We were really disappointed with our visit to the Historium - we were under the impression that it would be a really immersive way to learn about the history of such a beautiful and historic city, but this was not the case. While the exhibits themselves are impressive, a lot of focus is on a story that was like a rubbish daytime tv drama and didn’t teach any history at all. Ironic really as a parting sentence from the main character is ‘now I go on to share the history of this beautiful city with others’…! We couldn’t access the final exhibition as a huge school group were in there and we had to fight to even pass them towards the exit. Perhaps it would be fairer to close off to the general public during the time of a school group. We paid €44 for two of us to go around, and it honestly felt like a huge waste of money and we wish we had saved our money to spend elsewhere. It might be fun to go with children, but avoid if planning to attend as an adult.

Itinerary
In the Historium Story we take you on a time trip to medieval Bruges. Let yourself be swept up in a wonderful love story while walking through seven historical themed rooms – magnificent medieval backdrops, with film, music and special effects. Using an audio guide you will hear everything about the Golden Age of Bruges and imagine yourself back in the time of Jan van Eyck. The Historium is located on the Market Square, where the Waterhalle used to be. This was the central warehouse for the shipping industry in the thriving trading city. The location has been reconstructed in the attraction and gives your visit an extra dimension.
Overlook the Market Square from the Historium's panoramic terrace.

Reminded me of a Disneyland type experience. No history, love story. Really for families with young children. Not interesting for teens or adults.
The Animations are nice, but the story is more like an b-movie. the "museum" to small and some "doityourself" terminals out of order.
This was just bearable. The best part was getting back out into the light and looking out from the balcony. It’s a pretty claustrophobic experience going into one dark room after another without any host to guide you. Why does it all have to be so dark (I guess because of so many screens) - in my opinion self defeating.. The story is pretty unengaging and the narration is too long and can bore the socks off you. There are no windows and the doors close behind you. It felt more like a spooky ride you had to walk/climb through. A human guide would make it far better. Ditch the headphones and have a person talk you through in a couple of languages. Nobody would mind a bit if repetitiveness as long as the spiel is to the point.
Absolutely loved this experience. What an amazing way of showing your city’s history! Would recommend this to just about anyone!
We visited with two under 5s and they both really enjoyed the tour. The story was easy to follow and the sets and moving figures were impressive. We had a beer in the bar afterwards too - it was a big thumbs up from all of us.
The story we were able to experience here made the museum visit a unique experience. It was the most entertaining and informative museum visit I've ever had. I would recommend it to everyone. We had a small problem with the children, but the employee Eline was so accommodating and super friendly that everything was resolved. We haven't experienced such service very often anywhere in the world. Thank you, it was great.
Complete the waste of money. Stupid story about a parrot. I wanted to know about the history of this lovely city. I learned very little. 72 Euros and I feel completely ripped off. Please don’t waste your money
It was a really fun and immersive experience. They have made a 3D movie which takes you through medieval Brugge, following the love story of (fictive) Jacob, the apprentice of the painter Jan van Eyck & Anne. In my opinion it was a bit less about the actual history of Brugge, apart from the loose audio tracks you can listen to when reaching the glass displays, and more about this fictive love story, which in itself was very enjoyable mainly due to the immersiveness of the tour. The love story in itself was really fun. The Video they made to accompany the story was full of detail and intrest and takes you through various themed rooms to immerse you further. The actual historical knowledge of Brugge will be mainly seen near the end of the tour, where you can type in manual codes on the audio machine to hear information on specific displays and eras. When visiting Brugge and you have the time, this is worth to visit and experience once.
Very pleasant surprise. The story experience was absolutely awesome. Plus the beer terrace with the wide selection of beers is something I did appreciate a lot.
Unfortunately, there is no option to give zero stars. This was a total waste of money. You stand in 7 rooms and watch a silly movie. We decided not to waste our time in Bruges on this activity and kept moving quickly through the rooms by hitting the red buttons next to the doors to escape this boring attraction. This turned it more into a bit of a haunted house experience because the rooms were dark with the added scary fox and whorehouse experience thrown in for good measure. One of the rooms smelled like urine. We weren’t sure if that was supposed to be part of the experience since we stopped following the audio on the headphones. Either way, it was disgusting. Don’t go!
This is a great experience and a good way to get a first feel for the history of Brugge. It provides a nice immersive historical experience of the town which is a great reference for exploring the beautiful city later. Only thing to be improved is that when we first entered the sound was out of sync which caused some confusion but once we managed to get back in sync it was great!
My family had a terrific time walking through this very clever interactive tour. A few places were a little dark, but my phone flashlight came to the rescue. Keep in mind there are some steps to go up. We skipped the VR headsets, although that looked like fun. The tour ends on a balcony overlooking square. Great views.
The storyline is very weak and not convincing. It’s a soapy love story in medieval times having Bruges in the background. There is nothing about how people lived and worked. The whole experience is far away from the description on their website.
We were two adults, and really enjoyed this experience. But kids and even teens would really get more out of it. I found the story engaging and the special effects required nice. This is a must to do if you’re with kids and optional if you’re not.
The Historium is a great experience for both kids and adults. It is fascinating to go through time and see the program.
A fool and their money are soon parted. Me, I was the fool — I paid €20 to visit Historium, an exhibition of medieval Briges (allegedly) built into a 19th century neo-Baroque building. The centrepiece of Historium is an absolutely brain dead video presentation that purports to tell a story of on of Jan Eyck‘s apprentices. At the end of this stultifying experience that shuffles the viewer through a series of indifferently executed “medieval” dioramas, you reach a small exhibition space and a third-story balcony that looks down on the Grosse Markt, which is actually pretty cool but not worth the time or money of attending Historium. Save yourself €20 — you can read the Wikipedia article on the history of Bruges for free.
Great way to learn about the history of Brugges. VR was done really well. Story of Brugges was interesting, focused more on story than historical details. Some more gritty historical details would have been good for us as adults but for families this is a great activity.
Myself and my partner got a story ticket only (with no VR) and although the rooms were set up very well with a lot of attention to detail, there wasn't a lot of information on the history of Bruges which is what we were hoping for. It was essentially a love story played out on screens, continuing in each room. It would be perfect for people with families and younger audiences but we wanted more history of Brudges rather than a story.
Quite creepy walking though to different rooms and captured the atmosphere of the history and the time.
It was raining so we decided to go into the museum and we had a lovely morning there. The headsets were clear and great as you walk around the guided exhibit. Follows a story about a man and his experience in medieval Brugge. Afterwards your free to explore the rest of the exhibition and go on to the terrace with a lovely view overlooking the market! On our way out we stopped in the Bier bar also overlooking the market
Wow. What an experience. My friends and I entered Historium with little to no expectations and were very pleasantly surprised! We purchased the ‘story’ ticket for €14 (with student discount), donned our headsets, and entered with baited breath. The production value was excellent and, although the storyline was a little patchy at times, we loved learning about the history of Brugge through the creative emmersive experience. It enthralled the senses and the view of the end was phenomenal. A truly unique experience! Open your heart and your mind to an unexpected story of love, plenty of history, and a fabulous time!
A truly immersive trip back in time and the stroll through the museum, with individual headsets, really made the experience come alive. My one regret was that I didn't take advantage of the 3D experience when I had the chance. The views over the market square from the tower and balcony would have been really stunning had the rain not been torrential. so pick a day when it's not raining to take full advantage of your visit. If I visit Bruges in the future I will certainly visit again.
Very disappointing. €17 for the story - walking through 7 themed rooms with a headset on. Cool idea and probably great with kids as immersive but a real lack of history. They even charge extra for the loos…
Tells a disjointed and frankly daft story of a boy from medieval Bruges, through a series of mini films in staged rooms. Learnt little of medieval Bruges and wondered quite why we were there.
I had to return to reception and get a refund as I am claustrophobic my wife said it is very good and it was a bit close in places I think they should put signes up before entrance not arround the corner in museum
Family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers) thoroughly enjoyed the Historium. The self-guided tour was both really interesting and also engaging in the way it was done. Also, the Historium's marvellous bar with balcony overlooking the main Markt Square was a wonderful way to finish the day. I would recommend the 3 x beer taster tray. A absolute must-do if you come to Bruges.
Opens (in September) at 11 not 10. Absolutely not a history of Bruges at all. A series of videos in themed rooms suitable for schoolchildren, telling one specific and rather silly story. What a waste of £20+ each! Didn’t try the VR as it was very full of kids.
You are just watching a video, well shot, but no historic value. Also, pricy as your done in an hour. Feel like a tourist trap, rather than a museum.
Not a museum but only showing video of a make up cheap love story. No historic article also, you just watch a video. Don't waste your money.
Not worth it at all and quite expensive for what it offered. For your young kids might be scary and cannot follow the story. I wouldnot recommend it.
It's an audiotour through Medieval history of Brugge. You will walk through seven themerooms, while a story is told. At least it gives a brief overview of life in that era.
This is a small number of rooms in historic style and a filmed - thin- story that gives a little info on the way the city developed. The attraction is well marketed, the experience a little disappointing for an adult audience. Go there if the weather is bad and you've seen the interesting museums.
1st visit to absolutely do when you arrive in Bruges, to better understand everything you will see afterwards. Very fun and educational.
Fantastic journey made in time. Learned a lot but mostly enjoyed and culture / history done. Very fascinating and accessible building.
We actually had other plans but then we walked in here to have a look and decided to do this tour of this building and thought this was very nice and nice done
The Historium Brugge has a format that you may like more or less, but you generally know what you’re going to from the beginning. In our case, the experience did not start well: while we were preparing the audio guide for a young child, they started the group without warning and completely uncoordinated us. From there, the audio did not match the rooms and it was difficult to follow the story, without the possibility of correcting it. I think the system has little room for adjustment once inside, which means that if something fails, the experience suffers a lot. That said, after commenting on what happened, the staff responded correctly and returned 80% of the amount, which is to be appreciated and compensated in part for the situation.
Very nice experience!! Is well put together with the videos that are incorporated into the decor, as if you are concerned with it. Very interesting and clearly explained about a piece of the medieval history of Bruges. Highly recommended and a nice relaxing activity for young and old.
Very nice experience! You get headphones on and are digitally taken on an adventure with Jacob through old Bruges via 7 rooms. When the Tour is finished, you can still interact. Then we had a delicious drink in the bar overlooking the market square.
Kids stuff. For families quite nice and for people with an attention span of a moth maybe okay. Otherwise, little draft. Superficial love story in Bruges with some props around it. Lots of money for nothing.
Superb museum, I highly recommend it. A true immersion in a very interesting history, with fascinating exhibitions that captivate attention and enrich knowledge. It is a place where you can really feel history and culture.
We really enjoyed our visit to the historium in Bruges. Through the story of 2 Bruges we were able to experience both their story and we also got to hear a part of the history of Bruges' rich past in every room we visited. Highly recommended also with children who can enjoy themselves in the last room solving questions about the past.
Already been here as a teacher and in the holidays as a tourist. It is certainly a nice added value for children and young people that makes history very visual. The story is accessible and shows a microstory of Bruges in the 15th century. It must be said that the bigger picture is somewhat lacking and that the added value seeker remains a little hungry. More contextualisation might have been welcome. Those who only spend a few hours in Bruges for the first time have little business here, but those who have already visited the 'real' city will find a welcome change here. Even in less weather, it can be a great alternative.
Pure illusion! I expected a total immersion in the Middle Ages of Flanders, but it was made excessively gloomy, almost horror movies, and the audio guides did not work well. Too bad because the story told by the young artist and his muse was cute, and with a happy ending. Dear grace that I paid 16 euros instead of 20, thanks to my 100% disability.
Because the weather was very bad, we decided to visit this museum. Entrance of 20 p.p. for just the story was a bit on the pricey side, but you did get your money's worth. Through a film about life in the Middle Ages, you got an idea of what it was like back then. You walked from room to room that was recreated as the scene in the video. think of the Point of Sale, the harbor, domestic life, bathhouse etc. The rooms were decorated and cared for to perfection. Afterwards you had ended up at the top of the museum where you could still view everything about the history of Bruges in the Middle Ages via your own audio. It is also recommended to watch the video of the making off about the story that ran through the museum.
We visited the Historium story and came away very satisfied. The visit is very well thought out to captivate the visitor, the history presented is really great, the beautiful immersive settings are worth highlighting. To recommend.
The museum reminded me somewhat of The Canterbury Tales, the museum in Canterbury, England. It was an interesting way of doing a museum, based on a story, film and built sets. I thought the story itself was somewhat lackluster, but it was a special experience, nevertheless a bit disappointing, although I think that for people who have never visited such a museum, they will be anything but disappointed. The museum area afterwards was clean and beautifully presented, although the displays themselves and interactive elements (except the screens) were very dirty, which is a downside as they are mainly intended for children. The information from some displays was also confusing or repetitive when listening to it with the audio guide. The throne where you can take a photo and the view from the balcony were extremely nice pluses to the entire experience. In terms of staff: the person at the desk was quite curt and not very welcoming, while the person in charge of the audio guide was extremely friendly and approachable. The toilets were neat and the prices of the shop were very over the top for the quality, not recommended as souvenirs.
Nice concept! You will be taken into an exciting story and feel like you are back in the Middle Ages. The rooms are decorated as they were at that time and you can even smell scents that apply to the story. Also fun for children. Afterwards you can also visit a small exhibition and take beautiful pictures of the Belfry on the balcony.
I went with a friend's family. Both adults and children can enjoy it, but if you don't know about Jan van Eyck, you might not enjoy it. At the end, there is a place where you can put on a cloak from that time and take a photo. If you go out to the balcony from there, you can see the wonderful view of the Market Square. Even if you don't know about Jan van Eyck, you can learn about medieval history and the origins of the guilds, so it's a place you'll want to take children to.
Visit more than recommended for adults and children. A great way to learn about the history of the city of Bruges
