To spare you the time, BOOK THIS TOUR-GUIDE. Absolutely breathtaking views and even better hospitality. Just be ready to be outside all day and have fun.
Exceptional experience. We were guided by Carlos and Nestor. Highly recommended this team as they’ve done really professional job to let us all feeling fully accommodated from the beginning of the trip to the end.
Great experience, Matteo the guide was really great. The lagoon hike was lovely we had a lovely older gentleman who needed to go a little slower due to his knees and the altitude but he still managed it no problem. The views at the top were magnificent. The salt mines were also cool to look at. The driver was great, he noticed I was cold on the way home so gave me a blanket for the ride home. It was a super long day there was floods and unavoidable road closures, we were expecting a 12+ hour day due to the reviews and was expecting the lunch restaurant to be expensive from reviews also and all these things were true. Nevertheless it was a worthwhile tour and would recommend to anyone.
Amazing trip, we was group of 3. Mateo helped to translate everything to English and the tour plan is amazing. Lagoon and zipaquira church is must have to visit in Colombia.
Our guide Mateo was very knowledgeable and answered all questions we had. We thoroughly enjoyed our hike up to Guatavita Lagoon. The view was amazing and we learnt about various trees and flowers. We were lucky as the rain held up. But we were prepared in case it should rain and it often does in spurts. Our lunch, typical Columbian smoked meat at a local place in Zipaquira. We really enjoyed that. Sharing was the best option, at Mateo’s suggestion since the dishes are plentiful. Then onto the Salt Cathedral. The Salt Cathedral is something to not miss. We were given two hours there and initially thought it was a lot but we used all 2 hours. This day will be remembered and I highly recommend it
Esteban was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the indigenous people of Guatavita. The Salt Cathedral was a wonderful architectural site to be seen.
Esteban is a 10/10 tour guide, he translated everything for us, was really kind, helpful and clear with the itinerary information provided. The views were stunning and we learned so much about the Muisca culture and wisdom. Worth every penny! Thank you, Esteban!
Tour was amazing! Nesto y Juan were incredible tour guides! They were very attentive and make sure everyone was alright in every step of the tour. 10/10 recommend Even thought it a long tour, it is 100% worth it. I will say just be prepared for the high elevations and the long walks! Bring water!
Very nice Trip and well organized! Mateo, our tour guide explained in Spanish and English everything about the places, the history and the culture. We really enjoyed it
It is a long day, but very informative and interesting. Our guide, Esteban, did a great job educating us about the lagoon. I would caution if you buy food or drinks at the small cafés coming down the hill, be careful because I got a 200% + up charge for the same items over what another tourist in my group bought. The salt cathedral was amazing. That was worth the trip itself. I would definitely recommend this, but it is a long day.
Exceeded expectations. Our tour guide Emilio was passionate and knowledgeable about Muisca culture and the impact of colonialism. I also learned a lot about the local medicinal plants and paramo ecosystem. The salt cathedral / mine was also something to behold.
Use restroom before hopping on the tour bus at pickup point as the ride was about 2 hours long. 1) Town of Guatavita - this was our first stop where we got to hear a bit of the area and a chance to walk around on our for about 15 min. 2) Lagoon - tickets were included in this tour. Washrooms are available and waited for our scheduled time before entering the park. We learned about the plants and Muisca civilization, this is the flat walk before going up the lagoon up 3100m (highest point). The steps are well defined, but you can really feel the thin air going up (maybe 30min) this was the most strenuous, not difficult, just take your time. We had plenty of time walking around and even time for a snack break at the Yellow house before boarding the bus. 3. Drive to lunch was an hour to Zipaquirá at Toro Salvaje, a traditional Colombian restaurant serving grilled meat along with live musicians playing. Estimating we were there for 2hrs around 3-5pm. 4. Short drive to Salt Cathedral. We bought tickets together, otherwise it was about $30 USD at the door. The mine was closed, so we had the audio tour, walked through the 14 chambers and the different cathedrals inside. The audio tour was fairly boring, but it was cool to see such an amazing underground cathedral with such high ceilings. 5. Drive back to pick up sites. Overall, the tour delivered what it shared. Timing could be improved to meet their window of return of around 7:30/8:30, but reality we came back around 9pm at Parque 93. We had a lot of long breaks in between, so while we were not rushed, be aware of a long day.
Diego was a wonderful tour guide! His English was excellent and he switched effortlessly between languages to accommodate the American/British/Latin American and Spaniards on our tour! I wish I could do more tours with him while I am here, but alas, I am attending a conference.
Nestor our guide was good. He did the tour both in English & Spanish. The Salt Cathedral was amazing and is truly a must see. Going back to Bogota after the tour was tiring since it was rush hour and the traffic is horrible.
The tour was great! Pickup location was easy to find, our tour guide Nestor was friendly and prompt. The ride up to Guatativa was scenic and enjoyable. The town itself was quaint, and the lagoon was stunning. The coca tea was helpful in combating elevation sickness. The Salt Cathedral was absolutely stunning, overall the trip was well paced and the sights were breathtaking. The one complaint I have was that the tour did not come with a complementary lunch, but overall, Nestor was great.
You get a lot for your money with this tour. The guide on the bus, Esteban, and the guides in both locations were knowledgeable and personable. We stopped at a restaurant for lunch (food not included in the tour) with a lot of personality. Tours were arranged so we didn’t have to wait. The only down time was the way back home. It was a great day.
These are listed as two of the should sees around Bogota. I am glad I did it and Emilio was an excellent guide. I write this noting for the readers sake that I am not a great tour participant (I prefer to do my own thing). So, it is a long day, but the tour is quite well constructed. We certainly got a lot of good information. It included stops for bathroom en route - then the lake (about 2 hours) - a late lunch (for an hour) and then the cathedral (2.5 hours). A lot of driving in between each (except lunch and the cathedral). If you are an English speaker, then at the Salt Cathedral, get the free audio set. You can go at your own pace and get good - albeit a somewhat flowery - explanation of the different parts of the cathedral.
Our experience was fantastic, the professionalism and care from Nestor and the driver were exceptional. They accommodated every need we had and the day went very smoothly. Highly recommended.
Easy hike to lagoon. Matteo was knowledgeable friend guide translating in both English and spanish. Salt Cathedral was a highlight, absolutely amazing to see .highly recommended and big thanks to Matteo the guide
This was a fabulous experience. Esteban took great care of us, had tons of knowledge about the area, and made sure we had a fun time. Lake Guativita is a hike uphill, so be prepared for that, but the view is worth the trip. And The Salt Cathedral is very cool to see - it's amazing what the miners were able to do. Definitely recommend!
Amazing day Nestor is the best guide. The trip was not rushed they gave us enough time for everything and Nestor was super understanding if we ran late to any schedule l.
Had such a wonderful time on this tour. Esteban (I hope I’m spelling that right!) was a fantastic guide, super friendly and did a great job translating everything for us. Miguel was our driver and made sure we got to each spot safely and comfortably. The locations were absolutely stunning, and I’m so glad I decided to book this experience in the end. Highly recommend!
The Salt Cathedral and hike to Lake Guatavita were incredible—made even better by the amazing Tatiana and our awesome driver Alex. Tatiana brought music, fun quizzes, and a great lunch with live tunes. I’m coming back next year with the family and hoping we get Tatiana again—she was a whole vibe!
Colombia colombia. Before arriving in Colombia on our trip through South America, many people recommended us to visit the Guatavita Lagoon. It is really an unforgettable place, a place of dreams and a place that combines its natural power with its great history. Cradle of the history of this beautiful country really a place more than recommended is mandatory to visit this lagoon. The village before arriving at the reservoir is simply great.
This was a wonderful experience and Estefan was a great tour guide! Very informative in regards to the history of the indigenous people and the historical significance of the area when we were at Guatavita. In between we stopped at a lively restaurant, with live music and great food. The Salt Cathedral was an amazing thing to see in person. I did a self guided tour, but Estefan was around to answer questions and talk to as well. The cathedral as a whole is really neat. It’s an amazing achievement that humans carved the whole thing out of the rock. It is a solid 12 hour day. It’s such a unique experience and I’d recommend visiting if you’re traveling to Bogota.
It was a lovely day out but very tiring and I think it could have been reduced by a few hours. The hike, nature and lake was gorgeous. The lunch venue was crowded and loud with a lot of meat options. The salt cathedral was fascinating but a bit of a tourist trap. I'm glad I went but would recommend reducing the time alloted for the salt cathedral and allow people to eat where they want and roam freely.
This was a very full day and a lot for your money. Nestor and Angel were really great. We were in a comfortable coach with lots of space so you could sleep on the way (which I did at the start). The hike was nice and perfect. Definitely not too hard. The salt cathedral was interesting too. I thought it wouldn’t take two hours but there really is a lot of interesting stuff in there.
A " must do" trip even though it is a long day and drive from Bogota. Cristian was a patient guide who tolerated our many stops for photographs and rest stops. He gave us a lot of information on the vegetation and history of Guativata in bite sized pieces with time to think about the information. He made the tour of the Salt Cathedral meaningful rather than just another Church or museum.
This was an enjoyable tour! It was nice to see Guatavita and the Salt Cathedral in one day. Our guide, Nestor, spoke English and Spanish and was able to translate for our small group (5 total). It is a long day, 8a - 8:15p, being activities for the bus (has WiFi). We met at a Juan Valdez, grabbed coffee and boarded the bus at 8a for a 1.5 hr drive to Guatavita, for a cold, windy, beautiful hike (loop trail) around the lake (2 hrs total) .. Definitely stop to get an area at the yellow house at the end, it was the best arepa we had after a month in Colombia. Another 1hr+ to Zipaquirá for lunch and then to see the Salt Cathedral. It was also impressive, we spent a little over 2 hours part of which was with a Spanish language guide (or audio guided tour for other languages). There's alot of shopping in this area, so leave some time for that. Then 1.5hrs back in Bogotá traffic. An enjoyable day!
Great trip with a great tour guide. Nestor was very attentive and made sure to speak to everyone. He even spoke to them in their native language. It was a very nice trip. Highly recomend it
It was great to combine the two tours in one day since I didn’t have much time in Bogotá. We were in a small group from 4 countries and all talked together on the journey and over lunch which was lovely as a solo traveller. Our guide, Nestor, was very friendly and happy to summarise parts of the tour when my Spanish failed me, and answer my questions about the local history and nature. Would highly recommend!
It was great to combine the two tours since I only had a few days in Bogotá, we were in a small group of people from 4 countries and we all got to know each other. Our guide, Nestor, was fantastic and very helpful with translating or summarising parts of the tour where my Spanish didn’t cut it.
Holà ! Thank you for the stunning experience we had today ! We learn a lot about columbian history thanks to a safe and pedagogic guide. We took our time to visit and were amazed by the beauty of the cathedral. We would like to underline the friendly and professional attitude of Esteban our guide !
We had an amazing tour to the Salt Cathedral and Laguna Guatavita with Tatiana and Alexander. Tatiana was a sunny sweet girl and engaging guide, full of energy and knowledge. She shared fascinating insights about Colombia’s indigenous peoples, their culture, customs, and social structure, which really enriched the experience. We appreciated her kindness and how she made the day so enjoyable. Her passion for sharing Colombia’s history and traditions truly made the tour unforgettable. Highly recommend!
Amazing tour with the tour guide Tatyana and the driver Alexander. Such a wonderful experience seeing Laguna de Guatavita, Zipaquira, and the Cathedral de Sal! Our tour guide Tatyana was so nice, knowledgeable, and personable and sweet. She took the time to explain the culture of Guatavita and Colombia. We were English speakers and he made sure to stay behind with us and give us a tour in English.
Although we enjoyed visiting both places, in terms of a learning experience, this was not a positive tour. The guide, a very sweet young lady, had poor English skills and gave us very little information on what we were seeing. At Guatavita, we followed a guide who was speaking in Spanish and while he would take 20 minutes to explain about the region, she would talk for less than 5 minutes. By the end of the day, she was speaking only in Spanish. Also, the bus was very noisy and she had no microphone so anything she said during the trip was lost to most of us.
A long day, but worth it. Guatavita is a pleasant walk with some great views. Lunch was great. The Salt Cathedral is a must-see. The stages of the cross get a little repetitive, but the cathedral itself is an impressive place greatly enhanced by colorful light shows. There is an audio tour available in several languages.
Comfortable bus with thoughtful guide! He pulled our family aside during the all-Spanish tour of the park and kind of gave us our own tour in English. It was very sweet. When our lunch was a little messed up, he went over and above to get it right. And then the salt cathedral is just amazing. All around, a great tour. We took our 11 year old twins, and they loved it.
This was such an amazing day. Both the lagoon and the salt cathedral are world class sites. Our guide was absolutely fantastic! Taught us so much about the history and spirituality of the lagoon and was just generally great to chat to through the day. Lunch was delicious at a BBQ place (not included in price but very affordable). Salt cathedral was beyond anything I expected, it is a full two hours to see everything with the audio guide. Plus they have a little train to take you back to the starting point.
The trip was well organized. The transportation arrangements were perfect. We needed to return a little bit earlier and they were able to accommodate our needs. We really enjoyed both Guatavita and the Salt Cathedral.
Amazing tour! Such a great experience! Camilo was super knowledgeable and very personable. Overall great experience!
I got a tour with Nestor and Miguel Angel. Those guys are superb at their job. They love what they do and always have good topics to talk about. Me tocó un tour con Nestor y Miguel Angel. Chicos súper excelentes, aman lo que hacen y lo hacen con pasión. Siempre teníamos temas de qué hablar y conocer.
I wouldn’t change a thing! Everything was really well organized, and the hike to the lagoon along with the information on the indigenous community was educational. The Salt Cathedral was breathtaking, and very calming and fulfilling. Highly recommend!
Very nice tour, we learned a lot and saw some beautiful parts of the country, thanks to Camilo. Don’t hesitate to book it from Trip advisor
Camilo was fantastic. Super energetic, knowledgeable, and friendly. He really cares about making a memorable experience for his guests :)
It is the best experience to get to know two wonderful tourist places close to Bogotá in a single day. Thanks to the guide Nestor for always being attentive to us and teaching us a lot of useful information throughout the tour, the driver Miguel was very funny and also did very well.
It was very fun and interesting. It was frustrating because the tour at the Cathedral was in Spanish, so we purchased a walking tour handset so we could listen in English. However, the handset only talked about the religious aspects (stations of the cross) while the tour guide gave much more information about the mines and how they were built, history, etc.
I am very glad that I signed up for the tour. Seeing the Colombian countryside alone was worth it, but our guide (Nestor) and driver were awesome. Nestor explained everything the Guatavita guide explained to the group in Spanish, which was essential as my Spanish is limited. The sights themselves were amazing. The lagoon was one of the most incredible sights I've seen and the salt cathedral was quite amazing display of . The restaurant we stopped at was good, had great atmosphere and Colombian food. Thank you again Nestor for showing us around!
Diego, our tour guide, and Camilo, our driver, were both fantastic throughout the day. The driving was intense, and I strongly recommend that you do not do this tour on a Sunday due to all of the bicyclists going up and down the mountain. I really enjoyed both tour destinations of the cathedral and the lagoon; however, it definitely requires, a very high level of physical fitness. The panoramic views at the Lagoon are stunning once you get to the top. I really enjoyed the history of the Salt Cathedral and I even made a few friends despite my Spanish not being the best. Expect the trip to be majority in Spanish language.
