Itinerary
The tour starts with a private walking tour of the historic centre of Wells, the smallest city in England, famous for its mediaeval streets, magnificent Cathedral, picturesque Bishop's Palace and Marketplace. The city, which can be traced back to Roman times, takes its name from the freshwater springs which continue to well up in the gardens of the moated Bishop’s residence.
This magnificent early English Gothic Style Cathedral has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals” and it is famous for its scissor arches, clock, stunning chapter house and stained-glass windows. Tickets will be purchased on arrival.
Adjoining the Cathedral is Vicars’ Close, a charming cluster of houses frozen in time from the 14th century and believed to be the oldest residential street in England.
We cross the atmospheric Marketplace to view the only mediaeval palace in Somerset, which has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years. Walk over the beautiful moat and drawbridge, where you might catch the resident swans ringing a bell for lunch as they have done for generations.
After lunch in a traditional English pub the tour continues on to Glastonbury, a town that is steeped in mystery and legend. This former market town turned New Age hangout is full quirky shops, where alternative is the norm. Visit the Abbey or climb the iconic Tor to savour the panoramic views over the Somerset Levels.
The walking tour starts from the grounds of the impressive ruined Abbey, which is reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur. According to legend this is also where Joseph of Arimathea arrived with the Holy Grail to establish the first English Christian church. Thereafter, enjoy an entertaining stroll through this lovely town centre or climb the Tor. Admission tickets will be purchased on arrival.
This iconic hill dominates the surrounding landscape and has been a spiritual magnet for centuries, for both Pagans and Christians. The views from the summit are breath-taking and the experience is unforgettable. This is where prehistoric history, ancient folklore and Arthurian legends all merge.

What a fantastic day! We learned so much and saw so many interesting sites that we never would have seen on our own. Matthias is a wealth of knowledge. Can't wait to come back to England and do another tour with Galahad Tours!
Words cannot express how Fantastic an experience we had with Matthias & Galahad Tours. We are seasoned travelers & have used private guides & tours on a number of occasions. June 2026 we booked a five day private tour of the Cotswolds in the UK with Matthias. From the start we had a fantastic experience. Matthias is an absolute joy, an outstanding guide, & totally experienced with all the knowledge we needed to make the trip meaningful. This spanned across every imaginable aspect of this UK expereience. He was consistently thoughtful, considerate,& read our interests & priorities extremely well. Plus he was great fun to be with!!. This tripwas an amazing experience, & can’t wait to book our next Galahad experience.
Had a great day with Galahad at Glastonbury and Wells. Guide was fantastic. Very informative and his stories really brought he places to life for us. Highly recommend this tour.
From pickup to drop-off, everything went smoothly. Communication was clear and timing was on point. The jeep ride was fun and safe. Sunrise views were unforgettable. The hot spring was a nice bonus and not rushed at all. Would definitely recommend this if you’re visiting Bali.
Mattias with Galahad Tours gave my husband and I another fantastic tour. This was day 3 of 3 private guided tours from Bath. Matthias took us to Wells and Glastonbury. Both areas were very interesting and beautiful. Our guide made the historical events come to life. It was cool to see where King Arthur and Guinevere were most likely buried. Also, Glastonbury was quite a surprise as being a fun and lively place and completely “new age“. We stopped at ato a nice local place for lunch. It was a fun and interesting day. We truly appreciated our knowledgeable, friendly and professional guy, Matthias. Thank you so much.! I highly recommend his company and services
Matthias was more than we expected! Aware of our interest in Roman History, he didn’t miss a thing! He offered us options along the way and introduced us to so much more than we imagined including local “not usually on standard” tour experiences and helped me find a unique piece of jewelry from the same stone found in Stonehenge! From the uniqueness of Glastonbury to the preserved antiquity of Wells, this is a tour and guide you don’t want to miss! Thank you, Matt, for going above and beyond!
Matt was both informative and entertaining. As for the sights, amazing. I've never been to a place like either Glastonbury or Wells. Quaint, stuffed to the brim with history and lore, and utterly fascinating, both past and present. The best tour I've ever booked.
We first toured with Matthias a few years ago and we wanted to come back to explore more with him on our recent visit. It was like meeting up with an old friend and we really enjoyed exploring Somerset this time - Glastonbury and Cheddar Gorge and Wells. The weather was perfect and the scenery was as beautiful and varied as M told us. We even got to try some original cheddar cheese and visited a local cider farm on the second day. He always chooses somewhere great to eat lunch and really takes his time to answer all our questions. Thank you, J&G
We had the best day with Matt seeing Wells and Glastonbury. We asked him for his recommendations on where to visit near Bath and the day didn’t disappoint. It was beautiful, fascinating and full of surprises. We learned tonnes and had blast. Highly recommended.
Matthias was an excellent guide. He was able to provide a lot of background and history for the sites and the countryside as we drove through.
Matt did a fantastic job. Thoroughly knowledgeable and detailed. Information provided was outstanding. Definitely learned more about English history than before. Would highly recommend Matt to anyone touring SW England.
Galahad tours is exceptional - I cannot say enough. We spend several days with Matthias - he picked us up from the Southampton cruise terminal - we toured Salisbury, the Cotswold's, Highclere Castle, Wells, Glastonbury and returned our group to Heathrow. I'm surprised he wasn't a history major! His knowledge is so expansive - there was never a question he could not answer. Thank you Matt for a wonderful visit.
Had a wonderful time on this private tour with Matthias and cannot recommend this tour enough. I had been to the Cotswolds a few times already so I knew I wanted to see another part of the countryside - and Wells did not disappoint. It was the perfect quintessential small-town, authentic, quaint but majestic city (it is in fact the smallest city in England) and it was amazing to visit on market day. After Wells and a great lunch with Matthias, we ventured to Glastonbury - definitely quite different from Wells. We enjoyed the serenity of the cathedral grounds and ruins but wouldn't say Glastonbury is my vibe per se (cynical NYer here). Either way, it was a fantastic day out seeing both! If you are looking for a private tour guide, book Matthias! He was professional, very conversational and made you feel instantly comfortable in his company - plus a good sense of humor! He definitely helped make my 4th trip to Bath a very memorable one!
Matt is very knowledgeable. Provided an informative, entertaining trip. Knows the history, culture, people well. Well done!
We were a group of 5 ladies taking the sites in Somerset and Bath. Matthias is a perfect guide. He has a wealth of knowledge and took great care of us. As you can see from my photos, it was quite a soggy day but Matthias manage to keep the spirits high. And even sang a beautiful song in front of Glastonbury Abbey thorn tree. Wells cathedral is not to be missed. The architecture is spectacular and we even got to hear the bells ring and watch its famous clock come to life. We were very comfortable in his car and Matthias is a very safe driver. He also had umbrellas for us. He took care of everything. We were all very happy with Matthias and with what we we saw and experienced. I would definitely book his tours again.
We had an amazing day with Matt in Wells and Glastonbury. Matt is very knowledgeable of the history and provided just the right amount of detail for our day. We've learned that while traveling that these private day trips are the way to go, especially when you find a dedicated and awesome guide like Matt!
Matt offers both a knowledgeable introduction to the history of the region and a sociable and personal friend to welcome visitors to the South West of England. The bespoke tour combined an excellent variety of outdoors experience, historical sightseeing and fun and restful food and drink.
Matt was a wonderful, thoughtful host on our day tour of Wells and & Glastonbury. It was a rainy day, but he was prepared with umbrellas! Knowing the rain would slightly impede our day, he added an additional sight, which we greatly appreciated. HIs knowledge of Wells and Glastonbury was impressive and we truly appreciated learning the history. Our lunch was very tasty and he introduced us to Cider, a drink we embraced and drank throughout our stay in England. I would highly recommend Matt - you'll be very happy with his tours.
