Itinerary
The wineries of Kumeu date back to the 1930s when wine families of Croatian origin established winemaking in the area. These families are still living and working in the area today, making some of New Zealand's most renowned wines. These vineyards contrast with the spectacular coastal scenery of the area. Leave behind the bustle of Auckland city and head northwest to join our afternoon wine tour and taste the flavours of Kumeu Wine Country, Auckland’s Heritage Wine Region. Enjoy lunch at a contemporary vineyard restaurant, sample world renowned wines and marvel at the rugged surf-fringed coastline nearby. Your first stop is at Soljans Vineyard. Soljans has won many awards for their wines and they are also widely acknowledged in New Zealand as being an expert producer of methode traditionelle (bottle-fermented) sparkling wines.Enjoy lunch and a wine tasting at Soljans Winery restaurant. The winery is built with sunshine in mind and serves Mediterranean-style food with a New Zealand twist, showcasing fresh seasonal produce from around the region.
A short drive takes us to our next winery which is Kumeu River. Set up by the Brajkovich family in the 1940’s all of their grapes are hand harvested and the winery is still run by the family (Michael Brajkovich was New Zealand’s first Master of Wine!). Kumeu River are world famous for their Chardonnay and also produce a range of other wines.
Visit the black sands of Muriwai Beach - see the gannets flying off in the distance and enjoy the views of this stunning surf beach (Gannet colony access will hopefully reopen at some stage but currently not accessible
Your final wine tasting is at West Brook Winery. The West Brook cellar door looks across an idyllic duck pond and terraced picnic area to row after row of vines. The wines reflect true varietal character and their unique regional origins. Without exception they are premium quality and have won numerous awards. This half day ‘wineries out west’ wine tour is a great introduction to the region. * Wineries included may change depending on day of week

This tour was such a delight! Our guide Marri (?) was perfection. Knowledgeable, friendly and funny. 2 great wineries and a fantastic final venue to be able to taste local wines that don’t have their own cellar door. Such a unique and beautiful venue. The lunch at Soljans was absolutely outstanding. The vehicle was super clean, modern and comfortable.
A very cool tour of some smaller wineries. Anne was an excellent guide and the stop to see the ganet colony was definitely a highlight!
Learn the depth of New Zealand wine and travel the breadth of the country with Kelly! Fantastic guide who taught us so much about the culture, wildlife- anything NZ you’d like to know! The wine stops were very educational and the lunch was delicious. Highly recommend this trip 😊
I thoroughly recommend this lovely wine tasting tour. I had a fantastic time from a welcoming guide to knowledgeable wine producers. I was offered the opportunity to sample a range of wines, and lunch was included in the price. The three vineyards we visited were all very different but equally enjoyable.
Very good tour of winery and coastal area. Lunch was fabulous with glass of wine included. Meredith was alovely lady.
Well organised effective tour as it promised. Very compatible people on the tour. Seeing the gannets was a good break from wine tasting. Very comfortable tasting opportunities.
This was a wonderful afternoon of wine tasting at 3 wineries which included a delicious lunch. We were given several choices for lunch which included a glass of wine. We also went to the Tasman sea to observe the gnat birds. The views were stunning and lots of opportunities to take photos. Erin our guide was prompt very knowledgeable about the area and very accommodating. It was a lovely afternoon and I highly recommend as no worries re transport and all tastings arranged ahead of time. A lovely day!
The best and most professional tour ever. Our guide Jason was fantastic, knowledgeable and funny. The wineries were great and the wines very good. Very much recommended. Modern and comfortable vehicle.
What a lovely tour to do..my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our driver guide Erin was fantastic! The wineries were divine, the lunch was fabulous, and our trip to the gannet colony with the breathtaking views was magical..highly recommend and would book this tour again when I come back to Auckland. Loved it!
The wine region in NZ is small but mighty, with many wonderful wines and beautiful vineyards. We loved the local chardonnay and flew home with some tawny ports. Kelley was incredibly knowledgeable and made our tour special.
4 wineries visited along with other noteworthy areas of interest outside of Auckland showing us the beauty of the coastline and local birds. Wineries well chosen. Meredith (our guide) very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions. She was always on time and went out of her way to make it a meaningful day. The day was so informative and fun. Skipping this would have been a mistake.
Jason was a great guide for both the wine region as well as having an in depth knowledge of the native environment. We had a great time with the three wineries we toured. The lunch was amazing! The side trip to the beach was a great break in between tastings. His recommendations for local Auckland restaurants was spot on. We would highly recommend this small intimate tour of boutique wineries.
Catriona was our guide on the day & made this tour so much fun; she has a bubbly personality & is very knowledgeable. It was a lovely day & we enjoyed our visits to the 3 very different wineries, the first one including lunch. We spent a reasonable time at each one, sipping our salubrious wines & chatting amiably within our small group. The absolute highlight for us was our visit to the black sand beach where a great galaxy of gannets were nesting; simply stunning!
A very pleasant afternoon of wine and wildlife watching. The wine tastings were quite varied and well-paced. Delicious lunch with no wait. The gannet colony is so interesting… the time there goes fast!
Great experience. Knowledgeable friendly guide. Nice lunch. Enjoyable wines. Included a nice visit to the coast to see the gannets.
Lovely long half day visiting some boutique vineyards in stunning West Auckland plus beautiful scenery along the way
We had a great time from beginning to end. Wine tasting is opinionated, so I'll speak to the experience. We we're picked up at our hotel and just a short drive to our first tasting. This tasting included wine of our choice and a very nice lunch. Scallops, grilled broccolini,, and caprese salad. Jason, our guide was very knowledgeable about wine and explained the history of the area along the way. Each of the three tastings were on nice vineyards and very relaxed. The tour included a stop on the west shore to observe a Gannet Colony. It was a blustery day and added some adventure to the tour. The last winery was on a luscious piece of property and again very relaxed. Being driven to our hotel front door at the end is a very nice touch. If you have to choose between Waiheke Island and Kumeu, we would highly recommend Kumeu.
The 3 wineries we visited had the most amazing white wines ( I am a red girl) and our driver Annie we the best
Perfect on time pickup and very friendly guide / driver. With only 4 in the group made it easy for the guide. The timing of everything was spot in and she kept us on track. She was lovely and very informative - I think 4 or 5th generation Kiwi. The beach visit also included a walk to the sea bird nesting area, with their new chicks. A great extra surprise of the tour.
If you have difficulties walking up hills or in sand you may want to reconsider or stay close to the bus when stopping at the beach.
Enjoyed Mary very much. The three Vinyards we visited were all very interesting and very different. Enjoyed them all. Tasted port for the first time at our first stop and discovered how good it is. Great tour!
Fantastic guide. Great to see more outside of downtown Auckland. Highly recommend. Wines ok but tour overall was great
Absolutely lovely experience with Ayla! She was so incredibly kind and gave us a very memorable outing.
Great way to spend an afternoon. Our guide, Mairi, (sorry if misspelled) was extremely knowledgeable and great telling us some history about the area and the wineries. Fantastic lunch at Sojan winery. Visited black sand beach and were able to see the Gannett colony. Definitely worth doing.
This was a great outing with a friend. Easy pickup from the hotel, nice lunch and lovely time at each winery. It was also just the two of us and nice that they didn’t cancel it and still too us.
Michelle ran a great tour to the wineries, beach and provided at Soljan a great lunch. Full of information, friendly and great fun. For me one more winery might have been better than the beach. But I knew beach was part of the excursion so not a complain in any shape or form.
Outstanding afternoon with three vineyard tastings and 4-5 vintages at each. Come hungry because lunch is the first stop and the portions are hefty and scrumptious. Add a little beach and bird nesting and it was a fabulous time with fun and gracious driver, Annie. A++
The guide was fantastic, congenital, and funny. We had an amazing lunch and the wineries were interesting. We had a wide sampling of wines between the three places. The guide also took us to see a beautiful beach that he said was representative of New Zealand.
This was a fantastic day! The pace is perfect, group size is nice and the wineries visited and lunch were all amazing. Learned a few things about wine making here and NZ in general. Our guide Tony was perfect. Thanks for a great experience!
Lovely relaxed afternoon with congenial guide and fellow travellers. It was a good introduction to local wines. The stop at the gannet colony was the icing on the cake.
What a great day! Small group makes for more personalized wine tastings. The stop at Muriwai beach may have been my favorite part! The scenery was truly incredible and our guide was very knowledgeable and attentive. Would definitely book again or recommend to a friend. We also packed a lot into a shorter period of time - 3 wineries plus lunch in about a half day (12-5:30p) which was great for me. Sometimes these trips can take up an entire day, but this one left more time for exploring Auckland city on both ends. And the wines were great!
We had an amazing day filled with well chosen, wineries, a fantastic lunch, plus a viewing of gannets. Our guide Meredith provided great information and I highly recommend this tour.
Really enjoyed the wines, the wineries, the countryside, and the beaches. We bought several wines which we truly enjoyed!
Our guide Meredith was the absolute best! Very warm and friendly and talked to everyone in the group as though we'd been friends for years! The wines were amazing in some of the most beautiful sceneries in all of New Zealand! And seeing the gannet colony was wonderful! I highly recommend this tour!
Meredith, our guide was wonderful, very friendly and knowledgeable. The lunch included with the tour was delicious and all three wineries were very enjoyable. It would be nice to add one or two more wineries to the trip. I would certainly recommend this trip to anyone.
This was a wonderful way to end my trip to Australia and New Zealand. Erin was a wonderful guide and the 3 wineries she took us to were wonderful and the owners were very informative. The lunch was delicious and the drive to and from the different stops was lovely. A great day!
Wonderful time. Anne was great. When we came across a “dangerous” road that had all the passengers “nervous” (not really😂) but with Anne’s wealth of experience, she navigated the many “hazards” of the “treacherous” expanse bringing her Travellers to safety!!!
Very nice to try the different styles of NZ wine and see a bit of countryside Auckland. The three places we visited were nice although some of the places did fair small serverings of wine (one sip and that’s it). Also they didn’t really know a lot about the wine production, but maybe that’s just because I’m a bit nerdy with it. Great lunch as well and Mark our tour guide made a great trip to black sand beach too and talking.
Trust your guide. Our, Merideth, was the best. She knows the area and reads her “flock” to give us the best experience.
We took the city tour in the morning with Mary followed by the wine tour with Chris. Both guides were knowledgeable, personable, and fun to tour with. We learned quite a bit and really enjoyed the tours, especially the black sand beach. We thought the wines were good.
This was a very pleasant relaxing few hours. Craig was very knowledgeable, informative and a good driver. I’m also a NZer and learnt much about the area, the wineries and the wines we tasted. Strongly recommend this tour.
A nice afternoon in the country. Small group (7) was really nice. Pick up and drop off at the hotel was a plus. Annie was a very good driver/guide. Very friendly and punctual. I would recommend this outing.
Annie and Erin were excellent tour guides, giving us historical tidbits along the drive to help us get to know how wine made its way to Auckland and New Zealand. They were also very friendly and professional. The van was comfortable and we had a very friendly and lively group, which made it very fun. Soljans winery was lovely and had a wonderful restaurant where we had lunch. Dietary restrictions were well accommodated by Soljans restaurant.
Meredith was a great tour guide! Loved all three vineyards visited. Delicious wine. Highly recommend!
If you are looking for an intimate and interesting winery tour this is the one. Meredith, our guide was great, friendly and knew the area very well. Lunch at Soljans was really good.
The driver)guide Jason was great. A wonderfull man who knews evertthing. A real storyteller. Great Wines, nice lunch,...
Our tour guide Ryan was personable and professional. One of the guests left their phone at a winery and without missing a beat, contacted the necessary people, returned to the winery to pick up the missing phone. He was so kind and did not act like it was an inconvenience retrieve the missing phone. Lunch at Soljans winery was excellent and we enjoyed getting outside Auckland to experience New Zealand countryside.
Great tour. Comfortable van. Excellent driver/guide. Beautiful scenery. Lovely lunch. Alot of excellent wine tastings, especially white wines. Almost too many 😀. I am a solo traveler with a walker and every accomondation was made to make the trip enjoyable. Highly recommend, would use the company on my next cruise to auckland. Thank you
Fun tasting tour! Variety of wines and learned a few things! The black sand beach was cool too! I just wish there was better scenery at the tastings to take better pictures!
