Having recently emigrated to New Zealand and having visited Auckland severak times over the years we have been coming to visit our family, we thought we knew all there was to know about this great city. Well we didn't!! John was a superb tour guide and showed us such interesting areas of the city and its surroundings, feeding us with such fascinating historical facts. This is a must tour for all visitors to the city and we loved every minute of the 4 hour trip. Thank you John and Auckland City Tours.

Return
- There is a vehicle drop-off and pick-up area just to the right of the Ferry Building (behind some big red gates). We will pull in here at 10 am. Alternatively, we offer central pick-up options. Please let us know where you are staying, and we will advise the closest pick-up point.
Itinerary
Our main pick up point is alongside the Ferry Building on Queens Wharf. There's a pick-up & drop off area, that's the spot. Alternatively, we offer 4 central pick-up locations. Let us know where you are staying and we will advise the closest pick-up point. This is a very comprehensive tour and we pack a lot into the 3.5 to 4 hours. You will get a real feel for Auckland. It's geography, history, sights, and our way of life. This tour is family run, and the commentary is detailed, full of insights from a local perspective and delivered with humor.
We drive along the downtown waterfront area, past the Viaduct Harbour, which is one of Auckland top "going out" spots. Great selection of restaurants and bars. Lots of boats, and home to the America's Cup yachts, and Whale & Dolphin watching boats
The Wynyard Quarter has been transformed into an attractive waterfront restaurant area and is home to the Auckland Fish market. great place to revisit later for some Fish and Chips.
Westhaven Marina is the largest Marina in the Southern Hemisphere. We stop here for great photos of the Harbour, Harbour Bridge, and the Marina. Sometimes we see Bungy Jumpers leaping off the Harbour Bridge. Sorry., but Bungy Jumping is not included in the tour, but I can help you organise it.... There's also nice clean bathrooms here.
We travel over the Bridge to the North Shore, heading to Northcote Point.
We visit Shoal Bay in Northcote Point for arguably the best views of Auckland City from across the Harbour. Great place for photos.
Optional coffee stop. We don't stop on this tour for a formal Morning or Afternoon "Tea/Coffee" break as I prefer to show you as much of Auckland as possible. There's a couple of nice choices for takeaway drinks and snacks. Just bring them back to the bus. I have drink holders installed for this very reason.
Ponsonby is a Victorian/ Edwardian suburb full of lovely older buildings. Fantastic shopping, with that point of difference, and mostly privately owned shops. An extremely varied selection of stores, from fashion boutiques, gift shops, homewares, antiques, cafe's and restaurants. Well worth a re-visit after the tour.
Known as a "colourful' area in the past, it's making a come-back. The nightclubs, bars, and tattoo parlors are still here, but there's also an interesting selection of shops, and cafe's. Definitely worth a re-visit.
Fantastic elevated views of Auckland City from the summit of Mt Eden. It's a 5 - 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the Summit, but well worth the walk. There's bathrooms here.
We drive through the Auckland Domain ( Park) and past the Auckland Museum. You would at least 3-4 hours to visit the Museum, so we don't stop, but the Museum is well worth a visit. Excellent exhibit on Maori and Polynesian culture, and the daily Maori cultural performance is most enjoyable.
We drive through the Victorian suburb of Parnell, and past the Parnell Rose Gardens. If the flowers are in bloom we can stop for some photos.
We are now back on the waterfront, where we enjoy a picturesque drive past Ohaku Bay, Mission Bay, Kohimarama Beach, and on to Saint Heliers.
After Achilles Point we drive through the seaside village of Saint Heliers, and then back along the waterfront, to downtown Auckland.
Achilles Point in the suburb of Saint Heliers affords wonderful views out over the many islands in the Hauraki Gulf. There's also a nice view of Auckland City in the distance. Great photo stop.
We drive along the tree-lined Symonds St, past the University of Auckland, where we head into the downtown area. .
In the downtown city area, I'll point out the Auckland Art Gallery, and show you some of the smaller side streets, like High St, and O'Connell street where there are interesting shops.
Queen St is the main shopping street in Auckland. I point out many lovely heritage buildings, like the Auckland Town Hall & Civic Theater.
We conclude our tour back at the Ferry Building. Alternatively, if you are staying in the downtown area, I'm happy to drop you back at your hotel. This tour is delivered with a comprehensive commentary, not just about the places we visit, but also about the geography, history , and an insight into our way of life. There's' a few funny bits as well.

Very good tour and guide was very helpful to explain in detail in all events
Great few hours in Auckland. Jono was a great driver/guide and we left with a good understanding of Auckland. Excellent value and very interesting.
Great trip with John, a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Highly recommend especially if only in Auckland for a limited time.
Paul was an excellent driver and tour guide. We stopped 5 times to take pictures around Auckland. Two stops had restroom facilities. Walking around Mt Eden, Maungawhau was a highlight with great views in all directions.
Really enjoyed our trip. Great value for money & provided a view of the wider Auckland city area. Our guide was brilliant too! Would recommend
John was our guide and was not only great source of information, he was a great driver! This was an excellent value and we literally hit all the major spots of interest in and around Auckland. This was a well designed, informative tour. Just be more specific on meeting up. I was right where I was supposed to be for pick up and it was never conveyed in my information I should be looking for a van. Confusing. Nevertheless outstanding tour.
A great day with a wonderful tour guide Paul was so friendly and knowledgeable about his home town and we loved that his love for Auckland was shared with us Such a perfect way to be introduced to Auckland Highly recommend and thank you Paul
Great tour. Great guide, Paul!
Our travel guide was so knowledgable about Auckland and its history. He was so friendly and answered all our questions.
An excellent tour of Auckland and its outlying suburbs! Our guide was entertaining, with a great sense of humor, and extremely knowledgeable about the history and landmarks. I wish we’d had more time to explore the city, as he gave us tons of suggestions for things to do, beach experiences, and eateries. Meeting point was central and easy to find. Comfortable “mini bus”, and there were ample stops for photos, coffee/snack, and restroom breaks. Don’t miss this!
We had very limited time in Auckland and had already been up the Sky Tower, seen the War Memorial Museum, Winter Gardens and walked through the parks and town centre. On impulse we signed up for this trip as it went to places we would never have been able to get to on our own. So glad we did. Seeing the city from different places was great and driving through the suburbs and seeing the architecture really helped us to understand the place. Jono was very knowledgeable and seemed to know the answers to everything he was asked. A really enjoyable trip and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting a drive around the highlights. Only issue was finding the meeting place ( which was not as stated on the instructions!!) Just through the red gates would have been helpful!
Johno was fabulous. Highly knowledgeable, great communicator. I learned a lot and enjoyed myself. Highly recommend!
John, the driver was excellent and gave a very good commentary. A very pleasant and informative morning
We enjoyed the tour. Josh had a very good broad knowledge of both Maori and the history of Auckland. He pointed out significant landmarks, streets and buildings and shared loads of interesting facts. He was welcoming and worked hard to make our excursion enjoyable. Thank you! We appreciated the stock at the bakery where we could purchase lunch.
Great tour and solid value. John was a great guide.
Great way to see the city. Jono our driver was very informative and had lots of knowledge being a local. Well worth doing
Tour bus was a bit cramped but everything else was good!
It was one of the best Viator tours we have ever had. Paul was very informative and organized. We learned so much about this beautiful city of Auckland.
Guide/driver was knowledgeable and communicated clearly. Covered both city and surrounding area. Gave the tour some great views of Auckland which would be unknown to most visitors.
It was a good overview of Aukland- we even learned some Moari words! Our driver Josh was knowledgeable, warm, friendly and had a few "dad" jokes too!
Great guide. Interesting and informative. Enjoyable experience. Clean comfortable bus recommend for good introduction to Auckland
The Auckland 1/2 day trip was great to see much of what Auckland has to offer if you are pushed for time. The highlight is Mount Eden where you get great views of the whole Auckland area. John was very knowledgable about his local area and made it an interesting yet unrushed trip.
A very professional & comprehensive tour but also relaxed with a very friendly & knowledgeable guide.
The tour was great! Jono did a great job showing us the sights of the city and giving us great information to go along with them. We covered a lot and was a great way to start our trip!
Paul was absolutely first rate . His knowledge was superb and combined with a great tour of the city made it very informative . He never stopped talking for the 4 hours . Great spots for photos and a good mix of activity on and off the bus .
Paul the tour guide knows his stuff. Very knowledgeable about Auckland and NZ. Great tour if you want to know some local knowledge of Auckland 😊👍🏼
Excellent city tour. Our guide was John and he had an excellent knowledge of the area. Would highly recommend.
Thoroughly enjoyed this half day tour of Auckland. Our guide & driver John was brilliant. We covered so much & his commentary was great. We saw the major sites of the city. This is a must do while in Auckland. Esp if you are only visiting for a day or two. Great value for money. The 4hrs is well worth it. Plenty of time to stop at various points & even to walk up Mt Eden. Loved it. Highly recommend this tour. Brilliant.
Jono our guide was a wealth of knowledge, his commentary was excellent and kept us entertained and amused. The city tour was fantastic it was an excellent introduction to Auckland and the surrounding areas and main attractions. Definitely value for money and I will definitely recommend it.
John was a great tour guide! He knows so much about Auckland NZ and we covered a lot of territory. He communicated well, had an easy driving style (no quick starts and stops), content was very interesting and the pace of the tour was not rushed. He took the time to answer all my questions so really a 5 Star effort!
Great tour with lots of information. Even though it rained off and on we saw some great sights and learnt more about Auckland
It was very informative! It’s too bad we had one guy on the trip that our guide had to go back and three separate times!
Great introduction to Auckland. Wonderful guide, thank you for sharing history and tips of where to go and what to do. Lovely stop with cafe and lots of photo opportunities. Thank you so much.
Really good tour, guide was so informative but not imposing, learnt so much about the history of Auckland and saw many sights. Mostly on a mini bus, stops for phots and one short walk, worth doing the walk for the views of the city. Good introduction to the city, would recommend. Pick up point was easy to find and a nice leisurely 10am start for 4 full hours.
It was all made pleasant by Tom, our tour guide, who was accommodating to our needs. He understand the level of intensity we could handle and made sure to alter the trip to our needs. We appreciated that. He added the simple gesture of providing us with a snack with a bottle of water each. Thank you, Tim. All the best, Vimala.
A wonderful morning with a warm and knowledgeable guide. Great way to see so much in a short amount of time!
A great first day in the city experience that lets you see a lot of the hits and some of the places you might not know about!
This was a great overview of the Auckland area, giving a taste of all the city has to offer and where to come back for more
Great guide, very informative and friendly. We saw all around Auckland and was told so much about the volcanoes and Auckland's history and up to today.
Really interesting commentary of our trip around various areas and suburbs of Auckland, delivered with a good sense of humour. John certainly looked after us.
A very knowledgeable driver who took us to different parts of the city that you wouldn't usually see. A great way to get your bearings & decide where you want to explore
John was an amazing tour guide, very informative, stories along the way and chats at the stops. This tour covers lots of areas of Auckland you wouldnt necessarily see if not on a tour,.especially enjoyed Mt Eden.
Wonderful 4 hours. Very knowledgable tour guide in Jono. We had more time to see things as there were only a few on the tour. Lunch time shop. OMG, what a place.!!The large pod of dolphins was put on especially for us and we were all very impressed. Highly recommend.
Awesome commentary from Jono which ticks off all the information you need Highly recommended for anyone
Really worth doing. It was a great way to see the city. The tour guide John was brilliant - he was friendly and really informative. Definitely worth the short walk to the summit of Mt Eden for the views, and I still had time for a coffee and sausage roll in the cafe
Very interesting and informative guide. The running commentary was set just right. The whole thing was professionally organised.
Excellent guide and informative tour
Loved this tour! Very informative and lots of great stops to enjoy the views. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting Auckland.
