I had done a Sandemans walking tour previously in Berlin. This time maybe due to the time of the year we visited, there were very few takers. Our guide hoped we would cancel. Maybe it would cost him more if he took us out. I did wonder the cost of living crisis, the rise in hotel prices have had an effect on tourist numbers in Berlin. As we waited for our guide to arrive. We chatted to another guide of a free walking tour. She only had one punter. Our tour felt subdued because of the low numbers. My wife found it informative. The Holocaust memorial was an emotional experience for her. However our guide just did not come across as enthused.

Itinerary
Start your tour at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, where your guide will delve into the rich history and significance of this neoclassical monument. As you stand before this symbol of unity and resilience, you'll learn about its pivotal role in Berlin's past, from its origins as a grand city entrance to its role in significant historical events.
Next, visit the site of the Führerbunker, a place of profound historical significance. Although the bunker itself is no longer visible, your guide will share the compelling story of its role during the final days of World War II. Learn about the events that unfolded here and reflect on this somber chapter in Berlin's history.
Continue your journey at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a powerful and solemn tribute to the millions of Jewish victims of the Holocaust. As you walk through the labyrinth of concrete slabs, your guide will help you understand the symbolism behind the design and the profound impact of this memorial. Learn about the history it commemorates and the importance of remembering these events in today's world.
Your next stop is the Topography of Terror, a poignant and permanent exhibition located on the former site of the Gestapo and SS headquarters. Here, your guide will lead you through the exhibits that detail the rise and fall of the Nazi regime, offering a deep and sobering insight into the atrocities committed during this dark period.
Conclude your tour at Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most famous border crossings between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Here, your guide will recount the tense standoffs and daring escapes that took place at this historic site. As you stand at this symbolic checkpoint, you'll gain a vivid sense of the division that once split the city and the resilience of those who lived through it.

Benny was an excellent and knowledgeable guide. Most enjoyable and informative tour.
Really great experience with sandemans tour,we were a group of thirteen from 🇮🇪 and we had Mark from Bristol as our guide,he was really great and handled every question we threw at him,he made every significant monument so much more enjoyable when he told us what role it played in Berlins very deep history.Great way to spend a few hrs.Denis
Nir was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable, and informed us of many local items of historical importance concerning WW2, Hitler, and the Berlin Wall. The stories of the local people, as well as the Jewish Memorial visit were enlightening. We enjoyed the tour immensely, and it seemed to pass very quickly.
Very nice tour guide. The tour was the perfect length and he kept us in the shade. Overall a really positive experience!
Marcel is a wonderful guide. He could state the history very well and yet make it very interesting. One of the best local tours I ever had.
Marcel is a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable and easygoing. Never boring. With him, time flew by.
Great tour around Central Berlin with Marcel as our guide. He's very knowledgeable about the history of the city. The walk is around two hours but at fairly easy pace and visits some important and interesting places.
We had a tour with guide, Nir. He was an excellent tour guide, with many interesting wee facts. The pace was easy and the length was just right (around 2h). So.much significant history.
The best walking tour . Our tour guide was from Ireland he was full of information and character given the topics were sensitive at times. Loved it . Would go again . It is lots of walking so wear comfy shoes
Our guide was really knowledgeable and enjoyed sharing what he knew. He covered a lot of different eras including but no exclusively the Nazi era and the cold war years. It was my first visit to Berlin and it really helped me to make sense of the city's past. My one reservation was that he didn't seem to know how many people were in his group and didn't check that everyone was keeping up when they stopped to look at something or fell behind (he kept up quite a brisk pace!)
Excellent tour, enjoyable and knowledgeable - highly recommend taking this tour if in or planning to visit Berlin - Marcel was our guide and could not ask for better
We had a tour with Marcel in Monday afternoon. Despite it being cold, Marcel was warm, funny and very attentive We learned a lot of this experience and would thoroughly recommend it
Had a great tour with Marcel. He’s very knowledgeable and makes the tour interesting to everyone involved. Would definitely go on another tour or recommend it to anyone visiting Berlin.
Chris our guide was very informative, witty and knowledgeable. Highly recommended this walking tour. He gave a good insight on the history, stories and things to do in Berlin.
really interesting and informative tour of Berlin! Marcel was very friendly and knowledgeable! Highly recommend doing this tour!
Our guide, Nir, was excellent. Catered for everyone in the group Was knowledgeable and imparted information in a lively and engaging manner
Our guide, Gal, met us early at the designated spot. He was friendly, personable, and very knowledgeable. Despite the cold and rainy weather we all enjoyed the tour and learned a lot.
We’ve done 2 tours with Sandemans’s this week and Nir was our guide for both. Our tours were well paced, included unknown sights along with key landmarks and Nir had a lot of interesting information to add to our tours. Highlights of Berlin was a great introduction to the city and Jewish Berlin was also very interesting.
Worth the time and money! Saw multiple sites. Got very helpful and interesting insights. Stayed on schedule too! Our guide Nir was great!
I’ve been on free walking tours in many cities and this one was definitely one of the best. Simon was first class - interesting, engaging, a great story teller with humour. The 5 places we visited were fascinating and helped to give an understanding of German history. A really wonderful 2 hours on our first morning in Berlin
Marcel was a very knowledgeable guide, who was friendly and welcoming. He was enthusiastic and the group were totally engaged. Highly recommend this company and the walk.
Nir our guide led us on a very interesting and enjoyable 2 hour walking tour where we saw the main sightseeing highlights of Berlin. It was a great way to start off our city break and get our bearings. I would recommend it.
Good intro to Berlin’s Nazi history. We visit multiple sites within a few kilometers of the Brandenburg gate.
Our tour guide Ier was extremely informative and enthusiastic and kind. With an added bonus of stopping for coffee/toilet halfway through.
My wife and I took the tour, with Marcel as our guide. As a walking tour guide myself, I was very satisfied with the experience. The starting point was very easy to find, and Marcel was friendly and engaging, making everyone in our group feel welcome. We also appreciated hearing his backstory and connection to Berlin. Throughout the tour he managed the group well, spoke clearly and at a good speed, and it's clear he cares about and enjoys his job. He took questions very well and was always happy to chat. The tour itself was paced well, with stops that weren't too long or too short, and even included a café break of 10-15 minutes towards the end. While the break certainly didn't negatively affect the experience, I do feel that in such a fascinating city the time taken up by the break could have been used instead for another interesting stop and nobody would have minded. In terms of the content of the tour, I already knew that it would be impossible to fit all of Berlin's history into 2hrs. However, I do feel that perhaps a little more could have been mentioned about Berlin's pre-20th century history (that goes back originally to the 13th century). Of course I realise that there is very little left of any buildings from pre-1900s Berlin, but perhaps an introduction to the tour could be added that at least summarises the ~700 years before WWII, just to give the tour more context for those who know very little. As it was, aside from the first stop that covered the Brandenburg Gate, the tour was exclusively focused on the 1930s-1980s period. I do understand this is what most tourists are going to be most interested in, so this isn't a complaint at all, rather a suggestion, or maybe the tour could be retitled ("20th Century Berlin"). Like the tours that I give in my home city, this tour is not literally "free" but rather donation-based, so please be ready to tip the guide whatever you feel the tour was worth, as this is the only way guides like us make any money at all. €10 per person should be considered the absolute minimum tip for a good 2hr walking tour, and we happily tipped Marcel double this. Thanks for a great tour, keep up the good work, and maybe I'll see you on one of my tours someday...!
Juan took us on a free walking tour, we learned many new things, he is a great storyteller - engaging and easygoing. I highly recommend!
An excellent tour with Simon as our guide who was very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. We learnt so much and I can highly recommend.
Benny was fantastic! The tour was very informative, engaging and entertaining. We were taken around some of the most impressive sights in Berlin, and the information given at each was digestible and extremely interesting. I can highly recommend this tour.
This was an excellent walking tour, very informative and well paced, with a welcome coffee break. Our guide, Nir, was very knowledgeable and obviously enjoyed discussing his city. It was an excellent way to orientate ourselves to central Berlin and to learn more about this fabulous capital, and it's free - we paid only for tips for our guide, which we were very happy to pay as they were well earned. Highly recommended.
Stevie gave us a fantastic tour. She pitched it well at our mixed party of adults teens and a tween. Her historical knowledge added so much extra to the main sites and we couldn't recommend more highly. The method of a small registration fee and then tipping the guide works well - just make sure you have enough cash with you.
A friend who is a seasoned traveler recommended this tour. It was really interesting, a nice pace, we learned a lot and Marcel was an excellent guide.
I had such a great time with Nir. He was very entertaining and knowledgeable about Berlin history as well as current culture. I saw things I wouldn't have seen by myself and understood them better, Nir was also very open to questions and interesting discussions as well giving great recommendations
I highly recommend going on this tour with Marcel. It gives more details and insights about Berlin during the time of the 3rd reich; It was an expectedly heavy and serious tour that was packed with information. You can feel Marcel’s passion for this city and its history.
Marcel was an excellent guide who included his own personal stories of growing up in Berlin which was a great addition to the tour! Would strongly recommend anyone to do this tour. Thanks Marcel!
Cristibal did an amazing job of walking us around the main sites. He explained everything clearly, nothing was rushed and we learned loads of interesting information. A great tour that I would highly recommend and he deserved a good tip as payment at the end.
We did the tour with Marcel who was excellent. He had so much knowledge and was very interesting to listen to. I would highly recommend this tour!
Had high hopes for this having done lots of walking tours previously. Sadly this one did not meet our expectations. Paid the optional fee upfront but not sure what for. There were at least 40 people in our group (yes, there were 2 guides who had already split the group...,) no microphone so it was incredibly difficult to hear what was said, so got bored very quickly Realised days later that we had been at the Topography of Terrors museum (but only because we decided to visit on a different day) but on the tour we saw nothing of the installations, no walk through as mentioned. Tour ended before we even got to Checkpoint Charlie so we found that on our own. The Führer bunker is a car park, so no value in visiting whatsoever in my view! Very disappointing. Would not recommend Tour sold as max 25 people.
Marcel C took us around Berlin on a great tour. Very cold but very interesting. We didn't have cash with it being our first day in Berlin and banks being closed so I took our guides revolut link to tip when I got into WiFi range. Apologies Marcel, I tried multiple times with multiple different cards and it just keeps saying the details are wrong- I think this must be on your end!! Just to let you know we did enjoy the tour and we really have tried to pay!
Our tour with Juan was the highlight of our trip to Berlin. He was so knowledgeable and had clearly put a lot of thought and reflection into the content of the tour. Even kept my teenager engaged for the full 2 hours! Highly recommended.
Fantastic tour lead by Juan. We started at the Brandenburg gate and finished at the Berlin Wall. We walked for over 2 hours seeing and learning about Berlin and her history.
We did the free tour in Berlin with Gabriel. Excellent tour, very well prepared and explained. We loved it!!
It was very well explained and the guide was very good...but at the end of the tour we had to pay him (if I work according to him) and we had already paid previously...we should advise or inform this detail...otherwise very well everything
Poor tour where he took us only through 2 monuments leaving important monuments to pass through. I have done the same one years ago with the same company and it has nothing to do with it.
The guide Marcel was very well prepared, he could answer all questions, was friendly, nice and funny at all times. A great tour (in English and not as booked in German, but that was still mega good).
