Departure Point
- We will meet at the staircase leading up to the Bergen Tourist Information Center at Strandkaien 3, 5013 Bergen, Norway. The building is marked "Mathallen". Across from the meeting point is Hotel "Scandic Torget Bergen". Look for me holding a "City Walking Tour - Bergen On Foot" sign.
Itinerary
Part 1 - A walk through the city In the first part of the tour, we go for a walk through the lively centre of Bergen. On our way past the fish market, the theatre and the old fire station, we encounter personalities such as Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen. On our tour, however, I don't only want to bring you closer to the historical sides of the city, but also to the people of Bergen and their life in the here and now.
Part 2 - Bryggen and the German Hanseatic League The picturesque, colourful wooden houses in the Bryggen district are the symbol of the city. Today there are cafes, restaurants and bars among the houses, which are frequented by locals and tourists. 400 years ago, however, there was the smell of dried cod in the air, which was stored here. German merchants bought the cod from Norwegian fishermen and then exported it to all of Europe. This fish made Bergen the most important trading metropolis in Scandinavia at the time. On our way through the Bryggen World Heritage Site, I will tell you what made the fish so special, what the Hanseatic League was and how life for the German merchants played out here.

The 2 hour walk was very informative. It was a small group so we got to ask questions and get a more personalized experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. It poured rain the full two hours and I gather that is not uncommon in Bergen so dress appropriately and you’ll have a great time.
Martin did an outstanding ding job in the pouring rain. If anything, maybe he could speak a little louder😁
Martin is an excellent guide! His tour was interesting, informative, and often funny. He brought along photos that enhanced our understanding of Bergen history. We learned about contemporary Bergen, too. Super tour!
This was an excellent walking tour and great introduction to Bergen. Martin gave a real insight into the city and it's history. He also gave us some great recommendations for eating and drinking. On his advice, we tried the best and cheapest place for fish soup and a belting coffee shop. Thanks Martin!
Martin is particularly knowledgeable about the history of Bergen and the larger political history of northern Europe from the time that the city was settled. His tour and walk provided a great historical context to the sights we saw up to present day. He was personable and offered practical suggestions for ways to take advantage of Bergen’s food options.
Livia our guide was excellent and very knowledgeable! I highly recommend her!
Has a great tour with Martin. Highly recommend. Bergen is so fascinating the only way to get to understand it is with a great local guide.
Martin is a fantastic tour guide! He’s knowledgeable and engaging. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would absolutely recommend booking with him.
I love a guide who is only telling you a tiny portion of what he knows like the tip of an iceberg and then when you ask a question you see the other 9/10ths beneath the water. Martin was so knowledgeable and able to answer every question in depth. Has added hugely to our experience here; we learnt a lot! Highly recommended.
Excellent tour with small group of a dozen. Martin bought the history of Bergen and it's heritage alive.
Martin was very informative and engaging. We learned a lot about the history and culture of Bergen through his presentation.
nice experience got lots of interesting facts and tips
We loved our walking tour with Martin. Martin was really friendly and relaxed and gave us a great breakdown on the history of Bergen, from the fishing port, Hanseatic League, numerous 'fires' and musical composers Ole Bull, Edvard Greig and sculptor by the drummer from A Ha😊. We'd definitely recommend a guided talk by Martin for anyone thinking about it.
Competent and friendly guide who knows a lot about the city and likes sharing the stories.
Small intimate tour with like minded tourists wanting to learn about the history and notable landmarks of Bergen. Martin delivered with storytelling and connection with each of us. A few laughs were had and the group bonded through personal discussion along the way.

Great experience with a really great guide (can’t remember his name, but originally from England and a musician and song writer). We loved the stories and information as well as how eloquently it was presented. Learned a lot about this beautiful city. Would highly recommend!
