The hotel itself is beautiful, historic, and well maintained. Unfortunately, the customer service was disappointing and completely overshadowed the experience. We are a family of five (two adults, two 12-year-olds, and one 9-year-old). At check-in, we were told that the hotel’s policy only allows four people per room. We explained that our children are used to sharing beds and that we have never encountered this issue at other hotels. There was no willingness to accommodate us or even discuss possible alternatives. We were simply told that “it’s the policy” and were required to pay for a second room. What made this even more frustrating was discovering that our suite actually had a king bed, a double sofa bed, and a single sofa bed—enough sleeping space for five people. When we returned to reception to ask if there had been a misunderstanding, we were again told that the room could only accommodate four people because of hotel policy, even though the physical space clearly allowed otherwise. We were then told that the additional room was necessary because the double sofa bed was considered suitable for only one person. As someone who is Portuguese, it doesn’t make any sense, felt like the policy was being applied in an unnecessarily rigid way rather than with any consideration for our family’s circumstances. We were even encouraged to have our children sleep alone in the second room while the parents stayed separately. As parents, that was never an option for us. How we choose to arrange our family’s sleeping arrangements should be our decision. Another disappointing experience happened at the pool. We asked if there was an indoor pool, and we were told there was. We were informed that swimming caps were required and were asked if we had any. We replied that we did not, and the staff immediately began preparing the paperwork for the caps without mentioning there would be a charge. Only after we specifically asked whether there was a fee were we told that the €4 per cap charge would be billed to our room. It wasn’t the €4 itself that bothered us—it was the lack of transparency. Guests should be informed of charges upfront, not after the process has already started. Luxury is not only about beautiful buildings and elegant rooms. It’s also about hospitality, flexibility, transparency, and making guests feel welcome. Sadly, those qualities were missing here. While the facilities are lovely, the rigid policies, lack of accommodation, and poor customer service left us disappointed. We would not choose to stay here again.

IF YOU WANT A VERY PORTUGUESE EXPERIENCE IN LUXURY, STAY HERE!! This was one of the best hotel/resort/spa experience my husband and I have ever had! I'm STILL on a cloud after our three night stay for our wedding anniversary. EVERYTHING was top rate. The staff throughout the hotel was kind, caring and helpful. They have free parking, which is important in the old center of town. They will store your bags if you arrive before check-in. They have a fabulous breakfast area for continental breakfast, which is very good and there is a lot of variety. Since it was our anniversary, I added a nice add-on they offered that provided a bottle of espumante, chocolate covered strawberries and pretty flower petals on and around our bed. It was beautiful and we enjoyed it a lot. We went swimming in the indoor, heated pool. As I write, it is January, and too cold for the two outdoor swimming pools, one shallow for children that has a slide. The indoor pool was wonderful! We also had experience with the spa. I booked an 80 minute massages for both of us which includes a full body massage, full body salt scrub, a dip in the oversized tub in the treatment room, to wash the salt off, plus a mini facial. I am a retired Massage Therapist. I used to do similar treatments. I know what is good and what isn't. Both my husband and I experienced one of the best massages/treatments we have ever had. I HIGHLY recommend their spa. The overall experience at this resort was just incredible. Again, if you want to have a VERY Portuguese experience in a luxurious hotel, this is the place. We are expats now living in a town north of Braga. We can't wait to go back. ❤️❤️❤️
Location is great, service is excellent. The breakfast was really high quality. The cookers doing omelettes or fried eggs right in front of you were amazing, specially the Brazilian guy. Really friendly staff. The architecture of the old Catholic Hospital is breathtaking. The only downside for us was the 'Spa'. Pool was super cold. And, being a ancient Catholic place (main reason why we chose this hotel), why on Earth do you have buddish/Hindu statues/pictures on the spa??? Sorry, but it is horrible. Be coherent and remove them.
Staff are lovely, however, promoting tourist activities and providing a map without asking would be beneficial. The balcony has no outdoor furniture, unable to use the balcony on floors other than first floor which had outdoor furniture. The restaurant for dinner was excellent, outdoor pools extremely cold which seems to be a European thing. Overall a great hotel and would recommend!
Front desk need to get retrained on how to deal with tourists. And they should know how to speak better English and better Portuguese. We had to ask for local maps and hotel map we found it very difficult to navigate. We weren't told that you have to reserve to go to the indoor pool they lack explaining many things the Hotel have to offer. Other than that Hotel was beautiful. And the breakfast buffet was great
