Itinerary
Meet your guide at the Brandenburg Gate, the neoclassical landmark that became the defining symbol of a divided — and finally reunited — Berlin. There is no better place to begin the story of the Cold War city. Your guide sets the scene at the end of the Second World War, when a defeated Germany was carved into four Allied occupation zones. Berlin, though it lay deep inside the Soviet zone, was itself split four ways — and in 1949 the country divided into the communist GDR in the east and the democratic FRG in the west, with this city on the frontline between them. For nearly three decades the Gate stood marooned in the Death Strip, unreachable behind the Wall. Your guide introduces the walk ahead: a journey through espionage, surveillance, divided families and the courage that finally brought the Wall down.
We stop before the grand Russian Embassy on Unter den Linden, a vast and imposing building that speaks of Moscow's power at the very heart of the city. Your guide uses it to tell the story of Soviet control. After the Red Army took Berlin in 1945, Soviet occupation policy reshaped the east, and in 1949 the German Democratic Republic was born, governed by the all-powerful Socialist Unity Party (SED). Yet real authority lay in Moscow — as became brutally clear in June 1953, when Soviet tanks crushed a workers' uprising in the streets of East Berlin. Your guide explains how the Brezhnev Doctrine later formalised Moscow's grip over the entire Eastern Bloc. On paper the GDR was a sovereign state, but politically, economically and militarily it remained bound to the Soviet Union — a satellite that could never truly stand alone.
A short walk brings us to the site of the former American presence near the Gate, where your guide turns to one of the Cold War's most shadowy dimensions: Berlin as the espionage capital of the world. Here, East and West stood only metres apart, and the city became the great chessboard of the intelligence war — CIA against KGB, with British and French services woven in. Your guide reveals the tradecraft of the era: Operation Gold, the audacious tunnel dug to tap Soviet phone lines; the double agents and defectors who slipped between sides; the hidden cameras, coded messages and even assassination attempts. Most dramatic were the spy exchanges at the Glienicke Bridge, where captured agents were swapped in the dead of night. Your guide brings this secret world to life — proof that the Cold War was fought as much through cunning as through force of arms.
We arrive at the Tränenpalast, the "Palace of Tears," a glass and steel pavilion that once served as the border crossing between East and West Berlin at Friedrichstraße station. Your guide explains the heartbreak that gave the building its name. This was where East Berliners said goodbye to visiting relatives from the West, enduring strict passport controls, customs searches and interrogations. Ordinary Westerners could visit; East Germans were rarely allowed to travel freely at all, and the farewells here were often agonising. Your guide tells the human stories: families split overnight when the border closed in August 1961, tearful separations at this very threshold, and the daily reality of life divided by the Iron Curtain. The Wall, they explain, cut through not just a city, but through families, friendships and everyday life.
We descend into Nordbahnhof, once one of Berlin's eerie "ghost stations" — the Geisterbahnhöfe that haunted the divided city's underground. Your guide explains the strange geography of a split transport network. When the Wall went up on 13 August 1961, stations like this one, though physically in the East, sat on lines used by West Berlin trains. The solution was chilling: West Berlin trains rumbled slowly through without stopping, past dimly lit, sealed platforms patrolled by armed border guards, while the entrances above were bricked shut to keep Easterners out. Through original photographs and maps, your guide shares the stories of commuters whose city was severed overnight, and the desperate escapes attempted through the rail infrastructure. Even Berlin's underground became part of the border — ordinary stations turned into silent monuments to division.
We reach the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße, the most complete surviving stretch of the border and the place where its full horror is laid bare. Your guide walks you through the anatomy of the Wall, built almost overnight on 13 August 1961: not a single barrier but a deadly system of outer wall, floodlit Death Strip, patrol roads, signal fences, watchtowers and inner wall, engineered to trap an entire population. Bernauer Straße saw some of the most dramatic scenes of all — residents leaping from upper windows as their homes were bricked up beneath them, and the daring escape of Tunnel 57. Here your guide remembers the victims, among them Peter Fechter, left to die in the Death Strip within sight of both sides. It was, they explain, one of the most sophisticated border systems ever built — designed to stop a country's own people from leaving.
Our walk ends at the Chapel of Reconciliation, a quiet, curved building of rammed earth that stands as a gentle epilogue to a hard story. Your guide tells its remarkable history. The original church once stood marooned in the Death Strip, cut off from its congregation and finally blown up by the GDR in 1985 as an obstacle to the border. After reunification, a new chapel rose on the same ground — a symbol of healing where there had been only division. From here your guide draws the whole story together: the Peaceful Revolution of 1989, the Monday demonstrations, and the night the Wall finally opened, leading to German reunification. East Berlin's story, they explain, is not one of concrete alone, but of ordinary people shaped by surveillance and courage — and of one of history's greatest examples of peaceful change.

Great tour, Marcel was very knowledgable, friendly and informative. Well worth it. Learned a lot. Would definitely recommend.
Explored a number of sites with the story growing to give a feel of that era of Berlin. Essentially matched the outline in the description, which included some places not covered by other tours. In my case, it helped take me back to a former time in my life, which is what this visit to Berlin was all about.
One of the best tours we did in Berlin! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this tour, but it ended up being one of my favourite experiences in Berlin. Learning about life in East Berlin, the Wall and what people went through during those years was fascinating. Our guide, Nir, was brilliant, really knowledgeable but also very down to earth. I especially enjoyed hearing the personal stories and little details you don’t usually find in history books. Nir has a great way of explaining complicated history and making it interesting without overwhelming you with dates and facts. It gave me a completely different perspective on the city. I honestly wish the tour had been longer because I had so many questions! Would absolutely recommend it, even if you’re not a big history fan.
Marcel was nice and knowledgeable. The weather was great.
Great tour. Fascinating and fun. Mark was delightful and an excellent teacher of history. So many insights into the Cold War in Berlin. I loved the tour. Highly recommend.
Brilliant tour, very knowledgeable, would recommend
If you're visiting Berlin, don't skip this tour. There are plenty of walking tours in the city, but this one gives you the background you need to really understand what you're seeing. Places that might seem like ordinary streets or buildings suddenly have fascinating stories behind them. Nir was a fantastic guide. He has a great way of bringing the history of Communist Berlin to life without making it feel like a history lesson. The tour was engaging from start to finish, with a great mix of historical facts, personal stories, and opportunities to ask questions. You could tell he genuinely enjoys sharing Berlin's history, and that made the experience even better. What I appreciated most was the context. Instead of simply pointing out landmarks, Nir explained what everyday life was like in East Berlin, how the Berlin Wall shaped the city and its people, and how the legacy of the GDR can still be seen today. It's the kind of insight you just don't get from walking around on your own. I'd recommend this tour to anyone visiting Berlin. It's informative, thought-provoking, and gives you a much deeper understanding of the city. If you get Nir as your guide, you're in for a great experience.
We showed up 5 minutes early and couldn’t find the group at the designated meeting point. We tried contacted the company and they responded with the guide’s phone number. I called a few times but the guide’s never answered. They were completely incompetent, unable to coordinate or help us. We then asked for a refund and they refused. They were very rude and unhelpful. I would encourage getting tours from any other organization!
Just back from Berlin where we took The Sandeman walking tour that is called Communist Berlin and Berlin Wall Tour. Our guide was Simon and he was superb. His knowledge meant that we gleaned great historical information but his delivery made it easy to take this in. Wee stories helped us appreciate the insights and his willingness to take and answer questions the whole way round was greatly appreciated by all. I highly recommend this guide and this tour. Thanks Simon
We had an excellent tour with Marcel. He was so knowledgable and interesting. We went away feeling that we understood so much more about Berlin. Also it was good fun and we saw so much.
Additional cost/need for subway ticket not known ahead of time. Guide was terrific snd learned so much!
Our tour guide Cristobal was beyond words. So knowledgeable and passionate about history, that he made the entire experience enticing. Not only did he educate us on so many things, he extended his service about other recommendations when visiting Berlin, whether it be for educational purposes or just leisure. It’s people like him that are so perfect for the job!
Great walking tour. Two and a half hours would never be enough but the tour guide’s earnest efforts to give the proper context with respect to the history of Germany in general snd Berlin specifically greatly helped in understanding and appreciating the sites we visited. Our tour guide was Cristobal. He kept everything interesting and worthwhile. Highly recommended if you only have a limited time in Berlin.
We toured with Marcel and he was great, very personable and chatty without being too much so. Included personal stories of his early childhood in Berlin up to the time of the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Interesting facts and stories along the way. This tour focuses, as the name suggests, on the time when Berlin was divided into east and west. Great geographical orientation for some things we wanted to visit in our own time, tranenpalast and the ghost train stations (explained REALLY well). Tour finished at Berlin Wall memorial which we went to after the tour finished. Thanks Marcel.
Marcel was an excellent guide on the 2 hour Berlin tour. He delivered lots of historical information to a large group on a cold wet morning but kept everyone fully engaged. It was a good way to get our bearings and locate areas we could revisit later.
Marcel was our guide for this 2.5hr free walking tour of the Communist history of Berlin & the Wall. His historical information was great and he was a really engaging guide. Some of the group didn't turn up (why?) but it made the group smaller which was more enjoyable for us. We stopped at sights that we otherwise might not have seen. Starting at the Brandenburg Gate we walked past the Russian Embassy to the station at Friedrich Strasse and the palace of tears. We might never have known the history of the (ghost) stations and most certainly would not have stopped at the palace of tears but for Marcel. We perhaps spent a little too much time at the final stop at the Wall Memorial, but definitely would have missed the reconstruction of the wall as it was, without Marcel. We didn't know what to expect of a free walking tour but it was definitely one not to miss & were really happy to tip at the end. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and Marcel's tip on where to eat at Alexander Platz was excellent. We would definitely recommend to all.
Marcel was an excellent guide. Sharing historical and personal experiences and information in a really engaging way. We weren’t sure what to expect but it was definitely one of our Berlin highlights. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend to all.
Gilad was an amazing tour guide. This far exceeded our expectations. He was so knowledgeable and brought a fantastic mix of history, current culture and depth to our understanding of our surroundings. He clearly knew so much about Berlin and shared his love for the city and emotional history with us.
Gilad, our guide did an extraordinary job teaching us about the Third Reich and the DDR and Berlin. He brings home the message of the importance of protecting the rights of all. Excellent tour!
Dustin was incredible! Informative, knowledgeable, and comedic. He seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge about Berlin, which made the tour so much more enjoyable! Would highly recommend this to even those who think they have seen all of Berlin.
We loved this tour, so complete, dynamic, very informative and with lots of fun facts and curiosities we didn’t know. The guide was very charismatic and full of energy. PS: Loved the plane imitation
I had a tour with Natalie, a fantastic guide, on July 29th. She was friendly and gave a lot of details during the tour. With Natalie's explanation, Berlin became a place with so many layers and stories! Hope one day Natalie can host a tour around architecture which she has a lot of knowledge as well! I am looking forward to it!
The Sandeman walking tour that we did is now called Communist Berlin and Berlin Wall Tour. Our guide was Marcel and he was fabulous. His depth and breadth of knowledge meant that he could share really interesting insights on the tour. I hhighly recommend this guide and this tour.
We did the walking tour with Rodrigo and he was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and friendly with a sense of humour. We did want to give a tip but by the time we came back from the ATM with cash he was gone. If you can please let us know how to get a tip to him that would be wonderful, as he deserves it. Highly recommend.
Excellent guide, Natalie who was very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about the subject. She made the 2.5 hours fly past!
Such a great tour! Dustin was so knowledgeable and a great guide. Would 100% recommend. I plan to sign up for another tour tomorrow.
First of all, Cristobal was a fantastic tour guide! I wish I had the QR code he shared with us for reviews specifically to the site, but my phone was not working at the time. The tour was a super nice experience, and a fun quick introduction to some Berlin history with fun little insights. Cristobal was super personable, always willing to chat with anyone and answer any questions. He also gave some great tips you could only get from a Berliner, like the best kabab spots, nice hidden gem bars, etc. Berlin is a massive and cool city. Definitely spend some time exploring outer neighborhoods after your tours and museums.
Cristobal was an amazing guide, great story telling of the city with such extraordinary history. He was a really kind man, would highly recommend.
The guide I walked with Marcel. He explained every landmark clearly and interestingly. The timeline of places we have walked through are well connected. It was informative while easy to understand.
Did the Communism and Berlin Wall tour and probably the best walking tour I've done. The route brings you to many different places that wouldn't be easily found without the tour, and there is a lot to see, read and hear. The tour guide, Dustin, was exceptional and really brought the history to life. Would highly recommend.
We went on the tour last week with Chris, who made history and culture come to life. He started the tour grounded in history, from the early establishment of the city, and then walked us through all critical periods of the city, connecting them to the sites around us. His theatrics brought humor to even the hardest topics while he balanced acknowledging history's many victims with moments of human accomplishment. I would suggest starting your trip on this tour.
Second time doing the tour. First being in 2015. Both times excellent. Marcel is a wonderful guide who is really interested in history and in the people he meets. Such a lovely bloke. We had a lovely experience. Would do it again.
Great tour I attended today! Juan the tour guide was amazing- very informative with the history of Berlin and facts. Is a great way to see the sights of the city!!
I went with my mum today and Cristóbal gave us the Spanish tour. He was super nice and funny and made the 1 degree weather much more bearable. The way he explained history was very captivating. Sandemans never fails to deliver, every single time is a great time. Thank you!
We had Felipe who was amazing, so helpful and knowledgeable and was happy to share recommendations of Berlin after the tour. Thoroughly recommend!
I always do a Sandeman walking tour when I arrive in a new city. I loved this tour. You get to see the most important points of the city and learn so much about it.
In 22/jan at 13:50 I arrived in the meeting point and started looking for a guide or someone with a red flag. I couldn't find no one. I waited for mor 30 minutes, confirmed if I was in the right spot, looked several times in the map, searched for some number or contact form, but couldnt find nothing. After waiting 30 minutes alone in the cold, I realised no one was really coming, so decided to go home. That was a really frustating and annoying situation. It was my first time using servises from the site, and probably the last one! You should at least warn that the tour is not going to happen ou give a form of contact in case of troubles like that...
Chris It's a fun and educational tour. Chris knows exactly how to address the audience, capture attention and share interesting content. I would repeat.
It was great walking tour. Our guide provided excellent examples from German history. It was very interesting tour!
I didn't even expect it to be so excellent. That was great New Year's Eve tour - thank you! Our friend recommended this and she was right - this is the best choice.
We were booked on the tour in advance and it was cancelled without any prior warning ruining the rest of our plans. Disappointed in the lack of information.
The website shows there is a 2PM English tour but they only do a 11:00 AM English tour. We had arranged our schedule around the tour and when it did not happen it messed up our plans we were looking forward to them giving us a layout of the land to continue our site seeing.
This tour was recommended by a friend back home and it did not disappoint. Marcel was a truly excellent tour guide, the tour was very informative and enjoyable. The tour was one of our highlights of our time in Berlin, highly recommended.
Stevie was a very knowledgeable and fun tour guide. She coped with a very large group really well and offered intelligent and thoughtful commentary on the places we visited.
Marcel did a wonderful job explaining the events of WW II, rise of Hitler, cold war, GDR regime and fall of the Wall in the short time we had. He was able to capture the attention of a 12 and 16 year old, so thank you and well done!
We arrived at the Starbucks outside of Bradenberg Gate for our 14:30 tour that we paid for and the tour guide never showed up. There were other registered participants that also showed up so it's not like we were at the wrong spot. It was pretty disappointing that we paid for the tour, received a confirmation email/ticket and went out of our way to schedule our day around this tour.
Less personal opinions from guide. Lack of historical reviews. Guide did not give relevant information, seemed to be exhausted from long night. Effective duration of tour was about 2 hours
The tour guide Marcel was very personable with everyone of the trip and well versed into the detailed history of the sights and stories of the tour. It’s a casual walking tour and good introduction into the Wall area in central Berlin
Very nice trip, the guide was very knowledgeable and communicated clearly, my partner and I learned about many historical facts
