Water Color Class In Beijing

We had a great time. I am not artistic by any means but I enjoyed the workshop. My daughter and granddaughter were with me and we all had a good time.

A really nice way to spend a free afternoon! My host met me as I walked into the lobby, and we walked to a nearby bookshop for the lesson. I’ve painted before but watercolors are new to me and I was surprised at how challenging this specific style of painting is! The lesson was a see-then-do style, and the teacher was very patient at repeating himself. We enjoyed some nice conversation over tea, and he sent me home with some brushes and practice paper, as well as a fan. Definitely recommend this intro to traditional watercolors—it made me better appreciate the calligraphy and paintings I saw on the rest of my visit!

We had a wonderful time at the watercolor class with Mr. Li. He was kind and very knowledgeable about Chinese calligraphy and water color. He also had a peaceful nature which showed in his teaching style. My daughter and I were lucky to be his only students during our session. We were given tea and lots of time to practice and create our art! We loved it. Highly recommend.

Richard was a great patient instructor who was on time and very kind. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours in Beijing.

Li will teach you the technique and teach you something about Chinese painting. Tea is provided, and you can concentrate fully on painting. He will help you so that your experience and your work will be truly amazing. He is attentive and wears his heart on his sleeve. I would come again.

Richard was very patient and communicated well! We learned some simple water color techniques and painted a lovely fan after practicing the techniques. It was very calming after 2 days of touring around crowded Beijing for 2 days.

Amazing experience, enjoyed it very much!! I got the taste of meditative lotus painting with water color and the lector is so so sweet. Very much needed stop after all the travelling chaos. Recommend :)

Well paced lesson in water colour lotus. It is a must try. You will have a very patient teacher that is nice to talk to and ask for help.

We had a very interesting time with Richard learning basic watercolour techniques with some Zen moments. Lots of fun suits everyone...not as easy as it looks!

My friends and I loved every minute of this experience with Richard! Richard was an amazing teacher. His patience and passion made the whole morning such a wonderful and relaxing experience. We were shocked to look at our phones and realize that 1.5 hours had passed in what felt like a blink. We are not tourists and have lived in Beijing for many years but this was our first experience with this Chinese art form. I would definitely recommend this class for tourists OR expats/locals. You definitely won't be disappointed!

He is a very kind teacher and it was such a peaceful experience drinking tea and painting, I loved every minute of it, if I was staying longer I would love to do it again. Everything went very well, it was a very relaxing activity we did with a friend. The teacher explained us well how to do it and added some very interesting cultural insights. We enjoyed it very much!

You get to use different brushes and colours. Richard, the instructor, is very supportive and guides you through the practice with calm and encouragement.

The class was really cool! The teacher is fun and i really had a great time! We had tea and we painted, first leaning how to do the lotus and then doing the whole picture!

I was the only student and the teacher was so patient with me! He spent more than 1.5 hours teaching me! I thoroughly enjoyed the class and would like to recommend newbies like me who are interested in Chinese water color painting to sign up for the class

When I was arriving, I was greeted by the most excited man named Richard who started the Hutong Calligraphy school. He told me that he would be the translator for my class, and that I was the only one participating today. Well, was I in for a treat! My teacher, Mr Sun Guanglu, not only a brilliant watercolour artist, but also a pyrography master where he burns his artwork into wood. I was so privileged to spend one-on-one time with him today in this workshop. The most incredible part of the whole experience was that he didn't speak English, yet the flow of the whole workshop just meant that I knew exactly what he wanted me to do and how he wanted me to hold the brush and the amount of ink he wanted me to use... ART IS THE MOST UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE AND I AM SO INSPIRED.

Amazing class, brilliant learnings and great fun. Mr Sun is a master artist and was so open to sharing his immense skills with us. Our water colour artworks were successful! Richard as assistant (who is incidentally a specialist calligrapher and teacher) was a fantastic host who ensured we had a fabulous afternoon. Absolutely recommended as an authentic cultural experience that is fun to boot.

Today we had a fun watercolor painting course. A very nice experience with a great teacher. It seems simpler than it is — or it doesn't. My lotus flowers clearly had their own vision: somewhere between a chicken leg and abstract expressionism. But as the teacher patiently explained — and he needed some patience — practice makes perfect. Literally, hopefully. Highly recommended if you are in Beijing, although you probably won't become Rembrandt in the first session. I certainly don’t 😉

It was a very pleasant experience, the teacher was nice and good. For those who have never taken a brush and do not know what Chinese painting and watercolor is. I already knew but it was still useful. She taught me how to paint the lotus and paint it on a fan which I then took home. During the lesson I was offered tea.

I took Chinese painting and calligraphy classes during my trip and it was an excellent experience. The teacher was very friendly and extremely patient. I speak little English, but the language was not a problem at all: it was enough to observe and follow its traces. I learned a lot and enjoyed every moment. Highly recommended for those who want to live an authentic cultural experience in Beijing.
