Itinerary
Leonidas was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, and the 17th of the Agiad line, a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythological demigod Heracles and Cadmus. Leonidas was son of King Anaxandridas II. He succeeded his half-brother King Cleomenes I to the throne in 489 BC. Leonidas had a notable participation in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he died at the battle and entered myth as the leader of the 300 Spartans. While the Greeks lost this battle, they were able to expel the Persian invaders in the following year.
Next to the monument of Leonidas, in the historic Thermopylae, lies the innovative museum of the Lamia Municipality, dedicated to the 480 BC battle that changed the course of Greek history. A scientific project of the Foundation of the Hellenic World, the Centre of Historical Information of Thermopylae opened its doors to the public in 2010. The building, in the shape of an ancient spearhead turned to the north as if facing the invaders, is characterized by its ergonomic design that applies to the most up-to-date museological purposes and features glass panels that allow in plenty of natural light. The Centre represents history as an interactive narrative and discourse: In its three exhibition halls -named Leonidas, Dienekes and Thermopylae- multimedia applications offer visitors a virtual trip to the time and battlefields of the Persian Wars, as recounted by the ancient historian Herodotus, while the very battle of Thermopylae comes alive in a digital 3D movie.
The Battle of Thermopylae war conducted in 480BC among the Greeks and the Persians the same time the Naval Battle of Artemision took place. In the beginning of September the Persian Army led my Xerxis reaches the passageways of Thermopylae. The Greeks have chosen this strategic spot to face the Persian attack. Xerxis has commanded Leonides, the leader of the Greek Army to surrender his armory but he replied 'Come and Get them'. Two consecutive days the Greeks fought heroically. The third day Efialtes betrays the Greeks, showing the Persians the passageway so as to get to the back side of the Greeks. So, the Persian Army surrounds the Greeks. Leonides remains in the site of the battle along with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespieis and 400 Thivaious, loyal to his homeland laws. He fall dead from Persian arrows.
Kamena Vourla is a seaside town near Athens. Its lush green landscape and beautiful beaches will enchant you. You will also find several restaurants and cafes there.
The Baths of Thermopylae are located 15 km. from the city of Lamia. The area is known from the Battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and the Persians in 480 BC. Next to the road is the statue of Leonidas and the sacred hill, where Leonidas fell fighting with the 300 Spartans and the 700 Thespians. According to mythology, Hephaestus, at the request of the goddess Athena, created the springs so that Hercules could wash and regain his strength after his labors.

A lot of history from guide Xenofodas. we learnt everything about the battles between greeks and persians
Nikos was very knowledgeable about the Spartan and Persian battle at Thermopylae. He explained how the topography has changed since that battle took place. We walked on the same path as the battle was fought, and saw a plaque memorializing the men who died and were buried there. We visited the two memorials and the small museum that explained the war and its significance for the Greek people. The only downside is that Thermopylae is a distance from Athens, so you have to be OK with a longer ride. Nikos was great at sharing Greek history during the ride, which made it pleasant.
Booked a private tour but driver arrived with others in the vehicle and he said they had one more group to pickup. He was surprised when I told him we had booked a private tour. He called the office and claimed they had a broken down vehicle and that's why others were coming along. No communication in advance nor offer to discount or an alternative arrangement. We ended up refusing to go on the tour since it wasn't as promised. Please be aware you may not get what you booked.
Our driver Nikos was a very personable and a likeable person, would highly recommend him. On a scale of 10 l would give him 20. As for the tour a total disappointment, very much a waste of time. 2 and a half hour drive to get to a museum with no exhibits and just a 10 minute 3d movie, staff were very nice and helpful 👍. No wifi in vehicle.
Efficient, quick and friendly service. Would highly recommend!!
Great experience with our guide, Nikos. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The Thermopylae site is undergoing improvements but completely accessible and apparently easier to navigate than in the past. Nikos pointed out all the key sites and was very flexible on what we wanted to explore. Great day
Our guide was very knowledgeable. He made the trip enjoyable, taking us into the field. If you're into battle history and experiencing the lay of the land that impacted this battle you'll enjoy. Beautiful ride through the country side and lunch in a café on the water.
The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. My guide made it even better with how knowledgeable he was about Thermopylae and Greek history overall, while also being super friendly and accommodating. I’d absolutely do the trip again with him and the company, and I’d easily recommend it to others.
A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.
Highly recommend this adventure. The best part if a wonderful say was getting to know Nikos. Life in Greece came alive during our conversations on the ride. We never felt rushed and were able to really enjoy the day learning about the rich history of Greece.
We have absolutely amazing day. Yiannis tell us everything what we wanna know. We laughed together, listened good music during the trip and had amazing coffee. Totally worth it. 13/10
I had a fantastic experience on my tour to Thermopylae. Our driver/guide was very friendly, flexible, and knowledgeable, which made the trip both enjoyable and informative. He was also very punctual and professional, which made the entire day run smoothly. What I appreciated most was how attentive he was to our needs throughout the journey. He regularly checked in to see if we wanted to make extra stops, whether for photos, a quick break, or simply to take in the scenery. That level of flexibility made the tour feel relaxed and personalized rather than rushed. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone interested in visiting Thermopylae in a comfortable and well-organized way.
Our guide John did an exceptional job. It was a long trip and he made it worth it. Stopped on the way back for a great lunch. He was very informative and helpful.
It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
5 out of 5. Most blessed are those that get ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ as a driver. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Made several stops to see the real Athens and the battleground. Recommend.
The previous month, I and my friends visited Thermopylae. Our driver, Nikos, was very kind and helpful. He said us for the battle which took place in 480 BC. We learnt many historical events and how the Greeks managed to front the Persians.
Our driver was Nikos, and we were impressed - polite, good driver, and quite sociable. On the drive up we talked about Thermopylae, mythology and current events. We had asked for a small change to the itinerary to go to the Church of Transfiguration and this was accommodated. At Thermopylae we saw the statue of Leonidis, and spent a fair amount of time in the information centre. At the end of the trip we were very satisfied But After we got back to the hotel in Athens we learned there was more to see, and became disappointed that three locations weren’t included 1 Monument to the 700 Thespians. The monument is 50 metres from the statue and easy to get to 2 The plaque for the 300 Spartans. This is across the street and a 1 minute walk away. In fact we asked about the death spot of the Spartans and were told there was no marker 3 The Phocian wall where the last battle took place is a 5 minute walk from the plaque for the Spartans. Future travellers should be aware there is more to see, and make sure you see everything especially for those who are passionate about this battle.
Amazing time with Nikos!!!! We really enjoy the trip to Thermopilae from Athens. Niko was a great guide, loves the history and enjoy with us the visit. In all the moments he was expected about our comfortability, really a good driver and better company. Thank you so much for everything Nikos!!!
I wish I could put more than five stars! Nikos (and his associate Nikos) were OUTSTANDING guides!!! I learned so much, and they took us everywhere I wanted to go! Nikos was very personable and we enjoyed our conversations. I can’t say enough good about this tour!!!
Our driver was very courteous and thoughtful. He went above and beyond what we expected. He became a tour guide, not just a driver. He wanted to make sure we had a memorable experience. Thank you, Kris.
Interesting facts about the Spartans. Thought we would see the actual battlefield. Learned a lot. Our tour guide Nikos was GREAT! During the 2 hour drive (one way) he told us alot about the history of Greece. So interesting!
Wonderful tour with Yiannis. He was very helpful and attentive with my group of friends. I had a hurt foot and he flexed the ride so I could enjoy it. It's worth it! This day will be kept in our hearts, thank you very much!
