Itinerary
One of the most incredible sites related to the Berlin Wall and the scene of tragic loss and brilliant escapes. The memorial itself is over 1km long and includes the only preserved complete cross-section of the Berlin Wall and Death-Strip.
The most famous of all the Check Points it was the scene of many failed and successful escapes and also an incredible face-off between the American and Soviet forces in the Autumn of 1961.
The section on Niederkirchnerstrasse is the only surviving fragment of the wall in this part of Berlin. It is right next to the former-Luftwaffe Headquarters which was used during the East German Period as the House of Ministries. It is also the site of one of the more incredible escapes into West Berlin.
Visit and possibly ascend the last of the "BT - variant" watchtowers that used to surround West Berlin. A rare survival saved thanks to a private initiative.
See how a desolate piece of land in, and also bounding, the death-strip has developed into a high-rise business and entertainment quarter. The rebirth of re-unified Berlin before your very eyes.

Alex took us on a brilliant and sweeping tour of Berlin and East Germany’s history. Through museums and memorials, plaques and statues, our vast exploration of the city taught us more than any book or class ever could. Alex was deeply knowledgeable and engaging. We highly recommend his tour.
A great tour with a really friendly and knowledgeable guide, Paul. It was really well put together and we learned a lot.
My mother and I really enjoyed our tour with Eugen! He is a very informative and friendly guide. We learned a lot!
The guide frequently took breaks for cigarettes. Limited information was given. We could have conducted the tour ourselves.
Very interesting tour. Cairan was our guide and had tons of interesting stories, pictures and even videos to illustrate what life was like during the Cold War.
Ciaran was an exceptional guide. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the wall and presented meaningful anecdotes and personal information.
This was easily one of the best walking tours I’ve ever done. It’s a fantastic way to learn about Berlin’s history and orientation, as the tour covers a few key areas around the city, making it especially useful for anyone who has just arrived. Our guide, Cairan, was insightful, using individual personal stories that truly brought the history to life and articulated what people experienced at the time. Highly recommended!
This is a comprehensive and well-explained overview of the history of how the Cold War developed in Berlin and Germany, and how and why the wall was built. Our very engaging guide Cairan showed us key places in Berlin related to the Wall, and explained its history and how the East German government prevented their people from fleeing. A very interesting 3.5 hour walking tour; highly recommend.
Great tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable. He shared insights not only about the political but also about how average people were affected by the cold war.
Cairan as an excellent guide as we toured several key locations related to the Cold War and the building and then fall of the Berlin Wall. He provided excellent context and responded clearly and patiently to participant questions. This tour is very informative and provides good value for money too. This is a walking tour.
This is an exceptionally informative and fascinating tour that is focussed on the Berlin Wall (though our guide Ciaran was a font of knowledge about Berlin’s broader history). He is an astoundingly knowledgeable and interesting guide and very skilled at maintaining his group’s interest. 3.5 hours is a long tour and I was constantly engaged. I’d recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in history.
Very nice tour gave a lot of history before WW 2 as well after, Wasn’t expecting to pay for train , would have expected to have included with the cost of the tour.
Paul was an amazing host and tour guide. The morning we spent with him gave us incredible insight into the development of Berlin and a much deeper understanding of how the Wall shaped both the city and the people who lived there. His firsthand knowledge and perspective really brought the history to life and made the experience far more meaningful than simply visiting the sights on our own. He did a fantastic job creating a walking tour that evolved along with the changing city, helping us understand Berlin’s history as we moved through it. His knowledge added so much context to everything we saw and made the morning both interesting and memorable. We enjoyed the experience so much that we have recommended this tour to multiple friends. Wear comfortable shoes, but the walk itself is easy and filled with amazing sights throughout.
Fascinating informative tour, our guide was amazing. Saw things that I’d only read about. great experience.
Eugen was a great guide tour with excellent knowledge of the Berlin Wall and the history behind it and I would definitely give it a recommendation if you are interested in this type of history.
Paul was our guide. He was engaging and informative, with great insights and anecdotes. Highly recommend.
Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and kept the tour moving at a great pace. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone!
one of the best walking tours i’ve done - and i’ve done a few in my time. didnt drag, very informative and encouraged questions. thankyou!
Irish Paul was amazing. He went into a lot of detail at each location that was clear and easy to understand. Very friendly, approachable and helpful. Shout out to his mum too who likes to read his reviews 😂 definitely recommend!
We had Irish Paul as our guide for the Cold War tour. It was by far the best tour we did whilst in Berlin and we did a few. He was a fantastic guide, so knowledgeable and fun to be with. The 3 hours flew by. Would definitely book with him again. Thank you!
Excellent tour around central Berlin, hopping on and off public transport, Lots of photos of what the areas looked like during the cold war and interesting stories from the period.
This was a really a great tour. Our guide was very informative and answered questions throughout. The tour covered many sites from the Berlin Wall to Check Point Charlie and much more.
Paul was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. However some of the details on the Viator website didn't play out on the tour. Some stops were missed off and the tour didn't end where it had started. In addition, one piece of 'additional information' stated a maximum of 15 participants and another said 21. No mention of train tickets needing to be purchased either. Viator really needs to ensure that the tour details match the tour itself. Having said this, it was a fascinating tour - we learnt so much. Recommended.
When booking through Viator, we were lead to believe this was a bike tour. Another couple on the same tour had the same thought, so it was not just us. So note, this is a walking tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and we saw some good sites, but not as much if we would have been on bikes. A big portion of the tour was walking from location to location with not much time left for exploring the areas we stopped at.
Paul, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable and made the experience personable. He was conscientious of all the guests and quite respectful about a difficult subject
I booked this tour for four people for 24/7/26 using the Viator platform. The pre-tour information I received via the app was very comprehensive and the meeting point was easy to locate. Our guide, Paul Holhurst, was brilliant. He was very passionate about Berlin and its cold war history. He added a huge amount of colour and context to each of the places we visited sharing facts, stories, pictures and personal insights. His enthusiasm and knowledge brought the tour to life and was so interesting. The content of the tour was fascinating - my personal highlights were the "Ghost Stations" we visited, the Palace of Tears, and the, very effective, Berlin Wall Memorial at, the fascinating, Bernauerstrasse. You could, of course, visit these privately but our guide Paul absolutely transformed the experience. No hesitation in recommending this tour - all four of us enjoyed it immensely.
Fabulous tour and guide. Frey was 10/10.
Fantastic knowledge and brought to life the wall and living in this period of time. Guide was excellent very friendly.
Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate tour guide, his enthusiasm and personal interest shows through and makes the tour a delight. I learnt so much and I'm inspired to watch some movies set around that time in Berlin! Thank you Ciaran! Do not miss this one if you're visiting Berlin.
I booked this late the night before and tbh I didn’t realise there would be so much walking on such a hot hot day. Apart from that Frey our tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. Tour was v interesting and even though it was the briefest touch on the overwhelming history that had occurred there Frey’s commentary around the sights and memorials we visited truly made us feel just the tiniest percentage of the gravity of events that had happened and the emotional turmoil and suffering bourne there… not in ancient history but in my own lifetime.
Eugene was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot.
Tour guide was very informative and friendly. Easy pace but still covered a lot of ground. Lots of history.
A big thank you Cairan, one of the best tours I have been on anywhere. You and the Vermont High Achievers made this tour for me, you with your knowledge, passion and anecdotes and the high achievers with their questions to you.
Eugen was very knowledgeable and gave us great information pertaining to the Berlin Wall and areas surrounding it.
Frey was very knowledgeable and informative. The tour gave us a real insight into the history of the Berlin Wall.
Eugen was a great guide - really enjoyed his tour, and the way he brought things to life. The tour lasted just over three hours and was a good depth of information and allowed for questions and focus on topics of personal interest. I’d highly recommend.
Paul was an amazing tour guide. He was very clear and understandable with an amazing amount of knowledge. He used references that would make sense to us as a foreigner. Even with some sites overlapping from previous tours we were given more information so it did not seem repetitive. I highly recommend this tour and Paul as your guide if you can get him!
Our guide Collum was great! Clear explanations of geopolitical factors along with engaging human intetrst stories. Highly recommend!
An excellent tour - Rhys was so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the city. Great value for money
Very informative tour about the Wall and Berlin in general. It also made great use of public transport to see more places and minimal tiredness afterwards.
Eugen was a fantastic tour guide. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
A fabulous tour guide. Aurel was knowledgable and spoke excellent English, explaining the history and political history in an interesting way. The tour took in the main sights and wasn’t rushed. Aurel was friendly and offered a more personal experience, retelling a story from his own family history; how his own grandparents managed to escape in the secret tunnel between East and West Berlin. I would highly recommend the tour and Aurel for a brilliant 3 hour tour of the Wall and Cold War.
Our tour was excellent and our guide Eugen was very knowledgeable about every facet of history as it pertained to the tour, and would definitely recommend him!
What a fantastic experience. To have a tour guide, Aurel, with family history of own grand parents defecting from the east to the west via underground tunnel. Aurel had informative and captivating stories, first class tour that we would recommend to all
This was a top notch tour! Cairan Ryan is an outstanding tour guide and I highly recommend his Berlin Wall Cold War tour or any other tour that he leads. He is an incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic, and attentive tour guide. We learned a great deal about Cold War Berlin, the Berlin Wall, and the important roles that these things play in Berlin today. Cairan made the complex history of the city, including the division of Berlin into different sectors, understandable for us. He vividly described and conveyed the courage and tragedy of events linked with the Berlin Wall. He is especially talented at showing the spatial relationships between the architecture and geography of the city today with that of the past. I only wish we had time to take additional tours with Cairan! The tour was a rich experience and a highlight of our Begin trip! I can’t recommend it highly enough!
Our guide, Eugene, was very knowledgeable and made the tour incredible. While the tour was almost 4 hours, it seemed to fly by.
Excellent tour with Eugene , perfect length of tour
We learned so much about the Cold War. Eugen really navigated the city well and utilized public transport.
Eugen was a very knowledgeable guide and really took the time to show us the sights. He was great at answering our questions and we felt like we came away learning a lot. This is perfect for anyone wanting to learn about Berlin’s Cold War history and is excellent value for money.
