Kristina was a fabulous guide for the day, showing us all the best local cuisine and culture. My mother and I were the only people on the tour which made it extra special. Kristina really took the time to get to know us and cater the tour to our preferences. The food was delicious, the wine was fabulous, and Kristina was the best guide we could have possibly asked for. 10/10 all around!

Itinerary
The Central Market Hall is Budapest’s cathedral of food and one of Europe’s largest and most spectacular indoor markets. We’ll introduce you to Hungarian cuisine through the great variety and abundance of ingredients (mostly local and seasonal) on display. We will discuss the spectacular building, the culture of eating and drinking in Hungary, the ingredients, the dishes commonly made from them … and just what it is that Hungarian home cooks do with all of that pork fat, paprika, and goose liver. As we walk the market aisles we’ll taste a selection of foods (and have an aperitif to fortify us).
We'll pass by this bridge, one of the several spanning the Danube.
We explore the Palace Quarter (a vibrant university area known for its splendid old palaces, where aristocrats built their palatial homes in the 19th and early 20th centuries), and pass by the Hungarian National Museum, on our way to the wine tasting cellar.
The tour concludes with a wine and cheese tasting at an independent wine tasting cellar and shop. A sommelier will introduce us to the Hungarian wine regions, varietals, and styles, helping you put the Hungarian wine scene in context. We’ll end with a taste of the spectacular golden-tinted Tokaji aszú wine, one of the world's finest sweet wines.
We'll explore this neighborhood market, one of the city's fines, where chefs and locals alike shop daily.
We explore the Ferencváros neighborhood, around the Central Market Hall, on our food exploration of Budapest.
We explore the Újlipótváros area (a charming neighborhood, almost like a village within the city, with café-lined streets, art deco buildings, spacious parks, and cute shops), and taste our way through the neighborhood's most lively street.

My husband and I did the Taste of Hungary Food & Wine tour and it was fabulous but go hungry! Our guide Stephen did a great job of orienting us to the city and sharing all of the good food Budapest has to offer. We had everything from Lagos to goulash to strudel and lots of snacks in between. Because my husband and I were the only ones on the tour that day, it was a lot of food. However, we were able to box up what we didn't eat and had it later for dinner. One of the last stops on the tour was at the Tasting Table for a wine and cheese tasting which was informative and a lot of fun. Stephen provided the perfect combination of food history and the history of the country. This tour is a must for all foodies!
This was an excellent tour. The experience is exactly what I’m looking for in a private food tour. We stopped into very small shops that I would have been too nervous to enter myself due to the language barrier. With our wonderful guide we were able to taste fresh authentic local foods. Excellent.
Our guide Bali was excellent. This gastronomic tour was worth every penny. Besides the food, he also gave us some history of Budapest. I highly recommend this tour.
Loved our guide Orshe as she was very knowledgeable not just about the food but the history as well. She offered many suggestions about other dining locations as well as other places to visit in Budapest. The other couple canceled so we were able to have a private tour! We spent over five hours on the tour so wear comfortable shoes and bring your appetite.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What a fantastic way to experience Budapest! Our Culinary and Wine Walk was one of the highlights of our visit. Anna was an excellent guide—friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about Hungarian food, wine, and culture. We started by tasting local specialties and treats at the Central Market Hall, then continued through different areas of the city, sampling more Hungarian favorites along the way. Anna did a wonderful job explaining the history and traditions behind everything we tried, which made the experience much more than just a food tour. The perfect ending was a tasting of Hungarian wines, followed by coffee and delicious desserts. Great food, great wine, and a wonderful introduction to Budapest. Highly recommend this tour, and especially Anna!
Christine, our guide, was personable, warm, funny and wow - she knows about history, geography, literature, art! The food experiences were nestled into context of Budapest social and political forces. This was a fascinating tour. We rode the tram and the subway. We tasted everything from pastries to pickled vegetables to goulash to sausage. We avoided the obvious touristy spots. Great tour. Highly recommend.
This was a great way to learn about Hungarian food and traditions, and see a bit of Pest. Our guide Kristine was wonderful. Highly recommend as an introduction to Budapest and Hungarian food!
This is one of the best food and wine tours ever. I think this company does a great job and I will seek them out whenever we travel. Bali was our guide and he was great! He spoke very good English but his time of voice was perfectly loud enough so we could all hear. He also had the perfect pace for the tour. We loved the food choices along the way and I loved seeing Margaret Island and the cute residential cafes. The cap on the trip with a coffee and dessert just after the wine tasting was a perfect finish! Thanks Bali!
Having only a full day in Budapest, this was a great way to see the city, eat what and where the locals eat, quiz our knowledgeable guide about the history and culture of Hungary. Not only was the food good, but the stories behind them were so interesting. Cristine, our guide, also shared other places of interest, restaurants and things to do on our own. The highlight was the wine tasting and cheese paring at Tasting Table. Well worth our time and money. Thank you Taste Hungary for offering such a good program.
Our wonderful and knowledgeable guide, Kristina, led us to her favorite places to sample wonderful Hungarian cuisine and wines. An easy paced walk through Budapest with multiple stops over the course of 5 hours will fill your day and satisfy your appetite. Witness beautiful architecture along the way. Come hungry
A had a 5 hour tour of Budapest starting in central market, using public transport to explore different parts of the city and eating heaps of delicious food. The guide was personable and gave us a good insight into Budapest. Really recommended!
A wonderful blend of a historical and cultural tour and a taste of a wide variety of Hungarian foods. They took us away from the crowded tourist areas to small shops and markets with authentic, hand made offerings. Our guide Ester was a delight and so informative. Tour information was well communicated and the stops were all very organized and efficient. Although we covered a lot of ground, the pace was reasonable with plenty of options to sit at the various stops. Highly recommend.
The Budapest Culinary & Wine Walk from Taste Hungary was fabulous. We had a great time and learned a lot about the history and food of Budapest. Our guide, Aniko, was excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable. The best part was the variety of places she took us and the different foods we tried, combined with the stories our guide shared.
What a fun tour! Krisztina, our guide, was such a blast. She has lived in Budapest for over 20 years and knows all the good spots and what makes Hungarian food unique and tasty. How do I know? Because our cousin who has lived in Budapest her entire life was on the tour with us and could validate! Krisztina steered us away from touristy spots. The wine tasting at the end the Taste Hungary wine cellar was delightful and we learned so much! I’d happily take more tours thru TH and would recommend this specific tour to anyone who is interested in local cuisine, appreciates non-touristy spots, likes a good walk, and is unafraid to try new things.
Just finished 5 hours of a historic, cultural and food experience that was absolutely amazing. After over 500 reviews of hotels and restaurants, I am often stingy in my praise, but not in this case. Christina was like a friend you visit in a strange city and part from, wanting to return as soon as possible. She was warm, friendly, open and welcoming. Best of all, her food knowledge was conveyed in the manner of a great story teller, always weaving a narrative rather than simply repeating a list of facts. She engaged us in a manner that invited questions and replied with a great sense of humour (no matter how silly the question in my case. The only criticism I might have is that the sheer volume and variety of food consumed may exceed the capacity of those of us with little will power. This was not just good value for money, it was a bargain. I highly recommend the tour and Christina in particular.
They make you pay in advance for the tour. It was $168.50 per person. To put this in perspective, this is the same as I am paying for a full tasting menu, at the chef’s table, at a Michelin star restaurant in Budapest. This was certainly not Michelin quality food; it was procured from stalls at food markets and small “mom and pop” restaurants. We certainly didn’t go to any hidden gems. The tour itself was interesting and gives a good overview of Budapest neighborhoods. I liked the tour guide. She was knowledgeable and interesting, although towards the end it seemed like she just wanted to wrap it up. Now here comes the worst part … I initially booked this for three people: my cousin and aunt (whom I was supposed to travel with) and myself. I paid in advance and my card was charged over $500. A week and a half before the tour, my cousin had an aneurism while travelling in Albania. Doctors told her she could not leave Tirana for two months as there is still blood on her brain and she has great difficulty walking. I emailed the tour company five days in advance and called multiple times to try and get a refund, at least for my cousin and her mom. They were 0% unsympathetic. Refused to refund my money. I ended up going on the tour alone. I would have thought that if I had paid three times the price I could at least get an extra glass of wine in the tasting or other perks. She bought me two additional chocolates but that was it. The whole experience left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Great tour. We started out and the Budapest market. Got to try hungarian specialties including the pickel vegetables. We took the subway and headed to another neighborhood had Hungarian soup, pastries, wine and cheese tasting. But what made this tour so enjoyable and educational was our tour guide,Christina. She brought to life the history and people of Hungry, their struggles, their lives after the war and life under communism. Must do tour.
If you like food, history, and culture, this tour is for you. Christina was so kind, patient, and knowledgable. This is a day I will always remember. I would highly recommend it. In a word: epic.
We had such a great day exploring Budapest with Esther! We saw a lot, learned a lot and tasted a lot! I can’t say what the highlight was as there were so many. I would highly recommend this tour.
Really enjoyed this food tour given by Angela. She was lovely, welcoming and knowledgeable. We made several stops including the main market hall, and tasted many delicious things along the way, Of course the tour was not just about food, Angela peppered the walk with lots of insightful information about the history of Budapest and its people. This tour was a fantastic value for the amount of food we were able to try. Delightful. Highly recommended.
Great tour with Angelica. All about food and culture and wonderful overview of Budapest and Hungary. Lots of tasty treats and experiences in a 4 hour walk. Glad we did it.
You do these tours because of what you will learn about the place, people and culture both from the guide and through the food. This tour was great. Can highly recommend. They are constantly working on making it better and showcasing what they are proud of culturally, and we learned a lot, it was well paced (not rushed and didn’t drag) and gave a great introduction to Hungary and Budapest.
Andy was an amazing guide! We got to try so many dishes, and they tasted much more flavorful and authentic than the highly reviewed restaurants that we found ourselves. The wine stop at the end was perfect, and one variety was especially unique. We also just loved hanging out with Andy, really chill vibes with great food, drinks, and culture. Thanks for the welcoming and informative intro to Budapest!
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable about not only food, but history and culture in Hungary. The tour has a great variety of food and drinks in great places.
This was brilliant, Angela, our guide was super knowledgeable and we visited loads of different foodie places and tried all sorts of delicious authentic Hungarian cuisine that I would never have tried otherwise. Plus lots of history thrown in. Really excellent!
There were 6 of us on the tour with Andras(Andy) and we all had a wonderful time. We had been on two other city tours, but Andy gave us a lot of new information regarding local foods and customs. We tasted many different types of local cuisine including several things we had never eaten before. This tour was a highlight of our time in Budapest and I would highly recommend it1
I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about Hungarian culture, history, and food, while also eating delicious and interesting examples of Hungarian food. I can’t believe how many different items we got to sample, first at the market and then at different restaurants throughout the city. Several samplings were items on my list of foods to try while in Budapest (langos, goulash, dobos torte), but we also got to try unique items I’d never have experienced if not for this tour. We actually ended up going back to two of the places later on in our trip since the food was so delicious! Our guide, Eszter, was very knowledgeable of both the food and Hungarian culture, answering all our questions, but was also very welcoming and friendly, giving us tons of suggestions on where to go while in the city. The sit down wine and cheese tasting at the end was the perfect finale for the tour.
My mom and I thoroughly enjoyed the 4 hour food and wine walking tour. Our tour guide Ursula, was friendly and very knowledgeable. We ate our way through the Central Market, had a family style lunch at a restaurant, stopped in at a bar for a shot of Unicum, then on to cakes and coffee at a cukrászda (basically a dessert cafe), and ended with a wine and cheese tasting where we also learned more about Hungarian wines. It was a lot of food, but the walking over the course of the tour helped offset the fullness. I highly recommend this tour.
We had a wonderful morning/afternoon strolling the culinary markets and streets of beautiful Pest. Elsa was the perfect guide with her passion for food and history. After tasting every part of Hungarian food culture we ended with a nice wine tasting paired with delicious cheese. It was a perfect day!!!
Handled well, great guide and excellent food and wine-perfect! Good view of market, foods of Budapest and awesome dessert with pairing on wine.
We had a great time on this tour. Anna was a fabulous guide with a great knowledge of the history and culture of Hungary. The food stops were varied and unique -,starting at the markets and moving through an elegant and historic hotel cafe to a retro 70s communist era espresso house and the original ruin bar (a real highlight). We then went for a Hungarian wine tasting at their cellars. We’ve done many food tours and this was definitely one the best.
Lots of food. Funny and interesting guide. We got to see parts of the city we hadn’t seen and the wine course was very informative.
What’s great experience walking to some local shops and tasting dishes along the way. I loved the amount of time spent in the Market Hall tasting and hearing about the food culture and history. Recommendations of places to eat along the way were given. Small group of 5 so it was easy to hear and ask questions. I’ve done food tours in the past and was so overstuffed to uncomfortable due to having your own dishes for each stop. This was shared small plates so you still got enough and were full at the end. We had a wine tasting at the end paired with cheeses. Highly recommend this tour, I would definitely do it again. One of the best I’ve been on.
Absolutely the best tour in Budapest! Our tour guide was great - knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We sampled so many different types of food and our guide explained them all. She even added food tastes when we commented on what she told us about Hungarian foods. Our guide also told us the history of Budapest and was able to answer any questions we had. Would highly recommend this tour.
Loved it! An excellent food tour with Anna who was friendly, enthusiastic and informative with lots of background, stories and history to share. We started with a wander around the market with langos, charcuterie , lavender and truffle jelly tastings, pickles, unicum and more. Lunch was at a local butcher’s shop with lots of Hungarian food including traditional goulas soup, meat, pickles, salads. And then a park side pastry/cake cafe with lots to try. And then a wine tasting. Lots of different foods to try - definitely come hungry!
Eszter was excellent. What a great tour and experience. She is so knowledgeable and explained everything. We truly enjoyed this tour. Thank you Eszter.
Angela was very knowledgeable sharing highlights of food, wine, culture and history. Among the stops, we explored specialties in the Central Market tasting traditional langos and meats. Learned about and tasted Unicum ("Unique" Hungarian 40% alcohol digestive that is an acquired taste). Went to a coffee house for pastries at Astoria hotel, then to Visit Hungary's wine bar. We thought 4 hours would be very long but the time went quickly. Really enjoyable.
I have forgotten our lovely guides name, but she was so sweet. We thoroughly enjoyed our walking/tasting tour and learned so much from her. It ended up just being my husband and I with our guide so it was like a "private" tour. We have never done a tour like this before, but will now watch for this in other countries. Highly Recommended.
Great, knowlegable tour guide! Good mixture and representation of local food and wines. Ample bathroom and rest time. Relaxed walking pace. Highly recommend.
My husband, nephew and I had the pleasure of attending Taste Hungary’s food and wine walk last week while in Budapest and it was a highlight of our 17-day Europe vacation. Eszter was so friendly, accommodating, and share so much information about the foods, people and history if Hungary. The food choices were so yummy and we got to see a lot of the city. Thank you for the great tour!
We have done 3 different tours with Taste Hungary now and all have been top notch. Some were just us as a couple and some as a large group. Would highly recommend this tour company when in Budapest or if you want to explore the surrounding wine regions.
Wonderful experience! Esther was a fantastic guide who guided us through the history of Hungary and the wonderful food that is apart of their culture. My family enjoyed the knowledge of our guide and the opportunity to try many different types of food. Esther even gave us some suggestions for other places to try for the remainder of our trip. Definitely recommend this tour!
This was the morning part of the two tours we took with Taste Hungary. Our personal guide, Aniko, was friendly, engaging and informative. She shared culinary history, along with Hungarian history in a way that put the country in context beyond the Communist years. The foods were excellent, as were the wines. Since Hungarian wines are not readily available in our area (Hungarians stated they are selfish with their wines and want them all to themselves) we enjoyed the choices and know we can purchase them through the Taste Hungary distribution center in the USA. We would highly recommend this tour.
We had a great time on our 4 hour culinary and wine walk. It was fun to go to the market and to try some of the local food and drink. Lilas (sp?) was a very good tour guide, we enjoyed her sense of humour and hearing all about life in Budapest. She speaks 4 languages and is interesting and well travelled. It was nice way to spent the morning. It was an easy walk, we visited a variety of places and had lots of food. We also really enjoyed the wine tasting in the wine cellar.
We loved this food tour. Andy was knowledgeable, informative and charming. We knew to come with and empty stomach and did not regret it. The range of things we tried as well as the lovely walking portion was just what we were looking for.
Very nice food tour of the city - got to eat lots of Hungarian local dishes and experience the city.
Great way to spend a morning in Budapest getting to grips with the local delicacies and hearing all about life in Budapest. The tastings were plentiful and varied and we were certainly not left wanting more at any point. We spent the first hour or so in the novel;y central market hall and then visited a butchers shop for lunch, a cafe for cakes, a bar for a quick digestive before ending with a wine tasting in a super cellar. All in all a great tour which we couldn't fault. Definitely recommend.
2nd time on this tour. Did this 11 years ago with daughter and now brought my sister to Budapest so this tour was a must. Not only do you taste local foods but you learn their history too. Starting in the Central Market you taste various delicacies from stall holders and try new and different foods. Then we walk through town to old style butchers shop for lunch. 3 types of sausage, duck, cabbage, cucumber pickle and potato with paprika. All yummy and this is my favourite place and not somewhere you would find without our trusty guide. Then for some Unicom followed by cakes and tea or coffee at the Astoria. All the history behind these places was very informative and fascinating. Last but not least wine tasting, again the knowledge of their wines was incredible but Hungarian wine is a well kept secret. Can compete with any French wine. Great tour guide Elsa if I right answered all our questions and very knowledgeable plus gave us suggestions of places and restaurants to visit. I recommend this tour to all
Great experience. Our tour guide was so good, full of knowledge, nice. The tastings were diverse, special and generous. We had the best time and recommend it warmly.
