Legong Kraton is a refined classical dance that presents a highly stylized royal drama performed by three dancers: a court attendant and two identically dressed legongs portraying noble characters. Accompanied by the expressive rhythms of a gamelan orchestra, the performance relies on graceful movements and musical nuance to suggest changes of scene and emotion. The story, rooted in 12th–13th century East Javanese history, tells of King Lasem, who finds the maiden Rangkesari lost in the forest and imprisons her in his palace. Her brother, the Prince of Daha, threatens war unless she is freed. Rangkesari pleads for peace, but the king chooses battle. On his way to the battlefield, he encounters a bird that foretells his death. Ignoring the omen, he proceeds to fight and is ultimately killed, a fate foreshadowed in his poignant farewell before war.

I have a background in dance, so I was so excited to go to this, its actually one of reasons we went to Ubud. It was everything I hoped it would be. The performers were fabulous and the costumes were stunning. The story was so beautifully performed to wonderful traditional music. The musicians were highly skilled. We arrived 40mins prior & all the seats were taken & hardly any space on ground at front, but I managed to get a spot, but its just an old carpet on the ground, so very hard. Take a cushion to sit on if you want to sit down the front.
Great way to spend an evening. The dancers were amazing, very expressive and so mesmerising. Highly recommend to anyone interested in theatre and dance!
An interesting and inexpensive 1 1/2 hours with several stories represented by dance. We arrived 35mins before the start, and had OK seats, with a side view. Those arriving later had poor seating, and later still Standing Room Only. Some seating areas are covered, others open.
Amazing dancing! Such a fun experience right in the heart of Ubud. Make sure to get there an hour/45 minutes early if you want a good seat.
Great show. But need to get there early to get seats…. And it’s not terribly comfortable…maybe bring a soft jacket to sit on? Also, not sure what they do when it’s raining…. It’s all outside.
Loved the show…. Truly entertaining and professional. But the seating is pretty uncomfortable for an older person.
Amazing show in a great location. Great price and excellent service at the venue. Great view of the show.
First legong dance show for me. My impression was that the troupe performed very well and also the gamelan orchestra. Overall a very good experience.
The palace is located in the heart of Ubud, so it’s easy to get to if you’re staying in/near the center. We arrived about one hour early since we weren’t exactly sure where we needed to go and they were already allowing folks in to choose their seat. It gets pretty full so if you want a seat, with a back then try to get to the venue at least 45 minutes early. The show was very enjoyable and the performers were all very good. The band played traditional Balinese music and the dancers were very colorful and well choreographed. The tickets don’t cost mush and I think it was a great value.
We arrived about 45 minutes early, had seats in the 5th row. Good view, could see whole stage, about 5 rows open still behind us. Can buy cold beverages (soda and beer) from a few vendors. Bathrooms easily accessable. Place was full by showtime on a Monday. The music is trance-like, and the perfromers all very good. Worth a watch, some left before the end, and they didn't miss much. Show was about 75 minutes. Recommend reading the pamphlet while waiting as it explains the dances. Note that airflow is poor and it was very hot, bring a fan.
Authentic experience of Balinese culture at an outstandingly beautiful venue. Arrive early if you want a front seat as it gets busy!
An absolutely mesmerizing performance and certainly well worth seeing for the price we paid. The performance was an hour and a half in length. We had front row seats but went an hour early to secure them as preferential seating was not guaranteed. The dancing was fascinating to watch, and the performance gave us an insight into the Balinese dance culture. The costumes and face makeup were stunning. The music was almost trance-like. Perhaps the biggest fascination for me was watching the dancers move their fingers, toes, head and eyes in directions that seemed impossible. The programme was directly translated into English from Balinese, but we made sense of the story line to a degree. I'd highly recommended seeing this show.
Show was terrific! Great value for $! The seating is very uncomfortable. Get there early to get a front row chair rather than sit on a rack lol
Read the dance guide you get on entry, it helps to understand the dances and get there a 30mins early for a better seat.
Awesome show! Went as a solo traveler. Arrive 45-60 min head of time to get a front row seat; read the pamphlet so you can follow the story! The women were captivating and the gamelan music (not sure if it is played every day) puts you in a beautiful trance. Every day is a different show I believe. Your contribution supports the arts!! The dance group has been around since the 80s
Great show! We really enjoyed everything - costumes, dancers, musicians are amazing! Highly recommend to see this!
Supremely beautiful!! An experience you should not miss. Up there with the great things in life, like the Louvre etc! It’s classical. Each dancer has dedicated his or her life to this art. How many hours of hard work from childhood onwards!!
It is very Nice to see. But you have to go about 1 hour before to have a good place to sit. The costumes are very beautyfull, but you have to like the music.
Cultural dance that is well worth seeing. Reasonable entry price. The dancing goes on for 1.5 hours which is 30mins too long if you have small children they will get bored.
Stunning display of great Balinese dancing and beautiful Ubud palace setting. Come early as it fills up quickly. We took the opportunity to be there an hour early and had almost front row seats, opportunity to buy soft drinks or beer on location.
The Legong Trance and Paradise Dance at Ubud Palace was a wonderful experience to watch. We went there on our first day in Ubud and the performance left a good impression on us about the cultural heritage of Bali. However, it could be made better with less tickets being sold since the sitting space is very limited and they get people to sit nearly anywhere possible. And the other thing which we missed was any background narration to help understand the acts better.
I LOVED IT! So so so beautiful and hypnotizing, Highly recommend it. It's one hour of pure enjoyment. I went on my birthday so it was even more memorable
This was a beautiful performance that was illustrative of the culture. It’s a great way to see the unique subtle qualities of their dance. The costumes were so lovely and the music powerful. The only down side is the seating is remarkably uncomfortable. Because you have to get there early to get a good seat, I suggest grabbing the seat but don’t just sit. We walked through the U of palace afterwards so it was a two for one experience. Definitely worth the price.
The journey to the Legong Trance and Paradise Dance performance at Ubud Palace begins in early evening chaos - navigating through Ubud's crowded streets with persistent ticket sellers (just buy at the entrance, easier). While the venue's seating isn't particularly comfortable, arriving 15 minutes early secured us decent mid-way seats. Once the performance began, all external distractions faded away. The live musicians created a mesmerizing backdrop for the dancers, whose technical skill and grace were absolutely captivating. The Thursday program offered a wonderful sampling of different traditional dances: Legong Trance, Jauk, Lencana Agung Ubud, Kebyar Trompong, and the Ballet of Bimaniu. The elaborate costumes and artistic execution were truly impressive - beautiful and enchanting in every detail. Despite the somewhat chaotic beginning in bustling Ubud, the show itself was fantastic and well worth experiencing. We left very satisfied and would gladly attend again.
Get there early for a good seat, lasts for 1 hour 30 mins so gets a bit uncomfortable but well worth it
Unfortunately unless you get there an hour before the start you would not see anything. Too many tickets sold for the amount of space available. We gave up trying to see within 5 Minutes.
The Legong dance show at the Royal Palace was a stunning display of traditional Balinese music and dance. The setting was magical, the costumes were vibrant, and the performers were incredibly skilled. A must-see for anyone wanting to experience authentic Balinese culture!
This was a very interesting cultural dance show. They play using different traditional Indonesian instrument and perform nine dances in beautiful outfits. Walk in price was only six dollars.
Penglipuran Village in Bali is a breathtaking cultural destination that showcases the island’s traditional way of life. Known for its well-preserved architecture, clean environment, and stunning bamboo forests, this village offers visitors a glimpse into Bali’s rich heritage. Walking through its beautifully arranged pathways, you’ll find intricately decorated homes and local residents dressed in traditional attire. The village is especially vibrant during festivals, with ornate decorations lining the streets. A visit to Penglipuran is a must for those looking to experience Bali’s authentic culture and peaceful atmosphere.
A glimpse into Bali's culture and history. The dancers used every part of body to tell the story, even their eyes. Loved it
This Balenese dance is a fluid ciordination of footwork, hand, fingers, neck and face and eyes that emote. The day we went it enacted an episode from an Indian epic Mahabharat. A part of dance was a synchronized dance by two dancers with eyes closed.. This mesmerizing performance lasted 90 minutes.
Beautiful performance of traditional Legon Dance with the magical backdrop of Ubud Palace, where the descendants of the Balinese kingdom still resides.
The outfits were beautiful. The dance was great to start but then it just looked repetitive, we left half way through.
Tickets were oversold, therefore not enough seats or spaces to view the dancing. Music was nice would’ve liked to have seen the show. They sell beer, drinks and pringles inside. Rating 2 for the music, food and the palace itself was nice to look at otherwise would rate lower.
The skill of the performers and musicians, the beauty of the costumes. It must represent many years of history as well as training and practice. Such skill.
It was okay - costumes are beautiful but the show is a little boring - even though it is only 1 hour long. I would say the crowd started thinning out 40 minutes in to the performance. The seating isn't very comfortable and you really do have to show up at least an hour early to have a good seat where you can see everything
I did not like this show at all it was overly crowded there was nowhere to see it you could not see anything going on and it just was not what I expected but I guess you get what you pay for They also do not do refunds for no reason at all and they do not change the date we waste it money in bought tickets 2 times because they gave us the wrong date and would not even refund us or change to date so we had to buy tickets again.
The dance and performance were captivating. It was hard to look away once it started. Seating at the palace is extremely limited so I recommend getting there maybe an hour early to get a good seat.
I went on a Thursday evening so the 90-minute show was the Legong Trance and Paradise Dance. I have NEVER seen anything like this before ...... it was heartstoppingly amazing. It was easy to tell that the dancers were professionals. The costumes are incredible. Seating is intimate and very close to the stage, so you are up close to the dancers. Don't miss this show!!!!!!!
The dancers were beautiful and interesting. It was difficult to see given folks standing on the way….
We attended a performance here and the dancers, costumes and the setting is fabulous. I would get here early to get a good sit and be prepared for any seating to be uncomfortable after a while as the performances are quite long and sitting can range from sitting on steps to plastic chairs, to sitting on a metal riser of sorts.
Slow start to a performance of dancers whose proficiency increased as the show went on. By the end I was wanting to see the whole show again. I will definitely continue to bring visitors here and recommend to others.
Excellent presentation. At first, I thought watching strange dances for an hour and a half would be a bit boring, but in the end, time flew by unnoticed. Pay attention to the girls' fingers during the dance: I can't imagine how they manage to bend them back so much. And this is not just dancing! It's a whole four-act story that you probably won't understand unless you Google it beforehand or read the brochure given at the entrance. Yes, to get the best seats, you need to arrive about 25-30 minutes before the start.
Really magnificent dance show at the Palace of Ubud. It lasts about an hour and is characterized by the magnificent dances, extremely engaging, the beauty of the costumes and the expressiveness of the faces and gestures.
I think it depends on the skill of the people who performed at that time, but I have seen several good legon dancers in the past, so the difference was obvious and disappointing. The performance of the instruments and the atmosphere were good, though. I waited about an hour before, but I thought I didn't have to go that far to see it, so there won't be another one. It was interesting to watch the women selling juice and the vendors selling tickets before the dance started.
They sell about 3x more tickets than there are seats available and so in the end people pile up everywhere and we don’t see anything...
Very particular and interesting show. Beautiful Balinese dance and beautiful costumes used during the show
Beautiful dance show, with traditional gamelan music, in ancient Hindu temple. Drinks are sold and it was completely sold out, so cozy busy! Beautiful costumes and entertaining dance theater, Balinese culture!
It’s okay to know the Balinese customs, although this dance seemed more touristic than anything else. Tell a story but you haven't just heard about what it's about. It's strange, but it must be seen.
