Tony is an excellent tour guide: personable, bilingual, knowledgeable, and experienced. The time went quickly and I got so many amazing photos of the Wall and its scenic surroundings. My friends are amazed I got pics of me alone on the wall!! I highly recommend Tony’s tours, wish I had more time to do more of them.

Original Great Wall: This Great Wall located in northern Huairou district of Beijing. It is the only lakeside Great Wall in Beijing. About 80km away from airport. It is one of the top destinations for a Great Wall hiking tour and camping base. As this part of Great Wall is more original and no cable car there, so visitors should be in good physical condition.

This experience with Tony was amazing! He made everything so easy from pickup to drop off, the thought of bringing snacks and waters for us as well! His English was great and he provided insight on the Great Wall, Chinese culture, and as a Beijing local, he was even able to send us some reccomendations for restaurants as well. The vehicle was clean and big enough for our luggage as well! Tony knew it would be busy on the May Day holiday and took us to another spot of the wall instead! There were not many people at all! He took great care of us!
Excellent option for an 8hour layover in Beijing! This was my second tour with our wonderful guide Toni. He makes the entire experience seemless with great communication and advice on what to do to ensure we got through quickly and maximised our time at The Great Wall. I couldnt recommend Toni enough! Absolute bucketlist moment.
Very well organized. Our guide Shane was pleasant and proffesional. Amazing views. Definately recommend this tour. Best to arrive early at the time of opening to avoid crowds.
I have been in touch with multiple tour operators for a stopover tour but communication with Tony was actually making progress. A pickup from the hotel, a tour right at the opening time of the wall and a drop-off at the airport.
Tony was a fantastic tour guide. We had a wonderful experience visiting the Great Wall. Tony’s communication with us before and during the trip was 10/10. He was knowledgeable and easy to get along with. The day felt very safe and visiting the wall was a once in a life time opportunity!
Fantastic tour to the Great Wall during a layover in Beijing. Our flight arrived an hour early and Tony came to the airport early as he checked the flight arrival time, so we left earlier than scheduled to maximize the time we could spend on the wall before sunset. We had a great journey there and back, the car and the driver were great. Tony came up to the wall with us, which was great as we had a lovely chat, he shared some stories and took amazing photos of us at sunset. Communication before the trip was good as well, Tony shared instructions on getting out of the airport and obtaining the visa waiver, which was a lot quicker than I thought, there was no queue. The whole trip was about 5 hours and we got back with plenty of time to spare until our next flight. It's doable in 4 hours as well, as you can decide how far you want to walk on the wall (within limits of course). Overall, this was a great tour, and I would totally recommend you book Tony's tour!
Fantastic tour and highly recommend to anyone who has a 10hour plus layover at Beijing Capital! After getting a visa and clearing customs Shane greeted me at arrivals and we set off to the Great Wall. On the drive Shane provided some history of the wall. The Great Wall site we visited had a stunning mountain backdrop and good amount of wall to explore and plenty of good photo opportunities. After a couple of hours of exploring we headed back to the airport feeling refreshed and slept like a baby on the next leg of my journey. Highly recommend this tour especially to anyone wondering what to do with a 10-12 hour layover.
Great host and amazing views! A truly unreal trip and easily doable in a 8-9 hour layover. So worth it, would highly recommend!
Even if quite expensive, the tour was perfect. The guide picked us at airport, communication through Viator worked well (we have all on Google, which is not acessible in China - the same like Facebook - so we needed to choose ths channel). He brought us to the reconstructed part of the Wall. It is in the mountains norhen of Beijing. The weather was king to us - it was a sunny day, even if cold, walking over the wall top was fine. The breathtakong views, supported by the blue sky shown us the wall in its whole monumentality. Even if we walked only short part of it, the the trace of the (partially reconstructed) wall in the mountains had been seen both directions where we were able to see. It told us how giant construction the wall had to be. After approx. 5 hours we returned to the airport. Thank you our guide.
This was a great tour! My guide Shane was AMAZING! And spoke great English! He talked to me the entire way and even helped me learn some Chinese! He was very kind and Tony has been great responding to my many e mails! Highly recommend!
My girlfriend and I had an 8 hour layover stop in Beijing on our way home from Thailand. Rather than camping out in the airport, we decided to research what options we had for visiting the Great Wall. This tour group had some of the best ratings, and after having done the tour, it is obvious as to why! Right after booking, I received detailed instructions how to navigate the airport and where to meet our guide! (We were actually given phone, text, email contacts for any questions we had. Once we made it through the airport, we were greeted by our amazing guide, Michael. Michael really made this layover trip amazing! Being that we were just in Thailand and didn’t have warm clothes for the cold weather, Michael supplied us with warm jackets to ensure that our tour was comfortable. During the tour, he not only spoke on the history of the wall, but also about Beijing and Chinese culture, and took a TON of photos for us! Next time I visit Beijing, have a long layover, I will DEFINITELY do this tour again.
My boyfriend and I were flying back to the US from Thailand and stumbled upon this amazing experience. I was a little hesitant at the idea of leaving the airport on an 8 hour layover, but they give you every detail of what you need to do. They even have jackets for you if you’re traveling without one. Michael was an AWESOME guide. He made the entire experience effortless and is very knowledgeable. He also knew where to take all the good pictures, we left with tons of amazing photos. I can’t say enough good things about Michael, and the Great Wall Layover tour. Definitely do it if you have a long enough layover!!
Our layover to Beijing was in the middle of the night so there was not much we could do. We really wanted to see the Great Wall, and this was one of the only companies that offered a sunrise tour. The Airport Layover Tour company was quick and responsive to our inquiries and organized the perfect tour for us! We absolutely loved it. They gave us every detail we needed to get through immigration, the driver and tour guide were punctual (we got in early and they were already there!), and Tony was a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. We would highly recommend this experience. Thank you so much Tony!!
My girlfriend and I booked this trip in November 2019, because we were on vacation in the Philippines with a flight from Germany via Beijing. Since the layover time was about 8 hours we googled some Great Wall Tour Operators for our time-frame and found/booked this Airport Layover Tour. We can highly recommend this tour to other interested tourists. Our tour guide picked us up (in time), we drove about 1h30 to the Great Wall. After a small hike up to the wall, we spent about 2 hours at the Great Wall. It was an awesome experience. Tony was very friendly and supportive, an awesome guy!
We were so happy that we chose to do this experience on our 8-hour layover! Everything worked out perfectly. I confirmed via WhatsApp and got thorough instructions with pictures on how to get out of the airport and meet Shane. He was a terrific guide who spoke excellent English and made our day pretty incredible. We were the only people on that section of the wall that day and it was so memorable to have it all to ourselves! Shane was great about helping us get some great pictures and watching the time and getting us back in the car because we could have stayed all day. We arrived back and the airport with plenty of time to get through security and immigration again and catch our connecting flight. I highly recommend this tour if your timing allows!
I decided to do a layover trip one day before my flight, reached out to Tony the night before, and he helped me to seamlessly arrange all the details of a visit to the Great Wall. They even provided me and my mom with winter jackets for the excursion! It went extremely smoothly, Jessica was a phenomenal guide, and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy my 12-hour layover. Highly recommended.
Definitely I recommend this tour. Amazing experience and feelings being on the wall. Tony is a great tour guide.
What a wonderful way to end our trip to China - watching the sun rise over the Great Wall. Jim was an absolutely wonderful guide - easy to understand and very knowledgeable. He picked us up at our hotel at 5am, and then was kind enough to drop us off at the airport - even walking us in and giving us directions. We highly recommend this tour!!
I am so happy that we booked this layover tour! Tony was an incredible tour guide! If you have a layover at the Beijing airport you should definitely take advantage of this tour opportunity! My husband and I were returning from our honeymoon in Thailand and we wanted one more adventure. This was perfect and we loved every moment! Tony shared the history of the wall and the region with us. He is an incredible photographer and knew all the best places to take photos. We have so many memories captured thanks to him. The hike to the wall wasn't very long and we felt so fortunate to have the whole trail to ourselves. I am so happy we chose the less touristy part of the wall! We had the entire place to ourselves and were able to relax, take it all in and truly enjoy the experience =) Thank you Tony!
Tony was a great guide. He speaks perfect English, is very knowledgable, and we had a great time. I highly you try to get here for sunrise, it's beautiful, and very quiet. We were the only people on the Wall when we visited.
My friend and I had a 6-7 hour layover. Our flight was delayed by 90 minutes and Michael was awesome enough to wait for us! One of my favorite parts of my trip was his tour of the Great Wall! He took us to a non touristy part which I truly appreciated. Be sure to be ready for an uphill hike (don’t wear flip flops)
We had a 24-hour layover in Beijing and wanted to make the most of it, so we decided to book a day tour to the wall. Our guide, Michael, picked us up directly from our hotel at the time we requested. It was just us for the tour, so Michael was very flexible and accommodating. He brought us to a “wild” portion of the wall. A little dirt trail brought us to the wall and moderate intensity hike brought us to the top of the section we were on. Michael was very patient with us, as we are not in the best shape. He went at our pace and very graciously made many stops to allow us to rest. The views were beautiful and the Wall was nearly unoccupied, making for a peaceful, pleasant experience. After making it back down, Michael brought us back to the airport and even helped us bring our luggage into the airport. He was very personable and knowledgeable throughout the trip. We would definitely recommend this tour to others.
Wow what a great tour! We are so happy that we booked this tour We visited a part of the Wall with no other Tourists. Standing alone on the wall feels really impressive. Thanks again Tony for making this a memorable day!
This Layover Tour was absolutely amazing. Thanks to our Tour Guide Sheng, we visited a part of the Wall with no other Tourists. Standing alone on the wall feels really impressive. The Company helped us with the 24/144 Visa. We got all the Information we needed via Mail. This helped a lot. The Great Wall is a glorious Monument, and a Moment to remember.
This was such a wonderful way to spend a 13 hour layover. Tony was really easy to work with and the directions were easy to follow. Moko was a wonderful driver and host. He arrived on time, was able to answer all of my questions, and got me back in plenty of time for my flight back to the US. The Great Wall itself was amazing as was the surrounding mountains as well as the cable ride up and the toboggan ride down! I would highly recommend doing this on a long layober.
This was an amazing experience, and the guide was excellent! Highly recommend doing this tour on a Beijing layover. However I had several issues with service that could be improved. I never received instructions or further details until I called to request them the day before the trip (they then came over email). The instructions indicated that I would meet my driver on exiting baggage claim, and I notified Tony that this would be approximately 6am. Despite this, with my flight landing 20 minutes early, I had to wait ~90 minutes outside the Terminal for the driver and guide. Although not a terrible wait, this was frustrating for several reasons: (1) The tour company should be prepared and send drivers early to airport (2) For a tight layover tour (my layover was 8hrs), 90 minutes of waiting can cut out a significant chunk out of the tour time, and preparations should be made to maximize use of these short layovers. Despite this, the tour was still great and the section of the Great wall we went to was absolutely beautiful - we had the wall practically all to ourselves and excellent views.
Tony was absolutely awesome. This is my first review after many trips. The reason I am writing this is to make aware how great the attention to detail they give you when you step off the plane. All instructions are sent over via email from the steps to get your Visa for the day. I would absolutely feel comfortable using this company over and over on any future trips. Thanks again Tony for making this a memorable Bucket list highlight!
Prompt reply to email queries. Detailed pre-arrival information. Including tips on getting the transit visa. That gave me good first impression. The tour. The driver plus our guide (Sherry); both are friendly, relaxed, polite and knowledgeable. We opted for a good English speaking guide, we got exactly that. They would suggest on other things that you can do on the trip (other attractions, shopping etc) but they would not push or insist if you just politely decline. The wall... speaks for itself. We were lucky, the weather was perfect and since it was off season, we managed to get a few of those "we-are-the-only-one-around" shot. Simply put, breathtaking! From start to finish.
This was an amazing tour! The instructions for getting through customs to get the 24-hour visa was really clear and took a lot of stress off of us, especially after getting off of a 13+ hour flight. The tour guide, Lily, was prompt with picking us up at the airport. During the drive to The Great Wall she gave us history about The Great Wall which was really nice. The experience at The Great Wall was breathtaking. Words and pictures cannot describe how amazing it was. We did a short hike up to the wall and spent about an hour up there. We were dropped back off at the airport with enough time to get through security. For anyone that has a 4-5 hour layover in Beijing, I would highly recommend!
This tour was fantastic, from start to finish. My wife and I and a friend of ours were traveling through Beijing on transit from Seoul, Korea back to the states. We had a 20 hr layover from about 4pm on a Sunday to 12pm on Monday. Ahead of time we knew that we were landing in the airport too late to do the tour the same day that we arrived, so instead we scheduled to have our tour guide, Mike, pick us up from our hotel we were staying at early (5:20AM) on Monday morning. It was about a 1.5hr drive from the hotel (we stayed at the Beijing Prime Hotel) to the portion of the Great Wall. On the drive there, Mike told us a lot of history about the city of Beijing, and about the Great Wall itself. His English was very good and we enjoyed talking to him very much! The drive itself had some pretty beautiful landscapes, and we had the opportunity to drive through some small villages in the country side. On arrival to the great wall we had the opportunity to use the bathroom (very primitive and no toilet paper, essentially a hole in the ground surrounded by 4 cinder-block walls, very authentic to say the least) at a restaurant at the base of the wall before we started the trek up. Mike actually paid the restaurant owner 10 yuan for us to use them. The hike up the wall itself is NOT for the faint of heart. For some clarity, we are all in our mid 20's and it was quite the exercise. VERY STEEP. This definitely added to the whole experience though, because the part of the wall we were hiking on is about 600 years old, untouched. Breath-taking literally and figuratively. Absolutely bring hiking shoes/proper tennis shoes with treads, and also consider eating something during the car-ride there. We had not eaten anything before-hand and regretted that. Mike took very candid pictures of us as we walked up the wall, and when we got to the highest point (took about 30 minutes, stopping a couple times along the way) we had a chance to take some short videos and more posed pictures. We were lucky that someone had actually left a bike at the top of the wall that we got to ride on (whoever carried that thing up there is a champ!). The hike back down was much easier, but we had to be careful because certain portions of the wall are quite slippery. We drove from the wall directly to the airport (took about 1.5 hrs) and had more than enough time to get through security and grab something to eat before our flight home. All in all a 5 out of 5 stars experience. Absolutely recommend it.
Last month My husband and I had a 9 hour layover in Beijing. It was a first for both of us. We are typically not organized tour type travelers, but due to the short amount of time, we booked this layer private tour. We received the voucher upon booking with clear instructions. We did not receive a followup email. The night before our booking, I called the number on the voucher, To my surprise an english speaking Man Tony answered, he was clear and polite. Tony assured me that our guide would meet us at the airport, upon our arrival. By chance our flight arrived one hour early, again I called , and sure enough within five or ten minutes our guide met up with us at the coffee bar. Sherry was our guide , her English was amazing. on our drive to the Great wall, she gave us information and history about the wall and China . When we reached " The Wall" she again was very informative and took many photos of us on the wall. We are so very pleased with our experience. Clearly this company knows how to treat visitors. We can't wait to return and explore more of Beijing. Thank you Sherry you were terrific!
I extremely loved the experience. The information on getting out of the airport was on the dot. Tony was excellent with the communication . And lastly the tour guide was awesome had good knowledge of the area and history he joined us on the trek which was really sweet. Thanks team I had a wonderful experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Best use ever of a long layover! My husband and I had an 8-hour layover in Beijing, which gave us about 4 hours to get to the Great Wall and back, since it took us almost two hours to get through immigration/customs/visa, and our guide made sure we made it back in plenty of time for our connection. We are so glad that we did this tour!!! I was a bit stressed that something might go wrong or the tour would be a disappointment, but we took the chance and I am very glad we did. Even though our time was short, it was well worth the time and money to be able to hike on the Great Wall! Tony was very helpful in setting up the tour and his pre-travel instructions were excellent, although we did have a little trouble finding the desk to get our visa to leave the airport. Even so, we were able to get through and meet our driver, Robert, right on time. Robert was very punctual and very helpful, everything was just as we had been led to expect. The car was nice, very clean and comfortable, and Robert had even brought walking sticks for us to use, which ended up being very helpful as the "wild Great Wall" tour was quite steep! We loved feeling that we were seeing a less touristy part of the Wall...there were only about 10 other people total while we were there. I would highly recommend this service, and this particular tour as well, although I can't compare it to the main tour at the Great Wall. The drive there was about an hour-and-a-half and I enjoyed seeing the scenery very much...as all of it was outside Beijing, my impression was of a peaceful and serene countryside! Beautiful roses and trees. The Great Wall itself was spectacular. Definitely you need to be in good shape for this particular tour, however, as it is a 5-minute scrambly hike up to the Wall, and then the Wall itself is quite steep (we were glad to have the hiking sticks). I would recommend having sunscreen handy (I didn't). Also we got quite hot and sweaty trekking up to the top of the hill, so we were glad that we had a change of clothes with us at the airport, and that there are shower options there, since we still had a 13 1/2 hour flight from Beijing. Great experience, great tour and company!
I loved this experience. It sounds like a bad idea where everything could go wrong. I was worried about getting ripped off, or getting stuck the mythic Chinese Traffic or something weird with customs. But the trip could not have been smoother. Our driver, Robert (probably a nick name), did a fantastic job of avoiding traffic and keeping us on schedule. So it ended up being an amazing, STRESS FREE trip. If you are even considering doing this then YOU HAVE TO DO IT!
The pre-travel instructions were excellent, and we found our guide, Robert, without any trouble. The ride was very comfortable and enjoyable. We loved all the blossoms on the trees as we worked our way through the rural back roads to get to the wall. We took the chairlift up, then walked up and down thousands of stairs, but it was totally worth it. The apricot trees were in bloom along the wall, which made for some pretty photos. Once we had our fill of stair climbing, we rode the toboggan down. That too was a lot of fun, definitely one of the longer toboggan slides I've been on. Robert went above and beyond. When he found out that we were actually staying in Beijing for a couple of days, he instead took us to a subway station rather than back to the airport, and went in to help us buy subway travel cards that we could use during our stay... certainly more than we were expecting, and definitely very helpful. Thanks for making it a wonderful experience that we will always remember.
It was really very smooth and pleasant visit to Great Wall......car was very clean and comfortable....driver was very kind and cooperative with us.....thanks tony for making our visit smooth and memorable.
The layover tour was fantastic, and Toni a great guy. The unexpected 8-hour transfer in Beijing was a downer, but in retrospect immensely grateful. Absolutely recommended!
I had a total of 11 h stay in Beijing at the beginning of January (6-17 h) and booked the "authentic great wall tour" for this time. That alone is a bit expensive (about 270 dollars), but I don't regret a dime. Manager Tony has answered me very patiently in advance all questions, after booking I got a very precise description of how to get out of the airport etc. (as it is absolutely chaotic at the entry desk and hardly any English is spoken - worth gold. It took me about 1.5 h to get out). I was then picked up on time at 8.30am and was back at the airport around 1pm. My guide (Jessica) was an insanely nice person who spoke very good English and told me a lot about the history and everyday life in China. Another plus point in winter are the winter jackets on offer, which you absolutely need in winter and otherwise drag along unnecessarily when traveling to warm areas. The tour itself was great: I was almost alone on the wall, you have a great view of the wall and the landscape with the beautiful lake next to it. In sneakers, you should also be prepared for many height steps and very steep climbs. I usually travel on my own, but I would definitely recommend a guided tour, given the generally poor English skills of airport staff and taxi drivers and the security offered in terms of return flights. As is the visit to the wall itself, if the opportunity presents itself. Thank you!
