The Bombay Hills are a range of hills to the south of Auckland, New Zealand. Though only a small and seemingly insignificant range of hills, they lie at the southern boundary of the Auckland region, and serve as a divide between Auckland and the Waikato region. directly named after the ship Bombay, The ship itself was named after the Indian city of Bombay (now Mumbai). Bombay Means: a breed of black short-haired medium-sized cat.
We stop to get some great coffee at your own expense and a comfort break before we continue our journey into the Coromandel Peninsula region.
Embrace a rare opportunity to see Cathedral Cove, a breathtaking natural rock formation made famous by appearing in The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian movie! From the north end of the beach, a walking track leads along the cliff top and then descends to the Cove. Here a gigantic arched cavern passes through a white rock headland to join two secluded coves. Enjoy Cathedral Cove to explore, photograph, swim and simply enjoy this special place. Walk beneath the sweeping cove giving you an opportunity to take that perfect photo!
Deep within the earth a natural spring runs beneath Hot Water Beach, bubbling up to emerge through the sand in the form of naturally heated mineral water. At the southern end of the beach, it’s possible to dig your own hot pool in the sand. Relaxing in your own spa pool meters from the Pacific Ocean is a very unique feeling!
After an exhilarating fun-filled adventure experience at Coromandel, it is now time to head back to Auckland to conclude your evening and drop-off at your hotel in Auckland.

Great day with Karthik in a small group tour— very comfortable throughout, starting with the spacious Sprinter van for the 5 of us. Everything was well organized/ curated/ tailored— including knowing when to visit hot water beach and where to find the best place. He was super informative and his hospitable personality made the entire trip a pleasure. Both beaches were well worth seeing, and while trip to get there wasn’t super short, it was very manageable with a couple of food stops where the food was quite good- very fresh and tasty. Hike down to Cathedral Cove isn’t short but great when you get there… we ended up taking a water taxi on way back instead (nice relief after a long day and that hike)!
We had a fantastic day with Karthik as our tour guide to Cathedral Cove and Hot Beach! The day began with a drive to and through the Coromandel Peninsula to reach the path to Cathedral Cove with a comfort stop for food and coffee. The day was clear and sunny and Karthik’s commentary during our drive helped us understand the geology and history of New Zealand. The walk to Cathedral cove took roughly 30-40 minutes with sections of uphill but all on a paved pathway. It was a light to moderate hike through the forest to reach a stunning beach. The arch at Cathedral cove is a must see and must photograph spot! The beach and swimming area is clear ocean water and soft sand. I highly recommend taking the water taxi back instead of hiking back simply because the hike will be mostly uphill going back and the water taxi allows for more time on the beach followed by views of the cove from the water. Karthik made our whole day easy, providing guidance and snacks and sharing his knowledge of the area. After water taxi drop off and Karthik’s pick up from Hahei Beach, we went to a tucked away lunch spot called Hot Waves, where the food was not only delicious but also artistically prepared. Karthik reserved a table outside in the shade where we enjoyed a laid back lunch with the company of Ron the cat. Then it was on to our second stop at Hot Beach! The tide was still too high to fully dig a hole, but Karthik knew exactly where to go on the beach to feel the hot water by shifting our feet into the sand until it was warm warm warm and then HOT! Such a cool experience! We had a leisurely ride back to Auckland with a stop to photograph the Twin Kauri trees! This was one of my favorite days in New Zealand! Book it!
We had a fantastic time on our tour. The coromandel Peninsula is a truly breathtaking area Karthik was a magnificent guide, he was funny, charming and very knowledgeable. The tour was lovely! Even with an early start, it was a great way to spend a day on vacation. The hot water beach and the cathedral cove were both amazing, just prepare for the treck to the Cove (about 20 minutes on a trail that changes to some steep inclines throughout). The best part was our tour guide/ driver Mary, who was very personable and was lovely to chat with as we travelled to and from Auckland.

This was a great tour. Both beaches were amazing. We loved the nature and the scenery at the Cathedral cove. Karthik gave us all the details about the area and its history. The timing was perfect, so we get the best experience depending on tides.

The Coromandel Peninsula experience trip for the day was one-of-a-kind and something we won’t forget! The attractions selected were a nice variety with the train ride through the mountains was great! The walk to Cathedral Cove was beautiful the whole way and the beach was stunning! Our tour guide, Karthik really made the experience memorable. He was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. The van was very clean and comfortable with plenty of water & snacks. It was a great day trip from Auckland and one we are all glad we did so we could see these attractions and have a great day!

Great day trip to Coromandel Coast visiting Driving Creek Railway, Narnia Land - Cathedral Cove, and Thermal Beach. Karthik provided a wonderful convenience pack for each of us including crisps, chocolate bar, water, tissues, antibacterial gel & pen. Given there was quite some time travelling we would have welcomed some narrative about where we were visiting and what to expect for example the steep descent and steps involved in the walk to & from Cathedral Cove.
the drive was very nice, friendly. But i had a bad weather, rainy all day. the train has a very nice view and cathedral cove is very impressive. I recomand this trip but it's better without rain.
