Itinerary
Visitors from around the world are drawn to to Nism̓aakqin Park in Clayoquot Sound to soak in the mux̣ʷšiƛa (mahkw-shith-ah) hot springs. The natural mineral hot spring pools are a unique feature. The geothermal hot springs cascade down a waterfall into six rocky pools. The pools flow from one level to the next becoming gradually cooler as the fresh spring water is cooled by ocean swells. mux̣ʷšiƛa, which means “steaming from rock”, is the ʕaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht) name for the hot springs. ʕaḥuusʔatḥ knowledge and culture keepers consider the spring water in the pools to have healing properties. Formerly known as Maquinna Marine Park, the area was renamed in 2025 as Nism̓aakqin Park. Nism̓aakqin (nis-mock-kin) means “our land that we care for” in nuučaańuł. There are many places of important cultural, historic and spiritual significance to nuučaańuł (Nuu-chah-nulth) First Nations within Nism̓aakqin Park.
After a 1–1.5 hour boat ride with wildlife viewing opportunities along the way, there’s a 30–45 minute walk along the boardwalk leading into the hot springs. You can enjoy the hot springs and the view for two hours, and then you have the return walk back to the dock for pick-up and another boat ride back home.

Excellent tour with great commentary by Sebastian. Travellers should note that the walk in on the boardwalk is fairly demanding and the hot pools are fairly small and require care when accessing. Water shoes are highly recommended. Excellent experience!!
We couldn’t have asked for a better whale watching experience. We were able to see 4 grey whales within 30 feet of our boat playing with one another and two full fin flips. The otter bay displayed dozens on playful otters and was a delight to see. The hot spring hike was beautiful and the boardwalk really made it feasible for my 70 year old mother who wouldn’t have been able to do it on natural terrain. The springs themselves were pretty crowded despite going in October. Our tour guide said it’s much more crowded during the summer so I’d take that in consideration when booking your tour. Johnny, our tour guide, was really knowledgeable and did everything within his power to make sure we got the most out of the scenic tour. He showed us all the hot spots and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend this tour.
This was a wonderful excursion! Our tour guide, Isaac, was terrific. He was very knowledgeable about the area and sea life. He allowed us time on the journey to the Hot Springs to see grey whales, Sea Otters and Harbour Seals. The springs were amazing. Highly recommend this company and the springs.
We had a brilliant time on the boat tour, we spotted Grey Whales, Sea Otters and a Vancouver black bear😃 Johnny was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife and gave us plenty of time and opportunities to spot things in the water!
Fantastic tour to Hot Springs Cove. Johnny was an excellent guide. Knowledgeable, friendly and fun. The hot springs was a special experience. Highly recommend. Ask for Johnny!
Highly recommend this tour. It was the perfect length of time. Sea otters along the way, nice green hike to the springs. Matthew was an awesome guide too. Really knowledge about marine life. The hot springs were stunning, and have small pools to soak in.
The hotsprings tour was amazing and Captain Mack was a pro! We saw masses of stellar sea lions, a feeding gray whale, and rafts of cute little sea otters floating around on tgeir backs. Loved the rustic hot springs and the forest you walk through to get there was incredible. HUGE trees and also large trees growing out of nursing logs!
This tour left us very disappointed, for $300 per person we expected more than a boat trip to a hot rock pool!. Our Captain was very competent but it would be nice to have some commentary along the way about the local area and culture etc. As for wildlife we saw very little. Admittedly it was winter but we went so fast I could even use my binoculars to look at birds. But the hot pools are farcical, it’s a tiny hot spring that flows over some rocks and creates enough space for 4-6 people Max, our group of 10 plus the next boat meant there was no space for many of us, so we sat on the beach while the privileged 4 people who raced to the pools had the deeper water. I would not recommend this trip for the hot springs. Worst $600 we have spent on a holiday.
Had a great time on the Hot Springs tour. Our guide, Mack, was extremely knowledgeable and found a bunch of wildlife on the way to show us.
We had a great trip to the Hot Springs. Johnny was a great captain and whale and otter spotter! We saw plenty of grey whales, sea otters, seals and a sea lion! Kids loved it.
Our trip to the hot springs with Johnny was amazing! He was super knowledgeable and we were able to see whales, sea lions and otters on the way. Highly recommend!
We booked a trip through Marine Adventure to go to the Maquinna Hot Springs Cove. Our captain Johnny made us feel comfortable on the Blackfish boat, and took us to a few spots where we were able to see seals, eagles and whales, en route to the hot springs. In the shallower waters we saw lots of whales “blowing”. In the deeper water we saw a number of whales playing and one got close to us. The hot springs exceeded my expectations with the walk through an old growth rain forest and a reward of a hot bath. There were a few people when we arrived that were finishing up. There were 4 of us and we had the rocks to ourselves for almost half an hour. It seemed that Johnny works with other captains to space out visitors. I would definitely recommend Marine Adventures located beside the Shelter restaurant and within the Tofino Resort & Marina complex. Thank you Johnny for being an exceptional host and giving us a wonderful experience.
The best way to experience the coast is on the water. I couldn’t believe how many whales we saw! Johnny was so careful and found the right balance between ensuring we could see as much wildlife as possible while not harassing them. Hot Springs Cove is a pretty special experience, but its a bit of a hike to get there (quite a lot of stairs up and down) and the rocks are pretty challenging to climb down into the hot springs pool at low tide. Water shoes are a good idea. It feels like a long time at the pools, but you don’t really have too much time. By the time you get out, its time to start the walk back.
what a wonderful trip. The hot springs were very unique and relaxing. The grey whales on the way there and the Orcas on the way back were added bonuses to the trip. Our boat captain Dave was really down to earth, friendly and knowledgable and really went out of his way to make it a memorable trip. I highly recommend this adventure.
Gorgeous natural hot spring and extremely well cared for trail. Our guide was second to none caring informed and fun. It was time very well spent.
We did the Hot Springs excursion and we absolutely loved it! The pictures don’t represent what we saw and lived during the day! It’s like being in a nature spa!! The boat ride was also incredible, we saw sea otters, whales, orcas, etc!! And the walk in nature to go to the hot springs is also absolutely beautiful!! I really recommend!!!
Excellent guide! We had an excellent day on the excursion with Alex! The boat was very clean and everything was perfect! Alex shared his knowledge about the wildlife and the region with passion and enthusiasm. A passenger scraped her knee and Alex had all the supplies to take care of her. The stop for a swim in a hot spring was great! Thank you, Alex!!!
The tour to the hot springs was very nice. Johnny was a great guide who constantly looked for highlights for us. In the end, it paid off, and we saw otters, dolphins, sea lions, a bald eagle, and even a gray whale. The hot springs, which are about a 30-minute walk from the dock, were also fantastic, and the trip was definitely worth it for us.
