What a wonderful experience! We were welcomed warmly into the instructor's family compound on a beautiful sunny morning. The class took place in an immaculate outdoor kitchen where everything was prepared and ready to go. What fun we had learning all about traditional Balinese food and how to prepare it, being allowed to fully participate in most of the steps. Cleanliness and safety were top priority in this kitchen. We sat down to a lovely meal to eat all that we had helped to prepare. This class was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Bali.

We had the most amazing time at this cooking class. I couldn’t stop grinning the whole time. Ayu and Irene were so lovely, it was so nice learning about Indonesian/Balinese culture from them. The food tasted incredible and it was really fun to make. We can’t wait to return to the UK and try to make tempeh ourselves, hopefully it’ll work in our cold weather! Definitely a highlight of our whole trip :)
The class is so much fun and informative. Ibu Ayu is very friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about Balinese culture. And the most important thing, the foods are yummy and best part she will give you the recipe to bring home. Great experience and definitely worth your time.
Ayu and her family were amazing hosts and we had a terrific time. We learned about authentic Balinese food and traditions. There language skills were flawless. The food itself was really good. A wonderful way to spend the morning and lunch time. Highly recommended!!!
Would highly recommend this! Was honestly one of the best experiences we’ve had in Bali and by far the most delicious food we’ve ate during our stay. Ayu is simply an exceptional host. Each one of us were completely thrilled by her impeccable teaching skills and her extensive knowledge on cooking. With such a kind heart she made us feel right at home. On top of that it’s definitely not an easy task taking on a group of 10 people in one session haha! Can’t express enough gratitude for Ayu and her wonderful family. If I had the chance I would definitely come back again!
The perfect experience! The whole family was incredibly welcoming, and their homestay was gorgeous. The whole process was very streamlined, and Ayu taught us so much about each individual ingredient as we walked through each recipe. Ngurah also went out of his way to go to a local market to purchase some tempeh starter for us because we expressed an interest in making tempeh ourselves at home. I cannot stop telling my friends about this experience, and I really encourage anyone visiting Bali to pay them a visit.
Ayu is such a wonderful host. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about cooking. We made several tempeh based dishes and talked about the history of tempeh as we went. It was fascinating to see how tempeh is made and learn all the different ways I could cook it. Ayu also caters to non-vegans so this class is great for all dietary requirements. The end product was delicious and well presented. I left very full and can't wait to try some of the recipes at home. Ayu also does online cooking classes which I can't wait to join! Thanks for the great experience and conversation Ayu.
Easily one of the best activities to do in Bali. It's so much more than just a cooking class. I learned so much about the Balinese history and culture through this activity. Cannot thank Ayu and Ngurah enough for the experience! The food... was Devine! Learning how to make them made me appreciate it so much more.
I love everything! I felt like I was at home with beloved people who shared they priceless experience in the most excellent manner. Well organised from a cup of tea and to recipes and your own pack of yeast. The greatest values for me are communications and emotions, thanks, Ayu and Ngurah, you definitely left warm mark in my heart and mind!
This is an experience that is worth going for :-) Ayu and Ngurah were genuine, hospitable and knowledgeable, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with them. The cooking class was unlike any other, as they were thorough in teaching us the steps and even provided us with a guide on how to make tempeh ourselves at home! Highly recommend
Everything about this experience was amazing. Ayu, Ngurah and their family were incredibly welcoming and kind. I can’t vouch for them enough. There are many cooking classes to choose from in Bali (vegetarian and not), I’m vegan and love to cook so I was looking for a vegan-friendly traditional Balinese class. And was I glad to find Ayu's class! To my surprise, many Balinese and Indonesian dishes are very easy to make vegan or are already vegan. Ayu had no problem accommodating my dietary needs and even went above and beyond in making sure everything served that day was vegan. We even left with a personalized recipe book that I cannot wait to put to good use. What made this class so special and unique amongst all others was not only Ayu’s incredible cooking experience but the level of personalization provided and the inclusion of the Tempe making tour. Did you know Tempe is Indonesian? Ngurah will take on a tour to learn how local families make Tempe and sell it to local shops. I left not only with a full belly but a heart full of joy. I loved learning so much about Indonesian and Balinese cuisine as well their culture. We exchanged stories, compared cuisines and ate delicious food. I would take this class again in a heart beat.
Finally a cooking course which uses traditional Balinese recipes, is taught along with the nutritional benefits being explained to us, is practical and hands-on, and most enjoyable was eating our creations at the end (it was a taste sensation). Thankyou Ayu because now I know how tempe is made from scratch!
That was the best activity I‘ve ever done! They are so warm-hearted, which they spread out like sunshine 🌞 I immediately felt connected with them and learned a lot! Not only about the food (which was more than delicious btw!), the Tempe-making-process which is very rare to get an insight in, but also about architecture and about Balinese culture and politics. You even get your own recipes in a selfmade book! All in all a wonderful family and a day with them is worth it!
This was a great introduction to the world of Tempeh - including a visit to a tempeh-making facility nearby, and a fun and involving cooking session, making several delicious dishes incorporating this ingredient...all to be eaten afterwards [so make sure you've got space!]
Fantastic experience with knowledgeable people in a Balinese home! Nice to visit a family run tempeh factory and hear about the production for 30mins or so. Followed by approx 3h of learning, cooking and eating delicious vegan Balinese dishes. We had one teacher and 2 assistants, and our group consisted of 4 adults and one baby. Private event. It was a hot day so it got a bit too hot for us, but there were some tasty local refreshments along the way which helped a bit. We left with a full tummy, a receipt book and new Balinese experience. Can highly recommend, such lovely and flexible people. Thanks!
A must do if you are in Bali, Ayu and Ngurah are amazing people and will guide you expertly through Balinese cuisine. Plus you will have the opportunity to taste everything and at the end there will be a lunch together with the prepared dishes We loved it!
It is located in a quiet residential area. We learned how to make tempeh and how to make local dishes using tempeh and fresh ingredients. The English explanations are very easy to understand, and the instructor, Ayu, answers all our questions carefully. They also cater to vegans. We were given detailed recipes. The staff were all friendly, and it was a really great experience for all participants. We can take home a kit to make tempeh. The follow-up service for fermenting tempeh was also very helpful. We were able to make tempeh safely. I would like to participate again if I have the opportunity.
