This is a very thorough tour of Auckland’s volcanic coastline and landmarks. Lots of great views and interesting facts. Just keep in mind that none of these volcanoes are active. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and personable. A great way to spend a day in Auckland.

Jerome was a fantastic guide. You can tell that he is excited to share Auckland’s history and natural beauty. This is a long tour (about five miles total walking and some up and down around the craters in the morning portion) but it is worth every minute.
This is a volcano tour that also provides the best views of Auckland. You will see views of Auckland and the bay that are breathtaking. The company could run this tour as: Breathtaking Views of Auckland then just talk about volcanoes. Jerome is very knowledgeable about Volcanoes, Auckland, and meat pies (ask for a stop at the bakery for meat pies). Wonderful day with him.
It was nice getting outside the city and learning about the different volcanoes surrounding the area. At the end of the tour we were able to take the ferry from Davenport back to downtown Auckland. We had a wonderful day.
Great excursion! Very knowledgeable and friendly team. Mike went above and beyond by dropping us off at our hotel and arranging the next leg of the excursion to be picked up at our hotel. This was great as our excursion started as soon as we got off the ship and had our luggage with us.
Visited several of the extinct volcanoes which ring Auckland. Great knowledge and explanations from Jerome.
Mark was great! He is very knowledgeable and friendly. We learned a lot about Auckland and all of the volcanoes! I wouldn't have guessed there were so many all around us before the tour! Beautiful views and photo ops! Do the full day tour if time allows! The morning and afternoon tours are very different!
We had an amazing day with Jerome. Learned about some history of New Zealand and the Māori culture. Saw so many great views of the city and surrounding natural sites. I would highly recommend.
Very knowledgeable guide. Comfortable vehicle. Stunning scenery. Lots of walking and climbing so not for the old or infirm.
Very nice review of the volcanos surrounding Auckland. Spectacular views. Out of the beaten path trails. Tip: join the full-day tour for a more complete experience; wear comfortable enclosed shoes.
Our driver and guide Jerome showed on time, drove us to several volcanic sites a lot of walking, the tour gave us an idea what the city looks like! Jerome gave us in details history of each site! Strongly recommend to first timers visit beautiful Auckland!!
The volcano tour was great! Mike was very knowledgeable about the formation and development of the many volcanoes surrounding and within the City of Auckland. He was also very knowledgeable about the Māori culture and the importance and use of the volcanoes in their everyday lives. Also how the volcanoes were utilized during the wars and the interesting lava formed tree molds created during the eruptions. Mike was a great communicator, eager to share his knowledge. We did the full day tour and highly recommend it.
We just finished 3 weeks in Australia and (mostly) New Zealand, and we went on a whole lot of tours. This was absolutely my favorite! Mike, the guide, started Voltours after going on numerous outings with friends. He demonstrated a depth of knowledge about the many volcanoes we visited or viewed from afar, as well as many of the other sights along the way. We learned a great deal in the several hours with him. I know a couple of reviews questioned whether the whole day was necessary or if a half day would have sufficed. We greatly enjoyed the full day. In fact we visited some of the same sites we had on a tour to Devonport, but only with Mike did we explore the tunnels under one of them and learn about the “disappearing cannons” built there in the 19th century. The only thing to note is that when the description says “we’ll walk a lot” they’re not kidding. It involves nontrivial slopes. Probably not an issue for most people, but a potential limitation (in our case he drove up to a couple of summits we might otherwise have walked to).

Wonderful day. Will tour with Mike again. Great knowledge regarding Auckland's volcanoes and surrounds.
Mike was an amazing guide .. very knowledgeable .. all stops were interesting .. great way to see areas around the city and views … would highly recommend
Book The half day with Voltours limited / Mike. The half day would have been better and sufficient. He was very nice but running out of stuff to say and do for a full day
We had a really great day with Mike. We learned so much about not just the volcanos of the Auckland area, but also about the areas history and culture. While there is a fair amount of walking, it is evenly spaced out with the trips between sites. Mike is considerate of your needs (coffee, snacks, restrooms) and accommodating. The car was very comfortable for 5 guests (the maximum) and the conversation flowed throughout the entire day. This was a fantastic way to learn about the formation of Auckland and also get a feel for the city and its surroundings. I highly recommend this tour.
Mike was very knowledgeable and fun. Once you see one volcano you will be able to see others. It was fun seeing them in different locations around Auckland. There are different types of volcanos and these are different from those in Oregon, USA. I am not a hiker but enjoyed the scenery and people watching while some hiked the craters.
Had a good time and learned a bunch of fun facts. Got to see a number of the volcanic features, which was not just limited to the big domes that you would be able to pick out yourself by guessing or Wikipedia
Learning about the geological history of Auckland was amazing. I had no idea how unique and influential the geology is in this region. Mike was an amazing guide. Super informative and easy to talk to. Full of knowledge and answered all our questions. He offers a half day tour, but I would suggest doing the full day tour. The second half of the day was so great and you must not miss it.
This full day tour is good for those who like volcanos, but also those who like scenery. You can include varying amounts of walking. I had injured my knee a few days before this tour and Mike was able to make several accomdations for me. You will see many Volcanos and Mike will explain the volcanos and their significance to the area. The scenery from the volcano's rims was magnificent. Mike is very personable, knowledgeable, and well traveled himself. Truly an enjoyable day.
Lots of information and a very knowledgeable person on geology. Highly recommended tour and worth the full day.
Mike was a great guide who shared the history of the volcanoes and Aukland. It was a great way to see so much more of what Aukland really is. It was lots of walking but definitely worth all the steps to the summit of the volcanoes to see the sights of Aukland.
The full-day Grand Auckland Volcanoes tour did not disappoint. Mike of Voltours picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. He was very organized and knowledgeable. We visited all the places mentioned in the tour description. Sure there's lots of walking especially up and around the craters at Mangere Mountain and to the top of Mount Eden. But the views made it worthwhile. In the afternoon we were driven to the top of Mt Victoria because someone in the group couldn't do the climb. So grateful! Besides volcanoes, we saw lots of sheep at the base of One Tree Hill, black swans near a pump station, lava rocks along the coast and a military fortress. We had an hour to get lunch in town and later stopped for ice cream near a beach. Mike often offered to take photos of us with our cameras. A nice touch.
We did the full day tour but found the half day would have met our needs. We were disappointed that our guide had no geology or volcanology related experience or degree, although TripAdvisor/Viator stated "expert guide". He said he "read a book". We should have asked more details before we booked, our mistake. We found ourselves wanting something meatier. The views are stunning and we enjoyed all the historical commentary about the Maori.
Mike was an amazing tour guide who kept you interested in the history of NZ. The views of our tour were magnificent. Expect some hiking but it was all fun and good.
Mike was an awesome tour guide. He took time to explain everything to us, even making a little game out of it (giving us an opportunity to guess the answers). All of the stops were perfect, with amazing views. Keep in mind that this tour does require quite a bit of uphill walking and you will get a good workout! Also, I liked the fact that I was supporting a small business.
I spent one whole month in New Zealand and did everyday a tour. This one was the only disappointment I had. I usually don't give negative reviews but here I feel I have to. My first point is that I had to sit in the stinky back of the train. I know not everyone can sit in the front but using a vehicle where one of your clients has no view and not really fresh air crosses the line. There were many little examples like that. When it came to taking pictures of us, I was already the last one from the group and waiting in the burning sun. The guide Mike still felt it is necessary to take first pictures of foreigners than of his paying clients. So good so far. These are little things. A little awkward was also that he told me that it's interesting that in Germany they let me have my job (I'm very high qualified and have a very high position). I found it intersection that he finds that interesting (maybe because I am young and a woman?, anyways weird comment. What he will tell you about Maori culture and history is different than what Maori people will tell you. There is no judgment , just mentioning. The tour didn't end where it was supposed to be according to the description of the tour, but at the end he said: you can take the ferry to get back (I had to pay 8 dollars). Also unlike he said the ferry doesn't come every 10 minutes but every 30 minutes. In my case it had even a delay and I was waiting for an hour. Not cool. There were also other things that othered me, but I spent enough time for this review.
Mike is an excellent guide. He knows a lot about the geology of the volcanoes and the history of the Māori settling in the area. We had excellent views of the city and harbor. Be aware there is hiking up and down some of the volcanoes and wear appropriate shoes.
We saw Auckland from the various volcanoes surrounding it. Lovely views, great information. Even in the rain, the tour was lovely
This is a tour with a difference! No driving up and down high streets looking at shopfronts and buildings. This was 'Raw' Auckland. Our Tour Guide, Mike, picked us up at our hotel, there was just me and my lovely wife so we had 'Mike' all to ourselves. The day was very windy, at time cold, and some rain, so not the most comfortable but we managed. The tour IS a lot of walking, much uphill, as to be expected! (But of course downhill too!) Mike proved to be a very knowledgeable, not just on volcanoes, but upon the associated indigenous history of each place we visited, whether volcano or township we drove through. It was a long tiring day but we ended with side of Auckland we hard;y knew existed. Well worth the effort. Thanks Mike!
Mike was knowledgeable and very personable. It was like having a friend take you on a tour. This is a must do!!
Mike was an excellent guide who is very knowledgeable, entertaining and considerate. We booked the full-day tour and had a wonderful time. I enjoyed Auckland volcanic landscape and learnt a lot of Maori history from Mike.
After booking this tour, I was really unsure what to expect. Well this was way above our expectations. Mike was an awesome tour guide, explaining so much an asking questions (to make sure we were listening) and the tour was awesome. The kids are still talking about it, a mth later, telling everyone they see about the volcanoes and Mike. I will definitely be promoting this excursion to friends and friends who are travel agents. Thanks for a great day.
Mike was a great guide - very knowledgable, engaging and entertaining. He went out of his way to make sure the tour fitted well with everyone on it. The information on the volcano history and possible future activity was fascinating. A grand day out.
Mike was a really friendly, and knowledgeable guide. I was the only one who booked the tour that day so I got to chat a ton with him. Lots of really cool hikes combined into a fantastic day. Mike explained so much about each location we were at including how it was formed, Maori history there, and more recent history. After lunch, he drives you to the north shore to walk more and to see some old military bunkers. The whole thing was organized extremely well and efficiently!
We had the privilege of having Mike as our tour guide on this Full day trip. Mike was very friendly and knowledgeable and answered all questions that we had regarding the volcanoes and the surrounding areas. I would highly recommend that if you are looking for a great guide i would suggest you book this tour with this company. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. kinkos101@yahoo.com

This was fantastic. All the views are a must see. Would highly recommend this tour. Learned a lot and the driver was extremely friendly and informative.

This is a great experience because of Mike who created this unique tour. He's extremely knowledgeable about the geological history of Auckland and providing some fascinating insights and visiting numerous exciting viewpoints. The afternoon portion of the tour was equally interesting with a walk through the gun emplacements at North Head and walk along the wall separating a lake from the ocean and showing how the lake water is filtered through the lava field to reach the ocean. There is a fair amount of walking involved. On the negative side, seating in the 11 person van was tight.with the van full.

This was a very well thought out tour, that focused on volcanoes in a locale where much of the city was built on volcanoes. (As a result, the tour took you to much of the city). Highly recommended, with a lot of different stuff (like a beach walk) on the afternoon tour. Do both.

Fantastic tour.
If you haven't seen Auckland from the volcanoes' height, you haven't seen Auckland.
The views are great and the guide very informative, it helps you get the topography better and appreciate the city like no other way.
Highly recommended, either half day just mainland volcanoes, or the full day.

Our guide was very friendly, knowledgeable . We learned about a lot of volcanoes in Oakland. The scenery on the mountain is also great.

If you’re the kind of person who likes to get a real sense of the physical features of a region you are visiting, this is a great tour for you. We took the full-day tour and got to see Auckland from many vantage points. Our friendly guide Mike was very knowledgeable and explained the geological processes around us and how the volcanos were part of Maori life. Without knowing about this, you might not think much about these hills and buttes you see around Auckland. Also, it was fascinating that there happens to be a large cluster of these volcanos just right in the Auckland area but none north of it or south of it ! ! There is obviously some walking up hills (they are volcanos!), but easy to do if you are in reasonable health. We’d definitely recommend. It was very interesting to us

The highlight of our tour was Mike. He's extremely knowledgeable, affable, and attentive. We didn't have the best of weather but we got to see so many craters and wonderful views of the entire city. The afternoon walk along the lava flows by the beach was extremely memorable. We are sure we would never have been to see everything we did and learned so much about the history of volcanoes without Mike. Definitely bring your walking shoes and camera because you'll spend the whole day not wanting to miss seeing a single thing. We highly recommend to everyone who's already been or never been to Auckland to do this tour because it will help you see the city and appreciate its unique history/geography in a completely different way!

This was a fabulous tour. We visited a variety of volcanoes that you might not know were volcanoes is someone didn't tell you. Mike was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. He added a lot of information that you couldn't get if you just visited the site yourself. It was great to be outside and hiking around the craters- and you even had the chance to climb down into one of the craters if you wanted to. The afternoon lava field was absolutely fascinating- something I didn't know Auckland had. Definitely a well planned, organized, and interesting tour.

Our all day volcano tour was fantastic. The tour involved a lot of walking/borderline hiking in some areas, up to the tops of domes and down into the craters and along seashore rocks. You should be in decent shape and definitely wear good walking shoes. There were some areas of unsure footing so good balance is helpful. The nice thing though, was that the guide, Mike, kept us very informed about the conditions and effort needed in each case and it was always optional. If you weren't comfortable hiking down a steep path, you could see and appreciate the area just as well from another spot. You travel all around Auckland, covering a surprising amount of ground, to see the various domes remaining. Mike had good knowledge of the area and the history of the domes and other geological artifacts visible around the city. The tour never seemed rushed, it felt like we could spend as much or as little time at each location as we wanted, he would snap photos for us and was happy to discuss all sorts of topics in addition to the volcanoes. We were probably lucky to have a small group for the morning and afternoon sessions, so it made it easier to discuss and get around. We had a short tea break in the morning session, at a local shop and he did have water bottles available, a definite bonus. There is a break for lunch, on your own, and then you meet up again for the afternoon session. The afternoon was slightly different, not strictly volcanoes, with an optional walk along a beach and some time spent at old barracks built on top of one of the domes. Wonderful view and great exercise. This tour is for anyone wanting to get outside and see the city from a different perspective, geology that you wouldn't otherwise think about, and some Maori history too. After being on a cruise ship for over a week, we loved being outside, walking a lot and getting great views of the city and area from every direction. A very good deal!!

Such an awesome tour. There is the just morning and just afternoon option but we decided to do the full day one. And it was worth it. Very informative and interesting. It was a great perspective of the city as well and we were able to see so much of it. Mike was very knowledgeable and told us very interesting things about the area and the volcanoes history. We never would have had this experience on our own. In the afternoon we got to see and walk along old lava flows that are now partially covered by the sea, but during low tide you can see and walk all over it. Breathtaking! Also where we went there were never a lot of people to get in our way of the views and scenery. Definitely a tour worth doing.

Mike is fantastic as a volcano guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the day with him. Loved the small group experience and the depth of knowledge Mike has. It helps that he is a really great person as well. We recommend this tour!

The guide was friendly and professional and had a great experience. We turned five volcanoes and looked at the 19th-century military installations, and went under the fort to see the internal structure, which was nice. Some of the attractions aren't very well known. I don't really know without a guide.
