This virtual reality tour provides a look back to the Golden age of Bruges. The story they use is kind of cheesy. I would have preferred something with a bit more historical substance. The images are great though

Itinerary
In the Historium Story we take you on a time trip to medieval Bruges. Let yourself be swept up in a wonderful love story while walking through seven historical themed rooms – magnificent medieval backdrops, with film, music and special effects. Using an audio guide you will hear everything about the Golden Age of Bruges and imagine yourself back in the time of Jan van Eyck. The Historium is located on the Market Square, where the Waterhalle used to be. This was the central warehouse for the shipping industry in the thriving trading city. The location has been reconstructed in the attraction and gives your visit an extra dimension. Anyone who wants to try virtual reality will have a wonderful adventure with the Historium VR Experience. It allows you to complement your visit with a virtual trip to Bruges in its Golden Age. Before or after your main visit, the Historium Virtual Reality takes you on an unforgettable virtual tour of medieval Bruges. From the comfort of a virtual reality booth, you travel back in time to the historical city and get to explore it interactively for eight whole minutes. You even get to see and use your hands! An intense experience.
Overlook the Market Square from the Historium's panoramic terrace.

…especially visiting the different rooms with the special effects. We highly recommend for families and adults.
Loved the vr experience. Have occasionally tried grandsons gaming vr headset, but it was much better put to a historic and storytelling perspective. The 360 degree views were impressive in the virtual world. We then went with through the main Historium exhibition which was interesting in terms of the historical context of medieval Bruges, but I did find the tale of Anna and Jacob somewhat convoluted. The exhibition after the Historium was also good, with interpretive links from the provided handsets and headsets. This area would probably have merited more time than I had available at the time unfortunately. Overall a good experience which may make history accessible to more people by bringing it to life with interactive exhibits.
Although technically accomplished, we found this superficial and lacking in any in depth exposition of the times or of the art and techniques of Van Eyck . The narrative was simple and naive- again probably suitable for a 10 year old. We felt there should have been a warning that this was unlikely to be suitable for adults.
Makes learning easy through technique, architecture and easy storytelling. Even my small Kids (7+5) loved it. Well spend time and money. Earning a lot of memories.
I really liked this museum, we came in to escape the sun. The story helped the history of Brugges come alive. I like how they space the groups out so there was only 8 of us going through each part of the story which meant everyone got to see what was going on. It would be better though if there were more places to sit during the story. We did the VR and tower ticket. The tower is not for the unfit (me) my thighs were burning after climbing to the top. Lovely views of the city at the top, but very narrow to walk around. The VR made me feel a bit queesy, at the end it goes "flying" over the rooftops of Brugges. Overall it was nice, not too busy only ruined by a group of Spanish students too busy looking at their phones in front of exhibits (obviously not the museum's fault).
Excellent experience. The VR was brilliant. Overall great experience 4 flights of steps but doable
The historical content was great and the walk-through experience atmospheric. We found the VR extremely disappointing as it was very low quality and just a few minutes long - to charge extra for VR I felt toally ripped off. The VR graphics were so outdated it needs to be significantly improved. I could accept the short duration if the experience was better. At best I feel that should be included at no extra in the standard ticket as it was so basic. You also have to be careful to look straight ahead when putting the headset on or the orientation is off. On the walk-through experience we did have an issue with one audio headset not working, it would only have background music playing so we missed some of the introduction narrative and had to switch it to speaker mode. Not ideal but a fairly minor issue. It would be good if more testing was done. Staff were helpful, friendly and we did not have to wait long. We paid extra to go up the tower which was memorable although is an additional charge which felt excessive. The view is also good from a balcony in the historical area but the tower is even better. Overall I enjoyed the visit and particularly the historical content but it is poor value for money. I bought 2 tickets and received two complimentary 2 VIP tickets from my host. Had I paid for all 4 tickets I would have felt compelled to complain about the VR experience in particular.
Interactive. Extremely interesting. Lovely view of market place.
It was a pleasant way to learn about the history of Brugges. Very attractive graphics and the best way to spend a holiday morning
Last minute decision to visit, it is a beautiful old building and very modern inside. I did the VR experience first this was very good but the VR was a bit blurry sometimes. It was very enjoyable learning about the history of bruges. After this I went to to the tour of about 7 different rooms. The audio guide tells you a story which was actually a very sweet love story as a backdrop to the famous paining by van eyck. You watch a film in each room it was really good to find later that the film is real not AI! The actors were great! It wasnt busy and when I went and I ended up alone most of the time in the rooms. Many of the rooms were really dark I guess so you can see the films better, but I found it kind of creepy especially being alone and the door locks behind you (there is a button to manually press to open it though). I wouldn't say its a scary attraction but I found 1 room a bit unnerving with a life size wax work figure of anna a character in the film, it was a bit too realistic. I enjoyed going out onto the balcony to get a lovely view of the market square. Definetly recommend visiting the attraction if you are in bruges.
I Will make this short. If you are in Bruges and looking for something epic go and experience this immersive museum. In 3 words: epic-immersive- timeless. If you are in Bruges you must visit this unique symbiosis of art, history , storytelling and technology. You will be a huge fan after the visit
The whole experience is a must see when visiting Bruges. The story is really amazing and it really brings you back in time.
Unfortunately, this was not for us. It is hosted in the most beautiful building which you get to see none of while inside. Each room is set up like a small film set with a big screen to listen to a fictional story about a couple in Bruges. There was some history about the area but it was pointless. We were done in around 25 minutes as our group was small. Only nice thing was being able to go onto the balcony and see the market square. Tower and VR experience are extra and would have cost in the region of £50pp! We were expected a historical visit around a beautiful old building - it was all brand new inside and had lost all of its beauty.
A must do! I was sceptical about the experience but I am glad I did it at the end. The walk through time is amazing. You enter different rooms while your virtual guide Jacob tells you a story. The VR experience also is worth it.
I enjoyed this visit. Entertaining, a good story line, everything well presented and very slick. The VR was fun. Enjoyed a drink in e bar afterwards, you can sit outside on the balcony and people watch over the square.
Excellent tour, highly recommended. Amazing insight into the history of Bruges and very well done. Disabled friendly too.
I visited with my family and it was a great experience. My son enjoyed every single moment. The multilanguage VR is priceless for them, makes it much more understandable. another strong point is that I just needed to set up a date, not the hour, so when I had the time I just poped up and had fun.
Overpriced, low-budget experience with little historical relevance to Bruges. The VR Virtual Reality film feels two decades old. The story of Jacob is uninteresting and focuses on a lost bird as you meander through 8 rooms with plastic decorations. I would love to see the IQ test results from anyone who rated this 5 stars. Seems to be targeted at people who don't get outside much. They upsell you on the tower climb which only accommodates 6 people at a time, leading to long wait times. Staff is hapless, and the supervisor was condescending. They got our 62 euros though, so I guess they win.
If you're traveling with kids aged 6-12, this might be fun. For anyone older than that, it feels canned and flimsy. It's essentially a short video of the story of young boy in 16th century Bruge, strung out over seven different rooms. There are a few exhibits at the end. You'll learn far more about Bruge by taking one of their excellent walking tour - and it will be cheaper as well.
This was a very enjoyable experience! We chose the VR, Historium & Tower ticket. VR experience was excellent but only 8 minutes long. Gives you a good insight into life in Bruges during that time period. Nice little tour with a unique experience as you are provided with headphones and digitally taken on an adventure with Jacob through old Bruges via 7 rooms with it's own unique story. At the end of this tour you pass through the beer café where you can stop and take a break experiencing some beautiful views over the market square while enjoying a drink on the balcony. Afterwards, if the Tower is included on your tour this is your last stop, climbing some stairs to reach the top of the tower for some elevated views of the market square. The top of the tower is very narrows, only allowing for one way traffic and a very short stay. However, on the way down you can stop for another view over the square on a wider balcony in a much more relaxed environment. All in all, I would recommend a visit here.
Great VR expierience, could be longer than 8 min, but very interesting, minus 1 star, because reviews need to be 100 digits long??? Why is that?? I dont like that
We went with 2 teenagers. It was expensive but well worth it. We all enjoyed the VR (first timers!) and the history of Bruges is really interesting. You learn about it in a fun way moving through different rooms where you're told a story. It kept our attention. We didn't do the Tower experience as had already climbed the Belfry.
I did the experience and the VR experience and really enjoyed both. It was very quiet the day we were there, I imagine it might be slightly different if it is crowded, but I really loved it. If you have the time I highly recommend this fun was to learn more of the history of Bruges.
Great place to experience Bruges medieval ages! In a 60min pack you see the virtual reality movie (really cool!) Then a sequence of spaces carefully decorated/scenarios like the old times with impressive videos, spaces, smells. Very well done! At some point they present a fairytale story about the green parrot from van Eyck's painting, which is a quite poetic way to show the cityscape, some times as if you are the bird flying the city. In the end there is a small exibition of the city growth with a sequence of maps. I would not miss this! For those saying it's not an accurate history of the city, i think they miss the point! You cannot go to Disney and expect to enter Sorbonne university. This is art and entertainment! Be relaxed and enjoy!
We visited the Historium early December with our children 13yo and 10yo. All four of us agreed it was fantastic, a perfect mixture of fun and learning - edutainment… historifun… just great! The negative views here are surprising. Maybe some visitors are expecting a more traditional museum. We did the VR ticket and story and were hoping to be get a taste of historical Bruges with a big dollop of fun for a few hours and that is what we got. The VR experience is great value and works really well. A super start to our visit, really immersive and gives a great sense of what is to follow. The story tour then sees you walk through a series of rooms, passages and set pieces that tell a lovely love story through which the history of the city is relayed. Absolutely superb, so well done with little surprises along the way meaning this is such good value. After the story adventure there is a more traditional museum area to explore at your own leisure. If you want an enjoyable introduction to the history of the city then you need to do the VR ticket and story tour at the Historium.
Excellent tourist attraction for couples, individual travellers and families alike. The 30 euro ticket is good value as includes the VR experience, self guided tour and climb to the top of the tower. The story on the tour gives a great insight into medieval Bruge and a fantastic historical context. The interactive quizzes after the tour are good fun and give more information about Bruge's history. Parts reminded me of the Jorvik Viking Centre in York. Quirky and interesting, a lovely way to spend a couple of hours especially if it is rainy.
Don't miss if you are in Bruges. It's a beautiful experience for young and adult. I suggest to take the ticket online
I'm sorry to say but this attraction is a marketing scam! It promotes Bruges' history in an interactive way but in reality, apart from the short VR experience, the Historium itself focuses on a fictitious love story in medieval Bruges. For the historical facts, there's an exhibition at the end but the site's marketing department promotes the walk through experience thus one visits with the idea that you'll learn about Bruges' history from it which is far from the truth. At least from the balcony there was a wonderful view of the square all lit up for Christmas but since there's also a bar, I believe it is free to visit without paying for the Historium (unless you buy yourself something to drink).
Excellent virtual reality plus history tour. We arrived first thing on a Sunday when they opened and there was not a line. We did not reserve in advance. You first go into a room, sit down and put on the VR goggles. It was amazing and set up the story. You then took off the goggles and continued through several rooms to hear the complete historical tour which was very good. At the end, we climbed the very narrow, winding staircase to the top for an incredible view of Brugge. Please note that the stairs are very narrow, a little steep, and the walk way around outside at the top is very narrow. I have a bit of claustrophobia and I was fine. A couple of young women who were afraid of heights could not walk around the outside area (it was so narrow that you could only walk around in one direction). The views of Brugge was worth it. Our bicycle tour guide told us this was definitely worth it and he was correct,
This is a well thought out and invested interactive tour. Cool use of VR to walk you through the history of Bruges, followed by a well developed story of Jacob and Anna in old Bruges. This has you going through multiple rooms and watching the story unfold. Then at the end there is a nice medieval bar with a balcony view of the square. This is the future of museum tours!
We were hoping to learn a lot about the life in Bruges during this time period, the daily life, markets, different levels of society, etc. Instead, this attraction focused on a bit of a silly story about a boy searching for a girl and a bird. That being said, adding the VR for 5 euros is worth it. While it is short, it is informative about Bruges in this time period. Also, the exhibit at the end is good and provides more historical background. There is also a nice view of the Market Sqare from balcony of Historium exhibit. I have seen the responses to other reviews saying that this is meant to be accessible to young and old at the same time, but I think that this is possible to do in a much better and more informative way. Instead of being defensive about what the Historium is now, perhaps accept these constructive observations as a way to improve it. I think that the Historium could be great, but now it misses the mark and is not worth the price.
Immerse yourself in both the VR-experience (at some points quite exhilarating!) and the subsequent tour of the many rooms, following the story of two lovers in medieval Bruges. We just loved it!
A different way to learn about Bruges’ history through the use of technology. You follow a story of the character through different rooms after the VR experience. I have to admit that I expected more of historical facts rather than a story of a character. My opinion was that the city story was at the background. An interesting activity for kids and a bit expensive. The terrance had an excellent view of the Market square.
Good with young children but expensive. It’s all fake history and recorded. If you have small kids it is good but to be honest probably worth a third of the price.
The VR experience. we also found the staff very helpful (I am disabled). It was interesting to see the story of the young apprentice and then go on a trip through medieval Bruges.
Excellent attraction. The VR experience was only 8 minutes but so well done and very immersive. The way the story was told was brilliant.
The VR was basic, but interesting. The main history story, which is a love story that you follow on headphones through various rooms, was pretty naff. When we got to the exhibit, we couldn't move for school parties, so gave up. Apparently, April is the month of school trips (according to the lady on the ticket desk), so perhaps not the best time to come here.
Really good. The VR film is just fabulous and gives a very good picture of Bruges in the early 1500s. The story about Joseph and the girl in the red cloak and green parrot is equally entertainment. Highly recommended - not to be missed
Interesting way to present medieval times. Great for kids. I enjoyed the experience. The virtual reality part was best.
Don’t waste your money on the VR portion. This was not worth the extra money. Walking through the Historium was very under whelming. Going from room to room watching a story play out ( and not a very good story) was not what I expected. The best part was the overlook into the square.
Best experience for teenagers from our experience as a family! They ranked it #1 among all the sites we have visited in Bruge.
It is a waste of time and money. We did not learn anything , they forced in a silly love story which just didn't blend well with the theme. Just 7 rooms and cost us more than 100 Euros for 4 people.
It was good - possibly v good. The interaction was great for us all and I’d recommend buying a combined ticket if you are planning the Belfort Tower also as you’d save money. We ended up in the beer hall afterwards which opens onto a terrace over the main square. It was lovely and the staff were very friendly.
Really good the person here as so helpful selling the tickets and then again with putting the VR on. So realistic. Then we went to the top of the tower it was great.
A day trip to Bruges and sadly the weather hadn't been kind so sought sanctuary in Historium to escape the rain. Given we were there in December to see the Christmas market it was very busy and many other had the same idea to do something inside. The attraction provides an insight into the history of Bruges through a 10minute VR experience which was good and then a guided walk through an interactive show where a group of you move from room to room in unison. It's cleverly done and was interesting (although I still don't understand why they needed the nude bathing !) but at 25 euros per person we didn't think it was great value for money.
The VR portion was different and pretty well done, but the story telling rooms were really cheesy, guess they had to throw in the nude bathing scenes to jazz it up. The best part was the patio after the story, it was a great place for a photo/video of the Bruges market.
We really enjoyed the VR journey, followed by the interactive story that took you on a spellbinding adventure through the city of Bruge, teaching you interesting facts along the way!
The VR experience really brought the Historium visit to life, excellent experience, well run and informative.
Good fun for all ages. There are quite a few stairs so if that’s a concern be prepared. We enjoyed it and it was out of the rain so plan B worked out well
