I had a fabulous evening on the Beijing food tour with Xiaoyan. We were a nice small group and that definitely helped, but Xiaoyan was a perfect guide. She made us feel welcome in Beijing, answered all our questions and took us to some great spots - one of which I went back to and the rest I wished I had time to go back to! The food was things I might not have otherwise tried; as a solo traveller it was good to get to try hotpot, but everything was delicious. Highly recommend.

Itinerary
Our walking culinary tours are designed to get visitors off the beaten path and into authentic local shops where they can eat shoulder to shoulder with locals. Since 2010, UnTour Food Tours has taken thousands of guests to our favorite mom-and-pop-owned shops. Beijing’s dinnertime cuisine is so much more than the crowded tourist markets featuring bugs and mystery meat on sticks! Instead, join our small group food tour and explore delicious, local dishes shoulder-to-shoulder with Beijingers in a traditional Hutong neighborhood. You’ll try authentic dishes that Chinese chefs have been perfecting for thousands of years, and learn about the history and culture of Beijing along the way.
Head deep into the hutongs with us as we explore some of the best food in the city. These wandering alleyways are bustling with local neighborhood life, and some of the best mom-and-pop shops are buried deep down the lanes.
Historians believe rice wine (mijiu) was first brewed by the Chinese in 1,000 BC. The rice wine method then spread from China to other parts of East Asia; in Japan it was made into sake, in Korea, cheongju and makkoli. We'll head to a modern, local boutique mijiu producer to try a six-cup sampler of their craft rice wine. The delightful flavors range from osmanthus to rose to the beguiling original flavor.
Meet your guide at the end of Guijie, or Ghost Street, and see why this is one of the most popular streets in the city to come to for snacks.

Unfortunately, due to flight delays, my sister and I missed about two-thirds of our Old Beijing food tour. Thankfully, Xiaoyan was incredibly kind and accommodating and allowed us to join the group for the final hour and three remaining stops. Even though we only experienced a small portion of the tour, we had such a nice time and really appreciated Xiaoyan’s hospitality. Untour was also very responsive and communicated with me promptly, providing the contact information and details we needed to meet up with the group. We will definitely rebook this tour the next time we’re in Beijing so we can enjoy the full experience! Highly recommended and a must-try for anyone visiting Beijing.
The experience was fantastic. Rita was very knowledgeable and took us to places that I would never have discovered without her. She also created a friendly atmosphere which lead to some interesting conversations. I'd definitely recommend this tour and would happily do it again!
Wonderful tour guides made us feel very comfortable
My boyfriend and I had a fabulous time on this tour! Such an interesting way to spend an evening, especially because our guide was so entertaining and informative. I don't remember her name but she was a Beijing native and schoolteacher---incredible tourguide. One of the highlights of our trip. All the food was fantastic and neither of us got sick (very important to me, as I am rather enthusiastic about food safety). Highly recommend doing this early in your Beijing trip so that you can go back to all these places again and get more food, like we did :)
I had a great time exploring the Beijing hutongs with Ruofan! She took us through the hutongs and made sure we were well taken care of at every stop. She also took the time to explain each dish we tried, which added a nice personal touch to the experience. The tour was a fun blend of delicious local eats and atmospheric spots, including a cozy stop for some rice wine. I also loved the pacing between savory and sweet. There’s really no better way to experience Beijing’s food and neighborhoods than this!
Had a great experience with Sian at the Old Beijing food tour. I was the only booking that day, and Sian carried out the full tour with an endless amount of enthusiasm. I enjoyed learning about the historical and culture significance of both the food and surrounding Hutongs. I also went back to the mijiu bar at the end of my trip to pick up some gifts for family and friends. I've done many food tours over the years, and this was the one I enjoyed the most. Thank you very much Sian. I would highly recommend the UnTour Old Beijing food tour with Sian!
Really good tour, especially the guiding from Xiaoyan! We had a great evening and enjoyed visiting some really cool spots. The tour is focused on Old Beijing and has some great spots in the Hutongs. Not all the stops were necessarily traditional Beijing dishes.
I am very well traveled (over 30 countries) and have done food tours and cooking classes all over the world so I’ve encountered quite a range of good to not so great experiences while “chasing food” and I would say that this food tour ranks among the most enjoyable and well put together food experiences across any that I can remember in the last 25 years - delightfully unpredictable or unpredictably delightful would be my caption. We spent the evening with Jesus and not only was he engaging and quite fun conversationally, he had put together very unique and unexpected approach to a culinary walk in Beijing and it far exceeded all expectations and I just can’t recommend him and UnTour strongly enough. I now can’t wait to go back to Shanghai and see what awaits me there with UnTour.
Rita and Jesus were fabulous hosts. A fantastic night wandering around trying very interesting foods
When we saw that the guide was named Jesus and found out he was American doing a Beijing food tour we were a bit sceptical. We could not have been more wrong. We have done multiple food tours in Asia and Europe and Jesus was far and away the best guide we have had - warm, generous, entertaining and very knowledgeable. There was an interesting combination of food experiences - not all to our taste but that is the point of a tour like this - and some great rice wine tastings which was unexpected but a highlight.
Excellent tour guide His Deep knowledge of the city, very friendly had a great time
We did a food tour with Jésus and Lime. It was SO much fun! Everything was organized meticulously. The food was delicious (and bountiful), and the company was excellent :) We were introduced to many foods we had never tasted before. I learned a lot and enjoyed every second. I left very full & happy! I would recommend this tour (with these guides!) greatly. Thank you Jésus and Lime!
We had a great experience on this food tour with Erik Chong. He was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who shared a lot of interesting information about Beijing, Chinese food culture, and local traditions throughout the evening. The tour had a really relaxed atmosphere and felt more like exploring the city with a group of friends than being on a typical guided tour. There was a great variety of food, drinks, and places we visited. We got to try many different local dishes that we would never have found or ordered on our own, and the selection was well balanced. We have been on many food tours around the world, and this was definitely one of the better ones. We would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and authentic food experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first Untour Food Tour and Xian was an excellent host full of interesting and funny background stories.
Great tour! I learned a lot and tried new things despite having lived in China before and having been pretty adventurous with trying food then. I also better understood Chinese culture better from what our tour guide shared. When I am back in Beijing I hope to do this again and would also like to try some of their other tours.
Had an amazing food tour last night with Untour Beijing. Sian was such a great guide — super patient, passionate, and really thoughtful with everyone’s dietary needs and preferences. Loved how she explained the history behind each dish and showed us around parts of Beijing too. The hand-cut noodles with fresh garlic were unexpectedly one of the highlights of the night. Highly recommend this tour if you’re visiting Beijing. Two thumbs up!
Jesus and Sian were incredible hosts. So knowledgeable and friendly. I loved this tour SO much, would thoroughly recommend it. We had a group of 16 people, and had the best time. Would never have known about some of the treasures we stopped at had it not been for their knowledge and relationships with the vendors. Thank you for the memories!!
Awesome trip into areas of Beijing a tourist, without a guide, would not see. We experienced hidden away gems. Great food, drinks, and our English speaking tour guide made for a memorable night. Highly recommended.
We had a fantastic experience with Sian! She was friendly and provided lots of information about the food we ate and the history around it. At the end, we were also given tips and various recommendations about the food scene in Beijing which proved invaluable. Overall, we had a great time and I would highly recommend the tour.
Nice mix of 7-8 stops. Enjoyed the mix across the venues of larger plates, nibbles, rice wine, yoghurt etc which showcased some of the food & drink options in the hutongs. Appreciated Sian sending the list the day after of where we’ve been and what we’d had! Sian is a friendly and informative host who judged the group of 8!well. It was a pacy evening out of necessity so if you like to sit and enjoy long discussions over food then this may not work for you. Chinese wine is gaining momentum to this is suggested as an option for consideration for the future. Thanks to excellent pre-tour responses from Unfood I knew this was not an option so expectations were managed well. Overall, a fun night out and a nice experience to share with other travellers. Thank you.
What an amazing experience! I would 100% recommend this food tour. Our guide Jesus was so knowledgable and passionate about Beijing and this really shone through on our food tour. We had so much fun and got to experience the kind of places you wouldn't go to without someone 'in the know'. The food (and drink!) we tasted was incredible and Jesus followed up with more recommendations for us to visit during our stay, all of which were excellent.
Good fun, good food and takes you off the beaten track. A great evening out. Highly recommend.
What a lovely way to explore a small bit of a city the size of Beijing which has such a rich gastronomic history and range. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves wandering around, sampling so many goodies along the way.
This is a well planned night out. Plenty of food and drink is provided. Everything was delicious. There was a good variety of food and local restaurants visited. The guide was friendly and was willing to answer all questions from the group. We would highly recommend this tour.
Good fun. Food was great. I was adventurous and tried the “Burger”. We had a lovely group and our guide was a ⭐️
I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful evening with Yan and my fellow travellers (from Canada) where we were spoilt with delicious food aplenty across a wide range of flavours!
Such an interesting and enjoyable couple of hours visiting a well chosen collection of little local shops, bars and restaurants sampling all sorts of different things. Jesus is a really engaging guide easily sharing his love of food and Beijing
We did the Old Beijing Dinner Tour on our first night in Beijing and it was a great introduction! Eric was our guide who was very friendly and knowledgeable, not only giving use information about what we were eating, but also about the different areas we went to, and about living in Beijing. We tried all different types of food and it was very well paced so you didn't feel super full at the end even though we had eaten a lot! We also went to restaurants we would never have found (or been brave enough to try) on our own. I would definitely recommend Eric and this tour - from the experience we had it was definitely worth the money.
What a night!! What a great experience. Awesome food awesome drinks awesome people in the group. Eric our host is a great fellow!! He made it soo interesting and soo special. Great guy with a great sense of humor, he knows the area very well and he has got great stories too. Thanks Eric again, we were so impressed with the dinner tour with you!!
Xiaoyan provided a fascinating insight into what tasty foods Beijing has to offer. Taking us places that we would certainly not have found ourselves. Friendly and interesting conversations had all evening
We had an amazing time on the UnTour Beijing food tour! Our guide, Jesus, was fantastic—his deep knowledge of the history behind the neighborhoods we explored made the experience even more meaningful. I especially loved learning about the different dishes we tried along the way. My husband and I enjoyed it so much that we even returned to a few of the restaurants later in our trip. Thank you for such a memorable and wonderful experience!
Family of 4 - grandma, brother and 10 year old son and we all had a great time. Book and you’ll have a blast!
My guide Xiaoyan made my night unforgettable! Not only she showed me a variety of fascinating food and drinks, but also shared history of the Hutong, which gave me a better understanding of the city. Thanks to Xiaoyan, she was very friendly and caring, the three hours just flew by. I couldn't recommend this tour highly enough!
First time visiting Beijing and my wife found the Untour experience amazing! Our guide, Jesus, was extremely knowledgeable and led us on an amazing food and beverage experience! We would highly recommend anyone visiting Beijing to experience this marvelous and fun event. Thanks Jesus!
I had a really great time on Xiaoyan’s Beijing food tour. We tried awesome local dishes like hand-pulled noodles and Beijing-style BBQ, and everything was delicious. But the best part was Xiaoyan herself. She was so warm and friendly right from the start, and she made the whole experience fun by sharing little facts about the food and culture like why the noodles are made a certain way or how BBQ became a Beijing street food favorite. Nothing felt like a boring history lesson; it was just cool, easy-to-digest stories that made the food taste even better. Honestly, Xiaoyan made the tour feel like hanging out with a friend who just happens to know everything about great food. She was super welcoming, laughed with us, and made sure everyone felt comfortable asking questions or trying new things. By the end, we weren’t just full we felt like we really got a taste of everyday Beijing life. If you want a fun, chill food tour with a guide who genuinely loves what she does, go with Xiaoyan. You won’t regret it.
Amazing tour. It was so fun exploring the hutongs and learning about the history of the city. The food was varied, my partner was well accommodated as a vegetarian. There are some truly unique experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise get to experience outside of the tour. Sian was a great guide, lovely to chat to and super knowledgable
I always try to do at least one food tour when I travel, and this one in Beijing was easily one of the best I’ve ever done. Jesus was incredibly knowledgeable and spent a full 3 hours explaining everything with so much passion and energy. You can really tell he loves what he does. The food lineup was amazing too — from super traditional dishes to street food and even some more modern spots. It felt like a perfect way to experience the different sides and vibes of Beijing. Huge thanks to Jesus for such a great evening, food, and memories. If you’re on the fence about booking this tour, just do it — you won’t regret it.
We had an amazing time with Siang Li. She is very knowledgeable and took us to incredible places. We loved the food and the time spent togheter. Highly recommended!!!
Jesus was amazing. He knew the restaurants and specifically the meals very well. Also, he let us very comfortable with the timing at each restaurant and everything. And, the most important: the food were just great. Marvelous experience. Definetely a must go.
During the 3-hour food tour, Shan gave us very interesting insights about Chinese cuisine, the Hutons, and China in general. It was one of the best tours I have ever taken.
Joining our knowledgeable guide Jesus was a great experience! He showed us spots in the Hutong I’ve walked right past without noticing before. The tour shows a good balance of food tasting, fascinating stories and lots of laughs. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a deep dive into Beijing’s Hutong culture, because let’s be honest, I'd never discover this side on my own :D
Great knowledge of hutong area and the right balance between funny and teaching. Great food choices which show the hkcharacter of Beijing but also the guide
With no spoilers…. Youll have a great time. Just do it. Delicious food, great authentic spots you’d never end up at otherwise, interesting guide. What more could you ask for.
This ended up being a private tour after another guest was unable to attend - Garth did a great job explaining the various dishes, their origination, and the specific stories of the restaurants/chefs involved. The food was great with the noodles and crepes being my favorites
This was one of the memorable evenings I had on my China trip. We lucked out by getting Garth Wilson as our guide . He is an amazing storyteller with very deep understanding of history , culture and of course food . He gave us great context to the food we had , so the experience was far greater than just tasting new flavours. In 3 hours we were hanging on to every word he uttered, as we zig zagged through the hutongs , stopping by at joints and restuarants that on our own, I would never find.
I had a great time and ate foods I wouldn’t have tried otherwise. Garth is a very kind person, very well prepared and shared his extensive knowledge about Chinese history. Thank you for a great night! ☺️
This Beijing night food tour was unforgettable! Garth guided us through lively alleys, sharing great stories and leading us to unique flavors and authentic spots. His energy and expertise made the whole experience special. An evening full of surprises and tastes!
This is actually the 2nd time I've gone on this particular tour, with Garth as my guide both times! Yes, I enjoyed it so much the first time, I decided to join again on my subsequent trip to Beijing. From Old Beijing-style lamb hot pot to jianbing to spicy chicken wings, all the food is delicious and covers a great variety of local dishes. Garth is a fount of interesting information about the cuisine and local neighborhoods (and he provides a goodly amount of alcohol for those interested:). You also get to meet some nice fellow-travelers! I cannot recommend this highly enough - especially if you would otherwise feel a little bit intimidated walking into/ordering in the small local joints by yourself.
I did this tour when I was visiting China for the first time with my mum, and it was an amazing experience! My only regret was doing it on our last day in Beijing, as we discovered some really nice restaurants where we could have gone back to eat again if we had had more time. Garth was a fantastic guide and host — his explanations were very detailed and easy to follow, and he created a really nice and friendly atmosphere. The other participants were also very kind and pleasant. The tour length is just right, as you get to try several traditional dishes while walking a bit between each stop. I really recommend this tour to anyone who wants to discover traditional Beijing (and northern Chinese) food with clear explanations about history and culture in a warm and friendly setting!
