There's no better way to understand Bordeaux than through its markets, its vendors, and the ingredients that have shaped its cuisine for centuries, and this 3-hour private tour is built around exactly that.
You'll begin with the iconic Marché des Capucins, known affectionately as "Les Capus" by locals. This covered market has been feeding the people of Bordeaux since the 1700s, and it remains one of the most authentic places to capture the city's essence. Inside, your expert guide will introduce you to the vendors themselves- the fishmongers, cheesemongers, and butchers whose stalls have anchored the market for generations, and explain which ingredients and dishes form the true backbone of Bordelaise cuisine. Along the way, you'll taste a thoughtful, ever-changing selection of the region's most emblematic flavours, perhaps a delicate puit d'amour pastry, ripe seasonal fruit, or the famous oysters from the nearby Arcachon basin.
From the market, the tour continues into the surrounding streets of the historic Saint-Michel neighbourhood. Your guide will draw your attention to key landmarks along the way such as the Grosse Cloche, one of the last surviving gates of Bordeaux's medieval ramparts, and the soaring Porte Cailhau, and take you to a series of speciality food shops where you’ll discover how Bordeaux's restaurant and food scene continues to evolve, blending centuries-old tradition with a new generation of chefs and producers making their mark on the city. As the tour continues, the tastings do too: while the exact dishes will vary by day and by season, you’ll typically have the chance to try local charcuterie and cheese paired with a glass or two of Bordeaux wine. No visit to the city would be complete without a canelé, and you'll have the chance to sample this quintessential Bordeaux pastry as well.
Equal parts culinary journey and history lesson, this tour is designed for travellers who want to taste their way through Bordeaux while understanding the stories, people, and history behind every bite.
