Very nice town and spectacular salt cathedral. Guide was unfortunately not up to the level. Heavily overpriced excursion

Villa de Leyva is a Colombian city in northeastern Bogotá. It is known for its whitewashed colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and the great Plaza Mayor. In the square is the church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the 17th century and the House of the First Congress of the United Provinces, where the new laws were drafted after the independence of 1812.
The chocolateria of Villa de Leyva was created on September 13, 2013, important: September 13 is celebrated as the international day of chocolate ... but every day is a good day to enjoy and be happy! In commemoration of that date two years later on September 13, 2015, the small museum is created and in 2017 Chef Cacao is created and the exhibition is expanded, 2018 appears the Hotel - SPA Mansion Chocolate Museum Mansion, boutique and jewelry Chocolate Woman, the bakery and pastry Choco Pan. The Chocolate Museum has organic cocoa crops in Pauna - Boyacá and in 2018 an experimental cocoa crop is made in Villa de Leyva, in 2019 the online store is created. In 2020 another expansion of the exhibition will take place and the creation of Chocolate Park is planned.
The Ain Karim vineyard is located at KM 5 of the Sutamarchán - Santa Sofía highway and is a beautiful terrain, with an artificial lake and a horizon planted with vines. A guided visit can be made in which they explain the process of cultivation and benefit of the grape, as well as the fermentation and processing of the wine. In the end you can taste one of their wines, marketed under the Marqués de Villa de Leyva brand, with the help of an expert who will help you get the most out of the matter.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is declared First Wonder of Colombia and considered one of the most remarkable architectural and artistic achievements of the Colombian architecture. Enjoy an interesting tour to Zipaquirá visiting the Salt Cathedral and discovering the Main Squares of the colonial town.

Ideal if you have limited time to do two main trips from Bogota in one day (although it is a long day). Bonus was the terracotta house. Excellent tour guide and driver. Lunch was excellent as was the stop for a traditional Colombian breakfast (not included in the price)
My tour guide Lorina and Emilio our transport operator were such a wonderful team . The drive was spectacular and they did their best to accommodate my requests . I truly had a lovely time . Thank you and will recommend you to my friends visiting Bogotá.
Camila was such a great tour guide, we had so much fun with her, also got a bunch of interesting facts and insights about Villa de Leyva, the Cathedral and Colombia in general. We actually wanted to schedule another tour with her, because she was fantastic. Guillermo, the driver, was fun as well and provided guidance. They both made sure we had a great time and enjoyed every part of the tour as much as possible. Had to do some changes to the schedule, but all of it was worth it. Loved it! Cheers from Panama and Puerto Rico. ✨
We visited some lovely country towns. However, we had booked a private tour with an English-speaking guide. We ended up in a tiny car with a tall driver who had her seat so far back we were squashed for the entire 13 hour tour. Although the trip started at 6am, we had to ask to stop for breakfast and were not offered water (supposed to be included) until 5.45pm. Lunch was below average. Neither the driver nor the tour guide wore masks while on the tour, nor did they offer to wear them when we did. The tour guide had very little local knowledge. Given the cost of the tour, it was very poor value.
We very very disappointed with the arrangements of this tour. We booked a private vehicle for the two of us. We paid a premium for this and it was not worth it. The car was a small Renault and as the driver was tall, the back seat was very cramped as there was no leg room. My wife and I took turns to sit in that side with our legs squashed. As there was 9 hours of driving in the day it was not much fun. The English speaking guide didn’t know anything about where we were going. He simply spoke English so he could translate for the driver who actually knew the area. Finally neither the driver nor the tour guide wore masks. There were no protocols for Covid. We wore ours all day. Although water was included we were finally offered one bottle to share at 545 pm The tour itself is interesting and the towns in Boyaca are lovely and the salt cathedral is amazing. But given the price and 13.5 hours in a small car, we wouldn’t recommend it or this company.
We had a really lovely time on this day trip from Bogotá. We were eager to see some of the historic towns and the countryside surrounding Colombia's capital, and this option did not disappoint. Be forewarned that this is a long day trip, beginning at sunrise and extending to well after sunset. Lorena, our tour guide, and Miguel, our driver, were super kind and helpful to us at every step. They're working very hard at an over 12-hour day, and deserve high praise. ¡Muchas gracias, amigos!
My father and I wanted to go on a day trip including the Salt Cathedral with an english speaking guide. Lorena (the guide) & Vitelmo (the driver) were absolutely wonderful. Lorena was informative and engaging; she shared a lot about Colombian history (at the sites and during the drive) and we had a lot of fun chatting with her at the vineyard as well. Vitelmo was an excellent driver - he drove us through very scenic routes and got us to all the locations in a timely way. This trip is a great way to fit a bunch of sites into one day - highly recommended!
We had a great day with the guide and the driver. Visiting yineyard, salt cathedral and Villa de Leyva
I really enjoy the tours. I always think that wen I travel is not only the place I visit is also the experience to know other people's. Our tour guides Cindy and Guillermo was the best. We was several hours in the bus and I really don't notice because Cindy and Guillermo was very friendly and professional and we talk with them during the meantime we was transport and the hours go fast the good company. Cindy very professional guide us and answer all the question during the tour and we really enjoy. She also take to us the best pictures. I highly recomend the tour but you need to take in consideration is a long trip.
Driver and guide were on time to pick us up, they were very friendly and fun. The car is a bit on the small side and not very comfortable. The tour is very long and tiring but worth to do if you have limited time or prefer like me to stay in the same hotel in Bogota. Villa de Leyva is a very charming town with many colonial buildings. You can walk in the streets and of course on the main square. However time to walk is limited due to the whole program. Nice is also the visit to the Terra-cotta house and the winery. Afterwards there is a long drive to the salt cathedral, nice experience but not the highlight. For me the highlights were Villa de Leyva and the landscape. If you have a lot of time you might prefer to do this trip in 2-3 days, but again I can recommend this tour to people short of time.
Took this day trip after arriving in Colombia / Bogotá the night before. Prompt hotel pick up at 6am. Somewhat surprised to see the small car that my wife, daughter and I would be travelling in. Our guide spoke reasonable but limited English, which resulted in some long pauses in our conversation. Saw plenty of sites with the highlight being the Salt Cathedral. Villa de Leyva stop was far too brief, approx. 10 minutes. A long day as we arrived back at our hotel at approx. 9pm. An expensive outing but we were able to see a lot of the country northeast of Bogotá, so all-in-all a worthwhile day trip.
The tour guides were awesome!!!!!! Shout out to Cindy❤️ The scenery and everything was perfect for me and my kids 🙂
It was a great way to see quite a bit in a day. Guillermo was a wonderful driver and felt very comfortable with him behind the wheel. Cindy spoke great English and was kind enough to help me work on my Spanish during our down time. The tour was packed with stops, history and culture. Cindy did a really nice job of covering a lot of the questions I had and adding additional context around the stops. It was a long day but never felt slow or rushed, it was paced really nicely. I would highly recommend for anyone looking to see a couple unique places outside of Bogota.
Our guide Paula arrived promptly at our hotel to pick us up . Caesar was a good and careful driver. Paula spoke v good English . They took us to see the blue wells which the Muisca Indians used for Astronomy. They were beautiful . Also took us to a Dominican Monastery . Both wells and monastery were near Villa de Leyva. Also took us to the Terracotta House which an architect designed and built in 2000. It was a fun place to see . After that we went into Villa de Leyva to see this Colonial Town with its large central square . We had an hour for lunch which wasn’t included in the tour . After that we had a three hour drive to Zipaquirá to the Salt Cathedral . We had an hour and a half there . It was v interesting . I’m giving this tour 4* instead of 5* because we could have done with a more comfortable car with air con for the amount of time we had to spend in the car . Also lunch could have been include for the very heavy price - £ 100 pp .
Paola was our guide for a wonderful day outside the city. She was really fun to be with and was very knowledgeable. The places we visited were interesting. We would have liked to spend a little more time in Villa de Leya but it was a pretty long day the way it was.
It was a very long, poorly planned and quite expensive trip. The tour was rescheduled , started at 8 instead of 6am. We got a text message evening before about this change. The first stop visit in the Salt Cathedral was with audioguide, without any suggestions from our guide. On the way to Villa de Leyva trafic was quite dense, so we arrived pretty late. We decided to skip part of the planned tour, because we did not want to drive at night. If we start at 6, we would have some buffer. At the end we managed to see only the main square, had a very quick lunch, and visited the terracota house. We drove the whole day to spend 1,5h in Villa de Leyva with unprepared guide. Additionally, our tour guide was poorly prepared to this task, uninformed and not really communicative.
It’s a long trip from 6 in the morning until 6 in the evening, but it’s worth every minute. First a short stop on the side of the road for breakfast, then the visit to the surprisingly small bridge of the battle of Boyacá. Villa de Leyva is definitely worth it and the 5 lakes not far from there give you an opportunity for a nice walk. The cathedral of Zipaquirá is quite impressive - the lighting is extremely well done and helps to enhance the experience. We were on the road with a driver and a wonderful guide. Fredy was loads of fun and very knowledgeable. He is also fluent in Norwegian (!) and has a great taste of music as he is a musician himself. As there was another couple who had booked the tour we were asked whether it was ok to share the tour. Therefor lunch in a parrillada was included. The only suggestion I would have is a better choice of restaurants. Otherwise it was brillant and I can only recommend this tour.
Firstly, this is a LONG day but go! We were prepared with extra water, snacks, etc. Driving in Columbia is an adventure but our driver Carlos was safe - we were happy HE was driving. There are often potholes, detours, traffic to contend with. Our guide Jhon Fredi spoke good English and looked after us. We enjoyed his company and his positive attitude. Villa de Leyva is a heavily cobbled colonial Town painted in white with tiled roofs. It was busy with cars and people but worth our time. The Terracotta House is a masterpiece! Such a work of art. Fred Flintstone would have loved it. Convent Ecco Homo is a beautifully restored 1650-era monastary with lovely grounds, chapels, ceilings, relics and antiques. The "Blue Lakes" stop gave us a chance to walk a couple of kilometers in a peaceful pine wooded area around a group of six small lakes/ponds. After a fantastic late lunch of grilled meats we made our last stop of the day at the Salt Cathedral. What a unique and moving place to see!! Absolutely worth you time and effort. These salt caverns and sculptures aren't as rustic as those in Poland but expansive, modern, beautiful art.
Very good tour and itinerary. The guide and the driver were excellent. A lot of interest spots were shown. And interesting stories were told :)
Carlos our driver was full of information and the tour guide was so friendly and helpful by the end of the day we thought we knew them for years.Great experience.
This was the best tour we took in Colombia. We did a four person private tour. We loved our guides Carlos Alberto and John Freddy. Full of knowledge, friendly and attentive. Showed us their beautiful country with pride and shows they enjoyed it as much as we did
Insgesamt sehr empfehlenswert.
Lots of cars but the city is cute. The church exceeded my expectations. It's just wonderful. The guide was particularly kind.
The tour was great. Good organization, good duration, good explanations... The driver was very good and the guide was very captivating. Villa de Leyva was a bit short, considering the time it takes to get there. And I would have preferred to see the terracotta house rather than the vines (but that's a personal point of view). On the other hand, the salt cathedral was the big surprise. I had heard about it, but the magic was beyond all expectations. Thank you again for this exciting and enjoyable day.
Camilla and Guillermo were super friendly and helpful in explaining everything about the history of the places. It's worth the tour.
During our trip through Bogota and Medellin we hired with them the services of transfers and several excursions, that is why we have a fairly complete opinion of their services. From Spain we were able to manage all services efficiently. Liliana was the person who managed all the services and always kept an eye on everything working like a Swiss watch. AIRPORT-HOTEL TRANSFER SERVICE AND VICE VERSA: the services they provided were super efficient. From the first moment we landed we were in direct contact with them to inform us of the driver's name, meeting place, model of the car and license plate. Data that conveys a lot of security and professionalism. In all cases we used this Service were super punctual, and that we had to catch transfers at untimely hours (03:00 am, etc) (The contracted transfer services were in the cities of Bogota and Medellin) EXCURSIONS: with Transfers and Tours we made several excursions. In Bogota we did a city tour and we also did Cathedral of Salt and Zipaquirá. In Medellín we did the city tour+ graffiti tour of Commune 13, Guatapé and Peñol and Adventure Day in Rio Claro. All these tours were group tours and despite this, the professionalism of the guides was impeccable. At the end of the trip, we had the opportunity to make a more personalized private tour (it is one of their services) and we could know Ráquira and Villa de Leyva in a more exclusive way. In this case we were accompanied by a driver and a guide only for us. GUIDES AND DRIVERS: in all excursions the guides were professionals as well as the drivers. However, we connect a lot with Cindy, Guillermo, Darío and Xiomara very professional guides and drivers who take great care of the customer, making you feel tucked in and taken care of.
Service is excellent! Very attentive Juliana and Guillermo at all times!! I recommend them to 💯. We stayed for 5 days
Beautiful trip, amazing, competent very professional guide - Cindy, thank you very much! Recommended to ALL!
Very interesting this tour, lasted about 10 hours. We left at 6am from the hotel in Candelaria, we stopped at some monuments on the road, we stopped at Villa de Leyva. We visited the village, church, squares, souvenir shops. We went to a winery, with a tasting. We followed to Zipaquirá, on a long road, about 1 hour drive. In Zipaquira we made a city tour, square and we went to the Cathedral of Salt. Fantastic! The visit is long, 1 h, with audio guide. We took a lot of photos is amazing, the images are beautiful, the formations are breathtaking, with games of light and music.
We loved the walk. We went on a private tour, we were picked up at the hotel at 6am, we went to Villa de Leyva- historic site, salt cathedral in Zipaquirá, Ain Karin vineyard with Marquis wine tasting of Villa de Leyva, Terracota, castle Morocco and monument to independence. They were very professional, polite, helpful throughout the trip. It's worth it, I'll indicate to friends and family.
At the salt mines of Zipaquira you will walk in galleries opening onto huge salt rock cathedrals: impressive At Villa de Leyva walk at the pleasure of Calle and Carrera , a compass or a GPS help
It was an excellent experience I give a 10 out of 10 punctuality Service the people who accompanied me on the tour the food an excellent Service recommended 100%
We took a tour with my parents to Zipaquirá and Villa de Leyva. It was more than just a tour. Excellent service and friendly driver and guide unmatched. Besides going to Zipaquirá, we were in Ubaté, Chiquinquirá, Ráquira and places on the outskirts of Villa de Leyva. I would hire the Service again another time and recommend them without hesitation.
