James our tour guide was amazing. Shared great knowledge and history about Belize and local foods and way of life. The temple tour was only a few small groups on a Saturday, one of the must underrated Mayan ruins where you get to climb on all of the pyramids. On the way back we got lunch at a local restaurant along the highway and was some of the best jerk chicken. Every table was full with locals and tourists, So good.

The Altun Ha Howler Monkey Excursion was canceled late afternoon prior to the day of excursion. If you are a solo traveler, cancelations are a risk. Fortunately, I was able to schedule the Lamanai excursion at the last minute to replace this. The Lamanai site also offered an encounter with the Howler monkeys.
Elvin was our guide and he was fantastic! He was so friendly and knowledgeable about the whole area, not just Altun Ha. Took us to a local restaurant, which had excellent food. The ruins are the closest ruins to Belize, not necessarily the largest, but we enjoyed it. Loved seeing the monkeys. We saw the whole troop. Would recommend!
Tour of Altun Ha and the Community Monkey Sanctuary was great! Our tour guide, Elvin, treated us like VIPs providing a personalized tour of the Mayan ruins with a thorough explanation of the history of the site. Then made sure we were taken care of at the monkey sanctuary with a close up encounter with the troop of howler monkeys.
Altun Ha Temple is a small but absolutely charming temple, it tooks one hour and half to visit everything. My guide was very well experiece, friendly and helpful, including his help to drop me off in the bus station and put me in the appropriate bus for San Ignacio. The Monkey Reservation guide is very pasionate about his work and he checked all the reservation till we found the best specimens. Both of them very dedicated, we spent a lovely day together.
Don’t forget your bug spray! We had a great guide, Cairo, who was very knowledgeable and fun. We’re glad we stayed an xtra day in Belize.
This excursion the best way to spend our 1 day in Belize. We visited while cruising and only had 8hrs at port and this was the best thing! Our tour guide picked us up at port, very helpful and guided us through the city. First stop was Altun Ha Temple. He was very knowledgeable and friendly making the time there so special. Next stop was lunch at a local spot that as a tourist we would have never found. Then we drove to the monkey sanctuary. This is where we met a cute troop of local primates that we were able to feed. The entire day was filled with one amazing lifetime experience after another.
We had an amazing experience with our tour guide Elvin. He was super knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information about the temple as well as local tips. We even stopped for some wine tastings on the side of the road! At the Monkey Sanctuary, Robert was our guide and he also was extremely knowledgeable about the monkeys and a lot of the birds we saw. Both experiences were incredible and highly recommended. I’d be sure to bring bug spray for both of these activities.
This was an excellent guided trip. ASK for Tarik as your tour guide, seriously. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. He treated us to some local cashew fruit and custard apple, local cashew and blackberry wine tasting, and of course the Mayan Ruins and Howler monkeys. He also knows the best spot for lunch. Highly recommend.
We were staying at the Belize River Lodge and had a day off from fishing, and they coordinated this tour for us. Erolyn was our driver, and she was wonderful,in addition to being a great driver! We visited the Howler Monkey Santuary, and we were able to see and learn about the monkeys and other flora & fauna in that area. The Howler monkeys were definitely close enough to see and hear. We then traveled on to Altun Ha, and we're able to visit the Archeological Site at our own pace without the pressure of a large tour group. Erolyn was a font of information, answering our many questions. We enjoyed our day with her. It was spectacular.
I have to be honest, I thought our day was going to be miserable. It was raining all day, hard. The folks at UpClose Belize really came through. Angie checked in on us with the pick up point and quickly responded to every email sent along the way. Our tour guide Elvin made all the difference in the world with his vast knowledge of Belize and all of the towns and villages we drove through before arriving at the temples. He described each area with a knowledge and passion like no other. Informing us of how things came about, local customs, as well as the local people living there. Once we arrived at the site, his knowledge of the Mayans and their traditions was absolutely amazing. He did not at any time seem like he was reciting from a script. This young man never faltered in his descriptions or in his knowledge even though the rains were drenching him to his very core. He stood proud of his knowledge and proud of the ancient traditions he described. The howler monkey part of the tour was also amazing with the vast knowledge of the local forest and indigenous plant life. Dwayne was very knowledgeable with the plant life as well as the local area. At first the monkeys would not cooperate as it was down-pouring during this as well. Eventually they came out to great their guest. It was great to see a small section of forest acting as a reserve for the howler monkeys that the locals seem to respect immensely. I would definitely recommend this tour and definitely recommend you book with UpClose Belize.
The tour was amazing, I could pet the monkeys in the jungle and visit Mayan ruins. Everything with amazing guides with lot of knowledge and amazing sense of humour! So it was great fun! Highly recommended
Impressive temple complex made even better by no crowds. Walk in the jungle was interesting and interaction with monkeys was very cute.
Incredible tour with Elvin today. The Mayan ruins were stunning and he was an excellent tour guide and host. The howler monkeys were awesome!
Great experience. Elvin was a great guide and was very knowledgeable. He was very laid back and funny and really made my day enjoyable. Altun Ha was nice to see and seeing the monkeys up close was something I won't forget. Our guide Robert at the sanctuary told us we don't always see the monkeys but he was able to find them and even get them howling my mimicking their noises.
Not great value for money as USD 135pp was just for transportation. Although our tour guide waa good, and altun Ha part good, the Howler Monkeys experience waa disappointing overall....
I very much enjoyed my visit to Altan Ha with the guide David. I was the only person on the tour so I was able to ask David as many questions as I wanted. Our arrival time at Altan Ha was perfect as the buses of cruise ship passengers were leaving as we arrived so we were able to explore the ruins at a leisurely pace without crowds. Davis shared the story of the Mayans and the history of Altan Ha. There was time to climb all of the temples where this was an option. The visit to the Howler Monkey Sanctuary was very fun! After a short walk through the forest, we found a family of monkeys in the trees, including a young monkey who was curious and approached us so we were able to get a good look at her. Mom and Dad were not far away and kept watch so I got a good look at them also. I highly recommend this tour! David was an excellent guide and I very enjoyed my day!
Norman was an incredibly knowledgeable guide. The archeological site was rather small but very interesting and we nearly had it all to ourselves. On the way we were even able to try some local fruit wine and get some fruit. The monkey sanctuary was also quite nice. Only walked around 10minutes until we spotted a small group of them. Make sure to bring your insect repellant!
Altun ha was great experience especially once you climb the steps to top of temple. Herbie was great guide, very informative, friendly and knowledgeable. Howler monkey sanctuary was less appealing, another guide named Russell assisted him there and after walking around for an hour listening to his calls, saw few monkeys but far up in tree and not much noise. Good experience and weather all in all.
Joey our tour guide was awesome!! He was very insightful, provided good insight and brought us to all the best spots
My tour guide Joey was hands down amazing! He started off by stopping at a natural wine spot ran by Vince… of course I bought some cashew and blackberry wine. We then went to the ruins and he was so knowledgeable about the Mayan error and since this was a solo trip I had all the time to ask him all questions even if they seemed silly to me. I went to Howler monkey sanctuary after and there I got to let the monkeys pet me 😂 and I also tried out termites 😅…didn’t know I was that daring! Overall my trip was worth it and I’ll book them again when I come back to check on the my Roey, the baby boy monkey I adopted 😊.
Norman was the best! Absolutely fantastic guide, we learned so much and could tell he was really passionate. We got a little lucky because we avoided the big tour busses so it was almost like a private time at the ruins and in the sanctuary. The monkeys came right up to us and we got some great pics. We even got to have lunch as a local spot in Belize city. Highly recommend if you're not looking for an all day adventure; we were able to make a 2:30pm flight to San Pedro so it was a perfect half-day excursion.
Jeevan took us and was an absolutely wonderful guide! So friendly and knowledgeable. 100% recommend.
Tarik from Upscale was an incredible and professional tour guide. Very instructive and informative. I really recommend this tour.
The tour which is a little longer than indicated is smoothly organized and went very well. Bring mosquitoe spray.
Herbert was our tour guide and he was the absolute best! Super knowledgeable and friendly. Would highly recommend! I've been on myan tours in belize before but this was the best! Thank you Herbert
The perfect last day in Belize! Our tour guide Tarik was knowledgable, super nice, and accommodating. The whole tour company was incredible for promptly responding to a late last minute request the night before to join another couple on a tour. I said I wanted to do zip-lining or go to the Baboon Sanctuary to see the wild black howler monkeys, and they said they weren't doing it that day, but they decided to change things around and make whichever one I preferred happen for me, which was such a pleasant surprise. I chose the Baboon sanctuary, along with Nohoch Che'en cave tubing and visiting the Altun Ha Mayan ruins. It was all beautiful and such a fun adventure for only $175! Not to mention, I was coming from Caye Caulker so it was a long day, but they gave me advice on which ferries I needed to and would be able to take, and Tarik made sure to get me back to my ferry on time while going everywhere I wanted to go! Truly amazing experience with this tour company. Don't hesitate to book with them!!
