Itinerary
Your tour starts in New Zealand’s largest city. As we drive out of the city your guide will not only set the scene for your adventure today but also point out and guide you past some of the city’s top highlights.
Exiting Auckland we travel south through the stunning Waikato countryside, the most extensive farming area in the world, encountering beautiful scenery, mighty rivers, great photo opportunities, impressive mountains and a variety of farm animals along the way.
Arriving at the first feature attraction ‘Hobbiton’ you will board one of the big green Hobbiton buses and depart on a two and a half hour fully guided tour of this amazing 12 acre movie set, with a professional Hobbiton guide to ensure you get the most out of your visit. During your tour step into the lush pastures of the Shire, visit 44 hobbit holes, see amazing gardens, hear the secrets and stories about the making of the movies and enjoy a cold complimentary beverage at the famous Hobbiton pub ‘The Green Dragon Inn’.
Departing for Rotorua we pass through Tirau on our adventure. Dubbed the 'Corrugated Iron Capital of the World' because of the many unique corrugated iron sculptures and buildings, this town never fails to get a look and a laugh and our guides will point out all the main highlights on the way through.
Arriving at our second feature destination, Te Puia, you will receive a fully guided tour to best experience the geothermal and Maori cultural wonders including: Pōhutu Geyser, Māori Architecture, The National Māori Arts School, geothermal craters, geothermal events and even the chance to view a Kiwi bird in the Kiwi viewing house.
To finish off our Rotorua experience we do a guided driving tour seeing the most famous sites in Rotorua city including: Lake Rotorua, Rotorua Museum, Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) & the Blue Baths.
Sadly we must start to head north again but your day is not over with a fully guided return trip to Auckland including secret stops along the way.

The tour far exceeded my expectations. The van was very comfortable and the sound system for hearing the guide was excellent. The guide Jeoffrey was very knowledgeable about many subjects, including New Zealand and Māori history, customs and culture, geology, geography, New Zealand economy and industry, indigenous and invasive plants and animals, Māori language, current trends, etc. I felt that I learned a lot from Jeoffrey and now have a much better understanding of New Zealand and a far greater appreciation for its natural beauty. Jeoffrey went the extra mile in accommodating the tour members, providing excellent restaurant recommendations, and even delivering my cell phone I inadvertently left in the van to me at my restaurant table. You are in for a treat if you have Jeoffrey as your guide.
I had an amazing day visiting Hobbiton and Te Puia! Everything was perfectly organized, and both places were absolutely beautiful and unforgettable. Our guide Trent was fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole trip even more enjoyable. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! 😊
It was a great day from start to end. Our driver and guide Vicki was exceptional ! She kept us entertained all along the trip ( LoR movie on the way back was the perfect way to end this memorable day). She provided us with lots of information and made our experience so much more enjoyable. PS : Having watched only the first LoR movie, I was afraid that I wouldn’t enjoy Hobbiton, but it ended up being the highlight of the day. The tour in Te Puia and seeing Kiwis and a Geyser for the first time was nice as well. A big Thank You to Vicki once again. The experience is 100% worth it and would definitely recommend.
Jeoff was an awesome tour guide. Very friendly and knowledgeable!
It was a packed day that started early in the morning but our guide Jeoff brought kind positivity, was extremely organised and taught us more about New Zealand’s rich and varied culture along the way. Hobbiton was beautiful. Then we got lucky and spotted kiwi birds AND geysers at Te Puia. I would recommend this trip especially if you have limited time and want to see as much as possible in one day!
John is a brilliant tour guide/driver. A lot of fun, informative, kept the group energy up from 5.45 till the drop-off. I had a thought to drop off at Rotorua for the Māori show if there were tickets. He went out of his way to check a hotel room where they normally stay. He called the office to check if I could be picked up the next day. All was set but the evenin experience ticket I had seen was gone. But I appreciated the effort and desire to help me experience the Māori evening. Def recommended and will do more with them.
It was the best! The drive there was smooth and our driver Trent made sure to keep us all comfortable with some snacks and water along the way. He also made sure to inform us of the time, where to meet, and what to do to make sure the entire trip would go without a hitch. Hobbiton was the best and we thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want more time we would suggest getting a somewhat private tour to really get into the world of the Hobbits and enjoy it freely. All the admission fees were already included in the package though, so we can’t complain. One thing we would have wished for Te Puia would have been to experience the cultural presentation and see the Haka. Unfortunately the tour only included the first package. We suggest upgrading even just to the higher package next to it to avail of the cultural performance which we think will tie up the whole experience and make it better. Aside from that, the tour was amazing. Worth enjoying a full day of driving, seeing the sights, and learning more about New Zealand.
Well planned and comfortable vehicle
This was a fun and informative tour. Simon our driver/guide provided information about New Zealand and what we would see along the drive. Hobbiton was amazing, it boosted the memories of LOR movies - so much that we have started to re-watch. Te Puia cultural park was informative about Māori cultural plus there’s a huge geyser and we saw 2 kiwi birds. Long by great day!
Hobbiton Tour Such a magical experience! Hobbiton is absolutely beautiful and feels just like stepping into the movie. Te Puia An amazing cultural and geothermal experience. The geysers and Māori culture were fascinating and well presented. Thanks again to Jeoffey for the smooth drive and great guidance throughout the day. A truly memorable visit!
Great day tour combination for Hobbiton and Te Puia! Great Cheeky Michael! He told us stories and gave information all throughout the tour. It was a great experience! Cheers Cheeky Tours!
Thank you, Cheeky Kiwi Travel, for our awesome full day experience to Hobbiton & Ta Puia Rotorua. We had a great day out, despite the rain. Our tour guide, Alessandro, provided us with umbrellas, snacks & water and was friendly & knowledgeable of the areas visited. He also made sure we were comfortable and happy at all times. Although our day was very long, we would highly recommend this trip to any first-time visitors to Auckland as we learnt so much.
We enjoyed our tour with Michael to Hobbiton. We have seen sets for movies before but you really feel like you are there when visiting. We also went to Te Puia which we enjoyed, but Hobbiton was the highlight.
Amazing Day and John was an incredible guide. Fun, easy to get along with, entertaining but gives you time to relax. Thanks mate
Excellent- Knowledgeable- Punctual-Tour operator Michael with Cheeky Travels Van- Great condition- AC working , cell charging port. In one day you got to see Hobitton and Te Puia All included for entry tickets with the price.
We had Grant as our driver, we had such a wonderful experience. The day is long but worth the trip. We did hobbiton then geysers with cultural tour, kiwi house and hangi. Absolutely delicious and informative.
Cameron was really nice as a guide. He provided good support to all of us. He took a group pic of us at Hobbiton.
A great day with a great guide! Totally recommend!! It was so nice not to think about logistics or driving or anything!
This tour was fantastic. We had a great tour guide (John) who was so professional and knowledgeable about the sites we were visiting, history of the region and also looked after all components of our day. His timing was impeccable and he was engaging and ensured everyone on the tour had a great day.
Our guide John was droll and gave us a lot of interesting information. We had a mixed group on board that became friends by the end of our long day. Hobbiton was a lovely experience and Te Puia was amazing! The geysers were incredible!! I’d do it all over again! Thank you to John for being a great guide!
This was the absolute best day trip! John was our guide and was fantastic. From start to finish, he was knowledgeable and witty all at once. Everything was seamless. They clearly had all of the tips and tricks down and made the best use of time. Hobbiton was amazing and so fun to get to see the area up close! The afternoon and Te Puia was also fantastic and very educational. The van was fully stocked with snacks and waters so that the day was as easy as possible for us. Would 10/10 recommend!
This tour was one of the best parts of my vacation! The drive from Auckland was long, but the Cheeky Kiwi bus was very clean, spacious, and had comfortable seats and USB chargers. Hobbiton and Te Puia were incredible destinations and were well worth the time and money! Additionally, this tour was memorable because of our AWESOME guide, Grant who took incredible care of our group. It was very clear that Grant was an experienced guide; He was provided us with water and snacks during the drive and made sure we had plenty of opportunities to stretch/use the restroom/get additional snacks along the way. He also answered our group's many questions about Zealand patiently and informatively. I highly recommend Cheeky Kiwi / Grant!
An amazing experience. Always wanted to do the visit to Hobbiton and it didn’t disappoint. The sheer vastness and layout of this area with its “Props” was an eye opener. Our tour guide through this area, Brad, was a delight with his quick wit, and knowledge of Hobbiton Rotorua was also an incredible outing especially a better appreciation for the Māori culture, visit to the Geothermals and the kiwi bird sanctuary Our driver throughout this tour , Grant, was also amazing with his outstanding knowledge and professionalism
A great trip that we all enjoyed! Our driver John was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to share the area with us. Hobbiton was much more interesting that I had hoped it would be, and Rotorua was a fun learning experience. Check your messages on TripAdvisor the day before in case the trip departs a bit earlier than listed. Would certainly do again!
Cam was an awesome tour guide. The day went as planned.Hobbiton is a really well maintained attraction.
The tours were great and the guide (Simon) was really knowledgeable and did an awesome job answering questions. Would definitely go back for other tours!
It was an awesome tour. The highlight for me were the geysers, seeing them erupt so high into the air was amazing. The Hobbiton movie set was brilliant, the lush greenery and open space just loved. My only complaint was that the Hangi lunch was included in the price, however the tour events overlapped and they could not fit the lunch in. Viator needs to be aware of this so that better planning and coordination could be done. Our tour guide Michael did get us a sandwich as this was an all day tour and we were hungry, plus a small refund
Our tour guide Cameron was very knowledgeable about the sites and made the long car rides enjoyable. We really liked Hobbiton and the tour at Te Puia. We wish there was a bit more time dedicated to Te Puia as we were unable to see the Maori haka.
This was a really great day tour. I enjoyed the stop in Hobbiton, but I was really in it for Te Puia and the lunch and concert. However, there was a mix-up and I wasn't allowed to do both the lunch and concert; I had to do one or the other instead (I chose concert). Still, I had a great time. The guided tour at Te Puia was very interesting and informative. Loved seeing Maori artisans at work on beautiful pieces.
Great and knowledgeable guides. Super easy no stress pick up and drop off. The two places were great and well organized. The guide took care of everything for us. I traveled solo and it was nice to have someone take care of things and driving for a change. Really recommend
A HUGE thank you to John and Cheeky Kiwi Tours for a fantastic tour experience, John made our adventures fun as well as informative and we appreciated the out of the way unplanned stops along the way. If you go with Cheeky Kiwi Tours and are lucky enough to get Jonn, be prepared to sit back and relax, John takes care of pretty much everything along the way, he's even lovely enough to stop and take family snaps along the way so that everyone has the chance to be in the family/group photo. We will definitely be spreading the word regarding John and cheeky kiwi tours to our Aussie friends and family.
The People at Hobbiton were absolutely wonderful and amazing! A person (not in our group) had a bit of a fall, and the staff did everything to help her out and made this our trip even better, by showing such compassion. The site is worth the 15,000 mile trip. Out Tour operators were knowledgeable, and very helpful. The Maori Culture Center is beautiful and amazing. Not well suited for people with mobility difficulties, but they made efforts to help. The unfortunate mishap was the Viator booked us for a Hangi luncheon (sort of the Maori version of a Hawaiian Luau) that didn't exist. Not the first miscommunication from Viator. Hobbiton and Te Puia were both wonderful!
Enjoyed the tour, with one exception - I paid for Bus wifi, which didn’t work. Would not recommend paying for that option.
We could not have asked for more! Our guide Andre was fantastic! He is extremely knowledgeable,a very safe driver and has a great sense of humor. It was a long ride back and forth from Auckland, but Andre made the time fly by. If you're LOTR enthusiasts like us, you don't want to miss this tour! Visiting the geothermal valley in Rotorua was a great bonus... absolutely fascinating. Thanks Andre and the rest of the crew at Cheeky Kiwi for a great day!
Our tour guide Lance was spectacular. Prompt, pleasant and entertaining. He shares freely his knowledge of NZ and the Maori culture. Well worth the price for Hobbiton, the buffet lunch and the cultural performance.
There were 3 of us visiting from Northern California and decided to take this tour. I was a bit skeptical as I'm not a fan of tours (especially all day ones) or Hobbit stuff. I LOVED the tour and Lance (Our trusty guide & driver) made it fun, interesting, and comfortable. Hobbiton was beautiful! You don't need to be a fan to enjoy and appreciate the creativity and beauty of the landscapes. So many 'Insta' moments too! Our time at Te Puia was wonderful. So much history, beauty, nature, art and great food. There were only a total of 6 of us in the van so the ride was comfortable. Lance made several 'pit stops' for us to stretch and use the bathrooms along the way. I can not recommend this tour enough and have already told several people about my great experience on this tour. KIA ORA my friends!
We started our tour with Jack leaving at 6 am. It was well worth the early departure because we were able to stop and experience a beautiful sun rise. Our guide was a wealth of knowledge and very fun. We also were the first group of the day for Hobbiton. Snacks were provided. I enjoyed the fact that we each introduced ourselves so we knew something about the others on the tour. We were a group of 7 so that also was great. We met up with Tania and joined her group to go to Te pia. and a quick view of rotorua. She treated us to some special places. We did not do the buffet or the cultural ceremony as that was not a part of our your. I would recommend them for your tour.
What a wonderful day! It is a long one, so I was happy that we had a great tour guide, Lance. He was very knowledgeable about New Zealand and it’s history. There is quite a bit of driving involved, but the time passes quick and the small tour bus was comfortable. Lance pointed out different interesting places and things along the way. We had provided snacks and water along the way. Hobbiton, as expected, was absolutely lovely and just a beautiful place to be. We were the first tour of the day, meaning no other people in our photos of the place! And Hobbiton in the morning after the fog has lifted and the plants are covered in dew is a sight not to be missed! I loved Rotorua! It was such an informative place. The Maori culture show and hangi lunch is well worth it. You won’t leave hungry, that’s for sure. The people working at Te Puia are passionate and very willing to teach you about their history and what they are doing now. Overall, it was a great day and a highlight of my holiday!
