Very kind, friendly and accommodating host, I had messed up my booking (completely my fault) and the owner sorted it out without a fuss. Lovely historic inn; we enjoyed the very comfortable Cromwell suite. Breakfast was wonderful, maybe the best we had on our road trip was through Wales. Very close to everything we wanted to see and do in Hay-on-Wye. Easy parking in the back. Literally, no complaints, we had a lovely stay.

We came here for an evening set meal and we were not disappointed. The Salmon and Pate starters were incredible. And the minute Steak was cooked perfectly. And the two Welsh whiskies were the crowning joy of the evening. Our server Serenity and owner James really looked after us. 5 stars for food!
We have visited The Old Black Lion a few times for drinks and have always felt welcome and found the staff helpful and friendly, but never had the pleasure to stay until recently. We were lucky to get a room at late notice, James, Gill and the rest of the team were their usual great selves providing exceptional service. We had to leave before breakfast and had flasks with us and James insisted on us having them filled with their delicious filter coffee to take on our travels. Didn't have the opportunity to eat here on this occasion but the food looked and smelled amazing. We look forward to returning soon to complete the experience!
We stumbled across the Old Black Lion on a Wednesday night and ended up joining for their ‘Quiz and a Curry’. The quiz was brilliant! Relaxed and a lot of fun. The Thai green chicken curry was absolutely delicious! Excellent service. Quality, local beer. Brilliant atmosphere and wonderful food. I will definitely be back. Thank you!
We decided on a last minute stay in Hay on Wye after a trip to Wales as it was so lovely. The Old Black Lion happened to have one room left, and we were so delighted we stayed. The owner, James, came out from the kitchen to welcome us, and all the rest of the staff were wonderful. I got a great local gin recommendation from them, and there was a great jazz band when we were there. Our room was lovely, perfectly clean and charming. We didn't get food as we already had somewhere booked, but it looked lovely. The location couldn't have been better, maybe two minutes walk to the centre but far enough removed to be quiet. I would happily recommend this inn, all thanks to James and co.!
