Itinerary
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel or apartment in Barcelona. The day before the tour, you will receive a message with your exact pick-up time and your guide’s name and phone number.
The Rocky Massif of Montserrat was declared a Natural Park in 1987 and is known for the rounded shape of its peaks. This incredible 4,000-foot wonder is easily recognisable by its “serrated” top, from which it got its name. Once you reach the monastery, you have plenty of options, and your guide will always adjust to your interests. We invite you to take an easy walk of around 30 minutes to enjoy one of the most astonishing views of the natural park, but if you wish, you can also choose other activities the mountain offers.
Montserrat Basilica, located in the stunning Montserrat mountain range in Catalonia, is a revered site of pilgrimage and natural beauty. Known for housing the famous statue of the Black Madonna, La Moreneta, the basilica is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark. Its breathtaking setting amid rocky cliffs offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular destination for both worshippers and tourists. Visitors can explore the basilica’s rich history, beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere, while experiencing the spiritual energy that has drawn people here since the 12th century.
Decide with your small group of up to 8 people if you want to ride the Sant Joan funicular, which takes you up above the monastery for wide views over the mountain.
If you wish, you can also visit the Montserrat Museum. It has an important collection of early paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries, with works by El Greco and Caravaggio, as well as a large collection of Catalan paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, with major names such as Fortuny, Rusiñol, Casas, Picasso and Dalí, and French Impressionists such as Monet, Degas and Sisley.

Monserrat is a beautiful place and our guide Alex was amazing. He explained the history of the monastery, was very communicative and helpful, and made the tour a seamless and relaxing experience. The length of the visit was perfect and the crowd size was not too big. The views were amazing and I learned so much about Catalan culture from Alex. I highly recommend this experience!!
The guide was extremely knowledgable about Montserrat and the history of the Monastery. He also gave us a lot of freedom to explore!
Alex was fantastic. Gave us a great history and wonderful options for our free time. It was just the right amount of time to spend time in the monastery and take the funicular and hike down past the cross. Would highly recommend this tour and our guide Alex! Thank you!
Alejandro was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and accommodating to what we were interested in. Montserrat was beautiful and a can't miss if you have time!
Alejandro was very good! He customized our tour how we liked and accommodated our needs.
It was a special and very lovely experience. Alex was our guide, and the whole morning was great; he explained the history of the monastery and the mountain to us.
Very impressed with this excursion. Alex, our guide messaged me on WhatsApp in advance to let us know when he’d be at our hotel and he was on time and ready to go. He answered all our questions as we picked up the other 2 couples and we headed out for the trip to Monserrat. Alex was super knowledgeable about the area and gave us the option to ride the gondola up which was worth it. We had the perfect amount of free time. Highly recommend this tour!
Excellent tour with Alex! Very knowledgeable and had a great time!
Alejandro was a wonderful guide! Very knowledgeable and friendly. Our trip only had 7 guests so that was a great size. This trip was incredible. The views, the environment, everything was breathtaking. Such a nice change from the city life experience in Barcelona. Loved getting to learn about the monastery, walk the grounds and see the spectacular views. The Black Madonna was beautiful and special to be able to visit. And to learn more about the Catalan culture. Highly recommend!
Great small group tour that catered to our needs, vey knowledgeable guide who was very flexible and changed tour round to suit weather conditions
Excellent guide Xavier explained all the intricacies of the story of the Black Madonna of Monserrat .
We had a wonderful guide in Alejandro. He was very prompt (showed up 5 minutes early), quite affable, and had a very contagious passion and enthusiasm for Montserrat. En route, he shared a lot of his personal experiences as a Catalan tour guide, which we found very educational. Once at Montserrat, he showed us interesting facts and tips including the best places to take pictures from.
It was fantastic to take a brake from busy Barcelona and our guide Alejandro was so knowledgeable about everything It was perfect 👌🏼
Javi was informative, engaging, funny and entertaining and got the group to know each other and have a good time together as well as afford each to make a choice at the top of Monserrat to hike, take cograil higher, go to the museum, shop or just enjoy being there! Thank you Javi for the fun experience. Janet and Gary Clarke
Javi was a wonderful guide, very knowledgeable and polite. Highly recommended.
Javier made the tour upbeat, fun, and very pleasant. He was very knowledgeable of all the sites and allowed for free time in the monastery. Could not recommend this tour more.
This is a unique opportunity to observe and understand the origins of a historical statue and the community that was charged to care for it.
Javi was an excellent guide. On time and very knowledgeable. He made us laugh. Very welcoming and personable. Javi was able to get us Madonna tickets which was almost sold out. Would highly recommend this tour.
The tour guide driver never showed up. Texted quite a few times leading us to believe he was on his way. But then texted and said there’s too much traffic. He tried to say that someone showed up and took the wrong people. That was a joke. We sat outside for two hours, waiting for him. Very disappointed very unprofessional.
Excellent tour! It was a great trip into Montserrat. There were a few additional expenses (the parking was so full that we parked in a lot and then all passengers had to take the train. It was cool and a great way to travel but it was an unexpected expense) as the time I went there, there was a holiday going on. Which meant, way more people coming to Montserrat! Overall, I enjoyed everything about his tour!
Alex was an amazing guide. He was great telling us the history and what activities we could do. The views were amazing.
I highly recommend this tour and Javi as a tour guide! From the moment the tour began, his enthusiasm and passion for the area were completely contagious. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge and shared fascinating stories that really brought the history and culture of the places we visited to life. Javi went out of his way to make sure everyone in the group felt included and engaged, tailoring the experience to our interests. His warm personality and great sense of humor made the entire day incredibly fun and memorable.
This is a must do tour! And if you happen to get Ravi as your guide - even better!!! There were 7 total on our tour and Ravi made sure we were all introduced and no one was left out of conversations. He was great at summarizing how things would work - where the bathrooms were, when to make sure you utilized them, get a coffee, snack, etc. He was a wealth of knowledge along the way and clearly has pride in his country and culture. Once we were at Montserrat he gave us several choices and planned the day so we would get the most of our experience. He is so knowledgeable and even stayed at Montserrat for 3 days himself as a mink experience so really had inside information to share. He was a 10 out of 10!!!!
The Monastery was excellent and guide was very knowledgeable. There was some issues with the pickup from the hotel, but it was sorted out - make sure you can reply to SMS (which I had not planned for as I'm on esim, so that's on me) but I wasn't expecting to be asked to walk so far from my hotel when I specifically booked "hotel pickup included"
Our guide Eduardo was very knowledgeable of Montserrat history and the uniqueness of the site. The mountain-side landscape view is breathtaking as well as unique. The religious history was interesting. The art museum is not to be missed. With so many Masters of Art on display, it was worth the small admission price.
Absolutely amazing experience from beginning to end! We felt comfortable, welcomed, and at ease throughout the entire tour. Luis was an outstanding driver, making the ride smooth, safe, and enjoyable. Alba was hands down the best tour guide we could have asked for! She was incredibly knowledgeable and informative, knew so much about everything we visited, and explained everything in a way that kept us interested throughout the entire experience. Both Luis and Alba went above and beyond to make this tour special. Their professionalism, friendliness, and knowledge made the experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a better team. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Barcelona!
Great tour, picked up on time and got us to the tourist site before crowds arrived. Knowledgeable. Thanks, Anatoli!
Excellent driver with great personality. Very knowledgeable about the sights.
Javi was the best tour guide EVER! He was extremely informative and entertaining as well. This tour was so well worth it. Highly recommend it!
It was an excellent tour of Montserrat with an exceptional guide named Vincent. He was very knowledgeable and pleasant and kept a reasonable pace touring the site.
Matt was over the top terrific as a guide. He was organized, knowledgeable, and kind . He seamlessly answered all questions and was very thorough with his information. We greatly appreciated his sense of organization and communication even prior to the tour as he sent reminders and updated times for meeting. 6 stars for him. Montserrat is a very interesting monastery and the surroundings are beautiful.
Matt was a thoroughly knowledgeable tour guide sharing his knowledge with lots of fun!
Javi was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
Matt was a great host! We loved this tour.
Javier was a very knowledgeable guide. As a group of 7 we were blessed that Javy shared the history of Montserrat with us. He was a fantastic guide and we had a wonderful time.
Javier was an excellent guide! Can’t say enough good things about the tour - he’s so knowledgeable and friendly!!
Brilliant thanks. Very knowledgeable and interesting.
Great experience. Alejandro was excellent 👍
Pick up time was 8:00 am. I called twice to see if he was coming and the response was "in 10 minutes". Well, I was finally picked up at 9:30 am. The car was jammed packed, as I sat with him and a 300 lb person in the front seat. Monserrat was a great place, but Javi spent no more than 15 minutes with us before saying we had time for either the Cogwheel train or museum, but not both. We got there in time to go to the Basilica, but we arrived so late we were ushered out when mass began shortly thereafter. Never again with this company!
The tour guide, Gaspar was wonderful, shared his knowledge and overall I was extremely pleased!
Pick up was great. We did not have to negotiate getting there. Alex was our driver and guide. He explained some the history of the location in the courtyard, did an orientation to possible activities, and then we were on our own. I kind of expected our guide to stick with us or 2/3 of the tour and then cut us loose. I guess I did not read the fine print of the explanation of the tour. 1/2 day is not enough to see things there. We took a vote to see if we would ride the funicular to the monastery. So if you're the only one that wants to ride it, you may be out of luck. I expected the Funicular to be part of the fee, but it wasn't. The monastery has multiple attractions. The church with the black madonna, fee is also required to walk up to the madonna. There is a museum (another fee). There is another funicular to a higher location and then also a hike to a cross with an overlook (also another fee). So , in a 1/2 day, you have to choose what you want to experience. We only had time for the church and listened to mass. We got picked up at 830 and was headed back at 1205, so maybe 2 1/2 to 3 hours actually at the Monestary grounds. This is a great way to experience the place hassle free and if you're short on time.
Marcel was an absolutely wonderful guide! Extremely informed about Barcelona and very well-versed in Montserrat history. It was especially nice having a local for our guide!
Alejandro was a great guide. Very punctual, answered all our questions, very flexible, lots of facts and history.
Montserrat and the Basílica will be impressive regardless of how you visit, but our journey was much more special as a result of this small-group tour. Our tour guide, Alba, was delightful and our driver, Luis, was safe and efficient. We received a text via WhatsApp from Alba the evening before our tour to confirm our details and they arrived at our hotel promptly as scheduled. Alba regaled us with stories and histories of Barcelona and Catalan on our drive which provided a great context for our visit. Because we left early and didn’t have to park, we saved a significant amount of time waiting in line and Luis delivered us as close to entry as possible. While there, Alba disclosed the significance and legends of Montserrat and helped us maximize the free time we had around this historic site. One of our traveling companions had some mobility limitations and Alba did a great job of pacing our tour so she could rest and keep up without making us feel like we were missing anything. On our drive back to Barcelona, Alba provided some additional details and recommendations for the rest of our time in the city and Luis dropped us right at the door of our hotel. We very highly recommend this tour - you cannot go wrong!
We give Matt 5 ⭐️ plus. He made us feel safe and comfortable.
Our tour guide - Anatoli from InOut Tours - was superb. He was knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and had a great sense of humor.
Javi was the best!!! He was fun, personable, professional and educational. He is a wealth of knowledge. This is a must do tour. Do not miss it!!!!
Guide Edwardo waa very informative. It was a life changing experience. The weathwr was great and our tour size was only 5 people
We greatly enjoyed our tour. The hotel pickup is a wonderful bonus and our guide, Eduardo, was very knowledgeable and personable! Highly recommended! Especially going first thing in the morning, otherwise the wait for admittance to the top would have been excruciatingly long.
