Create Your Own Colombian Emerald Ring

This was such a fun experience! Nick was a great tour guide and everyone at the emerald jewelry shop were very helpful throughout the ring making process. This was an amazing way to learn about the history of Colombian emeralds + a unique souvenir to bring home!!

Wow! This experience is truly a must-do if you’re in Bogotá, Colombia! It was an incredible experience that my entire family—adults, teens, and children—thoroughly enjoyed, and we would absolutely do it again. Juan’s knowledge and passion for sharing the fascinating history of Colombian emeralds, from the ancient Muisca people to the present-day esmeralderos, was evident throughout the experience. He made the history come alive and gave us a wonderful appreciation for the significance of emeralds in Colombia. During the workshop, we had several skilled craftsmen onsite who guided and assisted us in bringing our individual visions to life. It was so special to see our ideas transform into beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces. I would highly recommend coming prepared with a design idea beforehand. Having an idea of what you want to create will help avoid delays and allow you to make the most of the workshop. This is truly a unique experience that our whole family loved. Highly recommend! 💚💍

Start to finish it was great. The team were so welcoming and helpful and guide you through every step, while also letting you get stuck in to each part of the process. Loved every second and absolutely love my ring! We also learned about the history of emeralds in Colombia from the pre-hispanic cultures to modern day emerald markets before making our rings.

This probably should be listed as more than 5 hours, but it was very fun! Emeralds are very occluded/small for the included price, but you pay for the experience. Our guide, Nick, was incredible!!!

If you don't speak Spanish, don't worry the English instructions were very good! You get a lot of hands on experience making your own ring. It is a lot of fun!

This is one of the coolest experiences I've done in Bogotá over the last 16 years of visiting. I never had much interest in buying an emerald, but making your own emerald ring was a great way to spend three hours. Not only did we learn about the history of emeralds in Colombia, but we also came to appreciate the art of crafting custom jewelry. We were guided along the way with true artists in the business who helped us turn an idea into one of the most memorable souvenirs we've brought home from Colombia. The emeralds aren't the highest quality, but they are indeed genuine. It's worth paying a little extra money for a larger or higher quality stone than the one included in the tour price. This tour was so fun and such a unique experience! Nick was an amazing tour guide and incredibly knowledgeable about emeralds and the ring making process. He catered to both English and Spanish speaking attendees and ensured nothing was lost in translation between languages. The jewelers also had a tenure of experience and assisted in every step of the way to ensure a quality product was made in both languages as well. Not only did I love their enthusiasm and expertise, but you really get to get your hands dirty and truly make your own ring. You start with picking out the stone you want and can upgrade sizing for a fee which I thought was well worth it to get a bigger gem. Then you pick your ring style and get to work! Certain styles require different techniques and you can watch the different processes done by each individual to make their ring. You will get to do everything in your own process such as melting the silver, using manual equipment to shape your ring, forging it in fire, and polishing once it’s complete. It was so much fun to learn about the history of emeralds, the ring making process, and experience that process first hand. Thank you to the wonderful guides for helping me make such a beautiful souvenir while providing a great hands on experience. Highly recommend this tour to fill your morning or afternoon!

We then visited the workshop, where we had the opportunity to choose both the ring design and the emerald we wanted. The entire team guided us through every step of the process. Everyone was incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive, making the experience both enjoyable and memorable. The final result exceeded all our expectations, and we couldn’t be happier with our ring. This is hands-on, 3-hour workshop where you can craft your own silver ring with an emerald in a jewelry store. The guides were knowledgeable, fun, and relatively fluent in English. If you want a bigger emerald (the basic package includes a very small emerald), it is possible to upgrade your stone. The guides are also very collaborative to any design you conjure. The experience includes a history of Colombian emeralds and guidance on how to choose a high quality emerald (and how to bargain for one on the streets).

Of everything we had planned for Colombia, this is what I was most excited for. My expectations were high and they were still blown away. This was an amazing experience, everyone was so kind and helpful, and the rings turned out amazing. You don't want to miss out on this activity!

This experience has been really nice. The guides are very friendly and will help you patiently with your ring. Don’t worry to go alone to the workshop or if you’re not speaking Spanish. We had a very nice and small group and the whole experience was very relaxed, questions were always welcome. And Most important: I love my ring :)

What a great and unique experience! We were met on time and got a bit of history and info on the Emerald trade in Columbia as well as the importance of the stones in their traditional culture. After a short walk we arrived at the workshop and got busy designing and making our rings. When they say make, they mean it. Melt the silver, roll the bar out flat, create the circle, solder the ring closed, polish the ring, set the stone and polish the final product. At every step you are doing the work with guidance and coaching. I was skeptical, when I signed up for this experience, that I would be dying much more than choosing a design and watch/"helping" with to creation. I was completly wrong and loved the experience. I would do this again if I were in the area on a future trip.

Favorite experience in Columbia. I wear my ring daily and get so many compliments on it. Fun story to say we made our own rings!! 10 year old loved it. It fits his thumb now and can grow into it.

I totally recommend this If you love rings and are in Bogota, our tour guide and the Masters at the jewelry store were patient, knowledgeable and friendly. We started the day at the meeting point (we grabbed a coffee there while waiting for the rest of the group). We had a great time making our very own rings, which we will cherish forever as we laboured over it <3 You have the option to choose higher value emeralds or additional emeralds (and pay the difference) for your ring. My sister wasn't satisfied with her ring and we returned and the Master kindly altered it for her <3

This was so fun! First, Nick is an amazing guide. He is so knowledgeable, and fun to learn from. He is so interactive and passionate about everything it is hard not to have anything but fun with him as a guide. The actual ring making experience was so cool. Carlos and his team were so gracious and fun to have this hands on experience. I love my ring and haven’t taken it off since the experience!

Super fun experience. Guid meets you and gives you tons of knowledge with perfect English. Then after about 30 min they take you to a jewelry manufacturer. Where 3 very nice employees help you make a ring of your own design.. I was shocked how amazing my ring came out.

Everything was hands on from picking our emerald at the beginning to polishing it at the end + the guide was very professional and friendly with everyone. The experience itself was great, we really enjoyed making our own rings and it created a lovely memory for us in Bogota as the city was more of a stop gap. We paid more for bigger emeralds but my husbands emerald was cracked upon setting when the pressure would have been added - as said by our host. After we left the shop we noticed a crack when inspecting the ring but thought it was an occlusion because it was quite obvious to us, so it would have been obvious to them. The emerald broke just days later. When getting in touch with our host they were really apologetic and tried to give us lots of different options for us to get the ring back to the shop for the emerald to be replaced but it just didn't work for us as we are moving often around Colombia. Instead we went to a bunch of shops in Cartagena to try and get the best price for replacing the emerald which cost us $200. It's a shame because as professionals, they would have noticed the crack and so it should have been redone. It was disappointing that we had to end up paying an extra $200 for a ring we already paid for and think that a part refund should have been offered. That said, we really enjoyed the experience. The host was super accommodating as we were running late to the class due to a delayed flight and as said, he tried to make it right but trying to get the ring back to the shop. Recommend

Great experience for solo or for whole family, even kids!! Staff is very friendly and attentive! Worth every penny!!! You get to design, make from scratch, create totally personalized beautiful piece of one of a kind ring for yourself or your loved one ( if making the ring for someone who is not there—know their ring size ahead of time). We had a 14 year old boy with us who totally loved the process and his final product. He made a manly ring and loved wearing it. Our Tour guide Nick was very friendly, knowledgeable and informative. The staff in the jewelry making shop was very friendly, helpful, patient, true artesian, the last of a kind in their trade. You get to pick the design and the emerald you like. The small stone is included in your tour price but if you want a bigger stone or multiple stones, they offer it to you for the extra cost for a very reasonable prices. It could be a really great experience for a newly wed, married couple or whole family. They also offer optional engraving for a small cost. This is truly the best tour/ experience in Bogota. Don’t miss it!!

My experience was incredible. Juan told us in a very clear way the esmerald story here on Colombia. Then he explained more specific stuff and then we started the creation. That was so much interesting and fun for me! I really would come back when visiting Bogotá again. Super recommendable experience!

Super cool experience to learn about jewelry making and that you get to be a part of the process. The included emeralds are very small, so that was disappointing. If you want multiple or a bigger stone, you have to pay a difference and the price get steep quickly! In my opinion the emeralds were very, very expensive and not with the hundreds of dollars price tag (I’ve seen Colombian emeralds for much less at home in stores, markets, and gem shows) Ultimately I enjoyed the ring I made but would have preferred something more substantial given the $120 price tag. Maybe if it included entry into the Gold museum (your meeting place is right across the street), it would be a fuller experience and justify the cost? In any event, I highly recommend this unique experience- just be prepared to either spend a lot more for a bigger stone, or be happy with a tiny piece.

We met our guide next to a bakery right by the Gold Museum. It was nice he gave us a tour where the Emerald history and outdoor sales occur before we started our jewelry making. The guys helping us make a ring were fantastic! There were about 6 of us in a room with 2 experts plus our guide and we each had a lot of help melting down the metal and shaping the ring. Note, you can choose to upgrade/add additional emeralds ranging from $30-$120 USD. Pro-tip: pick out a design first, our guide showed us pictures from their IG account. The ring turned out much better than I anticipated! Great unique souvenir that showcases the amazing significance of Colombian's gem.

Juan shared a lot of fascinating information about Colombian emeralds. The masters leading the workshop were patient and very helpful. My husband made a pendant, and I created a ring. We chose a slightly larger emerald for an additional cost, which was totally worth it. We highly recommend this workshop – a wonderful souvenir and an unforgettable experience!

This was a unique and gratifying experience. Our guide and the jeweler were absolutely wonderful. We actually substantially created our own emerald rings. It was informative and a very satisfying experience to know you created this piece of jewelry. We opted to pay a bit more for bigger stones. I did not incorporate the stone that was included in the price of the tour but they carefully wrapped it for me to take home. I highly recommend this activity.
