This was a long day with no regrets! Our family of 5 booked a private tour from Auckland to Rotorua Te Puia with Hangi buffet and then drove to see the Waitomo Glow Worms Cave. We loved it all. Our guide, Doug, met us right outside the port of our cruise ship and was amazing! We had plenty to talk about throughout the day. He personalized our trip with a few extra stops along the way to stretch, shop, take pictures and see some highlights. He took some pictures for us, provided umbrellas when it rained and joined us for a quick take away dinner at our request. Te Puia was great and the Glow Worms Cave tour was amazing!

As you pause here for a short coffee break, enjoy the fresh country air and take in views of the nearby volcanic peaks. This stop adds a touch of local flavour and relaxation to your journey south.
The Waikato Region is one of New Zealand’s most picturesque areas, known for its rolling green pastures, winding rivers, and peaceful countryside charm. As you travel through this heartland, you’ll see landscapes that have inspired stories and captured imaginations worldwide. The region is dotted with small towns, farmland, and scenic vistas that offer a glimpse into rural New Zealand life. It creates the perfect backdrop on the way to the magical Waitomo Caves and the geothermal wonders of Rotorua.
Otorohanga, fondly known as New Zealand’s “Kiwiana Town,” is a celebration of all things uniquely Kiwi. As you pass through, you’ll spot quirky displays and tributes to the nation’s icons, from buzzy bees to famous figures. It’s a cheerful roadside highlight that adds colour and character to your journey.
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must-see destination, famous for their breathtaking underground beauty. As you explore, you’ll encounter impressive limestone formations shaped over millions of years, creating a natural cathedral beneath the earth. The highlight is a silent boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, where thousands of tiny glowworms light up the darkness like a starry night sky. This extraordinary experience blends nature, wonder, and a sense of magic that stays with you long after you leave. Note: This part of the itinerary is experienced as a guided small group tour.

Highlights include Lake Rotorua, the historic Rotorua Museum, the beautifully kept Government Gardens, the famous Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring), and the elegant Blue Baths. If time allows, there may also be a stop at a local souvenir shop where you can browse discounted gifts and sample New Zealand’s renowned Manuka Honey.

The experience brings together natural wonder and cultural heritage in one unforgettable setting. Note: This part of the itinerary is experienced as a guided small group tour.
