Itinerary
Our tour begins by visiting the Bergen Fortress. When Bergen was the capital, this is where the palace was located. It's the best spot to start a walking tour!
We pass by Håkon's Hall, the major part of the medieval palace still standing today. Here you learn about Bergen's time as an independent country and we also explain Norway's unions with Denmark and Sweden. Please note that we do not enter Håkons Hall (it is a museum that costs money). On rare occasions, the fortress is closed due to a private event.
After learning about our royal past, we make our way into Bryggen. Bryggen is Bergen's UNESCO World Heritage-site and is where merchants have traded for 1000 years. It was made successful primarily by the Hanseatic League (the Hanse), a group of German merchants. We spend our time here learning about the Hanseatic League, their trading methods and systems, and how Bryggen functioned as a wharf. Please note we do not go in any of these buildings. They are all shops and small businesses today - none are museums.
Our last point in historical Bergen is St. Mary's Church, the oldest still standing building in the city. It was constructed in the 12th century and still functions as a church today. Please note we do not go inside the church as it has a separate admission fee.
After the history part, we head up-hill into the district Fjellsiden, which is a well-preserved area of wooden hours. We'll discuss everyday life in Norway, including what we eat, when we work, what a house costs, our taxes, and so on :) The route depends on your guide and their own interests. We pride ourselves on being a tour by locals showing local spots, so we choose the best route based on our interests.
We pass by the funicular station so you can know where it is. Here we talk about outdoor life and the importance of hiking culture in Norway. Note that we do not take the funicular! It would add an extra hour and 150 NOK to the trip. Also, it's best you go up at leisure. Maybe you want to go up for the sunset? Or maybe you want to go up to go hiking?
The last twenty minutes of this walk is spent discussing modern Bergen and our food culture. Bergen is, after all, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy! We make our way into the old town centre, walking along Skostredet - a popular street for restaurants.
We finish outside the fish market/tourist office in Bergen.

You won't regret taking this tour with a certified, informed, delightful local guide. Stories range from the Viking Age to contemporary tips about urban exploring and where to enjoy a unique pint (at Cafe Christian II). Take note that a few parts of the tour are hilly or involve steep steps. It's also a very good value for the money (I was there in the off season at the end of October). Because of the timing of my trip, there were only five total people in my group, aside from the guide.
Our guide was Nicholas and he was very approachable, clear and spoke at a good pace. I enjoyed the pace of the tour and what we learned around the history, trade, food, vikings. The recommendations at the end for food and drink were very helpful also.
Eirik, who grew up in Bergen, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about sharing the city’s history. The tour covered an impressive span of history, made especially engaging by Eirik’s personal experiences and firsthand accounts of life in Bergen.
A fab guide made all the difference. Rignor was entertaining and passionate about her country, its history and culture. She recommended restaurants which turned out to be spot on. Would highly recommend this tour. We did it in the pouring rain but if you are dressed appropriately, then it didn’t matter.
Great experience. Nicholas the guide was very knowledgeable not only about the history but also fitted the tour to our interests. He was friendly and had a good sense of humour.
On a sultry, rainy day in Bergen our host Rigmor was fantastic, great history and knowledge and pointed out all the things I look for on a guided tour including coffee, bakeries, restaurants and pubs ! Definitely recommend Rigmor !
What a wonderful way to explore the city. Maria was both knowledgeable and fun. Full of historical facts and local information. Maria was happy to recommend various places for food and drinks, which enabled us to use our time wisely. Definitely a great way to start a short break.
Eirik was a fabulous tour guide - very knowledgeable, friendly and amusing. The past and present tour was well worth doing, set at a good pace and taking us to places we would otherwise have missed.
Our tour guide, Rigmor, was the key to this wonderful tour. Knowledgeable and fun! She had a great way of explaining past eras without getting us lost in the facts. She also gave many suggestions for food options, even though this wasn't a food tour.
Had a wonderful small group tour with Rigmor. She kept the tour moving at a good pace with lively dialogue and retelling of Bergen’s past and present.
Eirik knows Bergen well and gave us excellent suggestions for places to eat and where to go. The tour was informative and fun. As promised by Daniel, our Oslo tour guide, we had rain two days out of the three we were here, but after the rain it cleared up and th sun was pleasant. Bring rain gear and take the Floibanen to the top of the mountain the view is spectacular.
I had a great 2 hours with Eirik on a small group walking tour around Bergen. The group was a good size and Eirik was very interesting a knowledge about Bergen and the broader history of Norway. Even in the rain, the tour was a great experience.
Walking tour in Bergen - fantastic! Janine was an exceptional guide… her local knowledge, history, dates was phenomenal… would thoroughly recommend you do this tour… and you’re on a winner if Janine is your guide! And by the way make sure you have an umbrella with you
We booked the tour pretty much last minute through the tourist information. We were a small a group with only six people including our guide. Our tour guide, Caterina, was amazing. She had a lot of humor and answered all of our questions with little anecdotes. The small group size was great as this way we could all ask questions without monopolizing Caterina‘s time and this way there was barely any wait time for everyone to catch up after taking photos.
Magda gave a interesting, informative, and entertaining tour - she was patient with our slow group and everything was presented in a clear way.
Our guide was fantastic! Lots of information and stories. She was animated! I like recommendations for restaurants and shops.
Small group, great opportunity to engage with the rest of the group. Lots of history delivered by an excellent tour leader
Friendly and knowledgeable guide. Sites are appreciated more once you learn the history behind them.
We enjoyed a friendly and informative walking tour of Bergen past and present with Rigmor our very knowledgeable and friendly local guide. She was fun and told us many interesting facts of not just Bergen but also Norway and other neighbouring countries and how Norway interacts through time with them. The tour was easy walking and we went over the allotted two hours as she had so many interesting facts and stories to relate. We were a small group of just 7 and so was easy to keep up and hear everything. Highly recommended…thank you Rigmor …. Whose English was better than ours!
Janine was an excellent guide. She brought the history of Bergen to life as well as offering insights into contemporary daily life
Great introduction to Bergen and historic Bryggan Janine was excellent nice walking pace .making sure we all kept up . Helped with photos
We had such a wonderful experience on the I Love Bergen walking tour with Rigmor! She did an amazing job showing us around Bergen and sharing the history and stories that made the city come alive. She was knowledgeable, engaging, and a fabulous tour guide. We truly enjoyed our time with her and loved learning so much more about this beautiful city. Thank you, Rigmor, for making our visit to Bergen so memorable! We highly recommend this tour! ❤️🇳🇴
Rigmor was my tour guide and she was amazing. The meet up location was easy to find. Rigmor had a lot of information to share about the history of Bergen and she was easy to have a conversation with as we walked around the city. As a solo traveler it was an enjoyable tour. Thank you!
Great experience, Janine was very knowledgable , friendly and approachable. Very open to questions, gave great tips for places to visit and great places to eat.
Neal was a very gracious and knowledgeable guide, a very nice and informal introduction to this wonderful city.
Had the best tour guide, Rigmore. She is so friendly and knowledgeable! My favorite city tour I’ve had so far. Worth every penny!
Eirik did an excellent job guiding our group around central Bergen, sharing loads of interesting history (enhanced by his own work at a local museum), plenty of personal favorite shops and restaurants, and thoughtful answers to any guest questions. Would recommend!
Nicholas was great! We enjoyed our tour with him as he was very knowledgeable. He had historical as well as current information. He was also funny and we had a great time!
The tour guide, Silke, was very knowledgeable about the history of Bergen and it was fascinating to learn things that we just hadn't been aware of. She was very easy to speak to and ask questions of. She had a good sense of humour which also helped. We felt that as well as historical facts we also learned about places to eat, bars to go to along with the best place for hot chocolate. Just remember to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella (October time)! You also need to wear comfortable shoes as there a bit of walking and some areas are quite steep (although Silke did check first that we were okay with that). Would thoroughly recommend this tour and felt it was great value for money with a very knowledgeable tour guide.
Knowing little about Norway, let alone Bergen, Dane did a wonderful job giving an overview of Norway and Begen, together with the buildings and streets that make up the Norway experience. Enjoyed his knowledge.
Perfect city tour! Maria was knowledgeable about many subjects and gave us a well rounded , well paced and fun tour of the city. Highly recommend!
What an amazing tour with Silke as our guide. Great time exploring Bergen and learning about the history. She gave lots of good recommendations about where to go, what to see, and eat for the rest of our vacation time there. It felt like Silke was our friend. Very sweet and personable.
Great trip walked around historic area of Bergen Great Guide JANINE My husband’s comment at end of tour , “ don’t normally like that but it was really interesting and glad I went “ so Janine I dont think you realise how good you were !! Lots of information and tips about the area - walked at nice pace And the sun shone in Bergen .
Our tour guide (Maria) was fantastic and fun. Although native Spanish native speaker, she was very fluent in English and Norwegian. Her architecture background also helped her better explain structure of the buildings.
Dane was an excellent tour guide. His expertise in the history of Norway and Bergen enhanced the experience tremendously. If I ever wanted to know more about Norway and the Bergen area, I would certainly ask for Dane as my guide. There's only so much history you can get in a two hour walking tour, but Dane did a good job of imparting his knowledge. It was an enjoyable two hours.
Erik was a wonderful guide. Very well done and you see many sites.
This was a great way to learn the history of Bergen and also to gain some insight on places to visit during our stay. Our tour guide, Janine, was excellent and very knowledgeable. Later that day we went to a restaurant she recommended and it was fantastic! This was a great introduction to the city of Bergen.
Excellent experience! We enjoyed it so much we were astonished when 2 hours had passed and we were already done. Our guide Eric was very engaging, funny and knowledgeable.
Helene was an in testing and informative guide on our small group tour through historic Bergen and Bryggen and was of the better guides I’ve been with in my years of travel. I recommend Helene and I love Bergen tours for any traveller wanting superior small group tour experience with hand picked guides.
This was a great tour in a beautiful city. The length was just right and we hit all the major spots. Small group tours like this one are far better because you can hear everything and ask questions when they come up. Nicholas, our guide was VERY knowledgeable and customized our tour based on the group's general interests/questions. He was also cheerful and had a good sense of humor, which kept us all smiling.
We really enjoyed our walking tour with Caterina. She was knowledgeable and very personable.
Neil led us on the Walk through Bergen Past and Present, and we loved it! Neil provided all of the important facts along with many fun and interesting stories. His life experiences led depth to tour, which we highly recommend.
Rigmor was excellent. So much to tell. So much knowledge. Wonderful guide in Bergen.
Very informative. We learned a lot about both Bergen and Norway. Magda our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and made the tour fun.
I really enjoyed this tour. It overlapped with things we had learned on other tours, but our guide, Barbara, helped me learn new things too! I recommend doing this on the first couple of days of your tour to get familiar with the city and its sights.
Guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The experience was great, even in the rain! We learned so much about the history of Bergen.
Caterina was a fantastic host and kept the tour fun and engaging despite the bad weather. We learned plenty about Bergen's history, along with some lovely tips for enjoying the local culture and food for the rest of our stay. Thanks, Caterina!
Comfortable walking tour , diversification of areas visited was well received. Guide Erik was entertaining and informative. Good tour.
Neil was a great guide. He had many stories and explanations and we learned a lot in our time together. Adapting the tour with his own experiences made the streets feel more real. Thank you Neil!
