Departing from the famous landmark of the Auckland Sky Tower, our west coast adventure begins with a guided tour out of the city centre over the famous Harbour Bridge to Auckland’s North Shore. We then head west towards the affluent areas of Coatesville, Kumeu & Riverhead. While on this journey our guides will point out all the main attractions and tell stories about the area along the way.
Arriving at the craft beer brewery Hallertau, you will be treated to a delicious lunch of your choice from a special set menu. Following lunch we have the opportunity to taste some of Hallertau’s winning craft beers before continuing our day.
A short drive from the brewery we arrive at the wild west coast black sand beach of Muriwai. Exploring this area, you will be amazed by the rugged coastline, unique black sand and the feel of raw natural power that surrounds the area.
Walking up the hill from the beach not only will you be treated to amazing views but also have the chance to see the largest mainland gannet colony in the North Island. Getting this close to these impressive ocean mastering birds is a special experience. (Bird numbers vary at different times of the year).
Crossing the harbour again, we head to the charming seaside suburb of Devonport. Here, we take a scenic drive to the top of North Head, a historic volcanic cone with sweeping views of the Hauraki Gulf and city skyline. Learn about its fascinating military tunnels and coastal defence history as you explore this unique vantage point. Its tunnels, bunkers, and gun placements tell the story of coastal defence from the late 1800s through both World Wars. The short walk to the summit (approx. 10 mins) is rewarded with some of the best harbour views in Auckland.
After a great afternoon exploring Auckland’s West Coast and North Shore, it’s time to return to the city. You can choose to take the scenic ferry ride back across the harbour from Devonport to the city, or enjoy a fully guided drive with drop-offs at central locations and hotels.
Simon was our guide. He was a wonderful tour guide. We stopped for lunch at a brewery and it was delicious. Simon did not rush us and told us to take our time. We went to the black sand beach and he took us to some beautiful views. Would definitely use this tour company again
Piha Beach is a stunning spot: the damp black sand reflects light perfectly, blurring the line between earth and sky. A visit to the nearby bird colony is also a must. And at the local brewery, take care—the portions are absolutely gigantic.
I can only say that it was a great afternoon. Our guide Liam had a lot to tell us and could answer all the questions, including cheeky answer 😄. It was nice that it was a small group.
This is a good tour but would be better if instead of including lunch (1 main per person up to NZD30), it might be better to reduce the price of the tour and let customers pay for what they want to eat themselves as there would be differences in how much each person can eat. The places we stopped at to walk around or take pictures were really nice and the pacing of the tour was great.
This execution was well worth the money to get a little way out of the city and see the incredible natural beauty of New Zealand. The tour guide, Grant, was knowledgeable and friendly.
I had a wonderful experience on the West Coast beaches and Devonport day tour. Our guide was extremely friendly, enthusiastic, and professional. He gave us lots of interesting information throughout the trip and explained everything very clearly. As a foreign visitor, I especially appreciated how clear his pronunciation was, which made it much easier for me to understand and follow his explanations. I really enjoyed the whole tour and would highly recommend both the guide and this experience!

Fantastic tour with an amazing guide! I highly recommend this Auckland Wild West Coast tour! Even though it was a very small group, our guide, Trent, was incredibly kind, attentive, and welcoming throughout the entire trip. He was also a very safe and smooth driver, which made the journey super comfortable. The scenery was breathtaking, and Trent made the whole experience even better.

What a great tour! The wild west side of Auckland was amazing to see. The cliffs, gannet birds, and powerful waves were a sight to see. Lunch was very nice and gave us a chance to meet the others on the tour with us. Simon, our guide, however really made the day memorable. He was informative and patient enough to answer all our questions about the tour and Auckland. Highly recommend this tour.

The tour guide was good, but the bus ride was not. I would have given more stars, but the bus ride was so hot it was miserable. The lunch was fantastic. Would have preferred to have skipped the golf course and spent more time viewing the Gannets.
My wife and I went on this tour as the second day of our honeymoon in New Zealand and couldn’t have been happier with the experience! The tour was kicked off with a delicious lunch at Hallertau Brewery. It was a beautiful day and we were thrilled to see that some of the gannets were still at the Muriwai Colony. Matt was a fantastic tour guide, offering many interesting insights, and with a comedic touch at times! We can’t recommend this tour enough.
Great day trip out of Aukland. Small group <15 in a van, good lunch at Hallertau brewpub. Excellent guide and driver Grant made the trip fantastic with info about the area. Beautiful black sand Muriwai beach, nesting Gannetts, stops at Devonport and North Head.

The beach was fantastic, sand unbelievable with spectacular waves . The weather made it even better. Took the paths to see up close of the birds and greenery, definitely an amazing place.
This was a splendid afternoon tour to some exquisite beaches and coastline. The gannet colony is brilliant. Lunch at the German brewery was good. Simon’s commentary was informative and enthusiastic, but not overdone as some Guides can be. Highly recommended.

Tour driver Matt was a very nice person, but the tour was quite boring. We were expecting more interaction and details provided about the places we drove through and visited. The brewery lunch was also mediocre. The beer, which was not included in the price, was good though.

Fantastic day out! The Hallertau Brewery lunch was delicious, and the tour itself was the perfect way to see the West Coast. Muriwai’s black sand beach and the gannets were the clear highlights for me. Everything was well-organized and our guide was very knowledgeable. 10/10!
Ben, our driver/tour guide was great. THe Mercedes van he picked us up with was roomy and very comfortable. Ben had lots of great stories and information about NZ and clearly loves his job. The brewery lunch was fun and the drive there was very pretty. The Gannet Colony was amazing and the area is beautiful. DEvonport and North Head were great and also provided a lot of history of the area and amazing views back to Auckland. Highly recommend

This was a half day tour, Matt was our driver and tour guide. It was great to see the beaches on both sides of Auckland. The views back to the city from Devonport were quite spectacular. In contrast the great open spaces at the black sands beaches, with the power of the waves breaking on the shore.
Enjoyed this overview of the area from the west coast to the north Auckland suburbs. The west coast of course and gannet colony is a must see but I also enjoyed our drive around the different neighborhoods and countryside while our excellent guide , Simon told us different things about the country and how people are living - both historical and contemporary.
Our guide, Simon, was great. Friendly and informative, the tour was a nice way to see the sights outside of the city. Lunch with fellow travelers was a nice touch and a cool opportunity for a bit of connection. Great tour! We got a bit of rain, but it didn’t stop us. Got some awesome photos as well.

Very intresting day. Super knowledgeable guide, Dave who had great help from another guide Sam . We had a very nice lunch at Hallertau Brewery and a great tour with many informations and good advice from Dave regarding our continious journey in NZ. We wouldn't hesitate to use Cheeky Travels again!
The guide made the tour better with his commentary and insights. It was a rainy and windy day, but the gannet colony and scenery were beautiful. Lunch was average.
I can't image a better tour to get a flavor of the Auckland area. We had lots of rain and they did a great job and we hardly noticed the rain
This was an enjoyable, relaxing day. Ben was our driver/guide who was engaged, positive and informative from start to finish. Unrushed. Great Brewery stop prepared for our lunch with a better than expected food and beverage choice efficiently presented and served. Very nice atmosphere which I would return to on our own. The views were fantastic throughout and does require a reasonable degree of fitness with steep inclines at times. The van was suitable for comfort and the group was varied and interesting in there own right.

Had an amazing day trip to Muriwai Beach with our guide Jeoff. It was very well organised, and we learned a lot about New Zealand. The gannet colony was absolutely stunning to see up close, the whole area was beautiful. Lunch was great, and the view from North Head was incredible. A perfect adventure!

Aled and Hanos were great company and despite the relentless rain, I had a good time. They took me to Hallertau Brewery, where the food and beer were excellent. Next they took me to Muriwai Beach, which was as wild as you could get with the rain and wind. We even saw the Gannet Colony. Next we drove to Devonport & North Head, where I saw views of the Hauraki Gulf and city skyline, and the military fortifications. Overall it was excellent. Perhaps the order of the itinerary could be reversed, ending with dinner at the brewary.
