Spent a few days at VR Auckland City hotel and it was a good experience. We had a two-bedroom appartment and it was very spacious and had almost everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. There was also a problem with our reservation, but the staff helped us to resolve it. The hotel's location is excellent, just next to CBD. So, it was just a walking distance to a number of places we wanted to visit, including the Auckland Sky Tower, which was less than 10-minute walk from the hotel. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Auckland.

Overall A hotel room is usually just a place to sleep for us, as we spend most of our holidays out exploring. Unfortunately, this room didn't live up to the expectations set by the photos on the website, which we felt were misleading. While the issues didn't ruin our holiday, there were enough problems that I think other travellers should be aware of. The location was definitely the highlight of our stay. It was convenient and made it easy to get around and enjoy everything we wanted to do. Cleanliness was the biggest disappointment. We arrived to find a large stain on the end of the bed. There was also pink mould in the shower, mould on the net curtains, loose debris on the bathroom floor, and food splashes down the side of the fridge. A rough patch job was also obvious on the bathroom wall. Overall, it didn't feel like the room had been cleaned to an acceptable standard. There were several maintenance issues throughout our four-night stay. The bathroom light wouldn't turn off, which meant the extractor fan ran continously. The shower door didn't close properly and flooded the bathroom every time it was used, requiring us to use our bath towels to soak up the water. There was also a plastic glove covering the smoke detector, which was concerning, and the TV had been left with the wrong remote. When we reported the stained bedding, we expected housekeeping to replace it while we were out. Instead, we were handed clean bedding to change it ourselves, which was disappointing. Reception did eventually resolve the TV remote issue once we reported it. After using our towels to mop up the flooded bathroom, we requested replacements before heading out for the day. We were assured they would be replaced, but when we returned that evening there were no towels in the room. We had to contact reception again, and replacement towels arrived around 30 minutes later. The excellent location added value, but the number of cleanliness, maintenance and service issues meant the room didn't offer good value for the price we paid. Would I Stay Again? Probably not. The location was fantastic, but the cleanliness, room condition and overall maintenance let the property down. My advice would be to read recent reviews carefully and not rely solely on the photos shown on the website, as our experience was very different from what was advertised.
BEWARE! I remember staying in a really awful hostel in northern Thailand about 30 years ago. This replace reminds me of that. It was absolutely FILTHY. Serious mould in the shower area, probably because there is no exhaust fan. Apparently I was in a “deluxe” room which is a joke. Requested an upgrade to “executive” - cracks in basin, mould in shower area, dust everywhere, dirty kettle, upholstery has not been cleaned for what looks like EVER, hallway carpet smells BAD, graffiti on the mirror, vape left behind (actually propped up on top of the door frame 🧐) and no mattress protector on bed with sheets that didn’t fully cover bed. I was booked in for 3 nights for a work trip. Spent the evening planning my escape and have now booked into a beautiful Airbnb and will check out 2 days early. On a side note I also felt concerned for my safety. On requesting an “upgrade” to an “executive” room I was given a key to a room and told to see if it was acceptable. When I opened the door it was clear the room was already occupied - bed unmade, shoes in the bathroom. When I asked reception why she would give me a key to a room she knows is occupied she said she didn’t know they were there. HOW is this possible??????. In addition the room I eventually ended up in had a “do not disturb” sign on the door. Receptionist knocked 3 times and declared herself as staff before entering - why? Again, surely you know whether the room is occupied and if that’s not clear, what are the security protocols re room keys. I felt so unsafe I found another accommodation at 3am this morning and checked out at 7am. Another note to management. Just because you took photos of this place 20+ years ago when it opened doesn’t mean you can’t not spend any money on maintaining it. There is NO excuse for the place to be this DIRTY. You also need to do a full renovation on this property or start marketing it as a budget hostel type accommodation. It is the most terrible place I have ever stayed in. Also, I have looked at other reviews - there are MULTIPLE bad reviews so why do you have an auto response thanking them and welcoming them back. This is insane.BEWARE !!!!
Dirty, dirty, dirty. First problem was air con stuck on 25degrees. Rang reception twice and they said they would send someone. They sent housekeeping and they said they would contact reception. We went to reception later and they said they could change rooms the next day. I told them sorry but the room is so dirty, we had already booked somewhere for the next night. The only thing that was clean was the bedding. Floor so dirty that we kept our shoes on. Do not know what the stains were on the lamp. Dishwasher broken. Kitchen was so dirty. Food in oven. Shower was yuck. All the grouting was sposed to be white but was brown. We understand s motel can be run down but this was next level. To top it off, went to drop key in straight away in the morning and sign at reception saying back in 10. Our motel we booked for the next night was so clean and luxurious compared to this dump.
The place I booked was the same layout of the pictures I saw on booking.com however the place looked like it was 20 years run down. From stains on the wall and big brown almost red stains on the floor as you walked in and also and around the shower to a bed that slid everywhere because it was 2 singles put together so there would be a large Crack in the bed every morning which wasnt comfortable. I got there and the "tiled" bathroom floor was just painted cement with chips missing and there was no remote for the TV. Both bedside tables looked like they were from a dump and had big crackes in the top of them. There were also big yellow/brown stains on the mattress and stains on the supposed clean sheets. It was good how there was a washing and drying machine however both were very very dirty. I feel that the "Standard queen room" that I booked was false advertised fue to the lack of relation to any of the pictures online and it didnt seem like it was cleaned before we got there. The sink was also missing the plug/grate to stop other things from going down it and the toilet also hardly flushed. The wall plug sockets in the kitchen were also so loose that you literally were able to pull it out the wall. The location was great and in the middle of the CBD and the staff were nice too however I wouldn't reccomend this place due to the unclean and run down status of the room. Overall not very happy with the room and what I paid at all.
