Jorge our guide spoke fluent English and was very engaging and helpful. He provided a small history & geographical lesson and also was knowledgeable about plant conservation and biodiversity of Colombia. He was extremely patient and polite. I would recommend this experience.

The tour was great! The nature there is beautiful, the hike is difficult because of the altitude, but it's worth it! Our guide was Katy, she was super attentive and communicative!
I had a great time on my tour with my guide, Jorge. It took around 1.5hrs hiking to reach the top where you can see the lagoons. With the high altitude the hike is a little draining but the scenery is worth it and is beautiful.
The hike and the views are really impressing. My guide Myra provided a lot of information on the fauna and the flora of the paramo and was sensible to the issue of the altitude (bit of pression in my ears in my case).
Daniel was a fantastic guide with good ornithological knowledge. The Sumapaz Páramo is a spectacular natural area worth a visit.
Overall we enjoyed this tour. The scenery was breathtaking and unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We did some bird watching which was a bonus. The guide Daniel was kind and knowledgeable about birds, but his English was poor. The 2 hour drive to the trailhead was rough and bumpy made worse by a cramped and uncomfortable van with bad suspension. The driver was very kind and safe though. The TripAdvisor listing is misleading as we did not actually enter the National Park, hiking from a farm up into private land at the edge of the park. So the “What’s Included” segment saying entry fees are covered is not true. The hike was 1 hour and 45 minutes up and took us to a beautiful lookout at 12,300 feet, so the gain in altitude was a bit less than 2,000 feet. The trail was slightly muddy, not difficult, but required good balance as it was very rutted and a bit rocky. Bring your own water and snacks, and layer up because the temperature changed from the 60’s and sunny to the low 40’s with wind and misty rain.
We walked into the beautiful Paramo de Sumapaz, with our super guide Alexander! The Paramo is an unique ecosystem in the world. I definitely recommend it.
Amazing! Steven was an excellent guide. He was knowledgeable, patient, and took the experience to the top. The hike itself is not for the weak— pack waterproof shoes and prepare for a long, treacherous journey through deep mud and up steep inclines. The views along the way and at the top make it all worth it. I highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Bogota and wishing to take a day out of the city to appreciate nature and one of the most unique biomes in the world! Big thanks again to our guide Steven for making the trip extra special.
Amazing day with Alexander in the Paramount. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about showing us the fauna and flora. Would definitely recommend to all tourists willing to discover a unique environment.
We got lucky with beautiful weather, and the tour was fantastic. Our guide Diego was friendly and passionate about showing us the páramo. It is a beautiful landscape just a couple hours outside of the city, and a great way to see a completely different part of bogota. Would definitely recommend
Excellent guide, José and Omar are incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic. Take a tour with them, it’s a must have experience.
The views and ecosystem were really unique!! The guide was knowledgeable about Bogotá and the environment. My only small wish would be a bit more enthusiasm from the guide, but that is all!! :)
We did the Sumapaz Páramo hike with Gran Colombia who were able to accommodate our needs on relatively short notice. Liz was our guide and Carlos our driver; they were both terrific. It was a very challenging hike, with the altitude going up and slippery loose rocks and narrow paths going down but it was worth it to be able to take in such an enchanting environment. Even if you have some light rain and fog like we did, the frailejones are a sight to behold! Bring warm layers (including rain gear and waterproof hiking boots) and water/snacks. Hiking poles were provided which came in handy. If you are prone to motion sickness, the roads to the páramo are quite curvy so just something to keep in mind. While it sounds like this hike and páramo don't get quite as much attention from visitors as other attractions, if you have some time while in Bogotá and love the outdoors, contact Gran Colombia and go for it!
Absolutely loved this hike. The views and paramo was unlike anything I had ever hiked. Our guide, Luis, was knowledge but super down to earth and very fun. I would definitely recommend this tour to get out of the city of Bogota and experience some of the countryside.
Seeing the paramos was such an interesting and enjoyable experience. And it was nice to not have to worry about transportation or reservations for Sumapaz. Our guide, José, was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable about the paramo ecosystem. I definitely recommend this as a day tour from Bogota.
Excellent tour and very well prepared guide. Francisco answered any and all questions we asked. His answers were always thorough. His demeanor always full of patience and consideration. Nibardo, the local guide, was also a wealth of information. We especially enjoyed the agua de panela with arepa he had waiting for us at the end of the tour as well as the visit with him and his cat Ceniza.
My partner and I Loved this rejuvenating hike so much. Our guide Louis was very punctual, informative and friendly. He even let us choose the pace we wanted to go at. The driver was very kind as well. I loved the authentic Colombian food as it was fresh and healthy.
This trip was great. Our guide, Francisco, was so friendly and knowledgeable. The landscape was really unique and not something any of us had seen before. Since it was a private tour we were able to go at our own speed which was really helpful since most of us struggled with the altitude. Overall the hike itself is not too difficult, but be prepared for the increase in elevation from Bogota. Bring layers even if you think you don't need them.
Great Tour and I can definitely recommend it. The hike was amazing and you could see beautiful nature. The organization was great. Our guide Sergio was very helpfully and told us a lot about the nature and Colombia.
I had a great time on this hike with Liz! This hike can be challenging at some points and, depending on the weather, muddy. I highly recommended bringing good hiking boots and layers. The landscape is stunning! We were the only ones hiking that day and I felt like we were on another planet! Highly recommend this tour!
Wow, this is an incredible place! I felt I was in an other world! Francisco was my guide for 8h, he could explain all about this ecosystem and the history of Colombia, he was really friendly, full of good energy. You start by walking through this ecosystem for +|- 8km, the hike is not difficult, then you have a warm drink at the farmer house. And for lunch we went to eat at a local restaurant! It was super good !
This was a unique adventure that I highly recommend for other travelers! The Sumapaz Preserve and Paramo landscape were beautiful, and we felt privileged to be able to explore there. We found a miraculous peace and calm outside of Bogota and enjoyed the contrast to city life for the day. Our guide--Luciani--was excellent. He was very knowledgable and super passionate about the area and about his work. Our local expert--Don Nevardo--grew up in the area and shared its unique features with us in a way that made us feel special. Our driver navigated the ins and outs of Bogota with efficiency and ease--even through significant post-hike rush hour traffic--and shared his insider knowledge of the neighborhoods we drove through. We brought water and snacks, but Luciani made sure we had the opportunity to get these things before our hike (and yes, you will want them!). We had wonderful weather but prepared for heavy rain in case. Our lunch was great and really hit the spot after our hike.
This was a once in a lifetime hiking adventure! I really enjoyed my tour with Ivonne and our local guide. I learned so much about the paramos and their unique ecosystem. Highly recommend this tour for anyone outdoorsy who wants to see a unique Colombian landscape!
Amazing tour through the santuario. The ride was pleasant already since we went through neighborhoods you wouldn’t normally come as a tourist. The guide was amazing and we had a great laugh. Along with a local farmer he took us to the most beautiful places. Afterwards we had a delicious lunch at the family-parilla of the driver. Great day!
Ok, my guide Luis said this was the third worst weather he’s seen on this hike. Pouring rain, wind, and basically hiking along (and in) a trail that has turned to a mini river. Despite all of that, I had a freaking blast! My boots are still soaked days later! Luis was such a great guide - from sharing knowledge to actually connecting personally. Seriously such a great time! Didn’t really have any issues with the altitude either, which was my biggest concern. So fun!
This was an incredible hike that is not to be missed! Even though the weather never cleared up, walking through the clouds to see all the frailejones and other plants/animals was magical. My guides Jorge Castiblanco from Gran Colombia and the farmer whose land we initially entered through were both wonderful and informative. We were able to easily book a private tour for two the night before we left after our other company cancelled on us twice last minute. Highly recommend this tour instead of DIY'ing it as we definitely would have gotten lost in Sumapaz and also would have taken a long time to get to by bus.
Daniel was a great guide and the páramo was beautiful. Would recommend to anybody, hike was not too difficult even with altitude
If you are in Bogota and look for a best nature hike with magnificent views and very fresh air, don't hesitate to book this amazing tour. Moderate trail to the top of Paramo area where you will see one of the most important ecosystem in the area with unforgettable views of the lakes, mountains and landscapes. Remember, if you want the best experience, please ask the company about Luis. He is your best guide to this trip and all other trips. Luis is a true human, hardworker, nice person, rich in information, so professional and he will definitely become your friend. Thanks for Gran Colombia and their manager Juan . Very special appreciation to Mr Luis, the best guide and amigo in Bogota. Highly recommended for nature & short hiking lovers.
We had a wonderful trip to the Sumapaz Paramo with a stop at a local market. David was very knowledgeable and we had some great conversations all day. We had an awesome driver and local guide who both helped make the day very special. Our post-hike lunch prepared by the local guide's family was delicious! All in all it was a really great day!
Our tour of Sumapaz was one of the best days of our trip! Our guide, Dave, was fantastic providing us an in-depth insight into the culture, history, and environment of this very unique location. The altitude and wetness breed very interesting plant life and the mountain views were amazing. The food and hospitality of the local family was delightful as well. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Bogota.
I can highly recommend a day in the paramos of sumapaz with this tour. It is a wonderful, magic place to see. Even if it's not sunny, the place is breathtaking if u love nature and want to escape from the city. I spent the day with my private guide David. He catches me up at the hotel and we had already a blast on the ride. He knows a lot about kolumbia, bogota and well the paramos. Ask and he will tell u :) we catched some food on the way to bring it to the locals. While we walked they cooked our lunch. Wow... Amazing and very authentic. The walk is about 2 to 3 hours and u should bring good shoes and a rain jacket. Check it out it's definitely with it 😊
Informative and authentic tour through the moorland of Sumapaz - the traditional breakfast at a local farmer‘s home, our enthousiastic guide Mateo and the fascinating landscape made our day
so I dint complete the tour due to personal reasons but I must say the views were spectacular. the guides were incredible
The páramo is a really unique ecological environment, and if you're in Bogotá, visiting it is a great way to spend the day. Our guide, Luis, was fantastic, and we were really lucky with the weather. Given that the hike is at high altitude in the mountains, the weather can change quickly, so come prepared for cold and rain, and but sun and heat. The food included with the tour was great, the scenery was amazing, and we had a lot of fun.
It was really nice, the great organization and preparation from the agency made a really good experience. Besides that the landscape is amazing. I really enjoyed all the information given by our guide and that there were no waiting times, everything as schedule.
We found Juan's agency on the internet. We ended up on 2 teips for 350 euroa both. The first was this ascent in the național park paramo de sumapaz and the second at Hamcienda Coloma. The guide was extraordinarily well prepared. His name îs Mateo and we were friends. Go equipped with boots, thick clothes and the weather changes from hour to hous. Don't forget a rain cap. We were a companie on our trip by the driver Miguel and the owner of The farm where we eat : Osvaldo. This wife prepared us an delicios good mel and waited us with Coca leaf Tea. Time : 0800 pick-up From hotel în Bogora and ai 1700 we are come back.
Review for Sumapaz Hike We really enjoyed our adventure with Mateo! The hike was great and the landscape unreal! Mateo explained a lot about the Paramo and Colombia during the tour which was really helpful understanding the country. The family where we had lunch was very comforting and friendly. Our driver Carlos also did a great job riding our minivan offroad xD We have an average to good fitness level and did not have any problems during the hike. Be prepared to get very wet and it's cold up there. We were doing the hike in sneakers and softshell jackets which was okay. But I would advice to bring a rain poncho or a really good rain jacket. Also dry socks and dry shoes to leave in the car would help for the ride back to town. Regards Jens
Our travel-agency guide Luis & driver picked us up from hotel; they used the ride time to give us preparative information. All-together making the ride (within the local traffic standards) to the hiking base quite relaxing. There we met a local farmer & his wife who prepared us further by giving us "aguapanela con queso". Off we went to the hike on sunny weather; gradually we realized how rapidly cold & wet the area could get. Be sure to bring _waterproof_ shoes & garments as it could get rainy & windy very fast. The vegetation, view from the top & uniqueness of lands were well worth this strenuous hike. We gained ~ 2,400 feet on wet, rocky ground. Back on the base the local farmer's wife had prepared us lunch. We enjoyed greatly the food & their hospitality. Hopefully more of us will follow & the local ecotourism prosper.
Great day trip and good workout. My wife and I really enjoyed the experience. Our guide Jose Miguel was knowledgeable and his English was great. The hike is through private property so Gran Colombia tours is your only option for visiting this beautiful piece of nature. Highly recommend! Not suitable for small children.
Wow! What an experience we had. We booked the trip only a day and a half ahead of time, but this was plenty for the hike and accommodations with locals whom all were gracious enough to help us. Our guide for the day was David - he is incredibly knowledgeable of his people and country, demonstrates a clear passion for nature, and is a joy to talk to. My wife and I listened to him all day. First, we started in the south of Bogota to grab some food from the local market, and headed out further into the mountains after. A farming family in the village greeted us for arepa and other treats to get us ready for the hike. After, we took the trek to about 3700 meters of elevation to view the Páramo at its highest point locally, which was breathtaking. To wrap up the day, we finished with a perfect Colombian Mountain meal made out of fresh ingredients. Saying the experience was divine isn’t doing it enough justice! If you come to Bogota, you must do this. It is beyond worth it. Open your mind and journey into the Páramo!
This was an incredible trip. Gran Colombia Tours (and guide Mateo) made it easy - picked group up at hotel, picked up ingredients for lunch at market and drove to local guide's house at launching point. Then headed off for hike, which was incredible. The moorelands were unlike anything we had seen elsewhere. Spectacular views where we were completely alone with nature - didn't see anyone else on the whole 4-5 hr hike. Was of moderate level of difficulty - and that was after having had a couple weeks at higher altitude in Bogota. Came back after hike to enjoy great, local meal at guide's house. This was without a doubt the best activity of the whole trip.
We arranged the trip a couple of days beforehand, a private tour for the whole family. We were picked up on time, at 7:30am on a Sunday and drove to Sumapaz. The start is at ca 3000 meters, perhaps more and the walk takes you to 3600-3700 m. The landscape and the plants are impressive. I know many, many valleys of the Venezuela, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Peruvian Andes and I must say that it is indeed an area of exceptional beauty and nature! Our guide Mateo was very enthusiastic, explained the importance of the area and talked about the culture in good English, which made the whole experience more valuable. He gave us to some Colombian indigenous mixes including tobacco paste and coca leaves which was interesting (and no, it does not get you high, it is like having a espresso at the most) and he used this 'ritual' as an excuse to explain us and our foreign friends a little bit about the beliefs of the indigenous Colombians. The walk is not strenuous, but it is still a hike - and in altitude - so if you have issues with your knees etc, better stay in the farm (very humble, not luxurious farm) where you can read, chat with the locals. The drive there was also interesting because you cross all southern Bogota. It is not pretty, but it is a reality that we often ignore by staying always north of Bolivar square. In summary, very worth it. Go there! If you aren't sure because of the cost.... then save on beers and pay your tour to Sumapaz with these guys. Totally worth it. Down sides... not many, all worked perfectly fine, just don't expect a luxury mansion when you get to the farm. The focus is the nature and the trip.
I have never seen anything like this (the Páramos) before. Sumapaz is worth the visit - unlike most hikes. The place has its own beauty and simplicity. It's a unique chance to see a very different environment from Bogota and get to know local people living their lives in a very simple yet happy way. It's also worth mentioning that Sumapaz is extremely important for the water supply in Bogota - so be ecofriendly. Last but not least: be ready for the altitude: you can go up to 4,600m - the place is also very winding and wet. The guides were great and provided a very good explanation about local lives and the importance of this ecosystem to the environment,
Guides Hernan and Leon were excellent travel companions for our day trip to Sumapaz. I learned so much from them about Colombia’s history, geology, flora, fauna and culture. They are truly subject matter experts. The view from the top of the peak was unforgettable. Amazing that this place is only a few hours outside Bogotá.
We had a very good experience! Jorge was our guide and was super friendly, friendly and shared his knowledge and love for the moor ecosystem. I highly recommend it.
Excellent, great attention and experience. The Paramo is unique and beautiful. Our Guide, Yelitza, really enjoys what she does and shows in her knowledge and good attitude. 10/10
Excellent walking, beautiful scenery!! Loved it! Recommended I thank Yelitza for being an exceptional Guide!!
No visit to Sumapaz for us, ...cancelled the day before due to access problems (road); but we were offered a visit to another paramo (Matarredonda) to the east of Bogota which was combined with a visit to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Yesterday I had the walk with my mom to the wasteland of sumapaz and it was a beautiful experience. The amazing guide Jose, answered our questions, made the ride fun and was always very attentive to our well-being, likewise the driver Gustavo! We'll definitely be back!
Excellent tour. Our guide Daniel was very attentive. We liked talking to him. It was really a pleasure to do this tour.
