewish museum was ok but nothing special. Thank you Miki for allowing to learn so much from you as well as your patience in answering all our questions, especially the musical ones!
David was an excellent tour guide. He provided the perfect amount of history and was a great storyteller. Couldn’t have had a better guide.
David was a fantastic tour guide! Very thorough and engaging.Be sure to check out museum after the synagogues.
Miki was a very knowledgeable guide who provided a very interesting and informative commentary for this tour this was very much appreciated by us.
David, our guide, was amazing. He's jewish and from the local Hungarian community. We learned so much from him. Skipped all lines. Highly recommend this tour!
It was a very informative tour. Our tour guide Milan was very friendly and took his time explaining the sad history of Hungarian Jewish experiences during the war.
Arrived early . Looking forward to seeing this amazing building . Security was over the top .Not worth the money to get in . Dont go Felt ripped off
Most impressive - very large synagogue- our guide gave a good explanation about the origin of the building and dates thru history - the Tree Treason life was good to see
David was our tour guide and hugely informative. A great historian of Jewish history in general and specifics of the Jewish people in Hungary. A great explainer of the basics of the faith. The building and grounds are stunning and the story it tells, quite moving. This was a very worthwhile tour.
Milan was one of the best tour guides ever! His vast knowledge of history, Budapest, and personal experiences made this tour extremely interesting and enjoyable!
It's a great tour of a superb place to see the atmosphere and a lot to learn and if all the guides are as educated as mine was you will enjoy
The synagogue was absolutely spectacular it was much more ornate than expected but still very beautiful. our guide was interesting. I wish he gave us a little bit more of the Jewish history throughout the ages not only of ww2. I also wish he gave us more history and of the symbolism of the interesting items within the synagogue.
Extremely expensive to visit compared to other great sites around the city. Not value for money. Free guide! 15-20 mins. Museum walked around gardens and both synagogues on same site. Several people turned away due to prices! No seniors reduction either.
The guide I had was excellent, very knowledgeable, informative and covered the history in great detail and open to questions. I was very lucky on this occasion, as I was the sole guest. I would not hesitate to recommend this chap..made my day..
Great private tour. Guide had knowledge of history and synagogue. Highly recommend for any individual or group
Very informative guide; beautiful, majestic synagogue, powerful and emotionally gripping cemetery with mass grave from victims of the holocaust.
What a very informative tour this was. We learnt so much about the history of the synagogue and its heritage. It was also very sad with how the jews were treated. Very much enjoyed this tour.
What a beautiful tour and I learned so much. I booked this tour same day for 10am and met the team easily at the entrance. We were the first people in the synagogue and had it all to ourselves for about 5 minutes before the crowds came in. I really treasured learning and hearing about the Hungarian Jewish community and what they went through and how it is today. This is a gorgeous synagogue and is a must see when in Budapest.
Very interesting stories told by our guide . Informative and humours as well as lots of history about the Hungarian and Jewish past. Beautifully building worth the trip .
What a beautiful building, stunning inside and emotional as you walk around the site outside. Make sure you take advantage of the free guides who are very informative about the history of the building, our guide Christian was excellent. Allow 2 hours.
Loved the tour. So much history and information up for grabs. The tour guide was very interesting to listen to and gave us a detailed background of Judaism and its history associated with Hungary. Only wish it would have been a bit longer considering the high amount we paid for the tickets.
An extremely unusual synagogue in size and style. The tour guide (David) was very informative. The Jewish community has a lot to be proud of.
It was amazing, our tour guide Milan was absolutely brilliant, knowledgeable & humorous. The synagogue is beautiful & Milan brought a personal touch to the information.
Excellent tour guide. Very knowledgeable and professional. And a very wonderful person as well. Highly recommended.
Milan was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and a good sense of humor. We are English speaking , so he was a bit hard for us to understand his accent at times, mainly when he spoke quickly. The vibe was cool though.
Our guide, Milan, was excellent. His explanation of the Hungarian history and it's parallels to Hungarian Jewish were very helpful.
Very disappointing. Description seemed to indicate that this would be a special tour with extras. Turned to be one hour with guide in the synagogue complex only - no extras. Not value for money. Would have been better off paying admission fee and then using The synagogue's free tour. Using Viator for years and this is the first disappointing tour.
