About Activity
Bordeaux is one of the largest fine wine regions in the world, home to thousands of individual châteaux and producers. There is evidence of the wine trade in the area since Roman times, and the union of 1152 between Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future Henry II of England in 1152 ushered in centuries of English rule and a robust demand for Bordeaux wine that established the city as a major export hub. Since then, Bordeaux's identity has been inseparable from wine, and there's no better way to understand that relationship than by walking the very streets where it all took shape. Our wine and history tour combines a scenic stroll through the historic wine merchants' district with a guided tasting to help you appreciate every nuance of Bordeaux's wonderful vintages.
On your private 3-hour wine tour, you will:
- Get the lowdown on Bordeaux wine with a local expert guide;
- Stroll the Chartrons district as you get acquainted with the city’s rich winemaking history;
- See the oldest wine merchant’s home in Bordeaux and find out about how the wine trade has evolved across the centuries;
- Pass by the site of the first US consulate overseas and hear about Thomas Jefferson’s time Bordeaux, and his fondness for the local wines;
- Step inside a local wine bar to taste a carefully chosen selection of wines;
- Learn about the key characteristics of Bordeaux wine and how the climate affects its terroirs;
- Sample 3 styles of wine accompanied by food pairings such as foie gras, cheese and charcuterie.
This private three-hour tour begins in Chartrons, the historic wine merchant district just north of the city centre, where a knowledgeable local guide will bring the neighbourhood's layered history to life. As you stroll past the elegant hôtels particuliers built by generations of wine traders, your guide will point out the oldest wine merchant's house still standing in Bordeaux and explain how the trade evolved from its medieval roots through the golden age of the négociants, when Dutch, English, and Irish merchants settled here and built the international networks that carried Bordeaux wine across the world.
Along the way, you'll pass the site of the first American consulate established outside the United States, and hear the story of Thomas Jefferson's time in the city and his enduring fondness for its wines, a connection that helped shape American taste for Bordeaux long before it became a household name.
From there, the tour settles into its second act: a seated tasting at a local wine bar, where you'll sample three distinct Bordeaux blends, each chosen to showcase the diversity of the region's terroirs and winemaking styles. Your guide will walk you through the key grape varieties, the influence of soil and climate on the wines in your glass, and what sets a Left Bank Cabernet-driven blend apart from a Merlot-forward wine from the Right Bank. Each pour is accompanied by thoughtfully chosen dishes designed to highlight the pairing, often including foie gras, artisan cheese, and charcuterie, along with other exceptional local products depending on the season.
Part historical walk, part immersive tasting, this tour is designed for curious wine lovers who want to go beyond the bottle and understand why Bordeaux earned its reputation as a world wine capital, and how that reputation, in turn, shaped the city itself.
