Really good tour, definitely worth seeing if you enjoy any form of Frankenstein, and want to know the story behind the creation of the book and more about the author herself. She lived a very fascinating life!

I took some friends to do the house of Frankenstein after dark tour and loved it! This is my 3rd year in a row going, I take different friends each time and they all love it! Very spooky, a fun entertaining evening that everyone enjoyed! Would recommend to get into that Halloween spirit!
Billed as only suitable for 15’s and over and requiring an adult even with my 17 year old we were expecting it to be scary but we were disappointed. The experience was over very quickly - only took us about 20 minutes to cover the floors which made the event quite expensive. The basement and the top floor were particularly disappointing as nothing really happened. It was basically actors jumping out from dark corners but was almost comical rather than scary. Needed to take longer and have more variety in the ‘scares’.
Visited with a friend and our two 12 year old daughters - myself and my daughter are big fans of anything dark and gothic, our friends somewhat less so; however all four of us really enjoyed it! There is a great mix of informative writing, visual displays and some cinema, I was surprised how much our younger daughters enjoyed the silent film screening (they were riveted!) Some of the subject matter is quite dark (as we expected) but the girls took it in stride and enjoyed learning about the life of Mary Shelley and the things that shaped her writing. We opted not to go into the escape rooms or horror basement as one of the girls is very claustrophobic so visited the main house only (I believe this was three or four floors) - the animatronic creature was also a favourite for the girls. All staff were very friendly and professional and we thoroughly enjoyed the visit - would reccomend particularly for fans of Mary, Frankenstein or the gothic, it was a real highlight for me and my 12 year old.
A very interesting look into the life of Mary Shelley and how she created the iconic Frankenstein. The pinball machine is nice addition. I was slightly disappointed that when we went to the basement there were no actors present to provide the scares, but it's very well done. Highly recommended.
Me and a friend wanted to go after reading good reviews so sort of new what to expect .Price could of been a little cheaper for what it was mainly photo opportunities which was fun and did make us laugh and the rest was reading the life story of Mary Shelley. We loved the pinball machine on the top floor. But by far the best was the cellar we must of been heard all the way up the stairs screaming and laughing !
Mary Shelley’s house of Frankenstein, fantastic museum it’s amazing how much you learn about Mary. Would have no trouble recommending a visit to this museum, we came away feeling sad for Mary and the monster.
Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein -WOW! - what an amazing place this is! We had walked by the museum quite a few times over the years, but had never actually visited - what a huge mistake that was! This time we decided to give it a go, and I have to say, we've visited most of the tourist attractions in Bath, from ancient to the new, but the House of Frankenstein is easily the best of ALL Bath attractions! It's got everything, historical interest and factual content, and yes, it IS really interesting, you are quickly captivated by all the exhibits, the unfolding story as you travel through the room, ohh, there is so much to see. So often in museums, things here and there catch your eye, but a lot of skipped past, as you decide which things interest your personal choice....in the House of Frankenstein EVERYTHING is interesting, and it's all presented in so many different ways, from reading all the exciting info, to listening to the sound effects, and multiple interactive feature, fantastic visuals, it's all brilliant! The atmosphere is really good too, you find yourself getting absorbed into the spirit of it, you'll find yourself being shocked (literally -wait and see!), you'll find yourself laughing out loud, and you utter a few screams too! Some of the rooms have wonderful surprises, so I won't be a spoiler, you need to visit yourself! The ticket prices are really good value too, you won't feel ripped off in any way at all....when we left, we were left with that happy buzz you get when you know you've had a really good time. We're going back soon, the next time we're in Bath, it's a must-do experience!
We enjoyed the experience, my nine year old daughter frightened, led the way eas quite interestwd and joined in using the props in the rooms, for clever photo opportunities. The experience led us around 5 or 6 floors of well thought out rooms. Each had its own "feel". The first rooms introduced us to Mary Shelley and her life and as you move through the house the scenes progressively get more macarbe and gothic. We took a few photos and short videos and had lots of fun. The attack where frankenstein's monster is was the peak of the experience. My daughter didnt brave a vistit to the basement. And honestly myself and my sister walked down the stairs and got about a metre in before I screamed in her ear and we abandoned the idea. Im disappointed with myself but I want to return with the rest of the family to complete the basement and maybe try an escape room. Well worth the visit and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Absolutely recommend a visit. We went round quickly and skimmed and skipped most of the reading as the little one led the way and nan was waiting around the corner in a coffee shop. You could take 2 hours and actually enjoy read everything it was eye opening and I had to watch the Robert de Niro film the next day. Summary.. we read some really interesting stories, we enjoyed, we laughed, we clung ro each other in parts. We took some brilliant photos to keep for memories, we got spooked and scared and had a great time.
Whilst visiting Bath for a long weekend with friends we headed over to Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein. Just down from the Royal Crescent and the Circus and virtually next door to the Jane Austin Experience, it is ideally centred in Bath. Not knowing what to expect really, we were pleasantly surprised with the in depth information relating to the Shelly family, Mary Shell herself and her literary journey in writing and publishing Frankenstein, as well as being entwined with Lord Byron and It does a really good job of telling Mary Shelley’s story. Atmospheric and set over numerous floors, some macabre, some less so but including film clips from various films and other memorabilia centred around the Frankenstein myth. The staff were great, but I do have to apologise for laughing at the young lady/Igor in the haunted basement - you did scare my friend though. Oh yeh, go in the haunted basement !
The Museum provides an immersive and complete vision of Mary Shelley life, including insights regarding society of the times and how Frankestein was created. Staff is super-friendly and all rooms (including shop) are filled with accurate and fancy details and decorations. We booked also "The shallows" escape experience: very well done, definitely worth the price. A must do when in Bath!
Amazing escape room and very interesting museum. Would definately recommend!
The theatrical tour part was informative and fun, but not theatrical except for a very brief appearance by Shelley, I think. The house itself, though, was, according to my husband, "The most disappointing tourist trap in Bath." He went through it in about ten minutes. It would be okay if the admission price weren't so high relative to what you get. We didn't do the escape rooms or the haunted basement part, though.
Was fantastic for fans ,my daughters been wanting to go for over a year . Very lovely staff and interesting ,would recommend x
Great experience in the centre of Bath, well worth the money! Spent around 45 / 60 minutes in here exploring the 5 levels this museum has to offer, both very informative and detailed rooms, with some frights along the way! Basement was very fun to wrap up with, lots of attention to detail and felt very immersed in the life of Mary Shelley and the creation of Frankenstein from start to finish!
We had a great time. The museum is fab, the basement made our girls scream and the adults laugh (and scream) and was so much fun, thanks to the scary member of staff. The staff were amazing (all of them), we played the suitcase game, which was difficult but do-able in the end. The museum is worth a visit alone, with its displays, pinball & everything! Great value, go visit!
Corky little museum. They did a good job depicting the life and story of Mary Shelly and her monster Frankenstein.
This museum was a great experience. A lot of care had been taken to decorate and theme the place, and learning about Shelley and the legacy of Frankstein was genuinely interesting. It was not too busy and I would say an hour is a good amount of time to enjoy the tour. We also booked an escape room while here which I would definitely recommend, I have done a few and this was excellent! The staff were very friendly and welcoming and contributed to the ambience and activities excellently - they definitely elevated the experience. Thank you for a great time - well worth the admission fee.
Fantastic. A lovely museum that is small enough for it to not be overwhelming but big enough for it to be well worth your money and have a lot of interesting content. The people where also lovely, my party had a mess up with the payer's card and they where very helpful and kind. clearly made with passion, not too expensive. brilliant.
Feeling Gothic? Got a taste for the weird and wonderful? Like early Science Fiction or early Horror? Or just interested in literary history or the story of Bath? This is the place for you. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein has been described as precocious as she wrote her famous masterpiece here in the city of Bath aged only 18. I think she was also ome of those people like Roger Bacon, Leonardo da Vinci and HG Wells simply born ahead of their time. She wrote many other works than Frankenstein, sadly the others little read now Here in the House of Frankenstein you can examine the background to her work, her life, her upbringing, her rather notorious circle of friends and acquaintances and the strange (to us, now) milieu of speculation and experimentation that makes up the backbone of that great gothic novel. Through videos, exhibits and immersive experience, see the Genesis of Frankenstein.
This was great. Very imaginative & creative way of commemorating Mary Shelley’s actual writing of Frankenstein whilst staying in Bath, but so much more. A deep dive into the world & gothic horror of it all in a wonderful old house environment
We found this interesting if you’re a fan of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley. Informative but also great film memorabilia and themed artefacts. Best bit though is at the end in the basement…
We had a blast! We did the Victor's Lair escape room, and then explored the entire house (including the scary basement). The escape was innovative and had great visuals, lots of fun. The history of the building really added to the atmosphere and the staff were very helpful.
Spur of the moment visit. Lovely little museum independently run. We didn't do Escape Room, so we may return to do that at some point. Definitely worth a visit, small but informative.
I am a fan of Frankenstein and never thought I would run into a connection with Mary Shelley in the town of Bath. She did live here and the town of Bath was in the period she wrote this book. Very interesting facts of Mary’s life as you climb the stairs. In the top room you see a recreation of Frankenstein’s Monster as Shelley describes him. Very interesting and quirky displays keep the tour interesting but the greatest treasure is a pretty complete description of Mary herself.
Brilliantly informative and fun from start to finish. And the basement was terrifying. We spotted what looked like a live actor walking towards us and legged it screaming 😂 . Highly recommend!
The fact that this is called a multisensory museum built up my expectations and I have to admit I was left slightly deflated by the overall experience. The museum was certainly very informative and I learnt a lot about Mary Shelley's life which I did not know before and you do become immersed in her world and how Frankenstein 'came to life'. The themed rooms are slightly spooky and atmospheric and the gory specimens in jars, memorabilia and vintage movie posters will clearly please horror fans. The highlight of the museum is probably the 8 foot animatronic creature which although fairly impressive & based on Mary Shelleys own description of the monster I was again slightly disappointed by and only really noticed his chest moving (to replicate breathing) whilst I was there. The biggest disappointment by far was the basement which was basically just a lot of small dark alcoves and not scary in the least. I heard someone scream but I am not sure why! Again, this is supposed to be multisensory experience with audio and visual effects so maybe I just went in at the wrong time because I didn't notice anything like that. Overall, I was glad I visited the House of Frankenstein although personally I was more interested in Mary Shelley herself than the famous monster she created so perhaps I would have been better off just reading her biography. This is an award winning museum which I expect will appeal more to children/teenagers who I have no doubt will find it far more scary and exciting than I did.
Brilliant tour . Our tour guide was brilliant. Sorry never got your name. Met us at the meeting point and did a 1 hour walking tour. Going through the story of Mary shelley and her family. Walking to different points of interest on our way. Ending up at the museum of frankinstin. Brilliant. I do recommend taking a drink. Especially as it was so hot yesterday. Highly recommend.
Amazing and creapy atmosphere. The items on display is well made and mantaid. The celler is a verry intense, and an impesive experiense.
Something fun and quirky to do whist on a vist to bath. Learnt a little bit about the famous frankenstein. The basement attraction was quite jumpy. Worth a visit if you're into horror
I have always loved Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus so when I happened to see this museum coincidentally while in Bath, I had to jump right in! If you are a "purist" like me, the ghoul-ishness and the old-school "monster" angles might make you wince, but stick with it because it truly is a museum about Mary Shelley - and what a life she had! The museum is set up perfectly to bring you throughout Mary's life and her tumultuous relationships with her step-sister Claire, her lover/husband Percy, and Lord Byron. Each piece of writing was engaging and really told the story like you were reading a book. You really felt immersed in the gothic world of Mary Shelley. They still do have a lot of material dedicated to the pop culture "monster" angle, so if you are into that then you would love it too. Highly, highly recommend!!
We started the tour down in the basement , which was basically a load of smelly bandages hanging in a dark room, we thought maybe someone was going to jump out on us but no just walked around in a circle in the dark batting the smelly bits if material out of our faces, was there supposed to be someone down there? the other floors are quite Interesting but I wouldn't go as far as multi sensory , a copper pole to touch, a pinball machine and a wall you touch which gives you a shock that was it. Really not worth the money, the staff you could tell really didn't want to be there , we booked an escape room too it was a good escape room but 1, there are a few spelling mistakes on the instructions 2. One of the clues uses the word "retrospectively" which is very misleading as it is the wrong word to describe the task we spent way too long on this 3. As soon as we finished , they took our pic handed us our bags and were just quickly ushered out the door You can tell staff just wanted to get home. I also had a private number call me in the morning, from house of MK it supposed to be a courtesy call but the lady was quite abrupt, Maybe they were all having a bad day. The museum.is Interesting , but we were made to feel quite unwelcome, I wouldn't pay for the museum separately
it is nice and the museum is fine however it is expensive and not good value for money. the escape room is poorly designed as well as the museum
Lots of interesting and well presented things to see in the museum and you can enjoy a quick game of pinball before heading upstairs to the escape room. The escape room itself is very well constructed, great theming and everything high quality. Very challenging, atmospheric and with a few frights. Good mix of puzzles with some gory props.
We visited recently while spending a day in Bath. Not for us the stately Roman baths or indeed Bath Abbey. We wanted thrills and fear so opted for the Frankenstein museum. While I thought it a little pricey at £27 per person to visit both the museum and small escape room my teenage grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed it all. There is lots to see and read about including some gory "specimens " in dusty glass jars. The theatre room showing the original 1910 movie was snug and the film was hilarious in it's over dramatic "ham" acting, although was probably terrifying in it's day! We spent a good couple of hours in there although I personally didn't hang around for long in the room with an 8ft recreation of the original monster. It's moving eyes and heaving chest were terrifying! 😳 If you love all things Frankenstein and morbid you will love this place. We certainly did!
just the right level of challenging - like any good escape room should be - though with the attentive, requisite assistance (clue) should it be required! Very friendly, a fun activity while exploring Bath.
We bought our tickets beforehand in case it was a busy time but we were able to go straight in. We were in there for a good couple of hours as there was so much to read and digest. It was a moving experience and I had no idea how much Mary had experienced in her life. Very Gothic indeed. The house was thoughtfully curated and finished off by a little sit down in the attic cinema to watch a film. Staff suitably attired and informative. Treated myself to pens in the shop (card only). Toilets were thankfully really clean and warm! In my opinion well worth a visit.
Me & my wife visited the House of Frankenstein Museum yesterday and had a great time. We spent a couple of hours there and read almost all of the information panels. This is rare for us but the panels were well written, concise and informative. There were lots of interesting exhibits and the full size Frankenstein animatronic was very impressive. The ticket price was reasonable and the creepy atmosphere was perfectly pitched. The staff were also very good, especially the lady who scared the life out of us in the basement. Highly recommended all round.
Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein has an interesting concept, but it doesn’t really function as a museum. There isn’t much to actually look at in terms of exhibits or artefacts. Most of the experience involves walking through themed rooms and reading information about Mary Shelley’s life and the creation of Frankenstein. It feels more like a self‑guided walkthrough than a museum with things to explore. There is an escape room and an interactive “jump scare” cellar experience, but I didn’t do either as I’m claustrophobic. Without those add‑ons, the main attraction is very short. I spent less than an hour inside, and that was taking my time. Some of the rooms are atmospheric and nicely themed, but the overall layout can feel a bit cramped and slightly confusing. It would benefit from clearer direction and more substance to make the visit feel more complete. Overall, it’s an unusual attraction with a creative idea behind it, but it needs more depth and more to actually see. As it stands, it feels limited for the price and is a very quick visit unless you book the extra experiences.
The museum is really interesting and presents details of Mary Shelley and her famous ‘Frankenstein’ in a fun way. The escape game way challenging and a good way to spend time together.
Great experience the basement was far to scary for me though!! I didn’t know a lot about Mary Shelley but whatever life she had.
Myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed this museum! We didn't expect it to offer to much and to be so immersive. There was lots of information to consume and we also enjoyed the QR-code game as we explored. I definitely would recommend visiting as a fun day activity.
Had so much fun here as a massive fan of Mary Shelley’s books. Reading all the information on the walls in the museum was a bit of a tight squeeze as we visited at peak times but the experience was still fantastic :) I didn’t actually expect to get scared in the basement but I did lol! Definitely try it out if you want a good laugh (after getting jumpscared and screaming by running into someone in the basement)
We did the escape room upstairs and then looked around the museum. It was a Christmas present for my parents and we had a wonderful time. The staff were fab and we really enjoyed the escape room. We brought our 7 month old son with us so we decided not to do the basement one as apparently it is a bit scarier but would like to do it one day!
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here with my grandson. Well thought out and informative as well as a little bit scary. Very well worth a visit to the museum & then one of the escape rooms. We very nearly made it out !!
A comprehensive look at Mary Shelley and her accomplished yet tragedy-stricken life. Includes info on her complicated and controversial friends and family, many of whom were famous (or infamous) themselves. We were there longer than the average time because every room offered another approach to Shelley's life and, later on, explorations of the international impact of her story of the Creature and its Creator: movie posters, film clips, a room of Creature-related toys and games, and more. The people behind the museum have a great vision!
For £17.50pp it is expensive for what you get. Basically some ramshackled, damp ricketry rooms over several levels with signage outlining Mary Shelley's life story. The displays were weird with some having no relevance to the story other than trying to create a creepy atmosphere eg. shrunken monkey head. For 3 of us it cost $107 AUD so was an absolute rip off to be honest. No an experience for senior citizens or those with disabilities (narrow multi level stairs).
We visited this little museum in February so it was nice and quiet. There was plenty of time to read all the information about Mary Shelley‘s life. You don’t need to know anything about her before hand to enjoy this visit The staff were friendly and lovely and chatty. The basement wasn’t so bad after all 😊 They did offer blue light discount, which is always a bonus We would recommend this as something to do whilst you visit Bath.
Me and my gf were in bath and didn't realise it had a connection to frankenstien but when we drove past it and saw it we had to try it. We wasn't sure what to expect when we went in it was about £35 for 2 of us and it was really good there lots of reading but they really go into the history of Mary shelly and her family and how she got the inspiration and its full of cool pictures and a room full of different frankenstien merchandise and a little movie room to watch the old movie and then they tell you to do the basement last which I wont spoil but is really good and worth a go if your brave enough.
Wow what an immersive experience. I knew little of Mary Shelley’s life and the origins of Frankenstein before going and I have a new found appreciation of both the author and story now. I loved the details of how the origins of the story have become the modern day representation we now see. An incredibly immersive and thorough experience, spanning 6-7 floors! The slightly eerie decor added to the immersion, with a bonus scene in the basement! The staff were lovely, the experience was reasonably priced, and the final room on the top floor - wow! Very glad we visited!
